They got rid of tournament packs, so I think basics-in-boosters is WotC's method of getting basic lands out there.
Set does look fun in limited, wish I could justify another box to draft! As it is, pressing it to make it to the prerelease. . . seems like a lot of house projects coming to a head at the moment, & then we were sideswiped by a taxi, & while we may end up getting it all fixed on insurance, I don't want to sit around waiting for the insurance to decide that's the case - can't stand listening to that awful scraping sound from the wheel bouncing against the now-deformed front end
Reading Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee it's killing me. I knew the Native Americans had it bad as settlers pushed westward, but this is galling. America's history is damned shameful

I wonder what the cost benefit is with getting rid of tournament packs. Packaging maybe or perhaps they didn't sell as well. Too bad, I liked tournament packs and I hate getting land in a booster.

You could always work on house projects like my dad does. Ten years ago my family found that the tile in the shower had been letting water leech through for years. Sheetrock was like putty and the wood frame behind the wall and the wood in the floor was half rotten. My dad figured it'd be cheaper on the labor to do the repairs himself. And so he slowly started repairs. Ten years later and well...he installed the new toilet over the christmas holiday. High hopes that this'll be the year he finishes it.
Sorry about the car. Hopefully they make the Taxi driver's insurance buy you a new one. Nobody got hurt?

Not our most shinning moment. Seems our history is riddled with all sorts of examples of these. I've even heard stories about Hitler designing some aspects of his final solution on how we eradicated Indians.
Not sure how we're dealing with them now is any better. Can't really generalize, but it seems the majority of reservations were pushing near 30% unemployment, and that was before the economic crash. Several tribes are pushing casino's as a make or break gamble of desperation while others still get pushed around as easy targets. The nuclear dump proposals in Utah were all on Indian reservations. Rumor has it that the corporation got several tribal members to "speak for" the entire tribe in favor for the nuclear dump when they really didn't have the power to do so. At least thats what the protesters were saying. Wouldn't put it past corporations to play dirty anyway.
It's also a pain working with reservations. Just so many different rules and regulation that must be considered that confuse several issues. Less red tape to get things done though, so they have that going for them. Makes it easier to work for them than with them.

Aww Brian *hug* Everything will be ok! At least that's what I'm told.
Talore: Glad everything didn't go south as you suspected it might.
Daggs: I feel like the limited tournament is going to whoever cracks Blightsteel Colossus, that guy is a nightmare! Also, the old school U/W deck I played ran Serra Angel and Winter Orb, with Icy Manipulator. I'm not sure if that still works, I think it does? but yeah it ran the diamonds (the mana artifacts) and the board control with Serra for the win.

Whenever I need to fume I go hiking or camping. I say this is a perfect time to explore that nature whatever you're living by. Bring the fishing poles and see what you get. Watch the flames though, fire season over there if'n I don't miss my guess and that Eucalyptus is a nightmare to fight.
Daggs: I feel like the limited tournament is going to whoever cracks Blightsteel Colossus, that guy is a nightmare!
Bah, I don't think I'd even consider him a bomb. Costs 12 to play, standard deck has 17 land. So on average you wouldn't be able to play him until turn 21. How many games last that long? Sure I'll play him if I get him on the off chance that I get stalled out long enough to play it, but I doubt you'd ever get the chance to play it. And that's not considering the plethora of artifact removal. Of course if there are some interesting hyjinks that accelerate the colossus, well thats all the better. Still, I consider every other mythic, and many rares, more of a bomb than Blightsteel Colossus.

Thats too bad Ria, i seem to recall you liking that job. I hate it when jobs turn sour. Some of the best jobs I've ever had got spoiled due to coworker interactions.
Are there a lot of options in your field around there? No need to move or for ridiculous commutes and what knot?
I think I'm going to force myself to go to the prerelease. The cards seem interesting and I'm liking how this prerelease you are forced to choose mirran or phyrexia which will determine the cards you get. I'll be going for Phyrexia. Do miss Yawgmoth.
Do ya'll remember when I got scammed by some stupid internet movie site? Well I disputed the charge of $40 to my account even though it was mentioned in the fine print of the user agreement, of which I did hit accept. I didn't think I had a case, I mean since when was "nobody reads those anyway" an excuse for not knowing what was in a contract virtual or otherwise? Well USbank went to bat for me and they figured that they website was a scam and I did have a case, so they ruled in my favor. That was a neat little turn of events.
Cheers,
Daggertooth
Edit: Looks like I may have been a bit too optimistic in my jobs outlook. I've always said that there are plenty of jobs in my field even in this recession, though they would be seasonal...Permanent jobs have always been hard pressed to get. The majority of jobs in my field are alphabet... USDA, BLM, USFS, USNP, USGS, BIA, NRCS, and the like. Well with the huge deficits the government has been rightly suggesting huge budget cuts. Problem is that many of the suggestions will directly affect my options. I know that on the far extreme right they've talked about cutting USDA by 30% and the USDI by 78% (these will never happen, but the fact that it was even proposed...even by the tea party...is worrisome). That's budget slashing the largest employers in my field (USDA has the Forest Service while USDI has National Parks and The Bureau of Land Management).
Squeezing from the other side are veterans and the scaling down the wars. Now I'm all for supporting veterans, they've done a service that demands respect...and I've never been too keen on these wars..., but their return does smash my options due to veteran preference. Think of it this way, if I with a masters degree apply for a high level job and the only competition is a high school drop out veteran, I lose the job. Simple formula dictates that. I don't care if its fair or not, it just is what it is, but it does make me have to plan accordingly.
So things are winding down and Its looking like my options are significantly reduced from what I envision going into this two years ago. It is interesting... I'll survive...I always do. Figure I'll just do what I always do and apply for everything and anything. I just can't be as carefree with my options since bills make it a little harder to break even...plus I think its high time I strive for higher than break even. There are private jobs out there, but I suspect with all the layoffs in my field there will be a huge demand for them.
I'll find out more about this and how serious it is in a week or so. I'll be at a national meeting with the who's who in my field. I suspect the Alphabet folk will be nervous. Heck they're nervous in a good year due to the government's inability to pass a budget.
...
...
I suppose a Ph.D would keep me out of the jobs market a few more years...let things settle down a little more...would also delay payment on my student loans which is always good. Is a PhD suppose to be a strategy to ease economic and financial pressure?

The house of an elderly murder victim had been broken into before her death, say Adelaide police.
Detectives are working to find clues into who killed 87-year-old Seacliff woman, Anne Redman.
She was found in the backyard of her Yacca Road home late on Wednesday afternoon by family members.
Superintendent Grant Moyle said there had been a breaking.
"We have with the cooperation of relatives established there doesn't appear to be anything stolen from the home," he said.
"The motive is still not clear nor is there any suspect but we are of the view that Mrs Redman was not the victim of a sexual assault."

Just got back from the prerelease and I am exhausted. Doesn't help that for some reason I got only two hours of sleep last night. We'll see how long I have to stay up before I'm done with this poster.
I chose phyrexia because I feel that they are superior. Infect adds a whole new dimension to the game where damage is a resource and a chump blocker is an efficient weapon. Creates a whole new dynamic in the game. My sealed pool was solid enough for a Green/Black deck. It did have Tempered Steel and Sunblast Angel in white, but I didn't feel like I had enough solid white cards to splash it.
Bombs were Phyrexian Vatmother, Phyrexian Crusader, Bonehoard, and to a lesser extent Psychosis Crawler. Bellowing Tanglewurm also combowed off some of my lesser green creatures in a way that severely beat down a few opponents. My removal was basic, Grasp of Darkness, Pistus Strike, 2x Acid Web Spider, and a Viridian Corrupter made for few options in case I saw some giant bombs.
Highlights:
Turn 3 Phyrexian Vatmother equiped with +1/+1 and hits for 5 on turn 4. Opponent has phyrexian also and poisons me up to 7 counters with leathal next round. Drops an artifact creature and a 1/1 blocker to handle my Vatmother while I bleed to death. I top deck Viridian Corrupter, pop off his artifact creature then Grasp of Darkness his remainding blocker...hitting for another 5. Two swings and he's dead.
Untamed Might on any infect sneaking through the defense is sick. Mid-game I could easily +5/+5 or more.... Won several games like that.
Phyrexian Crusader against anything is awesome.
Bone Hoard on anything with infect is hilarious.
Phyrexian Vatmother against other Phyrexian decks is dangerous. a few -1/-1 counters on it and your just sucking damage each turn. Killed myself once with it and was on a desperate 3 life countdown with it when I pulled off a win.
I won with actual damage once with Psychosis Crawler swinging as a 7/7 each turn. The opponent even Black sunned my side and I was still able to toss on some green beasts to finish him off.
Lost one Round against blue. I was winning with a Bellowing Tanglewurm and Molder Beast combo. Leathal damage would be next turn, but he control magicked my tanglewurm giving it infect. I couldn't deal with my own creature and eventually lost. Game 2, I played Tanglewurm again and he plays that same danged control magic for the game.
Over all I had a blast and went 5-1 for 3rd place. Prize payout was 6 packs.
Cheers,
Daggertooth

I know I quit magic, but I've decided to make an EDH deck my pet project. Wont be done for a while as most my commons and uncommons are scattered all over the place.
It's just a deck concept at this point, but I'd like to make a draw engine style deck with Glissa as my general.
Basic idea is having about 10% of the deck be cheap cantrip artifacts or land fetchers. We're talking uzra's Bobble, horizon spellbomb, and the like. With Glissa my hope is to make those cheap cantrips somewhat recurring for solid card draw.
Another basic idea is to run Psychosis Crawler as the champion of this deck. Any creature search and fetch will look for that. Simply because it can abuse card drawing. Would also be mean with Teferri's puzzle box.
The rest of the deck will be interesting artifacts and mass removal.
Would love to use Jolrael, Empress of Beasts or Natural Affinity with mass removal.
I'll also be running Adventurers' Guildhouse....um...because I can. I'm not sure how banding works though. Are abilities like flying rendered useless if some in the band don't have flying?
How's that for a deck idea all you EDH folk?
And before you worry ria....those six packs I won came with a Glissa and massacre worm.

Thanks. By the way how have you been doing. I remember you talking about playing some more magic and stuff?
I'm slightly slowing down my panic busy status. Poster is done, resume has been spruced up, and I'm working on a print out of the data for those who want more detail. I even got a business card made...well if the copy center gets it right, they've been struggling with it. It has a picture, which is supposed to be a a cardinal sin, but I don't think it's half bad.

Not much atm, kinda cooled on the collecting for the minute until my job pulls its head out of its arse but I'd be interested in either version, I like to have all the artworks.

Sounds fun. You may want to include a few ways to force an opponent to have a creature (Forbidden Orchard-style) so you can ensure an easy target for the engine.
If a flyer/otherwise unblockable is banded with something that a defending player could block, then yeah, the whole band gets blocked.

Ya got Progenitus? I wouldn't mind getting my hands on that one. It'd be the non-prerelease one if we traded. I like the prerelease card. Though they are both neat, and the non-prerelease looks like the Queen of Blades.

Cool. I'll have to keep those in mind as I build the deck up. Like I said before, I've got none of the pieces I need.
I could help with that if'n ya want. But only cause I just barely went to the career center here at my school and they hammered my resume for an hour. I'd been using my resume for years and figured it wasn't half bad. I only went to the career center on the off chance that they might could help. When they asked how long I would need I told them maybe five to ten minutes. An hour later I left that place with my resume so marked up with ink that my brain nearly exploded. Took me about two hours after that just to implement all their suggestions. Gotta say that compared to my new resume my old one looks like crap.
I've got it all stapled with my business card paperclipped to it. Not sure if thats all professional, but should work.
I'm off tomorrow to the Society of Range Management's national meeting. There I will present my poster and hobnob with all the who's who of range. Lots of hiring on the spot so I've got 200 business cards and 30 resume's set up. Here's hoping I come home with an awesome job. ....And please, let there be no temptations of low paying exotic middle of nowhere jobs that I'll "have" to take just for the fun of it....

Well, it is what it is. I think the original handled tech better, & Legacy seriously suffers if you think about the plot too much & don't just sit back & enjoy the visual spectacle. There are a few choice moments that make me wish the entire movie played out to the same vibe (the scene where Sam goes to the arcade & Journey plays is just, I dunno, it's perfect though). They totally failed to get David Bowie on board to play himself & got some guy who doesn't quite pull it off & looks like a clown instead.
At least it sets up Part 3 decently. . .

Spooky political mobs are always spooky, even when I agree with what is being said. Mobs give me the fear.

So I was wearing ZOMG (yes, we call him Zo-my-gosh, goes well with the O-MAN! don't you know) & bussing down to pick O-MAN from school. Always a fun trip 'cos the little guys enjoy public transport. I've got ZOMG strapped on with a baby carrier, neon-green for visibility, & the O-MAN is on my shoulders. We're two car lengths from the bus stop, & I can see the bus coming, so I start waving at it as we approach the bus stop. Driver sees me, makes eye contact, & just keeps going Great, at least half an hour before the next one. . .
Luckily a couple on a side street saw it happen, & since they happened to have double child seats for their grandchildren, pulled up to us & offered us a ride. They dropped me at the train station, in time for me to see the bus we would have caught approach. I made sure the driver saw me again (hard to miss when I'm dayglow), & he did a double-take, the stupid look on his face the perfect payoff

Well range folk tend to be a touch conservative when it comes to the environment. All about hunting, outdoor use, self reliance, and the working man. There's variability of course, but for the most part conservation and sustainable use is a general goal. Thats where I stand hand in hand with them.
I'm not 100% certain where the average range folk stand on wolves, but I do know that those that hate them are loud. Wolves are an emotional topic that more often than not can get someone fighting mad. There are logical reasons for the anger though. Wolves eat game and cattle which have a direct and immediate cost. They also reduce cattle birth rates, reduce weaning weights, reduce effectiveness of cow dogs, reduce pasture utilization and effectiveness of pasture rotations, and cause cattle to run through fences. The government does have a compensation program, but it is estimated that between 8-10 cows are taken by wolves for each cow thats paid for.
On the other hand the presence of wolves have been shown to increase Aspen and Willow populations, increase beaver and water foul populations, increase pronghorn populations, increase fish populations, and restore river system health. So plenty of real reasons to have them.
Theres a balance here and I feel that a compromise shouldn't be too difficult. But the whole thing has just gotten way too politicized and polarized. The last three speakers from last Thursday are what I would consider part of the problem.
I might have agreed with those ranting speakers, at least with some of the basic themes, but their message was lost in loud angry rhetoric that I don't think had any place in an international convention. One quoted the constitution of the USA, stopping after every sentence to explain what it meant. He quoted Socrates, Plato, and anyone and everyone who stated that big government is bad. Tying Hitler and Stalin in with the illegal and evil act of wolf reintroduction. Another ranted about how some of his science was right but ignored in the past, which meant that everything coming out of his ass was gold and everyone else was wrong and/or in bed with government conspiracies and corrupt media. They also ranted against academia as part of the problem. Directly accusing the science, and probably some of the scientists in the room, of fabricating their data in order to appease special interest groups.
It was interesting...in a morbid self abusing sort of way. I'm hoping my fellow range folk weren't just eating that stuff up. But then I consider the rants from Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck, and Ann Coulter and the like to be just as bad...and I have friends who love them. This despite the friend being an otherwise rational being. Hmmm...maybe I'm the one a bit off my rocker...

Gah... the illogical radicalism of that kind is a plague. It's always a burden in conversation when pundits are so prevalent in society. Aside even from the politics of species reintroduction, don't they realise that we've already ☺☺☺☺ed with nature enough, and that trying to restore the balance is at least worth considering? I tend to draw the line between 'person worth listening to' and 'windbag' when said person can't even contemplate or acknowledge the merits of their opposition. Cheers for keeping your sanity, Daggs.
I've started to do a bit of blogging, with the link in my signature, if you're bored and care to read it. It's mostly about philosophy, music, and religion. I figured I was at a point where there were far too many thoughts and ideas in my conscience at once to be healthy, and I've decided to write some of them down to sort of ground myself. I've only written two posts so far, but it felt almost cathartic or relieving to commit them to a data format. Besides, my nonfiction writing hasn't kept up with my prose and poetry study, so it's good practice.
Moved again today. But at least it should be the last time in awhile(signed a 2 year lease, house isn't going to be foreclosed as far as I'm aware of, etc).
My work looks like they're going to let us work 45-50 hours/week(normally I'm only scheduled for 30) for the foreseeable future, so I'll definitely be taking advantage of that. I've kind of given up on making commission at this job, which is hard for me..I've always been great at inbound sales..but just getting $12/hour doesn't seem so bad when I'm getting lots of hours. Talena has decided to go back to work also, and starts a job in a week(was supposed to be Monday, but her background check hasn't come back yet). Having more income will make it easier to rectify some financial matters that have been plaguing us for the last couple of years, and the lawyer representing her disability case tells us that even if she goes back to work, she'll still get the 3-4 years of backpay she is owed.
I'm only about 2.5 miles from my work, so I'm planning to start riding a bike to/from also, to lose some weight. I've been depressed for so long that it doesn't feel like I can change much about it, but at least I can influence some small things.
Just thought I should share since things are looking up a little. Been awhile.

Why on earth did I sign up for six classes this semester?
In related news, I won't be making this pre-release, so if any of you dudes do, please pick up an extra Glissa, Bad Girl to trade me
Are there a lot of options in your field around there?

Pre-release this weekend! I'm looking forward to crackin some packs! Going to the Phyrexian route...that's fer sure!

Daggertooth

Homebrew is creating Magic.
Are you a pilot or a creator??
How much do you value her?
Cheers,
Daggertooth
Edit: Ria, is your heart set on the prerelease card or just a copy of glissa?

Sounds fun. You may want to include a few ways to force an opponent to have a creature (Forbidden Orchard-style) so you can ensure an easy target for the engine.
If a flyer/otherwise unblockable is banded with something that a defending player could block, then yeah, the whole band gets blocked.
Neat, although I think they got your address wrong
Time for me to join the resumé-reworking crew :/

Daggertooth

Cool. Now are you thinking of me because I've got the personality and strength of a rolling thunderstorm, or because you picture me as having a tendency of getting stuck on top of mountains in thunderstorms?
Ria: I've not seen Tron. I take it that its not worth my time?
I'm still in Montana. Going to head back tomorrow. Overall a successful conference. Loads of great topics were covered and I really wish I could have seen more.
Spent all day today at the wolf section. For the most part it was informative, but I was surprised to find myself much too liberal for the last three talks. I swear it was like a teaparty rally complete with rants against big government and references to Hitler.
Heading home tomorrow...yay 10 hour drive.

At least it sets up Part 3 decently. . .
Spooky political mobs are always spooky, even when I agree with what is being said. Mobs give me the fear.
At least you escaped with your life!
Indeed. Wonder why he didn't pick you guys up.

Daggertooth

I've started to do a bit of blogging, with the link in my signature, if you're bored and care to read it. It's mostly about philosophy, music, and religion. I figured I was at a point where there were far too many thoughts and ideas in my conscience at once to be healthy, and I've decided to write some of them down to sort of ground myself. I've only written two posts so far, but it felt almost cathartic or relieving to commit them to a data format. Besides, my nonfiction writing hasn't kept up with my prose and poetry study, so it's good practice.
