I am the Wizard of Id, "Wizard" or "Id" for short usually.
I played magic from about legends till the Urza's Block and then a brief stint in 10th edition. Just came back about 3 months ago and have been doing a lot of reading and research and found out about EDH, which is probably the coolest mtg format that's ever happened.
I am interested in EDH primarily, and have downloaded cockatrice. My handle on there is also Wizard of Id.
Its, erm.. Interesting.. I think that having voice comms would be better for advanced rules discussions or complicated plays, and I do have a free mumble server (that I own) if any ones interested.
I'm looking forward to some good games with you guys that can help me get a better handle on the rules updates and magic in general.

Hi Id! I don't play online, but I'm sure that the many members of the clan who do would be more than willing to play with you. And don't worry, rules are really easy. The main thing to remember is the stuff about priority (APNAP= Active player --> Non-active player [starting from left and working its way around the table]). It's mostly a timing thing, but it's worth remembering.
I fancy myself something of a rules "lawyer" (though I don't like to weasel), so if you have any general questions, particularly about multi-player rules, you can shoot them my way if everyone else is stumped... though with all the resources (read: Internet) available, I'm sure you'll all find the solution out there somewhere.
Anywho... as for the member introduction thing, how about this format? (Keep in mind any answer is voluntary, and no one must complete this if s/he doesn't want to.) Any elaboration is always welcome!

My favourite card is: Snapcaster Mage... just so much versatility...
My favourite set/block is: Urza's Saga (the story behind the set is pretty fantastic! I recommend it: Planeswalker to Time Streams). Plus, there's some really great cards in the set. I also liked Zendikar.
My favourite effect or strategy is: Stax (both tax and sac) and "forever" exile effects (like StP and PtE)
My dream card would: kill all the Green cards in a player's deck (it's a dream, OK?! XD)
My planeswalker BFF is: Gideon (he's just such a bamf :P). Or Tamiyo; she's pretty fly.
If I could live on a land card, it would be: The Tolarian Academy (so much good fluff about that card!). Or Vesuva.. the art is sooooo awesome!
If I could add any one card to the banlist, it would be: hmm.. there's nothing I'm particularly miffed about or that my decks can't handle, but I'd probably like to see Natural Order or Green Primordial go down... just because they're overused Green search Yes, I can be very petty.

The best thing (to me) about EDH is: The creative possibilities!! You can build anything!

Do I play in EDH tourneys?: Used to, but they all had "no MLD" and "no infinite" rules that hinder how I like to play

I build my EDH decks by: Selecting a general, determining what strategy the general is "good at", and compiling cards that fit that strategy. Alternatively, I'll select a strategy I want to play, build a deck around that strategy, and select a general who at least doesn't hinder the strategy (if a perfectly suitable general is unavailable).

My (primary) playgroup consists of people: IDK... one? Most of the time, I just go to the shop for playing but outside of that, I mostly play with my best MtG friend.
Do I play in EDH tourneys? Never heard of one. Despite being an avid tournament player, that doesn't sound like a concept I'm sad to have missed.
Do I play other MtG formats? Standard, Modern, Legacy, Highlander... pretty much all major Constructed formats except Vintage. With some friends of mine, we also have a few formats of our own.
I build my EDH decks by: 1) Choose a general. The choice criteria can be anything from wanting to try a mechanic to enjoying the card's art (or having come up with a name for a deck that just absolutely needs to be built, no matter what). 2) Decide whether the deck is going to try to be good, flavorful or just silly. 3) Buy a ton of new cards online. 4) Build the deck. 5) Realize the deck is crap at being good/flavorful/silly/all of the above. 6) Dismantle the deck before playing a single game with it.
Alias/Name: Scypher. I got the name from a character I played in my World of Warcraft days and the name kind of stuck. Often times I try to remake her in D&D/Pathfinder, which little success.
My favourite card type is: Enchantment or Artifact.

The best thing (to me) about EDH is: The games last longer than any other format. If one player pulls ahead, everyone else beats them back down. Victories are usally out of blue and memorable.
I build my EDH decks by (please be brief): Picking a color, then a general, then building around that general. Sometimes I assign a personally to my general and go from there. Maralen is the queen and doesn't attack, Sigarda hates artifacts (that deck has no artifacts in it).
My favourite set/block is: Zendikar/Kamigawa for flavor/atmosphere. As a single set: Coldsnap.
My favourite effect or strategy is: WAY too many to list. Okay, I guess using Volrath's Stronghold in response to your own Grim Backwoods... (Happens at times in my Sisters-EDH)

The best thing (to me) about EDH is: Variety is the spice of life. I love the fact that the game is slower and allows for cool interactions and plays. Cards that have been forgotten to time can effectively be used for a neat combo. I am also a bit of a magpie, so tricking out a deck with cool cards is always fun.

A for-instance would be the other day I was playing a casual red deck on cockatrice (the only 60 card deck I could remember) and I went to attack with a raging goblin. Dude decides to not block and take the damage, to which I respond with a Blood Lust. He was like "I don't think you can do that". Can you no longer bust someone with a giant growth or a blood lust anymore?

That move was perfectly legal, I just think he might have been confused by the wording of the old card. You can still giant growth after they choose not to block.

The contest is Design-Your-Own-Commander-Precon. The first round consists of just making the mythic rare legend designed to be the commander of the deck. Obviously it must include all of the deck's colors.

I know I'm a little late responding (I'm studying in Japan right now, so the time zones are a little wonky), but Shorty is right: your opponent is wrong. Blood Lust essentially makes your creature a X+4/1 no matter what.

I build my EDH decks by (please be brief): I just try to build around the commander and include as much goodstuff as possible.

I find this counterintuitive since GB was an extremely oppressive deck in his life time getting up there with hermit druid, if you banned druid and unbanned GB you would have an even stronger combo deck in your meta.
So we still got few days to tweak our commanders. Nice.
Also, on unrelated note: I began my Japanese studies today! One year's worth of Japanese and I'm really excited. Sad part is that it is the only course available at our University for those who aren't majoring in Japanese Culture.

Gorgeous view of the oceans, living in a sunlight-filled castle, friendly competitions abound, stables full of all kinds of amazing animals just a few flights of stairs away, and most important of all, peace. I wouldn't want to live in a war-torn area.

There is absolutely no way for this card to be used fairly without being a complete stinker, and it's the center of a combo that's incredibly fast and difficult to disrupt. Sylvan Primordial is close--it's almost as bad as Sundering Titan.
If I could remove any one card from the banlist, it would be: I personally think nothing needs to come off the banlist. If I absolutely had to pick one card, it would be Tolarian Academy. I picked one up specifically for Commander, then it got banned a year later.
The best thing (to me) about EDH is: You don't have to worry about being competitive. The way I see Commander, if everyone doesn't have fun, no one wins. Silliness is encouraged, unlike in other formats.

Do I play in EDH tourneys?: No. I feel putting prizes on the line ruins what makes the format fun.

I build my EDH decks by (please be brief): Writing a short backstory of an original character to port to the MTG world, finding a commander that is closest to what the character is like. and build around it.

If I could add any one card to the banlist, it would be: Hermit Druid. There is absolutely no way for this card to be used fairly without being a complete stinker, and it's the center of a combo that's incredibly fast and difficult to disrupt.
It is commonly used as an efficient dredge card. In the hermit druid scion combo deck it is absurdly broken, but otherwise it really isn't unfair.

I think balance would be a nice unban, limited resources is much too strong but Balance is a nice white spell, sure it's super aggressively costed, but the ability to counteract ramp is great and it's a bit less hateful than total mld that people hate.
Also I think gift's ungiven would be a sweet unban.

My (primary) playgroup consists of people: IDK... one? Most of the time, I just go to the shop for playing but outside of that, I mostly play with my best MtG friend.
Do I play in EDH tourneys? Never heard of one. Despite being an avid tournament player, that doesn't sound like a concept I'm sad to have missed.
Do I play other MtG formats? Standard, Modern, Legacy, Highlander... pretty much all major Constructed formats except Vintage. With some friends of mine, we also have a few formats of our own.
I build my EDH decks by: 1) Choose a general. The choice criteria can be anything from wanting to try a mechanic to enjoying the card's art (or having come up with a name for a deck that just absolutely needs to be built, no matter what). 2) Decide whether the deck is going to try to be good, flavorful or just silly. 3) Buy a ton of new cards online. 4) Build the deck. 5) Realize the deck is crap at being good/flavorful/silly/all of the above. 6) Dismantle the deck before playing a single game with it.

The best thing (to me) about EDH is: The games last longer than any other format. If one player pulls ahead, everyone else beats them back down. Victories are usally out of blue and memorable.
I build my EDH decks by (please be brief): Picking a color, then a general, then building around that general. Sometimes I assign a personally to my general and go from there. Maralen is the queen and doesn't attack, Sigarda hates artifacts (that deck has no artifacts in it).
Also, my favorite creature type is Angel.

The best thing (to me) about EDH is: Variety is the spice of life. I love the fact that the game is slower and allows for cool interactions and plays. Cards that have been forgotten to time can effectively be used for a neat combo. I am also a bit of a magpie, so tricking out a deck with cool cards is always fun.

Also, I would have to be right there with you madhatter00o, I used to know the rules very well but now so much has been added its taking time to figured it all out and to see if things have changed. A for-instance would be the other day I was playing a casual red deck on cockatrice (the only 60 card deck I could remember) and I went to attack with a raging goblin. Dude decides to not block and take the damage, to which I respond with a Blood Lust. He was like "I don't think you can do that". Can you no longer bust someone with a giant growth or a blood lust anymore?
That move was perfectly legal, I just think he might have been confused by the wording of the old card. You can still giant growth after they choose not to block.

I know I'm a little late responding (I'm studying in Japan right now, so the time zones are a little wonky), but Shorty is right: your opponent is wrong. Blood Lust essentially makes your creature a X+4/1 no matter what.

The best thing (to me) about EDH is: You can actually play the big, splashy cards that any other format prevents you from playing. That and the extra life cushion.

Do I play in EDH tourneys?: It depends on what you call tourneys. I sometimes compete at my LGS and have won a little bit of instore credit there (only about $15)
Do I play other MtG formats? (If yes, please state which ones): Standard, and have just recently created a cube (its just a bunch of crappy commons). I also do prereleases.
I build my EDH decks by (please be brief): I just try to build around the commander and include as much goodstuff as possible.

My favourite card type is: Enchantment, hopefully one that messes with things as much as possible. Teferi's Realm is kinda funny. Bad, but funny.

I find this counterintuitive since GB was an extremely oppressive deck in his life time getting up there with hermit druid, if you banned druid and unbanned GB you would have an even stronger combo deck in your meta.

If I could live on a land card, it would be: Seaside Citadel. Gorgeous view of the oceans, living in a sunlight-filled castle, friendly competitions abound, stables full of all kinds of amazing animals just a few flights of stairs away, and most important of all, peace. I wouldn't want to live in a war-torn area.
If I could add any one card to the banlist, it would be: Hermit Druid. There is absolutely no way for this card to be used fairly without being a complete stinker, and it's the center of a combo that's incredibly fast and difficult to disrupt. Sylvan Primordial is close--it's almost as bad as Sundering Titan.
If I could remove any one card from the banlist, it would be: I personally think nothing needs to come off the banlist. If I absolutely had to pick one card, it would be Tolarian Academy. I picked one up specifically for Commander, then it got banned a year later.
The best thing (to me) about EDH is: You don't have to worry about being competitive. The way I see Commander, if everyone doesn't have fun, no one wins. Silliness is encouraged, unlike in other formats.

I build my EDH decks by (please be brief): Writing a short backstory of an original character to port to the MTG world, finding a commander that is closest to what the character is like. and build around it.

It is commonly used as an efficient dredge card. In the hermit druid scion combo deck it is absurdly broken, but otherwise it really isn't unfair.
I think balance would be a nice unban, limited resources is much too strong but Balance is a nice white spell, sure it's super aggressively costed, but the ability to counteract ramp is great and it's a bit less hateful than total mld that people hate.
Also I think gift's ungiven would be a sweet unban.
