I figured we could move the book discussion over here. I'm reading the Cat in the Hat today to a bunch of kids. The school is bilingual, so I'll read in English. What are you guys reading or up to?
I'm currently reading Andy Field - Discovering Statistics using SPSS, my 5-years-ago past-self would have laughed at the idea of reading a statistics book for 'fun'.
Also, I heard Recettear is a good game. Is it worth picking up even if I'm not a die hard JRPG player?

recettear is amazing im not a die hard jrpg fan(and ialso dont consider it a jrpg tbh)and i loved the crap out of that game.
i barely delved into the dungeon part because the shop running was honestly that enthralling.
I hate reading multiple books at one time, but somehow I got myself into this ****ty situation:
I've been reading Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson for the past 6 months and haven't got very far. It's been my "before bed at my g/f's waiting for her to come to bed" book.
I'm also reading In the Plex by Steven Levy. A book about the early days at Google.
And I'm eventually going to borrow an Analytical Methods book from one of my coworkers so I can be better at my job.

Recettear is the Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead of video games. The gameplay isn't revolutionary but the concept is brilliant enough to make it interesting. I never got into the crazy grindy endgame but just playing through was enough to satisfy.
I'm sitting in my living room watching The Open. Tiger and Adam Scott are moving along nicely...but there are 4 or 5 guys sitting at -4. Adam Scott just went -6!
Calm morning, golf on TV, don't have to go into the office....I love it.

I envy you so much right now. Good envy.
I enjoy watching golf too. But I can't say I follow it.
Are you familiar with Sports Night? Is this similar in themes? Are the characters as interesting and well-developed? When I watched Sports Night, it was like hanging out with friends. Did you get this feeling from The Newsroom? Because it would be a PITA to get my hands on it, but if it's worthwhile...I might do it.
Harkius
i watched both harkius and id say that they are pretty different in feel, sports night is as you pointed out fairly lighthearted. the newsroom is very different. it still has that magical sorkin writing that is so interesting but it is very intense.
i do highly reccomend the show it is currently one of my favorite things on tv right now
I'd feel a little more comfortable if poggydude and harkius didn't have a conversation in this thread. It's the only escape left on this site without Harkius globbing up the page with his....."ness"....I would prefer not to see it in here.
I make this request as a clan member in my clan thread. I realize the opening page has invited all members to post, but I feel we have the right to ask those not associated with this clan to desist.
thank you

That said, peace out, jonnyjonski. This is you all's space, and if any of you don't want me posting here, I will respect that.
In any case, I asked a question about a very targeted thing that would be hard to get elsewhere. I'd still like an answer from Jobie, as I tend to agree with his taste in videotaped entertainments. If he's uncomfortable posting it, or someone doesn't want it here, I'd appreciate it as a PM.
Enjoy your space, fellas and ladies.
Harkius
Let's call it bad timing.
Also if you are reading this (which I am assuming), I have not seen Jobie online for some time so my first guess would not be that he is uncomfortable.

i wasnt trying to start anything but ive been archive dumping as much of sorkins work as i can without spending extra money and since an oppurtunuty to discuss it arose i took it.
Basically clan contests are fun little things that create some interactivity between the clans. They're not required, but it's a nice little ego stroke to win CotY.
I'm basically worthless when it comes to Magic-related contests. I haven't played since Ravnica (GOGO Ravnica)

Naw dude....I gots no probs witchoo!
So went and saw Volbeat last night...what a great show! Some goofy band named Iced Earth opened for them...they were ok but I wasn't terribly impressed. I was excited to see the Hellyeahs though. I didn't know they were part of the opening act and they were excellent. Last time I saw Vinnie Paul (drummer for Pantera) was at Pantera in 1992! He sounded spot on as always.
I just need to rub some ointments on my old joints now!

How is Volbeat live? I'm a huge metalhead (Iced Earth is actually one of my favorite bands, saw them back in Feburary/March sometime), and my little brother goes crazy for Volbeat. I've heard like one of their songs, and it didn't sound bad, but it didn't sound very "metal" to me, but I could just be mis-classifying them.
In other related news, I saw Iron Maiden (my favorite band) for the 4th time this past monday (Alice Cooper opened). What a show...
Jealous of Iron Maiden....saw them back in 1992 with Anthrax opening for them! Front row....freaking awesome.
Volbeat was really good. They are a rockabilly/metal hybrid. They can be really heavy and hard, but they have a Misfits style vocalling that's really "hooky". The sounded incredible live and were very entertaining. I hadn't heard of them before my buddy asked me to go and meet up with people I hadn't seen in 15 years. I started listening to them to get an idea of their sound found them very appealing. The even throw in an element of some Reverend Horton Heat in their sound. I like it. The coolest part is they ended the show with Raining Blood...that was freaking awesome. Anytime you can incorporate some Slayer into your show it's complete win for me.

Yeah, my first concert ever was Iron Maiden in Ft. Lauderdale Florida (I'm from Western NY, so it was a ways away), on the final show of their "Somewhere Back in Time Tour" in '09. Needless to say... that was mind-blowing. Hope they come back in '13...
I'll definitely add Volbeat to my usual metal lineup. I get the feeling that they are the band that I'm going to feel uncomfortable about at first, but then come to love. (To be fair, I was the same way with Iron Maiden for a few months at first.)
