I've only seen a handful of series finales in my life, so I'd say that Buffy the Vampire Slayer wins by default as the final episodes of both Seinfeld and X-Files sucked in ways I'd get infracted for describing. Still, the Buffy finale was pretty good in its own right.

"...because without beer, things do not seem to go as well."
So terrible they never even made it, in fact. Highlander ran six seasons.
The problem with finales is that unless a show runs its allotted time it doesn't get one.
Agreement on B5, Dead Like Me and Futurama. No love for Buffy, as it's not the end.
I hated the last ep of Buffy. I admit the necessity of making all the Potentials Slayers but it took away the coolness factor of there being only one Slayer. As for the upcoming "season 8", most fan aren't going to read the comic. Angel's season 5, was our 8th season and it was darned good.
Futurama; Not anime, but like most people have said it was a good last episode.
Cowboy Bebop; My favorite ending for anything I've ever seen/will see.
Witch Hunter Robin; Boo, not a big fan of this ending.
Full Metal Alchemist; You know, I saw the last episode and I thought to myself, WHAT?! Edward didn't bang Wemry...and then I watched the movie hoping for some Ed n' Wemry action, anything, but no. Very dissapointed. Good series overall, bad ending.

I didn't like the series finale of buffy. I think more people should have died. Season five's finalae would have been a great series ender.
MASh would have to be #1 for me. Angel is number two. I loved the fact that the chances for survival were slim and none.

Someone alert the presses! I believe we may have found the next Roger Ebert.
On an animated-related note, the finale of Neon Genesis Evangelion is the penultimate mind-freakery ending; the whole thing about the entire universe simply being a creation of the character's mind was pretty weird, and the way that it was presented was completely off-kilter. In a way, it was genius, and in a way, it was terrible.

My top 1 worst ending in Anima goes to G-Gundam. I think it would of been better if he killed the girl, instead of saying "I love you." to stop the whole world from ending. Also it was a great series one of the best in Gundam, besides Gundam Wing. It still gets worst ending ever and hope I am not the only one.
Second one I say was bad was DBZ, they could of at least did the episodes of the tornament. Also GT never needed to be made, they sould of made it apart of DBZ. I kind of liked GT's ending and left some though on what would happion next.
Best anima ending I have to go with thease 3.
1. Trigun(Ended with alot to think about and possible run off.)
2. Outlaw Star(Same as Trigun, just I hated Jeans new haircut. Other than that good ending.)
3. Yugioh!(Great ending for the original series. I liked the last duel and a worth watch. :D)
Not only was "All Good Things" one of the best TNG episodes ever, it is one of the best television episodes ever.
I agree. A terrific send-off to a great series.
I was also a fan of the Newhart finale. That was such a brilliant and unexpected twist. Usually, the "zomg it was all a dream!!!11" ending is a huge copout, but it definitely worked for Newhart. Well done.
alright I know I'm gonna catch so much crap for posting this. But my favorite series finale was the one for teen titans. I love how they waited until the very end to bring up terra.

I'm not gonna lie- possibly the ONLY truly satisfying finale that I have seen to date was the final episode of "Cowboy Bebop:" The Real Folk Blues Part Two. That show is probably my favorite fictional television series to date, and I thought that the end was the only logical conclusion to the 25 previous episodes. Yes, we all saw it coming from a mile away, but Bebop is, quite simply, a modern tragedy. Great stuff.

I too enjoyed the Newhart finale. I would also like to echo the sentiments of those who have mentioned Star Trek: TNG and M*A*S*H*.
I would like to comment on the X-Files finale, however. I have mixed emotions about it. It's my favorite show of all time, but the last three seasons were not overly good. With that in mind, the finale was fine, especially since it accomplished what it was intended to do: set up the second movie. Naturally, now that the movie is probably not going to happen, it seems more than a bit lacking.
Side note: I felt that the writing in the last 3 seasons were the weak point, not the replacement of Mulder & Scully with Doggett & Reyes; they were fine, IMO, and there were several very good episodes (notably "Nothing Important Happened Today I/II", "Jump The Shark", "Release")
Personally, I think that Season 7 should have been the final season and that "Closure" should have been the series finale. It tied up the biggest loose end in the series, and it was a very good, incredibly touching episode to boot. Definitely one of the five best episodes, IMO, with "Two Fathers" and "One Son" being the top two.
Just wanted to add Arrested Development as a good series finale (Season 2). Although it was cancelled, and it was the funniest show on t.v., the finale was well done. So many twists and the humour is exactly my 'kind of funny'
Best finale: Star Trek TNG (obv)
Worst finale: Star Trek Enterprise (if you can even call These Are The Voyages... a finale, Demons and Terra Prime were Enterprise's real ending)
Worst finale yet to air: Stargate SG-1 (why end ten years of mostly good TV with
photoshopperies of the cast getting old and dying?
I'm not sure I'll even bother to watch it next week)
Most "WTF"-inducing finale: Sliders (ending a show with a cliffhanger and not even TRYING to resolve it in another medium is the height of rudeness)
Honorable mention: Star Trek Voyager (Trek overdid time travel, and while Endgame was a good timeline-screwing story, Year of Hell was better)

The finale that had the most viewers( in America ) was MASH, and it held the record for most viewers for a single television show for I believe somewhere around 30 years. (Was finally beaten a few years ago by a Super Bowl:mad:) That being said, I will give honorable mentions to Cowboy Bebop an Breaking Bad.

Setting aside hte fact that this conversation is 3 years old, because I like the topic,
The finale for farscape was awesome. mostly because it ended with the (seeming) destruction of two of the main characters out of the blue followed by the words "To be continued".
From a "completed the series" standpoint I'd go with DS9. I haven't gotten through TNG yet (the first couple seasons are god awful bad for the most part).

Time flies, bLatch, this topic is over six years old
While I love Farscape and it's probably one of my favorite TV shows of all time (one of only a handful I've watched beginning to end more than once), I'm not sure it can count because of the Peacekeeper Wars miniseries, which wrapped up the loose ends of the show.
The best series finales I know of are:
The Wire - It does a great job of mirroring the beginning of the series and shows how nothing really ever changes. It was a very satisfying conclusion to the series for me. Breaking Bad has a similar feel on the conclusion.
Angel - I just love the idea of ending the show with the characters probably going to die, going out being big damn heroes.
Battlestar Galactica - While elements of the finale weren't that good, the first two episodes of the three part finale are fantastic television. If it had ended when they jumped to Earth instead of with another full episode attempting to wrap things up but not really succeeding, it would have been my favorite show ending of all time.
I think this topic is a little hard to discuss because TV these days reaches a broad audience and even the most popular shows in the nation have large groups of the population that have never seen said show.
But I'll post my particular favorite: House MD
The show as a whole tried to explore a bunch of philosophical ideas, and they were always good about blatantly never choosing a side. And as a result it got you to think. I've considered rewatching the series just to see these conflicts again, but obviously there's the time factor.
The other thing the show did a lot was have House creatively come up with solutions to the problems he faced in each episode. The House-Wilson dynamic was awesome and you could count on several times a season they would have some kind of game/bet going on, and usually House won.
The series finale basically combined the two.
The whole time he was considering killing himself... and then all the times in the flashbacks where he asked people to help cover up the vandalism he did on the hospital... there was a lot to think about what was happening. And then you reach the end of the episode where he fakes his own death. I think the series finale would've been fine if he just died right there. But they had to go even further and it turned out that he ultimately he figured a way out of the situation, like usual. And in the most epic way possible.

I know, but the last episode was still the series finale, and was all we had for two years or so?
On that same note, the series finale of Bufrfy was the last episode of season 5 (when it was canceled). It was written as a closer, to finish the story and it did. Then they brought her back, and the next two season just weren't quite the same.
Battlestar Galactica - While elements of the finale weren't that good, the first two episodes of the three part finale are fantastic television. If it had ended when they jumped to Earth instead of with another full episode attempting to wrap things up but not really succeeding, it would have been my favorite show ending of all time.
I didn't make it past the "oh look, these crew members have been psylons all along, despite the fact that its not actually possible for the show to have happened they way it did if they were". It was something that they clearly added as a twist after the previous seasons had been written and it was inconsistent.

It was something that they clearly added as a twist after the previous seasons had been written and it was inconsistent.
Meh. They make up reasons for it that make sense in the show's universe... kind of.
I agree with you on Buffy, though, the 5th season finale was pretty great.
I'd say the same thing about Supernatural's 5th season finale, which was intended to be the series finale.
It's hard to think of other great finales off the top of my head, because good finales usually bring closure to a series so I don't remember them as much as bad finales, or they suffer from the peak end rule.
The two that have stuck with me as just amazing final episodes were Babylon 5 and Newhart.
Even though I was young at the time I still remember my jaw hitting the floor watching the final episode of Newhart. I was too young to have watched the first series, but I still knew what it was and got the reference, and it blew me away that they would actually do something like that. Just an amazing and mind-blowing ending to a sitcom.
Babylon 5 was just, for me anyway, the perfect ending to the series. It seemed even greater at the time by comparison since the final season of the show was so awful. But the series finale itself was a jewel.
I think I've posted most of my favorites elsewhere on here, but hey here's another go.
The Shield- Looking back, I really enjoy the final scene. It breaks a few illusions you have about the characters. There are a few other episodes from the shield that are really powerful as well.
The Wire- Wraps everything up nicely. The show is consistent to the end. The finale doesn't really try to crank it up a notch. It doesn't need to. It just gets the job done.
Dexter- Such a Shyamalan twist my head almost exploded.
Not. *shyamalan twist*
@Breaking Bad- it was good. Felt like the show still, but I felt like they could've used another one or two episodes to stretch things out.
as well as more about Jesse, I feel like he got left out a bit at the end, it may have been walt's ride but jesse was riding shotgun. It also seemed fairly predictable. Jesse escapes, Walt dies, bad guys die. There are good elements to it and I don't dislike it, but nobody was surprised by the general plot (there were some things I didn't expect, but most of those came in the final episodes directly before the finale)
@House- I liked it overall, it was one of the few shows I really enjoyed that I didn't originally watch in order. Just whatever episode was on or parts of marathons. I've since watched it in order (hadn't seen the finale until then) and it's House all the way through.
The show has its darker episodes, but nothing nearly like the ending. Cutner's death was surprising, but you saw everything move on. Wilson was there for the entire thing and was basically the last thing House had left. I think after so many seasons, ending without an impactful finale makes it feel like a show just kinda died off so they make sure something big happens, but that sort've sad ending didn't really mesh with my experience with the show. I don't not like the episode, I guess I'm just sad Wilson died. House 'solved' the problem at the end... but only the minor one. The big one is still gonna come crashing down at some point, and if he doesn't kill himself, many other smaller (but still large) ones are gonna find him as well because of what he did. The show was about a generally miserable person. Hope would've been a nice ending.
Six Feet Under's last 5 mins has been and probably always will be my favourite of all time.
Honourable mention to Breaking Bad, The Wire and The Shield
