Watched "man woman wild" the other day. They were somewhere in mexico in what looked like the sonoran desert, creosote flats. I only watched a bit of it, rolled my eyes too often to take the show seriously then changed the channel. Maybe I should have given them more credit, but they were going around in the heat of the day and the gal had her shirt unbuttoned enough to show plenty of flesh. Right...you want to show flesh when in an emergency situation and being baked by the sun. They tried drinking pee and other survival techniques...even killed a very small rattler for food. They dabbed the blood on their tongue so not to waste the water....probably lost more moisture from opening their mouth than they got from the single drop or two of blood. Bah.... Too hokey for me to deal with, though maybe I should have at least watched the full show or multiple shows before judging it. Seems that there are a lot of these "wilderness" reality shows nowadays.
School starts Monday. Yay?
I've noticed some of these too... I think one of the reasons is because so many people are completely disconnected from nature, with this movement form the country to the cities that we've seen in many countries across the years. It's kind of funny, because paganism is also on the rise, so I don't know how that fits in. 'Suppose more people are feeling the disconnect, coupled with the decline of Christianity's dominance of western culture. Of course I'm no sociologist, but meh.
High School starts up in two weeks here in Canada. Heh, it's grade 12, the last grade, so I'll be a senior :cool2:. Incidentally it's my birthday in a week and a half, kind of sucks that it marks the end of summer.
Hey, this is my 1000th post! What should my custom title be?
Hmmm....guess I wasn't that old then either. I was probably 13 or something. I did like the movie both 1 and 2. But then I've never seen anything from Pixar that I didn't like. Even shows I was skeptical of like "the Incredibles" and "cars" turned out as terrific movies.
Daggertooth: that whole snake thing kind of scares me, lol. I would be afraid of the snakes in the first place. And then kill it and skin it? Wow... I remember skipping the dissection of a cow's eye as well as the one of a frog in biology class. I found it gross and I couldn't harm any being, no matter dead or alive. But, respect, Dagger. Did you experience any encounters with other (maybe even more dangerous ) species? I'd really like to hear about that.
As I dissected the rattler I tried to remember the various organs (The first one I took had two rats inside it). Of course the most recognizable was the still beating heart. I've heard you can eat them, but figured I shouldn't. They do say that the majority of people killed by rattlers are men...but then they are typically bitten on the arm and are intoxicated at the time. I made sure I was well away from the snakes strike and used a weapon with plenty of reach. Would have been more deadly if I was trying to catch it alive. In fact I've had more deadly encounters from nearly stepping on the critters than trying to catch them.
Not harming any other being is fine depending on how strict you take it. There comes a point where that philosophy removes you from reality in a ridiculous way. Like when PETA protested the president for killing a fly, or when my friend BLOD told me I couldn't swat at a gnat that was biting me. If it ever came to a survival situation you'd best know what to eat...and if it moves it's edible.
Not sure about other deadly animals. A giant centepede put me in the hospital when I was young. Learned not to try to pick those up. Giant Millipede made me nauseous because I forgot to wash off the cyanide after playing with it. I chased a bear once...but I think that was smaller than the alligator kpaca wrestled. Been stalked by a mountain lion a time or two but I'd never really see that coming if one actually decided to take me out. Been surrounded by a pack of coyotes a time or two as well...but then I can't recall anyone ever being harmed by them anyhow. No, I think the rattler is the deadliest thing I've tangled with.
In other news, I just got to meet an amazingly intelligent and beautiful woman. We listen to the same kind of music, we both play magic and share the same priorities in life. Unfortunately, we are seperated by about 700 miles which means that I'm going to a) travel a lot from now on and b) see parts of Germany I haven't seen before (the sothwest to be precise, former zone occupied by the US troops after WW2).
Good luck with that. Long distance relationships are a bit difficult, but if you are in the same country it does help.

If this is what it takes to get people interested in the outside world then I guess more power to these shows. I typically view this disconnect from nature with its relationship to food. Basically food comes from the grocery store and is comprised of the few foods we harvest, both plants and animal. And though this only comprises a small fraction of edible plants and animals any dietary deviation from grocery store standards are viewed as either exotic or just plain gross. I view that as extremely odd. I also view veganism as a bit odd in this way, despite many of their beliefs that they are getting back to nature with a pure vegan diet. Not that vegan diets are good or bad, healthy or unhealthy, we've discussed that...just that vegan diets are not realistic for humans in a natural or survival setting. It's made possible only through our industrial lifestyle.

Well my school bookstore was selling this one textbook for 167$. I went on ebay and found it for 30$. They were also selling another book for 45$. On ebay it was 4$. Always good to shop around, and always good to avoid the student bookstore. So far I've been lucky in that most of the books I need are small english books that only cost 5-20$ and not giant psych textbooks that cost 150+ (I buy these ones online anyway).
The college book industry is basically modern day highway robbery, but without all the excitement of a real highway robbery. Instead of "your money or your life" it's "debit or credit?"

I would like to state some facts here...
As a former college bookstore employee I would like for everyone to be aware that the "Newest Edition" is usually just the same book as the previous edition with the exception that the chapters are in a different order and SOME of the problems are different. If you know someone with an older edition, compare them both and you can probably use the older book.
The only way publishers make money in text books is to make a new edition. The used book market takes away 100% of the New Book market.

It's 100% of a market that should be 'taken away', IMO, because the prices charged for new text books are patently ridiculous, especially considering that you're only going to use the books for such a short term.
Ultimately, no one feels bad when robbers get robbed. And your statement that new editions are really just the old edition reprinted with meaningless changes only reinforces that.
Cyan's point is why I never buy the new core sets. If it is just reprinted, then I've got'em some place.
20 ☺☺☺☺ing books! ...I'd still be all " " even if it were half that! I know so many people that $ through college then can't find work.
..Now they have a "house note" from student loans on their back/credit and can't find a job.
oh, and hi guys.
*Looks @ JJ's avy*
Boy, since leaving us, you've really let yourself go..
Read that story Cyan. Interesting and sad. There are a handful of "uncontacted" tribes out there and its easy to exploit them as they don't have a voice. Happens all over the world. Bruno Manser was a white guy who adopted the Penan tribe way of life and tried to help them out in Borneo. I know the whole "white man comes in and saves indigenous people' theme is overdone many times, but its often the case that the natives don't know where to begin to defend themselves...at least as far as litigation and protests that will be recognized by the outside world. Arrows to the chest only work so far until they are simply out gunned.
Some books are worth money. The ones I plan to use time and time again for reference are worth the $100+ I spend for them. It's just that it seems the majority of books are either too basic or blah to be of reference importance. New editions that are just a revision of chapters are meaningless and a scam, but new editions that have new material can be important. I wish they'd update "Fire Ecology of Pacific Northwest Forests" as it is an excellent book that represents the height of fire science...in 1993. Still relevant, but would be more so if updated. Then there is the professor that writes his own book, requires you to buy it, then gives small updates year by year. Sure in some cases it can be legit, but often its just a money grabbing scheme.
Long day today. Mostly on hold with various entities. First was the IRS where I tried to pay them what I owed them. Seems I owed $384 or so. I sent it months ago...but somehow missplaced a decimal and sent $3.84. I hoped it was an error in my favor but it turned out to be my own mistake. So I tried again. This time I sent it to my tax return of 2009 instead of 2008. Took a bit to sort that one out. I'm really no good with numbers and money it seems.
Second bit was an internet scam I fell into. I was searching for a movie and came upon a website called ireel.com. Since I found it at the end of my search I figured it had the movie I wanted. It was a membership thing so I signed up...then it asked for my credit card info to verify united states citizenship. I knew it was a bad idea, but figured if I moved carefully I'd be okay so why not, so I gave the info and clicked on the 5 day free trial. Well I checked the site and didn't see anything mentioning automatic renewal so figured I was in the clear. Unfortunately I didn't check the user agreement carefully enough. Seems there was a clause in there saying that if I didn't cancel after 5 days they'd charge me $40 for the next month. Got me good for being a fool. I called to cancel and get my money back, of course no refund. So I called my credit card to dispute the charge and let my bank go to bat for me. So here's hoping.
Thing is, no matter how much I complain and whine about the lost $40 I know that it is completely legit...perhaps not moral and a bit sneaky but legal. So I really don't have a leg to stand on. To add insult to injury there really wasn't a good movie hosted. Just a bunch of bland b rated flicks that I wouldn't watch unless sitting home extremely bored. Bah

@Daggs: You'll never see that money again. Talena's best friend makes millions of dollars through those types of businesses, and he rarely has anything charged back against him(unless someone pays by AmEx). It's ☺☺☺☺ing despicable, I can't stand him.
Thats what you get for not reading things properly Daggs It sounds like any "free trial" to me, they all seem to roll on to a paying subscription if you don't cancel in time, its just the way they work as far as i've been aware.

Happens sometimes along with ebay scams, police traps, and getting gas at the first gas station from the highway as opposed to the second. My bank credited my account the money and is awaiting ireel.com's response. I'm hoping my credit company is successful, but Credit card's have their own unscrupulous practices. As witnessed by the fact that congress had to act to prevent credit companies from gouging people. Sure a person doesn't have to have a credit card, but it seems more and more that people need a credit score to get anywhere from home and car loans to cell phones and job applications. Do Debit cards help your credit score at all?

No, debit cards do not help your credit score. Nor do things like paying your phone bill/electric bill/cell phone/RENT, etc. Blah, the credit system here is just..so much nonsense.
Just make sure that if you plan to play Standard, you take out a second mortgage first.
Speaking of a money pit, I bought one of those FTV: Relics sets today. The new art on Sol Ring is incredible, and getting a Mox Diamond is always nice. Also i bought some Batman comics, which always help me unwind.
Anyway, tonight I plan to play EDH from 7-9, then go to an apartment party after. I'm charged with bringing the "refreshments".
Wacky Daggs. I gonna cut your CC in half next time we hang out [/IMG]

I sold those cards from my booster draft way back to Daron. Green and Black Titan, some money elf, a dragon, lich, and a dual U/B land. Sold it for $55. I know I could have probably made more with the three money cards on ebay. But I'd be lucky to hit $65. Helps that Daron is a friend and I'm a bit too lazy and busy to bother individually posting those cards on ebay. That'll cover food for a few weeks.

Well if I recall correctly the CC companies charge each time a transaction is made, so I doubt it would be economical to charge the CC. However, I once put about 15 cents on a credit card.

Figured as much. Though if you don't make those payments they'll send it to a credit agency and your score will go down hard.
The problem I have with credit scores is when it is used as a litmus test for good citizenship, honesty, or other positive characteristic. Something that can go down just by looking at it should not be used like that.
School is already a bit stressful. There's just so much to do and I have doubts that I can do it. At least in a timely manner. I just committed myself to a poster, or even a speech, to a national society next February...the abstract I submitted is assuming the results....since I haven't analyzed them yet. Here's hoping I don't contradict myself.

I was going to go to Golden Ears provincial park for some mountain hiking, but it looks like that's going to be delayed indefinitely. So I'll be (outside) reading, smoking incense, and listening to some viking metal and pagan folk in equal measures
I'm glad that birthdays are kept track of diligently here..
Well, I already check the birthdays to see if any of my clan's birthdays are here, so as long as you don't mind, I would like to continue posting birthday wishes to this clan as well. If it's not appropriate (since it's not my clan) I'll understand.

Hehe, all right then.
The members of [Called] are supposed to be equal; so I guess I have the same authority as the others. I personally don't mind you posting here; the major personalities may have decided that you weren't the right fit for the clan, but I think it's cool to have other people that we know post once in a while, it builds community.

I was joking, I don't care either way. This isn't my official clan, so it's not like I'd have a say even if I did care.
Anyway, college is pretty busy. Schoolwork during the week, partying during the weekend. I might actually sell off the bulk of my Magic collection since there are better things I could be spending my money on. We'll see what happens.
Still watching The Wire, I'm at the beginning of season 4 now. At the end of this month most of my favorite shows come back on tv (Dexter, Stargate, South Park, etc). Can't wait.
Also, where is Dux, I haven't seen that guy on AIM or on here for some time now. Hopefully he didn't get attacked by all his cats......

Cheers,
Daggertooth

Thank you very much Manders, and also a belated happy birthday to you
I was going to go to Golden Ears provincial park for some mountain hiking, but it looks like that's going to be delayed indefinitely. So I'll be (outside) reading, smoking incense, and listening to some viking metal and pagan folk in equal measures
Will add more after dinner. Had classes from 8 until 4 today with few breaks.
My birthday's next Friday, hon. Not belated yet
Well, I already check the birthdays to see if any of my clan's birthdays are here, so as long as you don't mind, I would like to continue posting birthday wishes to this clan as well. If it's not appropriate (since it's not my clan) I'll understand.
Have a great day, all.
