Are there any books in the genre you've read and liked already? It might things easier.
However, Ernest Hemingway may have some of the qualities you're looking for. The Sun Also Rises features World War One veterans, bullfights, and travels across Europe, while For Whom the Bell Tolls is set in the Spanish Civil War. Both are written in a fairly straightforward, very strong style.
Depending on how adult themed you want them and how much the adventure matters. Clive Cussler writes a couple of series that are very good adventures with some adult theme under tones. Nothing XXX but reading is about imagination.
Would be easier if you gave us specific examples of books so that we can point you to similar ones.
It can be any type of Adventure book really. Whether it be a ScFy Adventure or a Wilderness Adventure it honestly doesn't matter to me. I love to read just about anything. I'm only looking for something more specific this time around.
I had begun reading A Simple Plan, but found out my wife had gotten to it first which left me with nothing new to read.
Edgar Rice Burroughs writes some of the best pulp adventure EVER! His Tarzan books are fantastic, especially the ones that are more fantastical and feature lizard men or animate skeletons. Though, his Sci-Fi adventures REALLY shine. The John Carter series is phenomenal, regardless of what you thought of the film (which I loved).
There is always Tolkein of course! The Hobbit is one of thebest adventures ever!
Flashman perhaps? I'd ask Blinking Spirit about that one, he was a fan of it.
I kind of like Riverworld and Jesus on Mars, both by the same author. While not the most original works, it had some themes in it that were a good premise.
