I need to save up some extra money. I have to pay a fee for something, and I'm not sure how much it's going to be, but probably around $200, and I'd also probably have to pay for my friend until she can pay me back, so I'd need around $400.
I do have a job that I get about $130 a week from. However, as I'm 17, my mom holds my debit card and she usually just puts my checks into the bank when she cashs hers. If I simply go to the bank and cash my checks, she's going to want to know why I need all the money and what not.
I'm going to call up a local bookstore that buys books and talk about selling a bunch of books I have to them, as well as some local comic shops to see if they buy Magic/Pokemon cards. Do any of you know how common it is for standard comic shops to buy Magic commons/uncommons in bulk?
Besides that, I really don't know how else I can make some money in addition to my job. Getting another job is probably out of the question because I'd only need a temporary one, and I wouldn't want to apply, work, and then just quit. I just need simple ways to earn a quick buck, LEGALLY, without my parents knowing as well...

Yea most card shops that I know of don't usually buy bulk now ebay stores on the other hand probly would. If you have a paypal/ebay account just throw some things up for sale. Or try to drop somethings in the marketplace here on these or other forums.
And the legally and without parents knowing puts a big hamper on some good ideas, lol.

i assume you're still in highschool, which is good. although this plan is slightly illegal.
step 1- acquire a pack of smokes, doesn't matter what kind.
step 2- sell smokes to the underage smokers for a dollar a smoke(or 75 cents if you need to). with approximately 30 smokes in a pack you make 30 dollars per pack. considering the pack was probably about 5-10 dollars you make an easy profit.
the larger the school, the more money to be made. i know, lets not encourage young people to smoke, but business is business and you need the money.

Well. You could always come clean with your parents and just say what you need it for. A fee? Interesting though, but I'd advise to come clean with your folks. They might just say no, but if you just put it carefully and have good arguments as to why you need that money, most parents will say yes.
I know they'd give me the money if I absolutely needed it, but, they'd also probably end up punishing me, getting really angry, etc. and I don't want to deal with that. I know it's againts forum rules to talk about illegal things, so I'm going to hold off on saying exactly what the fee is for until a mod says that its okay.
Also, why pay for your friend as well, since she can like, get a job as well.
She's been trying to get a job and hasn't heard back from any stores. She's an ex-girlfriend and I know she won't end up double-crossing me or anything.

If it's something illegal, you should really, REALLY, talk with your parents. Sure, they'd yell at you, but in the end they will respect you for coming clean. Most parents just want their kids to come to them with problems. If I had to choose, an angry parent right now, or an even angrier parent later on, I'd choose the former. But that's just the way I look at it. If anything, they're still your parents, and love you. They'll forgive you, even if the thing you did was something like drugs. Sure, you'll get a long talk, but in the end, you'll respect yourself more, and your parents will respect you more as well.
It's not drugs.
About the exgirlfriend thing, if she can't get a job, how can she pay you back in the first place? That's my opinion on it. I'd just tell her to do it on her own. Everyone has their own problems, you are not the one to be the one who has to pay for her problems as well.
When she does get a job, she'll pay me back. The history of me and her is far too complicated to try and explain. There's simply no way she could pay for it completely on her own right now, and her mother would be way worse than my parents.
See, I'm not afraid of getting a talking to or whatever. I'm afraid that they might take my car keys, prevent me from ever hanging out with her again, etc.

I don't see how knowing what it is helps him get money for it. The best it would do would be to guess his parents reaction and advise him to tell them or not based on what the fee is for.
As to getting the money: borrow? Ask your friends to pitch in $10-20 apiece? Thats a quick $100, and since you have a job, they can rely on you paying them back within the next week or two. You could probably get your parents to loan you $50 or so if you can lie well enough about what it is for.
What are the details of the account? Can you cash/withdraw the money without parental consent? If you can't get at the money without getting their permission, could you impress upon them the need for the money without revealing what it's going to be used for? If not, would lying to them about the why work?
There are few legal ways of getting money quick, particularly in these amounts at this age, and none are as good as the above if you can manage that. If you have almost a week to get the money and have good cards, eBay is often the best way to sell your cards outside a major gathering of players. Stores don't give you the full value of a card, and you can get more on eBay at times if you're lucky and set the opening bid right. I'd expect comics to work similarly, but I really don't know.
Borrowing from friends is also a great idea, as andelijah suggested, but the question of disclosure can come up again. However, even if you couldn't tell them either, there may be a better chance of getting access to money without revealing the why. Of course, they could be involved in paying fees, too, another pitfall in that idea.
On the family side: In my family situation, I would need to tell them what it is, period. I probably wouldn't because I'm horrible at confrontation, but from an objective standpoint it's often the wisest move for me to just come out and tell them. Naturally, I have no idea of your family situation, and if that doesn't work for you, it doesn't work and nobody saying it works for them can change it.
Oh, and if it's a legal fee/fine, I'd advise even more strongly against illegal things like the abhorrent cigarette-selling mentioned above.
Illegal.. if it's an underage drinking ticket I don't think your parents would be that upset. However it'd be slightly helpful if you were to say what it was anyway.
Well.. if you have some money cards you could try selling those.
Otherwise other legal ways.. well things I don't consider illegal.. if you could convince your parents to give you $1000 for stocks just invest it on some OTC stock that is in a pattern and make some profit then cash that out (minus taxes, it's really easy to make money off of OTC stocks, but it's also really easy to lose the money). Although parents may wonder what happened to the money. Another thing would be if you play online poker you can easily make 300$ in an hour.
Otherwise you could just come clean with your parents, you might be punished, but it won't be too bad
One important question is how much time do you have? Next I'd say if you have a lot of time go to a magic tournament and sell cards if you have good stuff. Otherwise, it may be advisable to mow lawns/ babysit kids in the neighborhood/ do odd jobs for relatives that are generous. Other decent ideas are convincing relatives to give you money by giving faulty reasoning.

I mow lawns in my neighborhood and make in excess of $100 a week, takes about 3-4 hours total, but then again I have access to a rider mower etc. It's been a fine option for me, and it's how I finance playing Magic etc. So try and get jobs from people, and realize that $50 is exactly 1/8th of the money that you owe, so every dollar counts.

LOLOLOLOL i used to do this in middle school only i sold them cigs from ash tray that were only like 1/4 smoked. thats really horriable now that i think about it. sure was funny back in the day.
he should go hang around gay bars/clubs till he gets hit on. give head for 50 a "pop". i got this idea from this movie where kevin smith lectures about making movies. he clames its a good way to get money.

please tell me this is not the same ex-gf who was stringing you along, f-ing with your head.
What are the details of the account? Can you cash/withdraw the money without parental consent?
I'm fairly certain I need the debit card to withdraw money. I can cash checks I have without parental consent. However, the way it's been working lately is that at the end of the week I give my check to my mom, tell her if I need any money taken out, and she does it all when she cashs her checks.
If you can't get at the money without getting their permission, could you impress upon them the need for the money without revealing what it's going to be used for?
Probably not.
If not, would lying to them about the why worK?
Probably, but I'd need a pretty big lie to why I need in the neighborhood of $400.
If you have almost a week to get the money and have good cards, eBay is often the best way to sell your cards outside a major gathering of players.
I have a few weeks, probably over a month. I've sold cards on Ebay before, with the help of my dad since I don't have my own account or anything.
Borrowing from friends is also a great idea, as andelijah suggested, but the question of disclosure can come up again.
My friends already all know what it's for, and two of them have already helped out greatly and I feel bad asking them for money.
Oh, and if it's a legal fee/fine, I'd advise even more strongly against illegal things like the abhorrent cigarette-selling mentioned above.
Precisely why I asked for legal options.

It's not underage drinking. I'm going to PM a mod and ask if it's okay to say it. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to, but I just want to be on the safe side.

I haven't played Magic for a really long time.

Yeah, as I mentioned, gonna try that.

I'd do this if I didn't have such a close family, but all the relatives that live nearby talk to my parents often and everything, and I don't want to raise any suspicion.

I think you posted hints about the reasons for the money to get attention. It would have been fairly easy to simply say "I needa raise $400 fast..." and the suggestions woulda been the same. Some of us are weary of every thread being a wide-open window into your personal issues.
That said, I can recommend a paper route or a temp agency as ways to get hired quickly for second jobs. That's how most Americans raise extra money, is a second job. I'd say if you had given it a little forethought, you could have used the end of college terms and high school to make extra money tutoring math or languages.
If you are already making OK cash and have decent credit, you might be able to get a small payday loan, but don't do this lightly as it will end up costing you about $500 when all is said and done.
* bloodydoves kills Bizket Overlord, just for the lulz.
Ok really, if you don't play, and won't miss your cards, then you can sell your stuff. Mowing lawns is GREAT money, esp if you trim/prune the yard. That gets extra $$$ from the old lady crowd. If your folks pay you for working in the house, then you can do tons of chores to make some extra allowance money or something like that.
this chick is using you. im not going to kill you, frankly i dont know why i care. being realistic, your some kid on a magic website. what ever happens in your life means very little in mine. that being said i some what like you. you seems to be intelligent by your arguments on the debate forums and i can respect some one that can think out of the box and is not a total social zombie. any how what im trying to say that perhaps you should man up and tell me/us what the money is for. also ditch that girl. she only is dragging you down. and i know you think she will not screw you over but well she all ready has in the past so it could happen again.

Frankly, it really shouldn't matter what he got in trouble with the law for, as he's asking for advice on how to raise money.
Since the discussion would still clearly be about the raising of the money, it technically wouldn't be a severe breach of the forum rules to mention what you got in trouble for. However, again, the relevancy issue comes up. Why risk it?
The fastest way to raise money is to sell some of your possessions, yard sale-style. You can also do contract work for people, which is basically temp work at its finest.
Or you could play dodgeball.
Whatever you choose, good luck.
Oh, and stay away from the girl. Unless you get some collateral for lending her cash, don't do it. She might just withhold it, claiming emotional distress from your past. It happened to me once (except I ingeniously left the PSP in question with another ex, leaving the two of them to fight over it MUAAHAHAHAHAHA).
any how what im trying to say that perhaps you should man up and tell me/us what the money is for.
It had nothing to do with me "manning up" or whatever, I just wanted to make sure it was okay with the forum rules prior to doing it.
And, I got the okay from a mod, so I'll post why. We went to Kohl's because she needed clothes, and being very low on money, shoplifted. On our way out the store, we got stopped and had to give our information, etc. No police were called but they told us that we'd both be receiving a letter from the Kohl's corporate department indicating how much money we owe. With further research, I've found out that this is formally called a "civil demand." The guy that was dealing with us said that he had no idea how much it would cost. From further research online, the most trustworthy amount I've gotten was "200-300 probably."
We're both pooling old/unneeded books together and I'm going to make a trip up to the local book center sometime next week to see what I can get for them. I've also contacted a local hobby store about their policy regarding buying used Magic cards.

There, now people can stop guessing and get back to the point of this thread: offering Bizket options for raising some quick cash legally (and I'll get to a couple of the .... less legal suggestions I've seen in a bit). The specifics of his fine, his supposed issues with this girl, all of it is superfluous to the topic. If you have any unrequested advice to the guy, send him a PM, this thread isn't for that. The guessing game is over, now move on, everyone.
I'm fairly certain I need the debit card to withdraw money. I can cash checks I have without parental consent. However, the way it's been working lately is that at the end of the week I give my check to my mom, tell her if I need any money taken out, and she does it all when she cashs her checks.
Most banks only require your presence with a valid photo ID to get cash from the counter, and sometimes just knowing your SSN will let them do it. It's worth a try. (If you don't have a legal-style photo ID and they ask for it, just pretend you can't seem to find it, must've left it at home, and make your getaway.)
Barring that, you could try asking for the debit card for something like a movie or grocery store, and going to the bank. There's the matter of ensuring your parents don't read the subsequent bank statement, if they're in the habit of doing so.
As for a successful lie, could you say you incurred a debt with your friends, want to loan them a sum, or wish to make a purchase of some sort and vastly exaggerate the cost? For these, it'd probably work best to cut the cost in half by taking care of your own fees first.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
You should come clean to your parents. They might be able to get you off the hook if you give back everything you took, in saleable condition, and agree to stay off the premises.
Then again, I don't think a person can just walk into a store, realize they're low on money, and only THEN decide to start shoplifting. I don't know how you two youngsters do things, but when I realize I need new clothes, I know how much I have to spend on them and plan accordingly. (I can usually see this coming...y'know, holes in things and worn out soles and whatnot) What I don't do is go steal and get caught. Maybe if you have to man up and bail yourself out or go to jail, you will be more thoughtful in the future.
Unless you have been STRUCK BY LIGHTNING and are NAKED IN PUBLIC, you do not need clothes so badly that you should be stealing them. Make do with what you have until you can get three bucks together and go to Goodwill. I grew up poor, and still shop at Goodwill even though I'm a college grad with a decent career. So if it's good enough for me, it sure as hell is good enough for you.
You should really just come clean with your parents. While shop lifting is a STUPID idea, your parents are going to be more pissed when they find out you didn't tell them...If you still need cash do you have a list of cards you have for sale?

Everything was given back in fine condition, and we had to agree to stay off any Kohl's premises. Even with all that, we still have to fulfill this civil demand. It's not a legal thing though, but if we don't pay it, they can then press charges.
Quote from Pringlesman »
If you still need cash do you have a list of cards you have for sale?
I don't have a list online. Most of the rare cards I had have already been stolen, although I still have maybe 50. I have loads of commons/uncommons. I'd rather not sell online though as that would also require me making sure my parents don't see any envelopes with money I get or whatever.
Bizkit, you really made me lose respect for you. Again, she's using you. Get it into your head dude. SHE needed clothes and USED YOU! In other words, SHE is responsible, and SHE has to pay.
There's more to it as we also were going to just hang out together afterwards.. Also, she could've gone to the store by herself, so she didn't need me to take her or anything liek that.
You have shoplifted because she needed clothes, and she's your ex? I mean, if my ex would ask me this, I'd say no, and if I did, SHE shoplifted. Not you. And she FORCED you to shoplift.
She did the actual shoplifting. I had no merchandise on me, but being with her I have to pay the same amount. And I can't act innocent either as I have shoplifted a little before, just never been caught.
I'd rather not get into anything more regarding her. Trust me, I've heard it all before, and I know what I SHOULD DO, but letting go of her is extremely difficult. It's also all a topic for another day.

Heh, I had the same thing happen to me when I got popped for shoplifting. They will be sending you a notice of it in the mail so make sure you intercept. I recognize issue blindness when I see it so I won't even touch the girl thing. I don't even know if you can do what I'm about to suggest because you're under 18 but I know local plasma banks in the area that give $100 for the first two plasma donations (within a week of each other) and then $50 for each two after (again they have to be within a week) You can do this every week at the one near me. Other than that, pawn shops are probably going to be your best friend if it's that important to you.
That being said I strongly advise you to tell your parents. Yes, you will probably be gounded without car keys for a while and not be able to hang out with the girl but it's the best way to go. You didn't even take anything. I don't know if they can prosecute or not (they can't in MI) but you need to worry about yourself primarily. You're a smart man, though. You will figure it out.

Well.. if you have some money cards you could try selling those.
I'm fairly certain I need the debit card to withdraw money. I can cash checks I have without parental consent. However, the way it's been working lately is that at the end of the week I give my check to my mom, tell her if I need any money taken out, and she does it all when she cashs her checks.
Probably not.
Probably, but I'd need a pretty big lie to why I need in the neighborhood of $400.
I have a few weeks, probably over a month. I've sold cards on Ebay before, with the help of my dad since I don't have my own account or anything.
My friends already all know what it's for, and two of them have already helped out greatly and I feel bad asking them for money.
Precisely why I asked for legal options.
It's not underage drinking. I'm going to PM a mod and ask if it's okay to say it. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to, but I just want to be on the safe side.
I can make whatever time is necessary probably.
I haven't played Magic for a really long time.
Yeah, as I mentioned, gonna try that.
I'd do this if I didn't have such a close family, but all the relatives that live nearby talk to my parents often and everything, and I don't want to raise any suspicion.
Don't kill me if I say yes?

That said, I can recommend a paper route or a temp agency as ways to get hired quickly for second jobs. That's how most Americans raise extra money, is a second job. I'd say if you had given it a little forethought, you could have used the end of college terms and high school to make extra money tutoring math or languages.
If you are already making OK cash and have decent credit, you might be able to get a small payday loan, but don't do this lightly as it will end up costing you about $500 when all is said and done.

Everything was given back in fine condition, and we had to agree to stay off any Kohl's premises. Even with all that, we still have to fulfill this civil demand. It's not a legal thing though, but if we don't pay it, they can then press charges.
I don't have a list online. Most of the rare cards I had have already been stolen, although I still have maybe 50. I have loads of commons/uncommons. I'd rather not sell online though as that would also require me making sure my parents don't see any envelopes with money I get or whatever.
There's more to it as we also were going to just hang out together afterwards.. Also, she could've gone to the store by herself, so she didn't need me to take her or anything liek that.
