Long term value probably sits with magic cards. I never hear of anyone selling or looking for NBA trading cards. Didn't even know they were still a thing.

The era of people not recognizing the future value of collectibles is over, which means there aren't nearly as many cards simply thrown away, which ultimately translates to lower future value, as there are many more of them on the market.
For instance, everyone that collects NBA cards these days is going to have the 'big stars', and in the NBA, unlike many other sports, people are stars their rookie years (as opposed to say, Ken Griffey Jr). So when everyone has a famous player's card, it won't be worth much later.
Magic rares aren't a reliable 'investment' either. The entire value of older cards is based on a controversial policy of Wizard's, which is not a stable investment long-term.

Keep some of the best pieces, sell off the rest you don't want/need. Go through your Magic collection and cull some of the worst cards out from it. I normally cull about once every three to four years as I normally buy few boxes.
I look at things very quickly and have two piles and make a snap decision. One is keep pile, other is sell pile.
Then I take the sell pile, split them between trade, sell, and store credit piles. The highest being sold for cash money value, the median and lowest in a trade binder. After the trade binder doesn't work, they become credit fodder or sold at median prices if possible. Sometimes I'll talk to some people, and if they need something I'll hand them a card or 10 to improve a deck.
However, I always tend to keep "useful things" like Capsize. Depending on the formats you play, but if you play EDH keeping multiples of certain cards is very useful. I keep different formats in binders so if I deconstruct/build a new deck I don't have to go through scrambling through boxes.

also, any sports cards that are worth anything are SUPER old. None of the cards coming out now will be worth anything if you are going for money.
If you like collecting Lebron James cards then just buy them for $.25 each at some sports card store.
