Chuck Berry, the perpetual wild man of Rock and Roll who helped define its rebellious spirit in the 1950's and was the sly poet laureate of songs about girls, cars, school, and even the "any old way you choose it" vitality of the music itself, sadly passed away last Saturday at the age of 90.
Famous for the hit single "Johnnie B. Goode" which was featured in the Back to the Future films while being the inspiration for many famous musicians such as the Beatles, Slash from Guns 'n' Roses, and many more as he cemented his place as the "Father of Rock and Roll":
Quote from Bruce Springsteen »
Chuck Berry was rock’s greatest practitioner, guitarist, and the greatest pure Rock and Roll writer who ever lived.
Quote from Drummer and Producer of Questlove »
Thou Shall Have No Other Rock Gods Before Him.
Quote from Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones »
His lyrics shone above others & threw a strange light on the American dream. Chuck you were amazing and your music is engraved inside us forever.
I always found it strangely reassuring that despite the deaths of so many legendary musicians, originators like Chuck, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis were still around. It made Rock and Roll seem somehow living, rather than just a piece of history. Sadly, those days are beginning to pass, and that, I feel, is why Chuck will be missed so much. Rock and Roll is forever in your debt.
