Last time I checked eBay for singles none of them contained listings for the starter deck exclusives except for the hi-tech foil main personalities and masteries. I'm trying to complete my playset of Orange Quick Dodge's and Red Energy Defensive Stance's for my Orange Goku and Red Gohan decks yet nobody in my area has any extras of them.

Yea, same in my area. All of it seems to be based on extremely low supply regarding starter decks.
There are two types of starters that will have different starter only cards in them. Thus, for a full playset in circulation of a local trading area, there must have been at least 6 starter decks opened. Essentially the way these starter deck exclusives work, there has to have been a ton of starter decks actually opened, and from what I'm hearing and experiencing in my local area, there just aren't enough starter decks available.
Yeah I'm in this as a store owner, so I know of some of the mess. I don't know how tradable the cards are, some of them seem like they'd be really hard to get though. Especially the ultra rares. I'd expect in a few months the starter cards will be a lot better, and the game can start growing.
That's the hope. One of the issues I'm seeing is tradeability. Starter deck cards aren't being traded because they're too rare to trade right now and Ultra rares probably won't be traded because they are or will be huge staples in a wide variety of decks and people want to hang onto theirs.
It's especially annoying about most of the Ultras being staples, combined with their low pull rate.
Here's another breakdown of the official rule variations for Panini Z compared to Score Z -
All Main Personality Sets have 4 levels. There are no personalities without a level 4 and there are no level 5's.
All decks must include a Mastery card. There is no more declaration of Tokui-Waza, nor can you run Freestyle.
All decks must be exactly 60 cards while your MP and Mastery don't count toward your deck size in terms of deck construction.
Icons have been added to clarify when a card can be used. Attacks have a sword icon, blocks have a shield, "use when needed" effects have an exclamation point, and constant combat powers have an infinity symbol.
Named cards can only be played in decks that match the name of your MP as they are no longer limited to 4 copies per deck. This change was made in order to give personalities a more modular and distinct feel to them.
Non-Combat cards are no longer a card type. Drills are their own card type instead of being a sub-set of Non-Combat cards, and tradtionally activated Non-Combat cards are now called Setups.
Combat cards are now called Event cards in order to further differentiate them from Physical Combat and Energy Combat cards.
Allies are now their own card type. Not only does this prevent MP Powers from being bogged down by their potential use as an Ally, but it also has led to the creation of uniquely assistive effects. For example, fans of City in Turmoil may be happy to see a similar effect return in the form of an Ally Power. Constant Powers on Allies such as Nappa are always in effect now, even if your MP is more than one stage above zero. Allies can still use attacks or blocks when you are one or less stage above zero, and they can still have damage redirected to them. An Ally, however, is never in control of combat unless it is making an action. Due to this, you can no longer calculate base damage against the power level of an Ally. You can also put Allies into play regardless of the name of your opponent’s MP or Allies.
Once you have all seven Dragon Balls in play, you win immediately. You no longer need to wait If you capture the final Dragon Ball.
Most Powerful Personality Victory is now achieved by reaching 5 anger while on level 4. This has proven to be a lot more fun, as your devastating powers on level 4 can actually be utilized.
There is no more double power rule. With proper design of the new MPs, it was deemed unnecessary. There are also no more Final Physical Attacks. The PAT is now known as the “Attack Table” or “AT” and for balance purposes, it now ends at F. Things like the “active player” and “attacker attacks”/”defender defends” phases have been eliminated. Combat is now simply played out by an alternation of Actions (which are things like using a Power, playing an attack or block, etc).
Cards with their names in gold are exact reprints of the Score Z version, meaning that you can run the old versions in tournament legal decks.

This looks like it could be fun, but I can't justify getting in on it. Ultras are rare enough that they're eBaying at ~$100 each, and that's too much for a card which you'll need three of, in a game that may not last. It's shame too, I'd have liked to be able to play a version of this game that lets you actually roll with the full Ginyu Force.

Yea, the Ultra rare issue I didn't like and it's a lesson unlearned from the original game. Thankfully, with how fresh the game is, my meta isn't so competitive as to require the ultras. Regardless, Panini has done an amateur job at getting product to stores and the starter decks are unplayable out of the box, yet have many of the staples required, which doesn't rest well for the long or even short term survival of this game.
It's a very fun game and if you can get a playable deck without all of the high value rares, I recommend it if people play in your area. I've been having fun with even an orange deck with only a few rares and no ultras. Balance is a huge issue, but any deck that can pump out chain energy attacks WILL be able to win. Especially any style of the Ginyu Force or Namekian Rejuv.
I played the original game for almost its entire run, and I've been following this one from announcement with great interest.
There are a few things that have me very skeptical as to this games future and competitive viability.
The biggest issue is how they chose to handle ultra rares.
Score kept ultra rare's incredibly scarce, but at the same time they generally made the ultra rares good or interesting, but not amazing and necessary.
Panini made ultra rare's more common, but STILL is keeping them far too scarce, and started off by including two likely staples as ultra rares.
I imagine when they do start up events, there will have to be two formats, one that's open to newer players, using only the new cards, and one that's open to older players, letting them use the old cards as well.
How will this game work out for a competitive scene based around the new cards when you'll need $300 into your deck just for three cards? Other formerly common/uncommon staples have been reprinted at rare, so their price will rise as well.
Ultra rare's needed to go the way of mythics in magic, and become far more common if they were going to be cards people needed, otherwise they needed to go away altogether. They were cool to get in the old game, but they were really one of the worst parts about it as well. Simply far too scarce.
Perhaps it was a mistake to relaunch this game as a Trading Card Game when it might have been better off as a Living Card Game where you end up buying 1-2 boxes of a set and have everything you need to play instead of having to drop tons of money on booster packs, starters, and singles only to be shorthanded when it seems like Panini America's wasting the opportunity of a long lasting game to make a quick buck on capitalizing the Dragon Ball franchise.
I don't like the idea of shelling out $864 a playset on functional reprints of Trunks Energy Sphere that's split between Heroes and Villains which is statistically how much it would cost to pull them in booster packs. That's not even including the other Ultra Rares you would end up pulling instead of Heroic Energy Sphere and Villainous Energy Sphere which would be about $2600, buying singles on eBay isn't going to be very cheap either. The Starter Deck Exclusives are just as scarce as the Ultras are and that's not a good thing.

If this were done in a living CCG setup I could guarantee I would have jumped right in. It would have been easier for me to get some of my friends in to the game as well, which with the current state looks like it would be nearly impossible.
I think it was a mistake in how many barriers it created from the first set and it is starting to look like a cash grab, especially with the starters.
New people can't get into this game because for a person to have a competitive deck, they need many of the starter deck only cards. If a person wanted a playset of their on-styled starter deck only cards by buying into this game, they would need at least 6 starters. The fact that 1 starter does not give a functioning deck is horrible for the barrier. You need 60+ dollars of product
Regarding the Ultra Rares. The spheres are going to be bad for the long term of the game if they're not reprinted in the next few sets at lower rarity the more cards they counter. Luckily at this point though, they're not really necessary. With 60 card limits, nobody can risk going into combat with a possible dead card like that. If you want any event card, it's Stare Down or Confrontation. Other than that, you're wanting an energy attack or energy block.
Having smaller decks definitely makes the spheres less important, but all it takes is some loose game design where having a sphere or not is game breaking and, like, the fact that they are not only ultra's but villain/hero only is terrible.
This is literally the opposite of what needed to happen, literally.
I'm pretty sure that without reprints, more common reprints, the sphere's are only going to become a greater problem as as sets come out and expand the deck options.

Ugg.
Yep, the fact that not only are ultras hard to get (One of them is definitely a staple and the spheres are dependent upon card pool...which definitely holds weight in future sets), but also the fact that starter only cards are ridiculous to get a hold of now as well.
This game is on its first set and it has huge and costly barriers. I'm fine, but the position this game is in makes me think it can't expand because the barriers and even future barriers are so intimidating to anybody trying to get in. Making ultras much more common was the first step in what needed to happen. The game is not being managed well.
I'd wait until after Organized Play is established before we decide as to whether or not If the game is being managed well. We don't even know If it will have the same player turnout for sanctioned tournaments like it did back in the height of Score Z's popularity from 1999-2003 so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. If anything Panini Z should be able to succeed where GT, Re-Z, and Bandai Z failed upon although I do agree that the Energy Sphere's will be a problem for the long term outlook of the game unless they get reprinted as easy to access tournament promos similar to Time Is A Warrior's Tool and Goku's Kamehameha instead of being as hard to obtain as the championship promos from Score Z and GT.

You know, maybe the ultras aren't as bad as I thought. Maybe they left them as rare as they did so they can also use them as cheap prize support for tournaments. That would reduce the price point a bit, and by virtue of the cards being in sets, the problem of tourney promos being impossible to obtain is eliminated. Granted that's all wishful thinking, but it worked for Chaotic until 4kids decided to screw the pooch.
Also, if starter decks came in cases of 6 instead of 10, guaranteed to be one of each, that would be super. There are 6 characters, each always comes with the same mastery and the same version of the deck, so buying a box would get you a playset of everything in the starter box without duplicates. Since there are 10, it stands to reason that they're inserted randomly, because of print runs. Does anyone know if that means it's possible to purchase a case of starters and NOT get one of the main personalities? Because that would be... sub-optimal.
I'm guessing that the starter exclusive contents are equitably distributed at 20 cards per style? That would make sense given the fact that there's two unique decks, and they're all singletons. Which means this also could have been fixed by just including a playset of a given style, WITH that style, so players get an actual playable deck when they buy a starter.
I suppose all this really shows is that Panini really is, first and foremost, a trading card company. Everything about this distribution seems optimized from a perspective related to leveraging the collecting aspect, with little regard for the playing aspect. the thing is, with as quickly as it seems the inventory has sold, I don't think they'll be motivated to correct that...
By the way, Toywiz the only online store I've seen that's actually stocking singles for this game outside of eBay, AND they're selling starter deck singles. Granted, you'll be paying way more than the cost of the starter if you want to 100% everything, but the fact that it exists is a small triumph for this game.

I overheard that tournament organizers are starting to ban Ginyu and Namekian Style decks from being played with the possibility of Saiyan Empowered Mastery receiving unofficial errata months before Organized Play is established by Panini America. If this turns out to be true then why are the tournament organizers calling the shots instead of Panini America on this ordeal? The game's only been out for 2 months and people are banning decks in unofficial tournaments instead of issuing errata's on broken cards which should be Panini America's call to make instead of the tournament organizers running the events and giving out participation promos. While I understand that the organizers want the metagame to be balanced in their community, banning competitive decks is the wrong way to go about it.
While Namekian Piccolo/Gohan and Ginyu are tier 1 right now in the current meta they're not impossible to beat considering what we have in the game's current card pool to deal with them. Devastating Blow should be a staple in every deck that needs an answer against Namekian let alone Blue Defensive Effect If you're running Blue which prevents your opponent from gaining anger, Orange has Orange Stare Down to deal with Ginyu, Orange Empowered Drill to deal with Namekian (although unless you have Orange Focusing Drill out it will get destroyed or banished ASAP), Red has Red Energy Blast to deal with Ginyu alongside Red Defensive Stance to deal with Namekian, while Black has Black Command and Black Interceptor Barrage for against Namekian while Black Side Thrust is great for destroying your opponent's Ginyu Allies. The list goes on as there's more counters that other Martial Arts Styles have right now that should help ease the matchup against Namekian and Ginyu.
I've also found that Visiting the Past is much more versatile than Battle Pausing since it enables you to get ANY card from your discard pile when entering combat instead of from the top 2 cards of your discard pile with Battle Pausing plus it has the nasty drawback of enabling your opponent to perform more energy attacks against you from gaining 5 power stages compared to Visiting the Past where you place a card from your hand at the bottom of your Life Deck If you have 3 or more cards in hand. If anything Visiting the Past should be a staple in every deck due to it's power of getting back Time Is A Warrior's Tool from your discard pile let alone Heroic Energy Sphere or Villainous Energy Sphere If you're able to shell out the money for them, it's just THAT good. So far these are the best decks in the current meta:

Visiting the past is amazing as well as a deterrent from others entering combat on you.
On the unofficial banning far I've heard of one Card Shop that is following through with banning Ginyu and Namekian. To me it's a move that won't be well for the game if Panini doesn't give support to their game.
If they've been paying attention, the next set should be able to clear this up by buffing Saiyan and Red styles. I don't agree with the banning of Ginyu or Namekian yet, but Namekian Mastery is errata worthy and Ginyu's Level 1 secondary effect should have been a hit effect. Namekian is broken because of its matchups being stellar across the board, and another set should bring balance, but it seems this game keeps on taking hit after hit to its momentum so I don't see the second set being popular if Panini keeps quiet.
