"While AMC's The Walking Dead explores life after an unexplained outbreak has turned everyone into zombies, Syfy's Helix goes in the opposite direction and looks to tell an outbreak origin story."
Because of my handle i had to give this show a try. I watched both episode 1 and 2. Its not that bad i enjoyed it. Its like a mix of the walking dead/outbreak/the first resident evil.
The trailers I just dug up didn't look terrible, but I'm still hesitant just because it's syfy. That channel is just that: syfy, not science fiction. Warehouse 13 (that's syfy right?) and Dr. Who and Stargate (I didn't hate atlantis, but it's not my favorite), they just aren't my thing. I like science fiction, but most syfy shows just shove every single generic scifi/fantasy trope into the show one episode at a time (I like elements of x-files, but it felt so episodic last time I went to watch it (and they investigate basically every possible myth/theory/whatever) that I stopped after two seasons or so- nostalgia wasn't enough to keep me in it, maybe watching it with someone else +nostalgia..).
The first trailer basically showed nothing, and the first words were 'a team of scientists' which is basically every syfy show. A team or scientists, insert demon insert ghost insert alien insert evil AI insert magic relic and so on. The second one seemed okay though, and it does seem like it might have an overarching plot.
Syfy's Helix goes in the opposite direction and looks to tell an outbreak origin story."
Is that something syfy said? So the plot might go beyond 'scientists in lab work to contain X, face problems abcde...?
If nothing else I'll probably go dig up a little more information about it.
I'm still waiting for it to be released on Hulu before I watch it. I hate that SyFy's shows are weeks behind their original air date unless you already subscribe to certain cable providers.

Liking the show except for the casting character of Daniel (the head of security). The actor just does strike me as someone for that position.

I agree. However I'm not sure if that is just the actor himself or the character he's portraying. If its the latter, then he's doing a great job. But I'm not so sure...
Overall, I'm really digging this show right now. I'm sure a lot of sci-fans it may be to slow paced, but I think it works for the premise of the show. I'm just not sure how long they can continue with the show when the characters are so isolated. That can only go so far, right?
At any rate, I'm a fan. Good acting, good writing and storyline so far....

(about the English language) It's kinda like a raft that was cobbled together from parts of three different boats and since then has been kept barely afloat with crude repairs every time a leak appeared.

This the show is pretty sweet. Im just not sure what they can do for the end of the season. I am hoping it doesnt go the route of prison break where at the end of the season they break out of the jail and every subsequent season is the same thing with a different setting. Though, this show they never get out of the lab and keep going with that etc.

Oh god I hope they don't go that route. You are right. Prison Break was great t.v. the first few seasons, but after that? It was like "oh crap! We have a hit show on our hands and they've escaped, now what do we do?" I stopped watching after the Central-American jail storyline (I forget the actual country, but I don't think it matters too much).
As much as I like it, what more can Helix do? Keep bringing in extras/new characters via supply drops, etc.? Keep focusing on the characters they do have, most definitely... but eventually.... it could become stale. Of course, all that is speculation, hoping there is even a second season... because we aren't done with the first one yet!!!

I never finished prison break. I stopped watching when they got out of the jail in the first season. But i can see helix writing its self into a corner pretty quick. I hope that is not the case but it looks like it has one of two directions after this season.
Edit: just watched the latest episode and it seems pretty all over the place. I am not really sure whats going on in the show and where its going.Ill keep watching it though.
So I just watched last night's episode and I have to say "Finally!"
They've been beating around the bush for a few episodes and it was getting stale to me.
It was no surprise to me that Hataki was Julia's father. And the way they tried to build suspense toward the big "reveal" was...well... not too suspenseful... at least to me. He may have well have just said "No, Julia... I am your father" straight from Empire Strikes Back.
Don't get me wrong, though. I really enjoyed the episode and I'm hooked on the show.
PLUS they closed with Gary Jules's version of "Mad World" (which I have absolutely loved that song since I first heard it in Donnie Darkko).

Season finale was good, can't believe it played out like that.
And we won't get season 2 until 2015...
Really? I personally did not like the show. It started off amazingly. But towards the end they introduced all this crazyness and it seemed like it had no idea where it was going. I may give season two a try but as of right now im not sure. Such a good name though...

Enjoyed the first season. And yeah, the wait for season two is going to be long...
I have to mention... Although there are some protected characters the series revolves around, I like how the series killed off a couple 'main characters' during the first season; referencing (or hoping?) The Walking Dead where characters die off to further develop the storyline.
Anyway, looking forward to season two (ugh, 2015).
