ive found that weed helps me sleep, smoking weed will put you to sleep.
ha that one works pretty great actually even if you didnt really want to go to sleep... i in no way condone that though..... unless your gf does
alcohol is no solution either..... passing out does not = sleep
As long as it's not disc 2 of Echoes. Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-7) lasts just long enough to get you drowsy, then Time kicks in. Anyone who's heard Time knows what I mean.
oh no, I just meant that Pink Floyd is so incredibly boring that I immediately fall asleep whenever I hear it
Liquor is not the best cure for insomnia. It will put you to sleep, but it hinders your ability to go into REM sleep. So you won't feel very rested if it works.
Anyways, is this a regular thing? I think everyone can't get to sleep every once in a while. You might have something important the next day to do that you can't get your mind off of, or some thought that you are dwelling on that makes it hard.
If it happens often, it could be something as simple as caffine, lack of exercise, or depression. If it is a regular happening, so much so it disrupts your life you should probably see a doctor.
If it is just occasional, get up, go for a walk, clear your head, and go to sleep.

But completely disregarding everything above, IMO the best song ever is Beer by Reel Big Fish. It is one of those songs like Iron Man and Back in Black and Money and Stairway. It is just completely lightning in a bottle and it is so rare to find that. So there you go, my answer.
There is always the option of NOT trying to do anything, then simply letting your body fall into its own rhythm. That's what I do and how I live: by my body signals. If I'm hungry, I eat till I'm full. Thirsty? Drink something. Sleepy? Sleep till either I wake up or my alarm goes off. Not sleepy? Stay active till I can't anymore, then lounge about till I drift off to sleep.
This is what I'm currently doing, and everyone I know hates it. My mom wakes me up all the time if I'm asleep, saying its not normal to sleep in the afternoon(even if I went to bed around 10AM) Basically I sleep 6-9 hours a night for a week, miss a night of sleep, sleep 10-16 hours one of the next 2 nights, then cycle it all back to the beginning.
I've tried a couple of things to try to get out of this. Originally I asked my doctor for something to help me sleep. I was awake for 70+ hours with a terrible headache, then I started seeing stuff out of the corner of my eye. Never took that stuff again, and have been scared out of sleep medicine since. Exercise works for me sometimes, but sometimes I'll still be awake and then just be physically tired, but not mentally. I've also tried doing mental activities, but sadly those just entertain me and keep me up longer.
Basically exercise during some point in the day is your best bet IMO. If you live a sedate lifestyle, and don't use any of your energy you have a tendency to not be tired after a normal 16-18 hours. I noticed my sleep vastly improving when I had a warehouse job, and was basically walking around picking up heavy things for 8 hours.
Also I'd strongly suggest not using alcohol as a sleep aid. You might end up in a situation where you need the alcohol to go to sleep, and then you're basically screwed. Happened to an aquaintence of mine, he's an alcoholic now....

This does not really sound like insomnia. More of a problem with you natural clock. If you usually go to bed early in the morning like at 10am or what not, and then sleep normally, it is probably this. I would suggest trying to stay up a few hours later each day. If you go to bed at 10am try going to bed at 12pm the next day, 2pm the next, 4 the next etc.

This is how I managed my sleep cycle before I got a job and had to switch to heavy-duty sedatives. The human body seems to be designed for a daily cycle of 25-26 hours, and trying to change that to suit a job just isn't easy.

Hey all... I'm retired, not dead. Check out what I'm doing these days (and beg me to come back if you want):
Melatonin tablets, they put you to sleep rather quickly and effectively. Just make sure you don't have anything less than 12 hours later as you'll be dead tired, even after a 10 hour sleep.

I think I might try to reset my clock. I had a good night sleep last night, and I woke up for the MaRo Bash, but then the Wiki went public tonight and I've been working on it ever since just.. doing Color Pie stuff. I'm addicted, I just can't stop typing. XP
I'm so dizzy and tired though...

Getting the last word does not mean that you win the argument.
Since I myself have been having issues sleeping (either it being falling asleep or I fall asleep fast then keep waking up during the night). I've done a few things that works some nights and not others.
1. Pull out my iPod and listen to instrumental/slow songs with minimal lyrics so I'm not tempted to wake up and try to mouth the lyrics.
2. Pull out my laptop check a few things if I'm expecting e-mail or whatever then put it away and fall asleep.
3. Read a bit prior to trying to fall asleep using either a flashlight, or turn on my bedroom light to read (Bad Idea since that wakes up others in the house)
4. Or what bloodydoves suggested which is relax your body until you reach a state of tiredness, and then just fall asleep.
I really wouldn't suggest any form of drugs/alcohol since I know of a lot of people who are addicted to them then they can't like start say one drink and not go back for more...
A relative of mine is on ambien and that seems to be helping them a lot.
Though these aren't for everyone, I haven't really found a "cure all" for it, hopefully I find one soon since I find myself pulling all-nighters frequently, and I'm not that plesant the next day.

I'll say. You're damn grouchy as HELL the next day (I say hi, they smack me, and they hit HARD.)
Really, Zyrakris (man, I love typing that) try relaxing your mind and body. If you do that, you'll find that you're body sets itself to whatever works for it. If that entails sleeping till noon, then you'd best build your schedule around that consideration. For example, I took two study halls this year, so that I could stay up late and sleep in (my high school lets seniors off-campus for study hall), since my body works like that. I need weird hours of sleep, and built my schedule to accommodate that.
Sorry...I'm trying to get better about it though. But at any rate, thats for a different time and not on the forums.
Oh I've also found out changing the temperature in whatever room you're in seems to help. Like I'll shut my door completely, let the furnance kick on, and wrap myself under 1-2 blankets (3 blankets if I'm sick). For me warmth works well, but for some cold works better.
And I sleep in what's comfortable, I.E. sleep pants and a big shirt. Tight clothing isn't recommended since at times it'll get tight (obviously) then probably making it difficult to breathe and breathing tends to slow down when you're sleeping.

The light from your computer stimulates something in you that keeps you awake, I heard that somewhere, so first thing: stop reading on the comp. When you have nothing to do (with the comp on there's always random surfing), you will inevitably go lay down.
It generally takes me a while to sleep, mostly because when I'm not tired, I lay down and can't shut my brain off, instead it drifts between one inane topic to another no matter how hard I try to relax. Eventually, all this thinking tires me out and I start to doze off, but it takes a while.
My recommendation: Just lay down and try to relax, it'll come.
my advice regarding getting some sleep is to work out in the morning or afternoon. i read something somewhere that it would help you sleep better in the night. eating healthier foods and relieving stress may also boost sleep.
the other solution is overwork. as a student, i find it impossible to have imsomnia as i work so late that i usually can't help but go to sleep.
I often find I have problems getting to sleep, mostly my brain not knowing when to shut the hell up. Try to not eat anything, and only drink water/milk 2-3 hours before you go to sleep. Sleeping on a full stomach/bladder is incredibly difficult.

Do threads in this forum ever not get hijacked by the magical invisible hand of the market guys?
i understand that drinking a lot before sleep is uncomfortable but i think that eating a big meal actually makes ppl want to go to sleep. hormones from the brain are sent to the body to induce drowsiness to aid in the digestion of food.
Ney is right, exercise does help, but sometimes it hasn't helped me.
My best way to fight insomia is to try to plan an event late night with friends. Like watch movies or go out, etc. This way, I'm atleast spending time with people instead of just "watching tv" or going on forum sites;)
I tried something last night for the first time, and while I'm not sure it will cure insomnia, it certainly helped me to relax to a degree that I haven't felt in a long time (or maybe ever). It's called Hemi-Sync, and it's basically an audio file that affects brainwaves. There are various versions of it.
I'm going to try it again tonight. I'll try to remember to post here again if it continues to work for me.
i just realized the cheapest and most effective way of getting some sleep but i'm not sure if it's appropriate for this forum. let's just leave it with it with HAVE SEX. hormones go to your brain that make you sleepy naturally. you won't even get any side effects other than drowsiness and a feeling of faint weakness.

Thats a great point, exercise in the morning will set up your body to want to shut down.
Marijuana is another great option, the only problem is you may become relient.
Oh yeah, and it's an illegal narcotic.
Pot's not a narcotic. Illegal substance, maybe, but that's also kinda relative.
