I didn't have a chance to read through a lot of the old thread. What's this about?
Also out of curiosity, do you all tend to only buy the individual cards you want out of new sets for EDH decks or do you buy booster packs/boxes as well? I've been doing both so far since I'm just getting into MTG in general but was wondering how people who have been playing for a longer time go about it.
We're going to do a secret santa thing with cool magic cards (under $5) around christmas time. Clan members only. (if you want to be a clan member though, you can always ask to join).
For EDH decks specifically, I would buy the singles. Unless the set is absolutely FULL of money cards you need, just stick to buying individually. If you are looking for cards to support other formats as well, you can always buy packs and have fun. I have a mix between buying singles/trading and buying packs.

The Secret Santa is simply: clan members who want to partecipate pick a common wishlist and publish on this thread. Then everyone chose an user that partecipate and send him one of the cards on the wishlist, or contact him for private infos/what he want. Just this.
About your second question, when i was still buying cards, most of the time if i need something new i wait for the draft season to pass, then if i couldn't pick one, i just buy it.
Then everyone chose an user that partecipate and send him one of the cards on the wishlist,
This actually brings up a good point: How do we know who already has their secret santa? I suppose Bursama can just create a random list and then PM everyone with the person they're sending a gift to, while each person creates a wishlist/mailing address post so that the secret santa can reference it. You had that in mind, right Bursama?
Also, going to create a wishlist soon, just because.

Depends on what I'm looking for. Generally, I like to get a fat-pack (a Tubby?) for each set because I like having a box to store stuff in. If the set is really interesting, I'll get a box and have a draft with a few friends. Usually, I buy singles because that's the only sure-fire way to get what you want. That being said, I'm bad at trading.

I'm under the assumption that there are a few people who aren't going to participate. If that is the case, they could be the assigner. We'll figure something out, we have 3 months.

I buy singles for specifics, and play draft on Friday nights when I can for and influx of new things. This also allows me time to trade with shop folk. That's how I got Doubling Season, Savannah, Plateau and Foil Keiga, the Tide Star recently. Local trades can net you some of the best deals, especially at my local shop where people tend to be more interested in the standard legal stuff than their old Rares and other format staples.
I was excited to get those Duals, he was happier to acquire some Modern staples I had. Was good times for all.

I usually stick to buying singles. It's probably the most cost-effective way of getting cards I want/need. I'll buy packs, on occasion. Sometimes I'll buy a box, but that's pretty rare. I was doing a sealed league, for a while, but couldn't sustain it, along with my other spending.

I most of the time buy singles, but I also "buy" boosters in form of draft/prerelease.

Yeah, I was thinking something like that. Since this whole thing requires an organiser, I can take care of that part. I'll create a list with all the participants so that everyone sends one and receives one gift. If we were let to members choose who they'd send to, someone might get several gifts and someone none...
Also, I'd suggest that when we have organised the list and everything, everyone would send their shipping address to me, and I'll give them to the person send you the gift. This helps to keep everyone's Santa as a shadow... at least until they get the gift.

I also only buy singles... It can actually be really hard, though, since EDH (for me) is about getting random -- but good! -- old cards, which can be notoriously hard to find. My Talrand deck hit the back-burner hard for 2 months because I couldn't find an Opposition ANYWHERE! XP I didn't want to order something so cheap from online and it wasn't worth an online trade either.. so yeah.
Anyways, for Secret Santa: There's gonna have to be a way to discretely give addresses, too. It probably isn't a good idea to post such personal information publically.. I'm really not worried about anyone coming to Japan to knock on my door or try to do anything funny, but it's still something we shouldn't be doing without a good amount of thought first.
I suggest that the organizer(s) have two responsibilities: 1) assign the Secret Santas for each person, and 2) distribute the addresses to the parties concerned. Basically, sending a PM with "Your Secret Santa is __________. Please send to this address: _______." Or some such thing.
I suggest also that we have 2 organizers. There's a few reasons for this. First, it's good to double-check little details, especially when personal information is being sent out. Second, two heads are better than one, as they say. In this case, one person might be able to figure out a good method for Santa assignments that the other wouldn't have, especially in the case of an odd number of participants. And especially given that international post will be involved. Third, if worst comes to worst, the organizers can at least send to each other (as something of a sacrifice) to ensure that the mystery of the Santas for the rest of the clan be preserved.
Are there any volunteers for organizers? (I certainly don't mind doing it, but we'll see.)
Also out of curiosity, do you all tend to only buy the individual cards you want out of new sets for EDH decks or do you buy booster packs/boxes as well?
I buy one b. box of each new set (trying to get a different language every time, of course :D). The rest is singles. I must admit I'm addicted to buying singles and often buy stuff I don't really need and won't even use. The upside is that cards are a lot easier to resell than, say, shoes. I almost never draft because drafts usually coincide with Constructed tournaments which I prefer.

I buy singles, but I will buy sealed product occasionally. I buy most duel decks and I will buy the 5 commander precons.
If Bursama is the organizer, does that make you Saint Nicol Bolas?
Comes with being the Clan Rep.
This just adds to my titles.

Also, I'm fine with madhatter (you got a nick name?) being our second organizer. Four eyes are better than two.
(Besides, this way I can be sure that I'll a postcard from Japan!)

And you can call me Hatter, I guess. The whole insanity by mercury poisoning isn't really my thing; I just think that the idea of being stuck in time (especially at teatime) is pretty interesting... and my friend was the March Hare, so we kinda matched for awhile.
You'll definitely be getting a sweet postcard. I'll try not to get one of Mt. Fuji, inescapable though they are..
Anywho! Before we can figure out who's whose Santa, we gotta get a count of the participants. So:
[If you're interested in participating in the Clan Secret Santa, please post to the thread!]
Also, send a PM to both me and Bursama with your address (which will be kept confidential and given only to your Secret Santa). Do NOT post your address on the thread.
Also, let us know if you don't mind international shipping; we have quite the international clan, but with some forethought and planning, everyone can get a present for Christmas. Yes, even you Little Timmy ;P
One more thing: the notification deadline is November 1, 2013. This means that we must receive your info and commitment to participation by then. Also, that will be the final day for participants to post their wishlists (and PM a copy to Bur and me). That way, Santas can begin their planning early, if necessary.
And one MORE thing: try to keep wishlists to no more than 15 cards (MAX!). Choices are good, but inundating your poor Santa with half a deck is not T_T;
Also, I just decided to remind that as you other people who live EU should know, shipping withing EU has no extra costs (= It costs as much to send it to your neighbor as it would to send it to someone living on the other side of the EU), so keep that in mind. (If someone in EU doesn't want to send something to NA due shipping costs, remember what I said.)

Thank you all for the feedback on buying and trading cards, much appreciated. On a related note, don't stay up for 36 hours from working and then start shopping online, you'll probably end up with a booster box purchase....
Also, if it's good with all of you it would be great to join the clan!
I promise not to cause trouble.... okay that's a lie, just not too much trouble. ...

If you're not making trouble, you're doing it wrong. ;P
Also, just out of curiosity, what kind of deck boxes do you guys use for you EDH-decks?
I've recently gotten seriously into the Dragon Shield boxes. So far I've got green (Karador), purple (Phelddagrif), orange (Tajic), blue (Kira), black (Anowon), yellow (Rune-Tail), pink (Horobi) and red (Maraxus). And matching sleeves, of course, except for Tajic who has his own sleeves. In addition, my main German HL resides in a silver box. That means I'm still missing gold, clear, white and brown.
Also, just out of curiosity, what kind of deck boxes do you guys use for you EDH-decks?
I use simple white long boxes (800 count?). The plan was to have one for single colors, one for Allied colors, enemy colors, wedge and shard. The only problem with that is it takes me so long to build a deck, then they usually don't stick around long enough to get assigned a box.
Also, just out of curiosity, what kind of deck boxes do you guys use for you EDH-decks?
I have a couple old fat pack boxes that I tote my decks around in. I also do the decks by sleeve color thing. Blue is Pristaxcontrombmodruu, Red is Norin, Purple is my Lazav and Tajic will be pink because he's cute and cuddly.
Also, I know I'm not in the clan, but I'd really like to participate in this Secret Santa thing. I'd rather not ship international, though.
