I've been browsing the forums, and some of the topics have got me thinking: Exactly how far back should a person be able to remember events with some clarity? I've been realizing that my memories of my childhood have become EXTREMELY hazy. The farthest back I can remember with ease is junior high school, though I could say that I might remember bits and pieces of middle school life if I think hard enough.
And it's not just memories about school, either. I've been feeling that all the friends I made when I was little are being lost to me. I can only remember names, and nothing more.
So how hard should it be to remember events/people/etc.? I'm almost 22 now, so I'm talking about things around 10 years ago.

I generally find myself memorizing more of the extremes. By that I mean those times in my past in which I experienced some form of trauma, some extremely happy moment, or some other event that meant something to me.
Like I remember back to when I was about 5. I remember the whole day pretty clearly when a Tornado hit my house which sent me going off about it and now I'm in college for it. I remember a lot of christmases... etc, etc.
I'm 19 now. I don't generally have a good memory and I don't remember many things but the high majority of my early memories were important, happy, or traumatic events. Those seem to be the ones you cling on to.
I'm seventeen, the farthest I can remember is moving into a new home, sometime around age 3 or 4. However, mostly I remember it because I keep telling myself that its my first memory. I also think that memory is based on what is important to year. I can't remember much of my seventh grade year, as it was extremely boring. Ditto for 3rd and 4th. I can remember plenty of my 2nd grade year though. (2nd grade was the first time I went to public school)
I can't remember everything off the top of my head, like what my early years were like. But the smaller memories usually branches off of those great/traumatic events. Now I can't remember point "D" that clearly, but when I remeber point "A", it usually reveals point "B", which reminds me of "C" and then I remember point "D". And though "D" is not as crystal clear as "A", it still is remembered and not totally forgotten.
And it's not just memories about school, either. I've been feeling that all the friends I made when I was little are being lost to me. I can only remember names, and nothing more.
So how hard should it be to remember events/people/etc.? I'm almost 22 now, so I'm talking about things around 10 years ago.
