Welcome to The Merchants Guild, here you will find many people who share an interest with buying, selling and trading of M:tG cards and items of such nature. Whether it be here on MTGS, eBay, or in person trades, there is always someone willing to help.
UPDATE 1: We have now opened our doors to people who purchase cards only (Buyers). This update, we feel, will not only help our guild grow, but to make it easier for members to do business.
UPDATE 2: We are now accepting general applications. This is mainly for the people who have an interest in trading and the like.
What can The Merchants Guild offer to you?
All of our members stay on top of current trends within the M:tG communities.
Tips and tricks to help you buy/sell/trade cards both physical and virtual (MTGO)
Chancellors that know the ins and outs both here and in other areas.
Helpful members if you do end up dealing with a ripper/bad trader.
A link to your trade/sell/buy list on our main page.
Many other things not listed here (yet).
What rules are there in The Merchants Guild?
Here on MTGS, we have rules that have to be abided by, including our own (we do try to limit our own rules, but you'll see why we have the ones we do in place). Please note that MTGS rules apply as well, regardless of our own rules! That means no flaming, trolling, spamming, etc. If a member is caught doing this on a consistent basis, they will be removed from the guild.
If you do buy/sell/trade here on MTGS, you must be familiar with the following rules:
These are the rules to JOIN the guild as a member:
I. 150 posts on the forums -OR- have been a forum member for at least 6 months.
II. 100% positive feedback (If you buy/sell/trade here.)
II-a. If you have more than 25 iTrader refs and less than 100% feedback, it will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
III. Can't have any open BTRs, within the past 3 months, against you.
IV. Can't be tradebanned or be suspended from trading.
V. Can't be a member of another clan/guild here.(We love friends though!)
Please note that ALL members that join of their own volition shall be put on a 30 day probation before becoming a full member. Members recommended or refered by a Chancellor are on probation for 15 days. During the probation time, you will NOT have a link to your buy/sell/trade list on the main page.
If you are a clan leader, we will be more than happy to have you as a "Union" (Friend). Once you are a friend of the guild, all members of your clan are allowed to post here, so long as they respect the members of our guild and other people.
The Rankings within the guild are as follows, however they are allowed to have their own 'titles' if they wish it.
These are kept simple:
Guild Leader - Oversees guild duties and members, updates the main page, et al. The Guild Leader also takes care of complaints and keeps a constant eye on the BTR area. If necessary, the Guild Leader also acts as a mediator between disputes within the Guild only.
Chancellors - The eyes and ears of the guild. If you have a question about something with the guild, or general M:tG items, ask them or the other members. Chancellors are also the in-between for items before they reach the Guild Leader.
Guild Representative - Only ONE person is in this position. This person is the go-between for clan/guild contests and the Clan Council. This person is appointed by the Guild Leader and there can only be ONE at a time.
Guild Representative (Backup) - This is a member that, in case the current representative can't make it, serves as the backup. There has currently been no need for such, but when the time comes, there will be only one and will be appointed by the Guild Leader AND Chancellors.
Guild Member - General guild member.
Union Member (Friends) - These are clans that have become friends of the guild. All members of the Union Member guild may post here so long as they abide by the general MTGS rules.
We require a membership application because of the rules that are governed by MTGS. It must be PM'd to the Guild Leader.
All information provided marked in the PRIVATE area of the application are kept private and not given out UNLESS necessary (such as a BTR) AND requested by a moderator/administrator.

Amendment 1: No trading/bartering/brokering is allowed in the guild area. This must be done either by PMs or in the Market Street area of the forums. Amendment 2: Any specials/deals that members wish to offer to other guild members must be listed in their Trade/Sales threads and not here. Doing this, however, on a constant basis, without other substantial post data may get you a warning/infraction for spam.
I, for one, am glad to be a part of this I'm a very active trader/seller on this site and I look forward to discussing the practices of doing so.
One of the practices that I've always tried to adhere to is "trading up". It seems that the definition of that policy is somewhat confusing for some though. I'd like to hear what members' opinions on what that means to them.
Welcome to the Clans!

@jlm--When I talk about trading up, it usually means including a premium of sorts when trading for harder-to-get cards/very movable Legacy staples in deals involving newer or less powerful/liquid cards. I believe we did this to some degree when I traded for your Mox Jet, where I was trying to include about an extra $35-40 in fetch lands and other goodies as compensation for the power aspect of the deal.
Most times, people will want to trade up when they have a significant amount of standard cards and they are looking for Legacy cards, at which point they will typically overshoot the value of whatever they're trading for to make the deal more appealing for the person giving up the Legacy cards. Anyone else have any other experience in trading using a similar method?

I rarely do or have, but depending on what is being traded I can see it happening. For instance, like you stated, you are trading for power, so adding in a few things to sweeten the deal.
I think someone did this to me (I hadn't fully paid attention), but they tossed in a few extra cards for my Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas. I'm sure overall they got the better end of the deal, but since they had what I wanted, I felt it fair enough.
Most of the time though, I try to keep it about even and I often get more cards than what I send (except this last trade, I am sending a 3 for 1).
Speaking of which, how do you base your cards? Price v. Usability is mostly my take on it (If I need a card, then I'm willing to go a bit lower).
EDIT: Oh, and House Dimir is a guild friend.
EDIT: I am waiting for word on whether or not I am allowed to put links to the guild members trade/sell lists on the OP of the guild thread. *Crosses fingers*. Mind you this will ONLY be for guild members if we're allowed to do it.
Yes, I understand that it may be a bit before we get a response in regards to that, which is fine. I am just happy that we have a place of our own! Hopefully we'll expand even more and have a lot more going on, but we're in the baby stages right now!
Yay for cookies! You can always get friended with us with cookies! LOL
Yes J, that's what I'm referring to. When there is a trade from standard to eternal, I consider it trading up, and feel that a premium is necessary. For some reason I've encountered members lately that don't understand that concept. They think a Jace TMS for duals is a trade-down. It just blows my mind...
I would prefer to have duals over JTMS. Duals you can use in REALLY any deck whereas JTMS you would have to splash blue. I'm always happy to take duals over other cards (except my Traps, which I still need 3x Archive Traps and a few others).
PS - I have no idea why I'm on such a trap trip right now, but I'll be working through lists to see if I can find anymore that I might need.
i'll keep my eyes open for archive traps when i trade tomorrow.
@jlm- trading up- awesome! essential trading skill. trading down is an important skill too, but yeah i'd almost always rather trade up. it's complicated though. trading duals/staples up is tough for me. giving up liquid comodoties for a niche expensive card can burn. i've felt that burn bad before and learned from it (thats what she said).
a topic i've wanted to discuss, and a topic i think is important for traders:
card cleaning.
i got some underground seas for a significant discount recently in a trade because they weren't in the best of condition. they were dirrrrttttyyyyyyy. and played. but mostly dirty. knowing the difference is important, and difficult. i'm still learning. i cleaned em up with a moist q tip and i swear i could see the money signs shining off them. they look worlds better now and can trade like the champs they are. since then i've cleaned up some more duals to the same result.
this topic warrants further discussion. i just started doing this recently, and was curious if anyone else practices card cleaning. maybe yall got some pro tips to share.
My concept is to never touch a card with anything wet. Last time I attempted that (on a Dingus Egg, cheap I know, but still..) it ended up soaking in the side and I had put a single drop of water on it!
Either way, I am sure there are better ways of doing it, but I think that if it can be done safely, it'd also be a great way to determine fakes as well (I have heard of this being a type of test).
I wish you had pictures of before and after as it'd be great to see!
EDIT: This is for the Merchant Guild Members - We have a person wishing to join the guild by the name of him88himself. What say you on their joining? Please remember to view their iTrader profile and their regular profile. This voting aspect shall be open for 1 week (7 days) or once all votes are cast.

I hear it a good amount too, sigh. Just can't seem to get the Jace trades that I hear about, oh well, I've traded away almost all my Jaces at this point, will pick them up later on.
Yes J, that's what I'm referring to. When there is a trade from standard to eternal, I consider it trading up, and feel that a premium is necessary. For some reason I've encountered members lately that don't understand that concept. They think a Jace TMS for duals is a trade-down. It just blows my mind...
My vote for him88himself is NO. We had a trade a few months ago where he "forgot" to include one of the cards in the shipment. I PM'd him about it, he acknowledged the mistake, and agreed to send it right away. That was ~4 months ago. It never came. I eventually obtained one through another member. I didn't bother opening a BTR because it was less than a dollar value, and I didn't think it was a deliberate act as much as an absent-minded one. Either way though, it is not a display of good trading practices. I certainly wasn't going to hound him repeatedly because that's not my responsibility, and would require more energy than the card's worth.
@Dresden: I'm with you and jlm in that I would never seriously consider a trade in which someone tried to claim that a Jace is better than (or even on the same playing field as) dual lands. I was fortunate enough to trade mine away for various staples, and I wasn't even getting the better end of the deal most of the time. Makes things easier when you don't even regularly play blue
@Blood Lightning: I have tried a similar tactic on some really shoddy-looking dual lands before, except that I used a microfiber cloth. In those cases, though, I was not priming them to be sold--I just wanted the ones I was using to look better. I even had a person from whom I recently bought a Savannah tell me that he would clean it before sending, and he did an excellent job! I also appreciated that he was up front about it.
@PsiJet: When I am attempting to value my cards (your query from the previous page), I am really doing more than just undercutting magiccards.info, even if that's all anyone notices on my sales list I'm more likely to cut a deal with someone on a card that I have no plans to use or that hasn't seen play in my decks for awhile, which works out great for me in three ways. 1) It attracts more business to my page, 2) It increases the likelihood of repeat buyers, and 3) I can get cards in the hands of people who will appreciate and use them! That's what it's about for me.
Similarly, I will not hesitate to use things on my sales list in trades, and I am always happy to overtrade for something that I need for a deck or want for sentimental reasons. Always. It's the least I can do for someone taking the time to deal with me, and I think it's a fine way to perpetuate good will on the site and express my excitement about the benefits of trading here and having access to so much.
Yeah J, I can say from personal experience that you definitely do go the extra mile as far as good trading practices go
For the cleaning, I have used a dried-out lens-cleaning cloth with great success before. They're soft enough to not scratch or mar the surface. Just make sure they're bone-dry before using them haha.
@Juicy_J - I noticed that! I checked your prices against MagicCards.Info and noticed that you undercut them quite a bit. Not that *I* was complaining or anything, LOL.
@jlm - Your notation about him88himself has been noted and recorded for our records, as has the other vote that I have gotten. Next time PM me though, lol. On that note, would you be willing to enter a trade with him to have him prove his worthiness to you? We could put him on probation until he does say, 3 to 5 trades with a member, or come up with something. (Feel free to post ideas in the thread on that, I am interested what others might think on it as well).
On a lighter note, I was looking at something funny and ALMOST got some just for the sheer chaos of it all: ULine bubble mailers. I about died when I saw these. LOL
On a lighter note, I was looking at something funny and ALMOST got some just for the sheer chaos of it all: ULine bubble mailers. I about died when I saw these. LOL
I have to say that I think those are atrocious. I can actually visualize my mailman outwardly mocking me if I were ever to receive something shipped in one of those.
I had a question for some of the other members of the guild regarding bubble mailers, though. Where do you typically get yours, and how reasonably priced are they? I ask because currently, I settle for the .87 4x7 ones that Walmart frequently stocks, and I'm wondering if I could do better. I am far from a store, so I have never purchased in bulk or anything like that. I was just hoping for some insight from the rest of you.
ULine has it to where you can buy them in bulk (100 for like $47 or something like that). Now currently I buy them from the post office, but I'm going to be changing that and buy in bulk so that way it's less expensive in the long run. (It costs me about $3.25 w/mailer + shipping) when it could be dropped lower.
Oh, on a side note - Dresden has had a standing invitation to the guild and has been accepted into the guild as a member.
