Nickelodeon just posted the Legend of Korra: Book Two trailer online. On my iPad so don't have a link right now. There's no dialogue, but it looks like there's a pretty big spoiler in it... I won't say anything more.
At Comic-con it was revealed there would be two episodes featuring the first Avatar. This avatar is played by the guy who plays Glenn on the Walking Dead and will feature a different art style.

that sounds really neat
I really enjoyed the out of the past flashback episode (spoiler'd out of courtesy)

Quick question for anyone reading this - where can I watch this show now that I've cancelled Cable? Does Nickelodeon put these online after they air? I just check the website and it looks like all of Book One is streaming.
Very disappointed. Only first two episodes, so I'm convinced that this might have just been a bad first batch, but man. My friends and I didn't have much positive to say after watching that. A few things that bugged me in particular:
-Writing: Weak, particularly for Korra and Mako. Their continued romance remains as forced as ever, and Mako got some pretty awful one-liners (that whole chase scene phrase, and then the fact that he actually admitted to preparing it in advance made me possitively cringe)
-Delivery: Most of these lines are poorly delivered, especially by Korra who seems to go from friendly to angry outburst almost on a dime. The robo-twin delivery feels off as well. I can see where they're going, but it's almost coming off as fake because it's so over the top.
-Avatar state: I'm with Tenzin, when did the avatar state go from being an almost God-form to being how I win a airscooter race, or make a slightly bigger fireball. And how does she have so much control over the avatar state when it took Aang the entire series to be able to activate it? Isn't her issue supposed to be that she has far more limited control of her spiritual powers?
More in-depth comments to come sometime tomorrow hopefully.
I generally enjoyed the first two episodes, but I do have question or two.
Specifically, when they went to that air temple, where did those other air monks come from? I'm assuming they are air monks from how they dress and talked, but I was under the impression that Tenzen and his family where the only airbenders in existence at this point.
Looks like Korra's uncle is being pretty aggressive towards the Southern water tribe, what role do his son/daughter have in that?
Those people aren't airbenders, they're acolytes. Regular people who've tried to take up the airbender culture
Quirk
I'd say its her lack of spirituality is why she is abusing the avatar state. Plus its possible Aang just told Tenzin how he managed to gain control. That, or, korra has excelled at the power aspects of bending. That she can control the avatar state and used it to try to physically attack the spirits, instead of trying to use it to help her communicate, is evidence of this.
As to the plotting. I really enjoyed it, they did a looooot of character introductions in these two episodes and I'm surprised they fit in as much as they did.
I don't really get your point about delivery. They have noticible tone, but I dunno how anything was said badly
I felt like these two episodes was a reminiscent of the entire first season. Poor voice acting, weird character developments (for the few that do) and rushed ending
I actually enjoyed the episodes. They weren't mindblowing but it was the season premier, which was a lot of "hey, remember this character?!".
I found Mako and Korra's relationship to be less organic than Aang and Katara's but she is also a teenager who thinks she is in love. Their relationship feels forced because it is force. You are lying if you didn't think about girls/boys when you were a teenage. It's that classic "He's cute and has proximity to me, we are destined to be together!" They obviously won't end up together.
As for Korra, I love her character. Her mood swings are PERFECT for a defiant teenage girl. Her arrogance helps sell the "abuse" of the avatar state. Something Aang never did. He also perceived it has a sacred "last resort" thing that should be treated as something to be cherished. Korra sees it at HYPER KORRA MODE, this is due to her lack of discipline and lack of spiritual link.
I also enjoyed the spirits. They give a whole new dynamic to the combat scenes.
All in all, not GREAT but not horrible.
For the record, I am glad they finished the "Go to the South Pole" quest. It didn't need 4 episodes.
Saw the third episode. Is it wrong of me to be more interested in...
... what is happening at the air temple rather than what is happening at the southern water civ? Honestly, everything that happened down there was pretty predictable. I for one did not see the fact that Aang obviously favored his airbending son over the other children quite as much as he apparently did. I still want to know what sort of spiritual something happened in the avatar room.
In the south, the main thing I want is for the twins to get some character development already. I thought they had potential to be funny and weird and now they are just getting on my nerves. Yes, I get it, they think themselves superior to their southern relatives. Is that it? Well that and general rudeness?
I love how Unalaq is showing that Korra learned absolutely nothing from Tarrlok. That said, he gets a bit of a pass for being family...many people have a blind spot for family...but come on! All he's missing is the sign strapped to his back with a big neon arrow pointing at him and big, big letters that say OBVIOUSLY EVIL, DO NOT TRUST! It is the exact same thing. Someone of reasonable influence using the Avatar for his own agenda.
Well I thought tonight's episode wrapped up a lot as well as set us up for the rest of the season. I especially liked the end when
Eska showed up pissed off that she was dumped. Not only that, but she showed up with out her twin brother.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting her to actually care enough to have any sort of emotional response but I now look forward to her being developed as a character now whereas last week I was wonder if they were going to do anything with her at all.
I had somewhat high hopes for this show after a solid first season with mediocre ending at best. But after the past few episodes, I just want to throw in the towel.
You didn't like episode 6? I couldn't get enough. The shadow on his face as the chair turned.
I kind of wish this show was an hour long.
I'm not particularly fond of the direction Korra S2 is going. It is quite simply, a mess to me.
In S1, we had a fairly solid storyline and a nice overarching theme. The characters interactions with each other are solid and aren't done just for the sake of doing it. The tone was dark which I applaud the makers for trying to set, I mean seriously, the scene at the end where Tarrlok commits murder suicide took serious balls to pull off. Some might even interpret Korra's cliff scene at the end to be suicide contemplation. The villains of S1 was somewhat believable (Noatak was much better than Tarrlok but w/e, can't have them all)
Now we get to S2 where the storyline is jumping all over the place; Tenzin left rather quickly and now he has his own confusing story of him finding out at long last he was the spoiled brat of the family. Spirits/spirit world hasn't made its mark and so far it seems to be all about politics and family issues. There seems to be no theme at all with S2. S1 theme, right from the start, was fairly easy to notice. The tone of S2 is considerably lighter to the point where they almost force inject it with Bolin, Tenzin's family interaction, and Korra/Mako's relationship. I especially have a gripe with Korra/Mako, not only was their relationship problems beaten to death within the first couple episodes, they are now trying to shove Asami back into the mix. Seriously? What, S1 all over again? That subplot was ok in moderation, but this is just way too much. I hate the villains of S2. Unalaq is like Tarrlok and both of them were bad, but at least Tarrlok had his brother to make up for him. Varrick is just
When Korra S1 came out, I seriously thought that they were trying to pull off something mature and cohesive that older folks can enjoy. I actually thought that the show, if pushed a bit further, could rival the maturity that Japanese anime had like Gundam Seed/00
I'll reserve judgment after some more episodes. I don't have a problem with filling in plot hole details through Tenzin's interactions with his father and siblings. The direction that we could see old man Zuko, though, is pretty good.
I agree about the maturity issues, however the politics go to the heart of having something different. The water tribes this time being the source for villains rather than the fire benders is something much more interesting and building on some of the old politics with the original world. It just seems that there are some things trying to occur with the larger plot, such as making the world smaller without needing Appa 2 to fly around the world.
They're world rebuilding.

Tenzin's side story seems completely irrelevant though. They could cut the vacation sideplot out and we still wouldn't miss anything

Seems. There have been a lot of episodes in the The Last Airbender that only developed characters and not plot and they were some of the most enjoyable ones.

I'm more concern about:
I'm thinking that the Northern Tribe might aggregate the spirit world like Tonraq did except it's Unalaq this time around.
