I've bought and used pie crusts for desserts, but they weren't really pie... mostly pudding and crushed oreos in a pie crust.

The Merciless Lord of Torture, Permanently Bound To: ">[THE PACK] 11/5/63 - 11/25/09 Goodbye mom, i'll always love you...
Alright guys, time to play everyone's favorite game
Custom Card Ideas. Or rather in this case mechanics.
New way of casting spells. The idea being that mana from the world doesn't cast the spell, but special mana that your own body generates. "Soul mana" if you will. I toyed with the idea of making a whole new mana type and template but I don't have the skill to actually create these things. Though I am not opposed to such ideas if you have them.
Has to follow these rules.
No life loss
No sacrifices
It can be (but doesn't have to be) restricted to board states (IE can only be cast if you control a creature)
So far this is probably the best idea, from a friend.
Make a new subtype for creatures, instants and sorceries. like Soul or something. So you'd have "Soul Creature- Human Soldier" or "Soul Sorcery." All Soul instant/sorceries can only be cast if you control a Soul Creature. And to make life easy, make soul creatures cost colored mana and all soul instant/sorceries cost colorless mana. For the frames, well just use whatever really.
The good part about this, is that it can work with PW's too. My biggest problem with this idea is that for creatures, it would make the type line really short with legendaries. And I abhor making tiny squished together type lines. This means it either needs to be reworded, or give certain creatures a keyword ability that allows them to cast the spells.
What if it went the Spirit/Arcane route. But the real question is how do you play the first creatures? Furthermore this could create a very linear style of play. My proposition is that creatures or permanents are played normally. However to play instants and sorceries require X amount of "soul" permanents in play. And instead of tapping manager you suspend X amount of cards for a turn.
So I latched on to Sarah's idea of using a new sub type, but didn't like the creature idea. So I decided that the instants and sorceries will have the sub type and certain creatures will have a special keyword to cast them.
The spells will cost colorless mana, but only be able to be cast if you control one of the special creatures OR a planeswalker.
The creatures will have a special keyword that will not effect the cost or power level of the creatures.
So those are my two example cards. The names soul and attunement are just placeholder names. My biggest problem is coloration, trying to make them colorless but still have colors. But then that kind of defeats the whole purpose... blah
This is what I get for trying to adapt non-MTG spell mechanics to MTG...
MtG already saved these problems for us. Here are the examples. The color indicator is the dot just to the left of the sub-type. Like that on the clans favorite set of flavor cards. But you want them to be colorless, I'm not sold on that being the right approach. Giving souls a color identity seems natural a green mage has access to green mana by virtue of his green inclined soul. Now the cards cost can be colorless sure but no need to claim the cards as colorless.
Make a convoke-ish mechanic to get the "colorless but has colors" effect?
Attunement (Each nonland permanent you tap to cast this spell reduces its cost by 1. This spell is all colors of the permanents attuned to it.)
So using your burn spell example, you could cast it for 4 mana, or if you controlled a red creature and a red-black enchantment, you could tap them to cast it for 2 mana. However in doing so you couldn't cast it on a creature with protection from black or red.
I don't like abilities that are strict drawbacks, especially when they constrain your deckbuilding (like how poison makes it so you can't run many non-poison creatures) and make the spell uncastable when you're behind on board.
Hey guys, I'm back from my long hiatus. Last couple years have been a little rough and plenty busy, but I think I can find time to be active on the forums again.

And I thought my prodigal trips were long. Welcome back!!!
Edit: I thing Ashnod's Coupon is now one of my favorite flavor cards. I wish I'd had one when Seth and I were going to CD.

Hmmmm... tough to think of something that hasn't already been done, but also doesn't require actually changing the rules of the game... Still, they say that restriction breeds creativity, so here goes nothing:
Forcecast N (you may cast this without paying its mana cost. The next N spells you cast that share a colour with this are countered.)
The flavour of this is that everyone has a certain amount of mana of any given colour bottled up inside them, which is what's being spent when spells are being cast in this way. A blue spell with a high value for N (a counter effect would be a good example) uses up a lot more of your inherent blue mana, forcing you to forego a certain amount of blue magic before you can do any more.
I'm absolutely certain that my wording is riddled with errors (the rules have probably changed since I last played anyway), and most likely there a couple of rules issues such as memory that have to be dealt with. That's for you guys to sort out, I'm not even going to try.
EDIT: Also requires a new name that doesn't look so much like "forecast" at a glance.
Perhaps "primalcast"? The feel I was trying to get across is that it's internal mana that not everyone knows they have. It's primal, instinctive and raw.
Welcome back too! *glomps Castle* cookie? *holds out cookie* :cookie:Cheers *shakes hands with cookie*
I thought I'd dispense with the grand entrance this time, probably safer just to acknowledge the fact that I come and go fairly randomly these days (although perhaps "these years" might be more apt). I now have a reliable Internet connection at home, so hopefully being able to use an actual keyboard (*sheds a joyful tear in the face of sweet mercy*) instead of my iPhone will assist me in contributing more often.
You don't like it? I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it just then, but now that you have I'm quite keen on it.
i noticed immediately and cant find a way to change it back. it's the light green instead of white that im reading on... it's ****ing with my eyes. Therefore, I'm going to go for a while and probably wont respond till I can ****ing fix this.

you were so quiet trying to slip in i had to check n see if i hadnt missed your re-entry XD. *pokes* since when has this pack been subtle about anything?
*pokes* since when has this pack been subtle about anything?
Good point.
So, what does everyone think of being back in Ravnica? I'm stoked, although it bugs me that I haven't had the opportunity to actually try out any of the new cards. Loving what I've read of Rakdos so far. I tried mocking up a cheap BRG aggro deck, but goldfishing has proven a bit awkward so far. I think I've just been out of the game too long, I've lost my instinct for what would get a pass mark. :/
We found that the default skin was the source of the Malware problem we've been having, therefore we had to disable it.
We are working to correct the problem but, until it is fixed, the only way to maintain site security is to default every user to Green and not let them change it. Sorry. we will back to normal as soon as possible...
Oh oh! I completely understand that reasoning. By all means, do figure out the malware dealie. I wouldn't mind the green so much if it didn't use off-green where the white used to be. *shrug* maybe my eyes are just weird. I didnt expect an explanation, but now I feel like "That's awesome, thanks!" *thumbs up*

Funny timing, that, Castle. My friend is headed on a trip to Australia next month. Any special precautions I should warn him to take with the natives?
Just watch out for the drop-bears...
Seriously though, do you know where in Australia he's planning to visit? As a general rule the natives (I'm assuming by this you mean Australians, not Aborigines specifically) are pretty easy-going.
Though honestly when it comes to deserts there is little I wont eat. *pats potbelly*

My instincts kinda went AWOL when it comes to deck building. Maybe one day when I get back into it I wont have to start fresh like a beginner.
