I've been trying to find a good introductory text on Gnosticism. I've done some research on my own, but the reviews I find usually claim the book is too biased, whether it's too sympathetic or focuses too much on it being heresiological.
Also, I'm not looking for a text of the history of Gnosticism, but that doesn't mean I'm against it being included in the book. I want to focus on understanding its theology before I concentrate on understanding it in a historical context.
Ellen Pagels writes a lot of great texts about traditional stories or historical personalities examined from a Gnostic perspective. Her most famous is Adam, Eva and the Serpent, but I really enjoy her book about the Gospel of Thomas. She is knowledgeable and an excellent writer. The books are a smooth read and full of information.
