What do you guys/gals think about GMAD in the Casual forums? I always get excited when a new GMAD is about to start in hopes that I get picked. I already have my next card in mind.
I'm always fascinated in how the Spikes, Timmys, and Johnnies try to compromise in creating a deck. The participants have changed over time. It used to be strongly influenced by Spikes. Back then, if you tried to add a card that was more "fun" than "killer", you could be assured that it would be voted off pretty quickly. After a certain user got banned, everything changed.
Now it seems like Johnnies have taken over GMAD, which I think is a good thing. There's nothing wrong with wanting to win, but kitchen table players tend to try having fun on the way to winning.
I liked it back when I hosted it. I was glad that he got banned but him and I arguing made me stop hosting them.
Now I'm thinking of making Jarad my next EDH general.
You and me both. I havent finished my drana build and already i want to work this guy in with 99 other cards.
I love gmad! I am simply too timid to post more than a couple times in each one because there are ppl that know this game and its cards far better than I, even after 14 years. I admit i like convoluted casual decks that take 10+ turns to set up and kill.
@bone_doc: no suggestions on cuts, but gotta say I am glad to see buried alive, entomb, and living death in here! Those three are going in my jarad build as well. Very solid choices otherwise. I don't envy you having to make the cuts. Good luck!
Ok. Some ideas overlap though so if you see something with WR for example and soemthing else with WRB then assume if I could, I'd put them together.
Well for EDH:
Pretty easy, WU gives the blink, R gives pretty cool effects, G gives beneficial effects, B gives awesome effects but I already got the color combination, just WU gives best general for it (Rasputin)
Agro/reanimator/ETB abuse (essentially, this would be an agro deck that would wipe the board whenever there'd be a lot of blockers. Then you gain a crapload of LTB effects (you could also sac your guys to sac outlets). Thing is RB has some pretty vicious ETB effects, and undercosted creatures with drawback. Play em ALL. You got a huge life buffer, tons of life gain from WRB (effects that steal life essentially, which helps with the agro) then when you run out of gas, hit a big "return everything to the field" to get tons of ETB effect again (you can also add a bit of blink from white, reuse WTB effect and protect your dudes) to keep your opponents from getting an army too, run selective grave hate, which can make you abuse Tariel (Withered Wretch). Make it balls to the walls agro.
This would have some stealing effects. And sac effects. Blue Red give steal. Black Green Red gives Sac. Black gives it fun. Green gives it the mana it needs, but gives me the same ramp base as like 4 other EDH decks I have (cheapest fun steal/sac is 5 mana though). Now, I can't go 4 color, so I have to cut one. Cutting red doesn't work. Cutting blue gets rid of draw and my 2nd favorite timmy combo of Reins of Power and Soulblast, but insurrection works well too. Cutting green makes it really had for mana. Cutting black is the best option but removed the thing I based the deck off of. This was supposed to be evil steal sac. And it makes it my 3rd RUG EDH deck, with probably the same general as the other 2.
Riku (best color combination, but most unfun due to repeat general/color and going a bit spike for the deck, it also loses the deck's "soul")
Sek'Kuar (no blue, which I guess is ok, but seems low on draw and the fact that going this way would make the deck a lot like my Teysa deck (tokens/recursion and sac).
Thrax (fits with the deck, but is expensive mana wise but is the most "fun/least optimal choice"
Sedris (bit better than thrax with the reuse and cheaper mana, but less fun)
This would be an agro deck. Can work many ways. Tempo would be nice, but Thrax costs 7. I don't want this to be too controlley as I've got a lot of Control deck already. Thrax can take care of a few big creatures but not a ton of small ones. Easy. Put a lot of sweepers that deal damage (3-5 dmg to each creature) or give creatures Y/-X (where X would b 3-5). Then mix it with the steal/sac from above to deal with what survives in an evil way (huehuehue) then swing with Thrax on the survivors. Steal/sac buffs Thrax, you mad?
This deck would have a lot of Whenever ~ attacks/Deals damage to a player effects. Then add those "additional combat steps" for maximum fun. White gives me vigilance so I can abuse it more by copying the spells (red or blue) and not needed an extra untap (plus I can reuse the WR retrace extra combat step spell). Green gives me ramp and quite a few effects as well as land recur if I use the retrace spell. Blue give me draw so if I can get enough mana (green) I can go through my deck to chain cast more and more "additional combat" spells, has a lot of creatures with those effects (and Coastal Piracy), and give me copy effects to abuse vigilance if I got white. Black gives me evil effects when I attack, recursion in case of a wrath and the funnest cards.
All the three color dragons interact with this as their abilities occur when I attack.
RWU dragon sucks due to LD which I don't want, but Ruhan could be funny;
RUB dragon is cool, but in this color Thrax would rock! (L) and Sedris is better as well, as I can unearth creatures like Anarchist to reuse those extra combat cards. See #4
RGB dragon I find dumb, due to him being only "more damage" but the color combination is interesting, but I've already got a deck these colors (but doesn't play like this at all).
RWG dragon gives tokens, allows me to get infinite attack phases with Waves of Aggression/Life From the Loam, gives me ramp, but doesn't have blue or black it would be my first deck of those color though. (EDH or not)
RBW is cool, I like the color, see #2 would work well here.
RGU is the most efficient color, again. Riku is the best general for this again. wee happyness.
This would be RBU (or RUG) the idea is to play with your opponent's cards. Gain control, redirect, reanimate, cast their spells. And this is it. Riku gives me mana and doubles my stealing. Sedris lets me reuse wtb unearth creatures that help.
