Been rolling on a pretty strong hip-hop kick recently. Biggie, Wu-Tang, Aesop Rock, Cage, & Nas, mostly. "Ether", from Nas's album Stillmatic, may be the best diss track ever; if it's not, it's only because "Hit em Up" can probably never be beaten.
Also: picked up two Anaal Nathrakh albums recently, both of which are pretty fantastic.

I've been on a similar kick recently. Aesop Rock is really good. I'd agree that Nas' "Ether" is the best dis track ever.
I stumbled upon a fantastic Rapper from my home state of Maryland that really needs more exposure. He goes by the name Cubbiebear and he SLAYS.
Which two Anaal Nathrakh albums did you pick up? My favorites are the latest two they've put out, although all of their material is good.

I'll look him up. I'm always looking for new hip-hop.

The Codex Necro & When Fire Rains Down from the Sky [etc]. I'm enjoying Codex Necro more between the two, but they're both pretty great. I guess if I had a complaint it would be that I prefer my black metal a little more raw. Actually, I want all my black metal to sound more or less like early Darkthrone, which is sort of an absurd expectation.

Yeah, their more recent material has more of a Death/Grind feel to it, mixed in to the Black Metal aspects. It's also a lot less raw. Honestly, I like their recent material a bit more mainly because of the songs "Shatter the Empyrean", "So Be It" and the re-recorded "Satanarchrist" (My personal 'Thrak favorite).
"The Supreme Necrotic Audnance", "Submission is for the Weak", "The Technogoat" and "When Fire Rains Down From the Sky Mankind Will Reap as it has Sown" are my favorites off of the two you've acquired, and are among my favorites the band has ever done.

Speaking strictly in terms of albums that came out this year:
Local Natives - Gorilla Manor
The Roots - How I got over
Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
Vampire Weekend - Contra
Sufjan Stevens - Age of Adz
Sleigh Bells - Treats
Beach House - Teen Dream
LCD Soundsystem - This is happening
Los Campensinos! - Romance is Boring
Jaguar Love - Hologram Jams
Hot Chip - One Life Stand
The Black Keys - Brothers
MIA - Maya
Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
Dreamwalker, I disagree on a couple of them and agree on others. Depends if you mean full albums - there are songs that need to be listened to off those CD's, but you don't need to listen to the whole thing in some cases.
Also, to not have The ArchAndroid on there is a crime against music! MUSIC I SAY.
The best song on One Life Stand, by the way, is Alley Cats. This is a fact. NOBODY CAN DISAGREE. ... Ever. ... Yeah.
The Planets Won't Let You Sleep Tonight is pretty great. I think. All they have out is an EP, but ... I was surprised. They're worth checking out.
Ooh, Cosmogramma was released this year. ... It's pretty great.

So... does anyone on MTGS listen to folk music? I don't think I've seen any mention of it =/
Recently I've been really into some pagan artists, like Omnia, Damh the Bard, Paul Newman, Faun, as well as new recordings of old folk songs. Mostly because I'm learning the Bodhran and play to songs like The Rocky Road to Dublin.
Oddly enough, I don't really mind folk (I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it, but I wouldn't complain)... but when it's mixed with metal, in 90% of cases, it just makes me cringe tbh. I honestly wish bands like Eluveitie and Ensiferum would hang up the skates.

Well, you've still got about fourteen hours before you're infracted for noncompliance. Talk to whomever you want.
Bands like Bathory, Ulver, etc are part of the 10% I really like. What I really don't like is the utterly horrendous folk/power or folk/melodeath hybrids that seem to plague metal nowadays.
Agalloch, I've never been really big on. Good band, but they should be a band that connects with me, but they just don't. :S And I've listened to a lot of their stuff too.
Neurosis I haven't really heard. Recs?

I listen to some Neofolk music, been getting into it more and more over the years.

Sol Invictus
Darkwood
Agalloch (The White EP)
October Falls (Early work)
Empyrium (Later work)
Uaral (Mixed with some doom/black metal elements)

I really like Ellis Paul as a folk musician, the album Speed of Trees is a great album.
Through Silver in Blood is their most known release and damn good mind you but I would also recommend The Eye of Every Storm, A Sun That Never Sets and my personal favourite Times of Grace.
I like classical opera by Baltic/Scandinavian composers but can't understand a word of it and it's (learning languages) something to do when leisure time and motivation next overlap. It's an unfortunate that there are but one high-quality orchestra about, but it only plays pop classical and/or opera, not Aho, Alfvén, Englund, Gade, Grieg, Norgaard, Sibelius (not even he is performed!), Pettersson, Saariaho, Svendsen, Tubin, etc.
Does anyone listen to anything classical beyond the occasional popular classical tune?
I already brought this up in the Hip Hop thread but I am drunk and feel it bears repeating. Childish Gambino is the one of (if not the) most amazing rapppers in the game right now. His rhymes are amazing and his beats are insane and thats not even mention that he is also an actor, comedian and writer. Check out Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) on Youtube, and listen to great tracks like Freaks and Geeks, ***** Look At Me Now, Be Alone and ☺☺☺☺ It All. I know it is weird to be asking for promotion for a rapper who has an amazing show on nbc and a popular sketch show on the internet but his rap is incredible and he spends a lot of time showing why his writing and rap is different spheres of interest. I cannot possible recommend him enough.
I'm rather surprised that there are so few fans of my favorite bands.
Built to Spill (I'd Hurt a Fly, Randy Described Eternity, Time Trap, Stab, etcetc), Modest Mouse (Whenever You See Fit, Interstate 8, Bukowski, Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Dramamine), Elliott Smith (Amity, Almost Over, Stickman, Roman Candle). I also like Radiohead, though I don't listen to them quite as much as the others, but they are far more popular.
Most of the songs I listed are from that era (Bukowski being the exception. I would've only been 10ish then, but I'd kill to have seen a live performance then, back when Truckers Atlas was a regular part of their sets. I like some parts of their new songs, but I rarely find myself playing them. Lonesome Crowded West, Interstate 8, This is a Long Drive For Someone With Nothing to Think About, and random rarities are mostly what I listen to by Modest Mouse.
Keep It Like a Secret would probably be my pick for favorite BTS album too, but Randy Describes Eternity and I'd Hurt a Fly are two of my favorites and are from Perfect From Now On. The styles of the cds are a bit different, and the songs from Perfect From Now On that successfully capture that long guitary song that never bores are the best (and the ones I feel don't quite get there, well, maybe I just haven't tuned into them quite yet).
The one classical composer I need to check more of is Shostakovich. His Opus 67 is sheer brilliance, and the last movement sounds like the apocalypse.
I went through a Shostakovich/original HP 'phase'; now, I undervalue him.
I can't say I don't like his work prior to his imprisonment/brainwarrrshing. :/

Yes!
Do you listen to Sufjan Stevens and Death Cab without reeling within?!?!
I've never heard of Sufjan Stevens and I don't really know any Death Cab (though I know I've technically heard a few songs). When I go to listen to music, I usually listen to Modest Mouse and Built to Spill first and foremost, but Elliott Smith was one of the first musicians that I really liked. It took me some time to like his music, but after that I began upgrading my music tastes. I expect I will always like his music (and mm and bts :p). Even though he's dead and gone, I like to browse youtube sometimes and find a live performance I haven't seen. He never played big shows, so there's no singing along or screaming. I wish I could've seen him live.
Listened to a couple Death Cab songs just now. Maybe I could like them in the future, but right now I'm content to listen to what I've got. I can listen to music for a long time (listened to nearly only modest mouse for like...2 years) and I just got into Built to Spill. It's very possible I'm just being picky, because I sometimes don't like music right off the bat (but I gradually grow to appreciate it), but something turns me slightly off of them. Maybe it's just the band name or song titles. I'm petty. Right now I guess I'd rather listen to bts and mm than try a new band.
Depends. I was very into ska for a while. There are a bunch of bands out there, here are a couple I really liked w/samples: Reel Big Fish . They're very fratty. Here's another. I liked 'She has a girlfriend now', especially since I could play it for someone who that was ACTUALLY TRUE FOR. ... OK, that was really cruel at the time, but, uh, I had to do it. The Cat Empire [Since that song's a bit atypical, though I LOVE it, here's another if that one doesn't work for you.] Streetlight Manifesto [two songs there!] which has a bunch of offshoots, my favorite being Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, whose CD has sadly not yet been released. Grew out of Catch-22, who is great but not as good now that the guiding voice jumped ship [they originally did Keasbey Nights, among other songs - I own Permanent Revolution and while it's unmemorable it's decent].
I'm a Specials fan. Old but good.
The Toasters are fantastic, they're probably best known, though, for the Kablam theme song. [Which is a pretty good song either way.] Less than Jake is good. I first heard them on the PS1 game 'Street Sk8er', which could also be used as a music CD, and, looking back, had far more utility as such.
I'm forgetting others, but this should be a good start. RBF/Streetlight/LTJ are punk/ska, the Cat Empire's like ska/easy listening[?!?], and the Specials and Toasters are, I believe, 100% of the genre [or at least seem like it now].
Man, I've been listening to a lot of rap and electronic stuff, it's really nice to listen to this ska again. Thanks for asking the question, lol.

The Mad Caddies are AMAZING. Well, uh, were amazing. Again, first CD is great but uneven from what I've heard, second [<don't watch that video just listen to music raar] CD is great, third CD is great from what I've heard, fourth CD is a pile of that thing you don't want to hear [it was good initially but grew progressively worse the longer I listened to it, which is never a good sign ... but reviewers in general disagree with me]. They released a fifth CD but if I bought every CD I wanted I'd be very, very poor, and I don't illegally download things, so I can't comment on it. They're also ska/punk.
Anyways, I keep editing this, which is bad, so I'm going to try and flee to sleep.
