Pauper is a great format to challenge deck building skills in, I have seen people with highly efficient decks for less than 10$, some of them might even give standard decks a tough time even trying to win. My own pauper decks have always been mediocre though, since I have a tendency to run aggro decks when I want to make a pauper deck.

I will be leaving MTGS after my current mafia games are completed. Its been a good run but I can't be here anymore. The staff have made this place an absolute **** hole to visit. Good luck to all my clannies and maybe in the future I might come back to say hi. But really don't hold your breath (unless youre trying to keep the stink of this site out of your nose)
So I've been hanging around MTGS for a little while and by now I'm sure I'll stick around. I play two mono black decks for casual but still legacy legal, and my next EDH deck will be of the mono black variety, so if there's a clan for me to join, this one is it.
As the price of membership, I submit to you my very favorite deck. In my mind, this deck highlights everything that B stands for. I drain life, I sacrifice my own creatures, I kill yours, I search for large demons, and I create zombies. If I can't win, I will kill us both. No price is too high.
Playing this deck in particular taught me a lot about magic, but most the most important lesson is "Life is a resource." I am just as comfortable piloting this deck at 2 life as I am at 20.
I've never taken this to a Legacy tournament, but I'd like to. I'd also like to know it's worth trying before I do, so comments are certainly welcome.

"[Screw] you and the green you ramped in on." - My EDH battle cry. If I had one. Which I don't.
I've never taken this to a Legacy tournament, but I'd like to. I'd also like to know it's worth trying before I do, so comments are certainly welcome.
First of all you need a sideboard, since you need to prepare cards to deal with decks which would stomp right over you. In this case, combo decks is probably auto-loss for you as it is and I am not sure you got the speed to take down an aggro deck in a race, since I have not played the deck myself, those thoughts are just what popped into my head when I saw the list. The deck seems functioning and fun, but the individual card quality might be too low for you to have a decent chance in a legacy environment. It depends of course on how well developed the meta you are going to play in are.
I would recommend you to go as a spectator at your local legacy tournament to see the decks which are getting played and try to estimate your chances against them. Also not running a play-set of hymns is weird, it is one of the best black spells ever printed. You should also be very afraid of graveyard hate, as your only card advantage are generated from there (The 2 hymns do generate advantage as well, but that is 2 cards if your graveyard gets shut down).
There are some factors you should consider when building a deck for legacy:
1. How fast is my clock? (You should try to keep it at max 5 maybe 6 turns when you goldfish by yourself), if you are running a control deck the question is instead: How fast can I stabilize?
2. What is the greatest weakness of the deck and how can I optimize the deck so the weakness becomes less relevant?
3. Are the cards I use optimal in the slots I play them in, or is there a better option? (An example could be a be running shock instead of lightning bolt, the shock is obviously a bad choice in that slot)
4. What decks do I expect to see and what can I do to make life as much of a hell as possible for them, without destroying the function of my deck.
5. What matchups are so bad that I can forget about winning them and what matchups are even, favorable or unfavorable. The even and unfavorable matches need to be enhanced in game 2 and 3 by cards from the sideboard.
Take a look at your deck and try to analyze it after those five pointers (another reason to go as a spectator). You can always take a deck and give it a go for the fun if you don't mind losing, but I do believe it is important to have information about the meta before bringing the deck to battle.
Good luck with playing the deck in a tournament or tuning it.

Welcome! Good to see new faces around here.
The deck looks like a lot of fun. Honestly though, it won't hold up in legacy the way it is now. There is an incredible amount of very efficient disruption in the format as it's needed to stop the combo decks in the environment. Scion is a big part of your plan, but you don't have the disruptive elements to protect him or slow down your opponent so your drain plan works.

I've never had a problem with the mods, but I'm pretty much a browser of Cube/Commander exclusively at this point.
So not to be all crazy starting rioting and looting(more of a red thing than black) do we have a strong clan without tordeck? Since I've been here or even when I was just lingering in the corner he has been kinda the guy. Not sure what his position really dose(not sure what any positions really do. Do we do stuff here?) but is their anyone that can do it in his stead?
Tor and I have basically been tag teaming as clan rep for a bit now. I also tend to do a lot with regards to the clan contests.
Of course, I'd rather SA take the mantle and have me go back to being a Scion, but that's just cause I'd rather have the authority without the responsibility.
Looking it up, I've actually been in [CMB] over 3 years. Did not think it was that long ago.

So, in a less power snatching discussion (not that there is anything wrong with that in this clan), I am not coming out of an effective 2 year break. During that break, I have only stepped out of my EDH world twice for anything non commander, and that was GP Pittsburgh and States last year. I must say, it is difficult to get back when you're out. Standard suddenly gets much more limited when you're lacking about half of Innistrad block. As of now, am thinking that Junk Tokens might be pretty decent. I am also thinking that its the cheapest deck I can play that I still feels has enough potential....I hate being a poor college student....

My friend just took a midrange "mostly black" vampire controlish to our fnm and got a spotless record of 2-0 victories the whole night facing some decks that were perfectly copied from cincinatti. the only expensive cards were aristocrates but the core of the deck was early disruption with pillar of flame and tragic slip then he would play the lord from dark ascension then drop a nocturnous or two and take the win. he didn't even have the shocklands he just ran guildgates(he got the shocklands during the course of the night.) One deck I think could end up working is a MBC deck that splashes Green. For some reason, I really want to pop off a Vraska after a Mutilate....:D
That deck does look interesting though. Considering I have a limited income during school since I only work part time, I know I can't have a decent deck built straight up. That and some of my free funds are being relocated to Assassins Creed III.
That said, I have been building up my dual collection. You know you have EDHD when your goal is to outfit all your EDH decks with Shock lands now that they are cheaper and you would eventually end up with a set and a half of each dual......
See:
Note, only a few are completely optimized. A majority are only in need of a few modifications and acquisitions, four are skeletons that need their first major overhaul. Its sad that most of them are really decent....Bolas! Now I see why I need a girlfriend....:-/
In other news, there's a pumpkin carving contest in the works. Anyone interested? Because this is not a thing I, personally, will be doing. The carving is supposed to be something clan-related, which in our case is 'anything you would normally carve into a pumpkin' 'cause we're cool like that.
I've also gotten a lot of shiny new acquisitions recently.
Got this from someone here on MTGS for way less than it probably should have been posted for. Hazard of not including a scan with the listing. I asked to see a scan, and immediately went for it.
Opened 2 boxes of RtR. One of them had this guy.
Got this as a throw-in on a trade. Not useful, but damn it looks awesome.
Had a lot of fun at states, but win-and-in fail. I got paired down, he thought he had a chance at top 8, he did not, it was a mirror match, and he had better draws.
Didn't get to do a lot of trading either, as most of what I have for trade is legacy/EDH foils which can be very hard to move in some locales. Still, paper for cardboard pretty much always works so I got this stack for ~200.
That was a good deal.
1. How fast is my clock? (You should try to keep it at max 5 maybe 6 turns when you goldfish by yourself), if you are running a control deck the question is instead: How fast can I stabilize? Five feels reasonably easy. All I need to do is turn sideways with enough clerics early that I can burn the rest of the life out with the Archon or Shepherd.
2. What is the greatest weakness of the deck and how can I optimize the deck so the weakness becomes less relevant? If anything, my weakness will be Combo players. I've worked up a new version of this for more disruption, I'd like to see what you think of that.
3. Are the cards I use optimal in the slots I play them in, or is there a better option? I've been over every cleric available. Yeah, I'm using the best ones. Withered Wretch is one of my sideboard cards for my graveyard hate. Spells on the other hand, not so sure.
Here goes take two, keeping a lot of what you said in mind. Disruption has a higher priority now.
Cabal Therapy is the biggest addition, and I've jumped the number of Hymns. I dropped the Order of the Ebon Hand because I'm not sure the first strike/pro white will be that important. The Soldevi Adnate I think I'm going to miss, but the Shepherd of Rot is better for my clock. I'm considering exchanging Oath of Ghouls for Phyrexian Arena; I'm not sure which is better. Oath is a guaranteed creature in my hand, but Arena is less susceptible to disruption. Arena also costs more mana.
I'm still mulling over what the sideboard should be, but I'm thinking a few Pithing Needles, Engineered Plague, and the Withered Wretch as I've mentioned for graveyard hate.
Am I going the right direction for Legacy? Can this direction ever get me where I want to be? I'm not looking to sweep a tournament, I just don't want to be "that guy" who wastes everyone's time. I'd be happy if I turned a few heads.
The deck looks like a lot of fun. Honestly though, it won't hold up in legacy the way it is now. The deck is the most fun thing I've ever played. I really suggest giving it a go, as it's very cheap if you take out the Cavern of Souls (which it doesn't need).
I'm trying to up the disruptive elements of my deck, but that's more to deal with Combo than to protect my creatures. The Scion actually isn't a big part of my plan. Ever since the addition of the Skirsdag High Priest, nowadays I only want to sacrifice one cleric at a time. My friends know how powerful the Scion can be, so they save their removal for him. Eventually, my clerics become enough of a threat that they throw that removal at my clerics, and that's when the Scion comes out and goes all stompy. Usually by then, though, they have drawn even more removal, but I stopped caring because I also created an army of zombie tokens.

I got a question about the rewired version. How often do you actually find yourself using Dark Supplicant to pump out the Scion, because as I see it, it is a win-more combo, since it cannot be pulled off when you are behind and it is easily removable? Because if you remove those 5 cards you can add in a split Inquisition of Kozilek and Duress to add more disruption. And on the oath of ghouls/phyrexian arena issue. The opponent might bring in Leyline of the Void post board to deal with your rotlung reanimators, which also renders oath of ghouls useless, other graveyard hate is not as bad as leylines, but leylines even turn your oath AGAINST you. Have you thought of two Graveborn Muse instead, when running that many zombies it is risky, but cabal therapy and tragic slip can get rid of it and the lifegain from the archon is beneficial too.
But yes, you are on the right way.

I've been thinking about that ever since I took out the Urborg Justice to find room for more disruption. I'm using the Supplicant less and less as time goes by, but I still find cases where he is what wins me the game. Granted, these have been in casual atmosphere and multiplayer games, so that should have no bearing on Legacy. Removing him basically means my turn one play is always "You discard something" or "Dark rit, now you discard three things." I kind of like the sound of that...
Still, the deck really started around the Scion combo and the interaction is extremely flavorful, so I'm really reluctant to take it out. Do I really need that much disruption?
And on the oath of ghouls/phyrexian arena issue. The opponent might bring in Leyline of the Void post board to deal with your rotlung reanimators, which also renders oath of ghouls useless, other graveyard hate is not as bad as leylines, but leylines even turn your oath AGAINST you.
This is a good point I hadn't thought of. Oath is extremely vulnerable.

I really like this idea, except that she costs four mana. I'm not playing her before turn four without a Ritual. Then again, she's certainly worth the Dark Rit, because it will lead me into more Rits and clerics to drain more life. Just thinking out loud here, I think, yes, I need to have this card.
Hmmm... do I need the Tragic Slips if I have enough discard? Theoretically, I can eliminate the threats before they hit the board. What do I even care if my opponent attacks with creatures? I'll just chump-block sac.
I notice I've gone to the extreme where everything is a four-of. Is that generally a good sign?
Generally speaking, yeah. You'll notice the 1- and 2-ofs a lot more in the decks playing for a long game.
On Graveborn Muse vs Phyrexian Arena, I'd tend to default to Arena. It's much more feasible to cast without Ritual, and with Ritual it's a turn 1 play. It's also a much less vulnerable permanent type.
I would suggest maybe 2 of the Swamps be exchanged for Cabal Pits.

Unfortunately, one of the things I like about the Muse is that she's vulnerable. I want to be able to get rid of her once she's done. I'm looking at it like a frontloaded Arena. What Arena does in five turns she might do in two; drawing three or four cards per turn is scary good.
I would suggest maybe 2 of the Swamps be exchanged for Cabal Pits.
Ooh, good call. I like it, both for theme and the ability to knock out annoying things. While we're on the subject of land, I notice I've thinned the number of Clerics. I wonder if I need the Starlit Sanctums, and if there are too many Caverns at 4.

You are playing 16 instants and sorceries. There is not a generic mana in the cost of a single one of them.
Ha. You make me sound so silly when you phrase it that way. Sanctums are out for sure and I'll cut a few Caverns.
Now it's a question of how many to cut. When I'm against that control player, I need to be able to force the Archon through. Is three Caverns too many? Is two enough? ... I'll need to do a lot of playtesting.
Also, apologies for jacking so much of the thread. I'm happy at this point; you guys are great.

Me, i was Dimir, with lesser alternatives of Orzhov, Golgari, and Azorius.
As such, for my planeswalker points guild, I chose Dimir.
I am just curious as to the clans demographics on this.

Here goes take two, keeping a lot of what you said in mind. Disruption has a higher priority now.
4 Cavern of Souls
2 Starlit Sanctum
14 Swamp
CLERICS (25)
4 Dark Supplicant
4 Skirsdag High Priest
4 Shepherd of Rot
4 Cabal Archon
4 Rotlung Reanimator
3 Priest of Gix
1 Scion of Darkness
MAGICAL POWERS (14)
4 Dark Ritual
4 Hymn to Tourach
3 Tragic Slip
3 Cabal Therapy
2 Oath of Ghouls

Latest Decklist:
4 Cavern of Souls
2 Starlit Sanctum
14 Swamp
CLERICS (20)
4 Skirsdag High Priest
4 Shepherd of Rot
4 Cabal Archon
4 Rotlung Reanimator
4 Priest of Gix
4 Graveborn Muse
MAGICAL POWERS (16)
4 Dark Ritual
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Cabal Therapy
I notice I've gone to the extreme where everything is a four-of. Is that generally a good sign?
Pristaxcontrombmodruu!
I thought so.
Unfortunately, one of the things I like about the Muse is that she's vulnerable. I want to be able to get rid of her once she's done. I'm looking at it like a frontloaded Arena. What Arena does in five turns she might do in two; drawing three or four cards per turn is scary good.
Ooh, good call. I like it, both for theme and the ability to knock out annoying things. While we're on the subject of land, I notice I've thinned the number of Clerics. I wonder if I need the Starlit Sanctums, and if there are too many Caverns at 4.
Pristaxcontrombmodruu!
