So I just got of the theater for this. I loved it. The movie itself was a departure from Star Trek Into Darkness because it came across to me as a lighter movie. And it just felt more Trekkie to me then either of its predecessors. I can't quite put my finger on how, but it felt more like I was watching a TV Plot that was too big for television rather than a movie, which is one of Star Trek's best movie feels.
The power of Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" destroying the swarm of Krall's ships was so ridiculous. Then again, Star Trek got away with time travel to get whales to save the world, so I'll give the power of music a pass. That fight felt more Fast and Furious than Star Trek (I wonder why!), but for some reason I can't bring myself to call it anything worse than ridiculous (and not as in stupid ridiculous either).
I will admit when I first checked rotten tomatoes the day before going to see it and saw a 93% critics rating for the movie, I wasn't sure whether to feel additionally hopeful of it being good, or be concerned that the critics would give such a movie that high of a rating (the critics and I will often disagree on certain types of movies :p).
Anyhow, went and saw it Thursday evening (like I'm going to wait to see a new star trek movie <.<)... And honestly, I loved it. As the previous poster stated it was definitely a good bit different than the last one, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. Its not perfect of course, but few movies are these days, I personally plan to see it at least once more in theaters. Anyhow, recommended by me for sure, and hopefully the rest of you that end up seeing it will enjoy it too :).
Loved every frame. Feels like Star Trek, down to the vaguely fake-looking rocks they're running around on. This is what summer blockbusters should be like: fun.

Yeah, it was ridiculawesome. And I think there's some subtle world-building in it. When Enterprise first encounters the swarm, it seems like an unstoppable force, and one wonders why no one else has ever used this combat doctrine. Then they discover its Achilles heel, and one is like, "Oh, that's why."

I loved that they used the same song that was used during that scene from the first reboot movie with a young kirk driving that car inevitably off the cliff and barely not falling over himself.
I thought this film started poorly, then built towards something, and then turned into a dreadful self parody. The film never felt like there was even slight jeopardy, the villians plan was incredibly poorly conceived (if your fleet of ships can get deep enough into a space station you can release some bio weapon you can just have already vented the atmosphere) and the way the alien fleet is defeated might well have been the planned plot of galaxy quest 2.
