Anyways! I'm curious to everyone's opinion of Mizzium Mortars. I like that it does 4 damage to a creature with the potential to clear the board (due to Overload), but I don't like that it can't deal damage to a player. For my Standard creation, I'm going burn-aggro with very slight control, and I'm not convinced Mizzium Mortars is versatile enough for my needs. Any thoughts?
I would say mortars is still a good idea. 2 mana for 4 damage is pretty efficient in this standard environment as far as burns go (unless i'm forgetting something.) Yes, it doesn't hit players, but it allows you to stop creatures without wasting all your burn spells that could be hitting their face.
Also, you guys have probably talked about this already, but I'm curious as to what you guys think of overload as the izzet mechanic. I'm personally pretty disappointed. Yeah, overload is cool and flavorful, but it seems like a worse replicate, a mechanic I wasn't that fond of to begin with. Replicate let you power up your spell to your liking; it could be a 1, a 10, or anything in between. Overload simplifies that by giving me only two options (1 and 10) while being limited only to spells that target (there's no overload draw spell for example.)

It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.
Great to see everyone again! I seem to be the Teleportaling mage around here lately.
@ Russian Alara: We'll have to restructure our leadership in some way IMO. I am no longer the official leader since I stepped down a while back ago but things have been in limbo since. I really don't want to have things continue like this so we'll have to figure out what needs to be done.
@ AI: That looks like an absolutely insane card pool. I went 3-2 in my own prerelease going Izzet. I too also managed to get Niv-Mizzet in my pool, but my support for Izzet was pretty weak. I did get Mizzium Mortars too, but card quality dropped drastically after that. I had 3x Viashino Racketeer and a Thoughtflare, which I used a lot in games to dig for Niv-Mizzet. I'm not going to lie when almost all of my wins during the day came from digging for Niv-Mizzet and untapping with him. Thoughtflare really burns through the deck.
@ MOON-E: Replicate and overload are very similar in their abilities to make the spells they are on modal and scale as the game progresses. I like overload because its scaling of the spell is a lot more drastic than that of replicate. You have to sink a serious amount of mana into a replicate spell to get something truly effective while with overload the mana investment is not as large to get the big part of the spell. So while you don't have nearly the freedom to scale the spell like you do with replicate, your return on investment is a lot better with overload.
Finally, I'll conclude with a new addition to my car!
Overload is AMAZING! With Goblin Electromancer, the Overload cost is reduced and you can sometimes get away with casting a spell for the same as or a little more than its normal casting cost. I've found very few Replicate cards that are worth it (obviously Shattering Spree is worth it). But I don't want to pay the same casting cost over and over, especially when that cost is, in my opinion, too high. Overload is a little simpler and versatile. Early game, just cast as normal. Late game, Overload the crap out of the board! Remember: If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing! >:3
I agree that overload plays a whole lot better than replicate (and I'm not really trying to defend replicate, i didn't like it very much), but i'm mostly disappointed in it from a design standpoint. Only the tworares really sell me the idea of overloading a spell to make it super powerful, the rest just fall flat for me. I think a big part of this is the fact that they require targets, which usually means creatures, which isn't something i want to be thinking about while playing Izzet.
Perhaps I dislike it because it's so predictable. I mean, I was able to predict almost every overload card (I missed chemister's trick and counterflux) when I first saw the mechanic. Maybe sinker will surprise me.
Replicate went on a larger variety of different spells, each of which worked slightly differently. This meant that even though replicate was always the same, it felt different on different cards. Overload does the same thing on each spell, which makes it feel boring to me.
I guess everyone has their own opinion, and I do think overload can be cool (like on the two rares, which I like a lot), but they didn't quite nail it with this first batch.

I knew Artifice posted something about limited time and not being able to continue as representative, but when did you step down?
And who is officially unlucky as the new leader since a lot of questions have popped up?
I'd agree that there needs to be a way to regroup and reorganize the ranks somehow, even if it has to result in drastic measures. If my temporal mastery was stable I'd volunteer, but you all know how spotty my attendance has been.
(I haven't peeled off my sticker. It's still in the guild box.)

When asked how much power is required, Izzet mages always answer "more".
Oh, shame, man. I could make a joke about us being mad scientists, and that all we need is our firemind-inspired work to keep us happy, but that would ring kinda hollow. My sympathies.
@Dangit12: *mad grin spreads over face* Would you like to assist my experimentation into teleportals? I've gotten to the point where testing on goblins has become unfeasible (read: I've run out of the hyperactive buggers) and need a test subject of different dimensions.
Oh yeah, and here's an official Izzet :cookie:. Try not to think about why it's an Izzet cookie.

the new improved Anti Selesnyan version?
On a serious note : We need not just Reconstruction of ranks but a recruiting branch . Think Field offices in every tourney... you go to guys/ gals
This guild needs order ( yes sort of Azorius in me), we need new blood.
The sister hall on Darkness is a mere 2 constant members, including myself , and some pop-ins occasionally and we need people as well , but with the disarray here, we need order here first as this is the parent division.
I would love to be leader but I can't since college and the fact that I practically run the sister hall.
Bring every Izzet you can to the halls!
My views :
RWF Less as leader if permitting, MirrorEnity as clan rep.
I don't think that new membership will be a problem, guys.
It's Izzet Moonlighting time once more. This clan has stayed alive since the original ravnica block. Its about time you guys get the attention you deserve again.
Glory to the firemind.

sure i could do that i always liked teleportation.
Wow, lots of new member requests. Welcome to the firemind. For those of you who survive the first week, there's a prize of goblipults. I can see why we might need to restructure. My chronomancy shenanigans aren't helpful for my posting rate, but I'll see if I can't stick around a bit longer this time.
I'll back RWF Less as leader and MirrorEnity as clan rep, at least until we get some other nominees to choose from.
Any test subjects want to try out my new clocktopus or paradox box?

If life gives you lemons... keep them. Because, hey, free lemons.
Great, dangit, report to Bins, the goblin at the entrance of the Boilerpits nearest Nivix. He'll lead you through to where the experiments are taking place. Oh, and if you happen to run into a grey, gloopy weird sloshing around and eating sections of wall, could you just stun it and bring it with you? I'm hoping it hasn't gotten to the surface and started absorbing Azorius members... They still haven't forgiven me for that incident with the drake.
It was at that moment that I realized: I'm kinda just making these things up. We can just write the rules the way we want them to work. People will have fun, and people will get it.

Umm... I found that instant/sorcery shenanigans were good. So, Goblin Electromancers, Guttersnipes, Essence Backlash, that Annihilation card that does 3 damage, etc. are all useful. Don't forget to attack. And if you don't win at least half your matches, you get to help me with my essence reduction experiments >:3

That's perfect; I really want to force that guttersnipe/electromancer deck. Hopefully izzet left a bad taste in people's mouths from the prerelease and the avoid drafting it.

I couldn't go to the release... too much reading for school. T_T;
Plus, between the pre-release and the box, I'd already gotten pretty much everything I wanted from the set (Still looking for Counterfluxes and Epic Experiments, though)
So much school -.- stresses me out. Just got done with homecoming week (partied like a rock star) and havent had much time to play magic. I did pull a foil Trostani in my first Ravnica pack yessss! And finished my Goblin primer for standard (check it out in my signature). How is everyone else's awesome lives going?
