Anyone going to see this tonight or this weekend?
I know its getting pretty bad reviews. This series has always been hit or miss but I typically enjoy them for the most part with one or two exception. I plan on checking it out tonight. Anyone else feel free to share your thoughts.
I liked it but didn't love it, it's nowhere near as good as Days of the Future Past. The Ten-year gap I thought was too long, they really didn't follow up anything from Days because of the gap. The movie felt more of a stand-alone movie then part of the trilogy. Micheal Fassbender and Evan Peters were excellent though!
Also the little clip at end-credits has me REALLY EXCITED.
Now firstly I will admit that I tend not to be as critical as some when it comes to how good or bad a movie is, I'm often willing to overlook potential minor flaws if I have enjoyed watching the movie in general.
In this case of X-men Apocalypse, honestly I enjoyed it. Was It perfect? Nope, but it was good enough that I don't mind seeing it multiple times.
I would describe apocalypse as agressively medium. The fight scenes are dull (mostly they involve either kind of bad acrobatic stunts or characters thrusting their hands and/or body parts at each other while attempting to emote. The film outstays its welcome by at least half an hour, which is interesting for a film where you could cut any five scenes in the middle of the film without an audience noticing they had been supposed to be there. The attention to reality is laughable even for a series as real-world averse as the xmen, and the actions of characters in the film have little to no relationship to what happened in the previous 2 films or what happened in X1 and 2.
Some specifics:
the various characters constantly forgot their powers, especially apocalypse. He's supposed to be some unstopable badass but most does nothing except have oscar isaac not be able to have emotions because of the frankly B grade prosthetics. In the final fight he should have been able to just sink the heroes into whatever material was available - he destroys all of cairo in under a minute - but apparently forgets. But that's ok, because Magneto ALSO forgets that as well as through stuff that has no effect, he can blast at apocalypse from the ground under him - you know, the thing he is trying to do to destroy the world.
Their is an utter lack of tension in the film - the apparently climatic scenes just had no feeling to them, possibly because very few of the characters have had an arc. Or dialogue of note.
The whole wolverine thing is totally unnecessary, and I wish they had totally cut that whole 'captured by stryker' scene from the film. It did nothing of any real note. Yes, you need an excuse for Jean et al to be at the final fight but...it felt super forced.
Quicksilver was the only fun thing in the film, but his big scene is extremely similar to the scene in DoFP, just not as well executed.
And other than quicksilver vs apocalypse, the fight scenes are just lifeless, bloodless nothings. As are the non-fight scenes. It's as if every character is that annoying plot device character who just exists to serve the story of the protaganist but is very 2d themselves, only the film forgot to include a protag.
I agree the movie was okay, not good not bad, just okay. Still worth the discounted ticket price I got. The time jump between movies is starting to get a bit odd though since several of the actors from first class still look the exact same twenty years later. The shape-shifter gets a pass but as for everyone else shame on fox for not at least attempting to make havoc look older than a teenager when he should be in his late thirties and the same for magneto, Beast, and professor X. It could be argued that Fassbender now looks the appropriate age for his character and didn't look young enough in the first movie, It never sat well for me in first class that he was supposed to be a similar age to Charles when there is clearly a 10 to 15 year age gap there which is super weird considering the two actors are only 2 years apart. And the age thing is only going to get worse considering the next movie is set an additional ten years later.
The quicksilver scene elevated the whole movie to an acceptable level. If it didn't have that scene or if it wasn't as awesome as it was I would have thought different of the movie as a whole. The whole side quest at Striker's compound could have been cut with nothing lost to the movie. As much as I love Hugh Jackman wolverine didn't need to be in this movie and I can't help but feel like the 15-20 minutes spent there could have been better spent getting to know some of the less developed characters. Jubilee is once again in the movie but does basically nothing which is disappointing.
I love the new costumes they all get at the end, its finally something like the comics. It is a bit disappointing that they are only used in the final shot and we don't get to see them in action yet.

That's a good point about Havoc and characters who have been in all three movies. I forgot that it's been 20 years of timeline between the trilogy.
it's particularly notable for Havoc. He should be over 40 in this film (He's 20 early 20s in the first film). Plus I'm pretty sure he mentions his brother, scott, in the first film, which is odd given scott is clearly in highschool in this film and this unlikely to have been alive at the time of the cuban missile crisis.

To be fair this is an issue in the comics as well. Most of comics featuring Apocalypse end with him being defeated in an unsatisfactory way after the comic authors have built him up to be an unstoppable god like figure.
I also want to know how much of the entire world did Magneto destroy before he flipped back to good just at the end. It showed him causing widespread destruction on several continents, how much civilization is even left. Also how the hell is the cold war going to play out with each countries nuclear arsenal eliminated? I know they could build more but you can't tell me the next ten years of world history is going to play out the same after that. We better get at least a line in the next one addressing the cold war resolution or lack there of.
I wasn't a huge fan of X-Men Apocalypse. It's not awful, but it was your run-of-the-mill disaster porn flick.
Apocalypse was wasted. He is one of the X-Men's biggest and baddest villains and Fox used him up too quick. It's going to be very hard for Mr. Sinister to fill the void left behind by Apocalypse. Sure Sinister is really nasty and evil, but he doesn't carry quite the same weight and gravitas that Apocalypse has.
I also don't like how Fox is skipping ahead a decade with every movie that's come out. It's leading to a very convoluted timeline where many of the main characters look like they haven't aged one bit despite so many years going by. And now the next X-Men movie is supposed to take place in the 90s. Are the characters going to magically not age again when that happens?
The final battle left little to be desired. The destruction in this movie puts Man of Steel and Age of Ultron to shame. How is there no mention after the fact that Cairo was basically wiped off the map? Apocalypse didn't come across as very menacing as his power level was clearly downgraded then compared to earlier in the movie.
Also... did anyone else feel like the CGI on Psylocke's psi-blade felt off?
I thought it was bad, and I agree with every issue Verbal identified above. I was discussing with my wife afterward whether some major scrip revision has been forced through, or if poor initial consumer testing had forced a major and ultimately detrimental re-edit before the film had been released.
Final vent: the number of stupid scenes of apocalypse just standing, hanging around with his horsemen (in basements, on jagged rocks, etc) was just ridiculous.
Edit: agreed above that the consiquenceless violence of the movie, especially at the end, contributed to an incredibly shallow resolution. Magneto (and pretty much anyone associated with Apocalypse) were likely mass murderers on an unprecedented level!!! nonchalantly: "See you later Charles. Pip-pip, cheerio, and all of that!" ~ exit Magneto from the end of the film...

I think instead of a coldwar countries may band together for the sentinel program, and rebuilding of the world as we do not know how much is destroyed. With Stryker working with a sinister sort of fellow....
The only conclusion I can think of about Apocalypse and the last fight is that he didn't want to kill the X-men. That once he took control of Charles and did the transfusion, he would mind control them into doing his bidding. I mean to me he was still super powerful. He didn't expect Super powered Magneto and super powered Storm to switch sides last minute. I think some people are underestimating how Strong Xavier's mind is and the fact Apoc whooped his butt so easily show's how powerful he is. Not to mention how much power he had to use to build his bubble to block super charged Magneto while defeating Charles. The fact it took Super charged Magneto, Super Charged Storm, ole one eye, and Phoenix Jean to break him should speak of how powerful he is.

however...
Let's count how many powers he forgets he has in this sequence.
Firstly, he could just teleport away. When phoenix starts melting his face, he could just leave and re-plan. It's not like Charles is the only telepath in the world.
He could also *trivially* kill them all. You saw when he built the pyramid that he could build a miles-high structure in under a minute - once he decided the xmen were a threat they should have all been buried neck deep in stone - let's remember, he doesn't even have to kill them to do this, ala the thug at the beginning who is clearly alive for at least a while. bury them in stone, take charle's body, boom, world domination.
He could kill them all with animated sand, like three of the thugs chasing storm. He's strong enough to just punch them to death. He could do whatever the hell he does when he is woken up at the beginning of the film where he blast several thousand tons of rock to powder with weird purple energy.
Yes, holding off the whole team took power but he's displayed vastly, vastly more power than that.
Oh, plus he has wolverine or near wolverine level regenerative ability. He didn't need that fire defence against magneto, he could likely just tank it while killing people.

But who says he wants to actually kill them? Like I said he could have easily killed them, but he showed he didn't want to kill them. He didn't snap Ravens neck, he didn't send Summers into the ground. Just two instances where he could have easily killed them. He did at the end try to teleport away he had the purple bubble pop but storms electricity trumped it. Apocalypse's greatest downfall ironically was super-charging his horsemen.
I overall enjoyed the movie for what it was - an action movie. It breaks down a little when you think too hard about it, but there are few action movies that don't. I also disagree that there wasn't much tension, I definitely felt quite a bit a the climax.
My only real complaint was that they put in Jubilee and then let her do literally nothing of note. Like, she's in the throwaway mall scene with Jean/Cyclops/Nightcrawler, but then as soon as the real action starts happening, she gets separated from the three of them inexplicably and then stops mattering. I'm pretty sure they never even say the word "Jubilee", let alone let her use her powers.
Thoughts continued in spoiler tag:
I agree that the Stryker Base/Weapon X scene was really unnecessary - they could have easily bridged the groups working there to Xavier and Apocalypse with minimal effort without that scene. We didn't really need yet another Wolverine cameo, especially since it plays out fairly similarly to Origins. I mean, I guess they're just straight pretending Origins didn't happen, which I'm honestly okay with, but this felt tacked on.
I was hoping we'd see Jubilee do something in a midcredits scene, but I guess they only use those in X-men to set up their upcoming movies and not for "Schwarma" scenes like the MCU does. Oh well.

I love how the guy got Nahiried by Apocalypse. The actors not aging is a problem. They've had this problem since Origins.
Apocalypse ended up being a rather cookie-cutter villain, but I'm used to it by now. My only major issue is Psylocke's costume. I'm really sick or women being paraded around half naked for no reason. A leotard is not an acceptable battle costume.

That sucks for Olivia Munn too, being her first really big movie that I've seen her in. I've always like her stuff on G4 and elsewhere and I feel like she got a bit shafted in her role here.
Wolverine and Mystique get a pass on the aging thing because there powers keep them looking the same. I feel like they should have put some makeup on the others or something, except Fassbender (Magneto is finally the age Fassbender looks lol) And they better have cyclopes and beast hit the gym before the next one because they are way to scrawny for the characters they are supposed to be.

They certainly have the technology to do it. Hell, these days, they don't even need to use prosthetics. They could just do it digitally in post-production.

I like The Avengers, but there was always something more badass about the X-Men. They should give characters other than Wolverine their own movies. Storm would be a good start.
