Ever since last weekend, my sleep cycle's been a little bit off - at least, I've never had it happen before and haven't ever heard of it happening to anyone else. I only get tired every other night. If I try to sleep during those half of the nights when I'm not tired, it doesn't get me anywhere. On the half of the nights when I do sleep, I'm out for 10-12 hours (for reference, I used to get 5-7 hours every night before this started happening). I'm acting perfectly fine, in fact, I yawn half as much as I used to over the course of the day, and I find it's much easier to focus between midnight and 7am, so I'm getting much more done.
I'm just wondering how weird this is, if it's insomnia, and if it's something I should give much thought to in general.

My anecdotal evidence disagrees with yours! EXPLAIN THAT!
Depends on your age. Most teens go through a span where they need a lot more sleep. When I was seventeen, I would sleep upwards of 10 hours a day if given the chance and still be tired. Though I'm sure it could happen at any age. I think irregular sleep patterns are only an issue if they persist for a long time or if they greatly impact your life somehow.
Hmm.. well, I'm 20 and I'm still awake. This whole weekend has been weird for me. Friday I napped from 3pm to 9pm and went to bed at 4am. Last night I went to bed at 6:30am and woke at 1pm. And now it's almost 6am and I'm probably gonna wake at 11am. Go figure
Well, I hit a long period of almost no sleep around 14, but other than that I've never had lasting irregular sleep. But even my sleep now isn't irregular; it's a very regular cycle, but at the same time nothing I've ever heard of before. Oh, I'll be 19 in a couple weeks.
But yeah, I guess it's nothing to worry about, just kinda strange.

That is pretty weird. I've had some weird sleep schedules in my time though. One thing you could do is, on the night where you get tired, set an alarm so you only sleep 6 hours. This way you probably should get tired the next night. Although, if it's not really getting in the way of your schedule... Is it??
The only time i've experienced anything remotely like this is related to jetlag. I'm only 14, and I completely resent sleep. I purposely only get around 7 hours a day. I think its a waste of time. xP
Unless this pattern really throws off your life or your job, I wouldn't bother with seeking help. Maybe it'll stop.
Get up and go to bed at pretty much the same time every night/morning, even if you are tired or havent slept, begin your day anyway and it will discipline you to be a more regular sleeper
exercise every day.
don't eat heavy meals before bed.
if you can't fall asleep after 30 minutes, get up out of bed and go find something restful to do. don't just sit in bed reading or eating or anything else.
stay away from caffeine
don't take naps.
I'm closest to Mikey...I just turned 17 in March and before then and now, I can sleep anywhere from 7 to 13 hours a day and I'm still dead beat tired the whole time. I really hope it stops because I miss my 5 hours a night and not being tired. I was very producitve back then. Lol, by last then I mean when I was like 15....maybe my body's lagging and just trying to make up for all that time it missed?

Or, you might be suffering from a medical problem...thyroid problems, diabetes, anemia, sleep apnea or breathing troubles at night, including allergies; depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, heck even worth getting tested to see if you might have mono, especially if you've been quite ill feeling lately.
@Black Megatog: I agree with you that sleep time is unproductive and I have always begruged myself sleep time to get the most out of every day. However, sleep is when your body repairs itself and returns to its natural state, so if you skimp on sleep it will catch up with you over the years. People tend to develop heart and vascular troubles if they get less than 6-8 hours of sleep a night for many years. Mild chronic sleep deprivation can also screw up your metabolism and blunt your concentration and mental faculties. You may end up gaining unwanted weight and having difficulties at work, and never know why until you start letting your body get the sleep it needs.

I do 9+ hours a night minimum sure its annoying losing hours that could be spent elsewhere or whatever but it is far worth it in the long run.
