I decided I'd start a thread on what teams people could think of as the most dominant teams, as in teams that would consistently be at the top or near the top of their league for a good amount of time.
One team I can think of is the Detroit Red Wings over the past 15 years or so, since they've been pretty successful over this time period, winning 4 Stanley Cups and still doing really well during seasons where they didn't win

Actually more like 20. 20 straight postseason trips. I agree, in the recent decades, the Wings are probably one of the most dominating teams in any sport.
Every sport will have it's era's though. NBA has the Lakers and Celtics that seem to win in spree's. MLB it's usually the Yankees dominating. NFL can get some teams that will win 2-3 Superbowls in a 5 year period which is great. Pats, Cowboys, 49ers.

I'd say Green Bay Packers deserve mention. They always have seemed to be a Tier 1 team in my eyes.

The Pittsburgh Steelers won 4 Super Bowls in 6 years during the 1970's (at the same time winning 8 straight division titles), then have been in 3 of the past 4 Super Bowls (winning two of them).
The only teams that have more NFL Championships racked up the majority of them during the pre-Super Bowl era (Green Bay, Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants have 37 total championships, but only 8 Super Bowls among them, whereas the Steelers have 6 Super Bowls alone).
In the Super Bowl era, the Steelers have probably been the most-consistently dominant team, with Dallas and Miami in the conversation as well.
The Green Bay Packers are one of the only teams to win two superbowls in a row, and they did it twice. Not to mention before the creation of the super bowl, they regularly won the "world championship."

10 NCAA national championships in 12 seasons? 4 of those teams going undefeated, including consecutive undefeated 30-0 seasons and 88 consecutive victories?
In college basketball, when players only started for 3 years then graduated?
Also, the US men's national basketball team? Since 1934, they've won 13 out of 16 possible gold medals (should be 14 but the refs stole one for Russia).
Russian synchronised swimming. They rather conspicuously started dominating 16 years after it became an Olympic sport (16 being the minimum age for Olympic athletes) and have not let up. Most notable is the duet of Anastasia Davydova and Anastasia Ermakova. Davydova took silver in 2001 with another partner, then joined with Ermakova in 2002, after which they took gold at every single international competition, including the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. I wish there were more videos online, but this one from 2007 is great, and this one is the sloppiest I've seen them perform. Mind-blowing.
Unfortunately, Ermakova decided to leave the sport a few years ago, though she recently announced that she's re-entering, while Davydova said she was done in 2010. Russian swimmers continue to dominate, but I'm still hoping they can reform for the 2012 Olympics.
The 1972 Men's Olympic basketball game is debatable. You play until the game is officially over.
Same way we managed to score a tying goal in the 1980 winter Olympics because the Russians started heading for the locker room at the end of the second period prematurely.
The US got a breakaway because of it and scored a goal with one second left in the second period. They ended up winning 4-3 because of it. Take that goal away and who knows how that game plays out.
The Yankees won or were in every Series from 1949-1960, except for 1954 and 1959 if I remember correctly.
Also...they outscored the Pirates 55 runs to 12 runs in the 1960 Series and lost in seven games. The best team there clearly didn't win.

What are you talking about? The Americans didn't give up on the play. The soviets got 2 do-overs when they didn't win the game. In a 1 point game, giving a team do-overs until they get it in the basket is like us flipping a coin, and you call heads, then get to flip until you get heads.
Though if I had been on the American team, i would have taken the silver medal because it is still a sport and a game. Horrible referees and bad bounces are not ultimately something you can control.
But i've watched that footage and ending and multiple shows covering that game, and that ending was an incompetent FARCE on the part of the officials, incompetent to the point of making it seem deliberate. The outcome is the outcome, ultimately, but that ending was 5 on 8 basketball. You can debate it, but it will merely lower your credibility if you argue the soviet side on that game.
Also, I agree with dcartist conerning the '72 basketball game. When people blame referees for losses, they're usually overlooking several things their team could have done to overcome whatever odds they were in. This is a rare exception.
The 70's Montreal Canadiens made the playoffs every year, won 6 Stanley Cups and have three of the 4 highest point totals for a single season. (Red Wings are second on the list with there 131 points in 1995). From 1948-1994 they made the playoff 45 out of 46 times.
Nba- Lakers (kobe, Shaq , etc..)
Nba - Bulls ( Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, etc..)
Nfl - Packers ( Brett Favre then Aaron Rogers. I also see this team winning 3 out of next 5 superbowls )
Mlb- Yankees (clemens, Jeter, etc..)
I know theyre have been better but im only 20 years old and these are the Most dominant teams ive noticed in my lifetime
The 2002-2006 NE Patriots should be mentioned too..
My father has a little joke about the Beautiful Game; "There are two rules to football. It's eleven versus eleven, and Germany always wins."
While they don't dominate in the sense of getting first all the time, Germany is one of the most consistent teams out there, to the point that my dad (A huge fan of his home team of Argentina) accepted defeat the moment they got pitted against Germany last World Cup, even though passion was still running high after they beat Mexico. True to his prediction, Argentina got massacred.

Pittsburgh Steelers, baby! If anybody else said another NFL team you were wrong. If you feel like arguing with me then go find me another team that's won more rings and then come back!

In almost fifteen years, it occurred only once that another team managed to finish in the top 2.
These are the decks that I have constructed, and are ready to play:

My DCI ELO Ratings - May they rest in peace :'(
They've won more Series than the next three teams combined.
27 Titles in less than a hundred years is just sick. Not to mention 36 pennants.
So they go to the play-offs on average every three years and win the whole thing an average of every four.
Detroit Red Wings are probably number two.
For just pure dominance of something that hasn't been around for ever?
Manchester United. What do they have now? Twelve titles in the nineteen years the English Premier has existed is beyond absurd.
New York Yankees
St Louis Cardinals

Patriots

Celtics
I want to say Bulls but they were only good w/ MJ and just started getting good again.
