Thanks again to everybody for the warm welcome and the birthday wishes! I'm not sure if the clan is just really friendly or if you're lulling me into a false sense of security before the experiments begin. I had a couple drinks to many on my birthday and so I apologize for not doing this yesterday like I was supposed to. Let's see...
Name: Patrick (Or Pat if you wish. Set is also fine too) Age: 27 Position: Sitting Bats: Right Throws: Like a Girl PlayStation Network ID: FlashBats (add me you want to!) Favorite Magic Stuff: All the colors, Fact or Fiction, Fire/Ice, Skred, Flametonge Kavu, Counterspell, Wrath of God, Swords to Plowshares, Opposition decks and much much more! I tend to just play casual but I keep an eye on all of the formats and give people an intelligent and respectful opponent for testing purposes on MWS fairly often. Other Likes: Mixed-martial arts, video games, science news, documentaries, reading, writing, comic books, swimming, fishing, grilling.
So there's a brief overview, if anybody has anything to ask go for it.
@Pheon: Man, Demon's Souls has been brutal. I'm really enjoying it but I've died more in the two days I've owned this game than I have in entirety of the last two games I've played through (Red Dead Redemption and Batman: Arkham Asylum). Also, if you don't mind me asking, what area of Michigan are you from? I live about an hour or so east of Grand Rapids.

I don't mind, I live in a small city right off of flint.
I know what you mean about demon's souls, I died so many times
I see... we have quite a few July birthdays then! And a few youngsters
Pheon, you'll find that there really isn't much for turning 19. At least, that's what it was like for me. I kinda expect much of the same for my 20th. Maybe Ravus can sympathize with me.
@ Set: We're not exactly ones to post our bios, but the more you know! I've seen you around on the forums here and there, mostly during the 2005-2006 days and then it's like you vanished or something. In any case, I love seeing old faces again :).
I'm younger than everyone...
I'm thirteen. And I'm an apperentice of the Izzet. I'm pretty sure that's like being in your first year of Harvard at thirteen. Us Izzet are pretty damn smart...
What decks does everyone think will be powerful post rotation?
(Scars rotation)
I'm looking to start building a deck now, and have it survive into Scars standard. Not U/W which would be obvious. Maybe some white weenie, or red deck. If more good black cards are spoiled I'd like someform of black. Or Green. Blue... maybe Jace-less? (thirteen year olds have no money)

Now that O-Ring is confirmed to not be in M11, it appears that Jace is going to exert a real vicegrip on the format, especially when Alara block rotates out. You might want to stay away from blue because every blue-based deck starts their 75 with 3-4 Jace and goes from there. Expect UW control to be out in FORCE upon the release of M11.
RDW completely survives into the rotation into Scars, but it has the problem of being ****ed by Kor Firewalker. I like to do a light splash of black for Doom Blade to reliably answer Firewalker and bigger threats that burn can't reliably kill like Baneslayer Angel and co.
I'm working on an Eldrazi ramp deck that has started out as mono white, but it appears to be going to green/white now that Primeval Titan has been spoiled. I'm also really intrigued by Fauna Shaman as a creature in of itself. I loooooove cards that let you play with toolboxes :).
The two cards spoiled on the mothership today are just...
... unbelievable.
And apperently, the new Leylines are a cycle. I'm dancing for joy...
If that wasn't enough for you, the floodgates are really open now for spoilers. I'm actually shocked beyond belief that Brittle Effigy is going for only $.59 on SCG. It's probably one of the better cards in the set as it gives every deck access to a powerful utility effect.
Game 1: He has double Bloodghast, but they idly sit and do nothing as he gets beaten to a pulp with Geopedes. After double Geopedes carve up his life total, I unload all my burn to his face for the win.
Game 2: This time he has a fair amount of removal in Gatekeepers, but I have a Staggershock to help regain some lost card advantage. After the Gatekeepers have been dropped, I play Kargan Dragonlord. He has more vampires, but apparently no more removal as I level him up next turn swing for 4, then max out Dragonlord the turn after that to force a concession. His army of 2/xs really can't do much to race an 8/8 firebreathing flyer taking a butcher knife to his life total.
1-0 (2-0)
Round 2: vs. Grixis
Game 1: I have a slow hand, but it's loaded down with Teetering Peaks and a Goblin Guide and I'm on the play. The singleton Guide backed with Peaks goes the distance as his CiPT lands slow him down in the critical turns of the game and I unload the Staggershocks in my hand to finish him off.
Game 2: He boarded in Flashfreeze against me, which slows me down quite a bit. I get an Obsidian Fireheart to stick though, but I just blaze only one land before he gets a Jace to bounce my Fireheart. When I recast Fireheart, he has Terminate. On his next turn he plays Wrexial, the Risen Deep. I honestly did not see him coming lol. I topdeck more land and shrug as the Spreading Seas clears the way to my life total and my graveyard full of burn.
Game 3: He drops a Vampire Hexmage. No comment. I burn her out EOT with Burst Lightning. I land turn 4 Obsidian Fireheart. He then drops Jace on his turn 4 and decides to use the Unsummon ability to bounce Fireheart. This decision massively backfires on him, as I immediately drop a Goblin Ruinblaster to blow up his Crumbling Necropolis and take out Jace. A second Ruinblaster joins the party next turn to kill his Creeping Tar Pit, and the LD barrage plus the loss of Jace signals the end.
2-0 (4-1)
Round 3: vs. Grixis (another!)
Game 1: He literally has answers to everything I play. Absolutely nothing of mine sticks as he has every single removal spell waiting in his deck to kill it. One Cruel Ultimatum later and I'm looking at an utterly hopeless position as I topdeck my CiPT utility lands.
Game 2: He plays CiPT lands for three straight turns and he pays for keeping the slow hand with a turn 4 kicked Ruinblaster. The loss of his Crumbling Necropolis essentially takes him out of the game as he is massively color starved. Pretty easy win as a Kargan Dragonlord comes in for mop-up duty.
Game 3: He mulls into a faster hand for him, but with very few answer spells. Sea Gate Oracles and Calcite Snappers are nice, but I have double Ruinblaster to wipe out his Necropolis and Creeping Tar Pit. By the time he can recover, I have an Obsidan Fireheart blazing out his lands, and creatures to throw to the Consuming Vapors he has in his hand. Fireheart beats through his creatures and he dies to his 4/4 body and a combination of blaze counters.
3-0 (6-2)
Round 4: vs. Wg aggro (it actually was pretty effective)
Game 1: He has *quadruple* Path to Exile, taking out practically everything I could muster out. I don't topdeck any of my Firehearts or Dragonlords as I get walloped by Elsepth. Stoneforge Mystic + Behemoth Sledge also adds insult to injury.
Game 2: Another insane draw for him. This time, it's turn 2 Kor Firewalker, turn 3 Kor Firewalker, and 2 Celestial Purges ready for the Fireheart and Dragonlord I manage to cast this game. Really, really frustrating to say the least.
3-1 (6-4)
We don't have a top 8 due to the small number of players at the store and because everything's closing down (the store I play at is in a shopping mall, so we're at the mercy of their hours). My tiebreakers get me 4th, just short of the Anathemancer promo.
I've had a good run with RDW and I really enjoy playing the deck since I like red a lot and I loooooove the combination of explosiveness + threat density, but it's time to move on to the Eldrazi control deck I've been working on that should be nice for the post-M11 metagame. At least I won't have to deal with people taking in over half their sideboards against me each game 2/3 lol.
This is a friendly reminder for everyone who's still interested in contributing to Clan Mafia and has yet to post in the QuickTopic to do so (or let me know if you failed to get the link).
Unfortunately for me, people have gone to take drastic measures as to maindeck Kor Firewalker mainly against me. I don't think I'll be playing RDW for a little bit, so I won't be getting the joy of blazing out people's lands with my Chinese Obsidian Firehearts.
That's rough. Good to know that you have other options, though.
I'll be playing Eldrazi ramp for the upcoming M11 metagame, as I have done preliminary testing and it's actually kinda shocking how some decks just fold right then and there to an Eldrazi titan. I'm glad it won't be much longer until my Eldrazi Temples come in the mail.
My friend JP plays a WU Tap-Out/Eldrazi Ramp hybrid on and off at FNM with good results.
Thanks for the welcome everybody! I look forward to being part of the clan. I'll do a bit of a write up tomorrow, promise. Today is my birthday so I'm gonna play some Demon's Souls and have some drinks. Cheers!

Fog, Cultivate and Sylvan Ranger seem like great cards to run, too. Fauna Shaman just seems too good to be true. It's a bear that makes Vengevine completely unstoppable. Oh, and it has an uber-relevant creature type to boot. Absurd!
Leyline of the Orrery looks like soooooo much fun. It's going in my EDH decks for sure, I hope there's a use for it in standard.
It might see play in SBs for the control mirror or even MD in some wonky combo decks. I expect its value to be driven primarily by its casual applications, though.

It seems like a fine card for control decks that aren't in the colors with good spot removal (URG), but I wouldn't immediately label it as "one of the better cards in the set."

You've gotta know when it's time to say goodbye and move on.
If you get wrecked by PW-heavy decks while running Eldrazi Ramp, just remember that you could have won on turn five with RDW.
Instead of going to FNM, I went with two female friends to a sushi restaurant on the other side of town for dinner. The waitress was pretty cute and seemed to be checking me out so the girls convinced me to write my number down for her to pick up. No call yet.

That's why you resort to All is Dust! Though it's going to be reeeeeeeally annoying when I'll be having to deal with Mana Leak come M11 to get AiDs resolve. Thank god for the Eldrazi titans being pseudo-counterspell proof, and Emrakul just flipping the bird to everyone overall.
On that note, AiDs is probably the best acronym/shorthand for a card EVER. How do you kill planeswalkers? Give them AiDs. Mythic sitting behind Dauntless Escort to keep their board afloat? Give them AiDs. Indestructible elves via Eldrazi Monument smirking at you? Given them AiDs. Elsepth's ultimate got you down? Give your opponent's board AiDs.

That sounds like you had a great time though! If it makes you feel any better, I'm single right now and I'm looking for a sweet girl to hook up with. A couple of my ex-GFs weren't exactly too happy that I played MTG among other things.
I have found my sweet girl. I have a girlfriend. She is quite nice and is fine with me playing magic. It's a nice relationship.
Is it just me, or does M11 seem like the most powerful core set ever! It has tons of sweet rares and mythics like the Titan cycle, The Leyline Cycle, Nantuko Shade etc.

Besides Alpha and Beta of course. I meant sets that had edition in their name and onward.
Alpha and Beta were technically called Limited Edition Alpha and Limited Edition Beta, respectively, which makes Unlimited Edition make more sense
But yeah I know what you mean.
But in that line of thinking, you should take a look at 6th edition. The 2ndleveltutors, Flash, etc.
I find myself wondering why they're reprinting Leyline of the Void but making new Blue, Red and possible Green ones, and we don't know yet about the white.
So is it just me or is UB control going to be ridiculous post rotation? Use Jace's brainstorm ability to setup good Bob on a stick pulls, and with the shade and the lich for winning with, and all the normal blue stuff, the deck could be good. The only issue is what artifact do you run to ensure that you can get the lich out? Prophetic Prism? Crystal Ball?
The new Howling Mine still fits the curve for monored, which makes me happy. And the fact that you can control when the draw happens, your chances of getting 2-for-oned are drastically lower than with howling mine. Combustion also gives monored a huge tool in the form of destroy target baneslayer angel. Not to mention monored's new exile target Kor Firewalker in the form of Battle Effigy,

I would really like to become a member, but first a test subject, of [the Izzet]; they are my favorite clan in Ravnica, as well my favorite color combination. I will post as often as I can as much as I can, proving my worth to the clan. If you could add me to the test subjects, it would be greatly appreciated.
I got pretty much the same thing to say. I want to be a part of the clan, especially since you don't have a high mage of electromancy (my specialty), but will go through the steps to become a member. My computer is being buggy though, so It won't let me add this to favorites for some reason...:-/
I have to warn you guys though, I'm leaving in a few months and will not be able to use a computer for 2 years. My passion for MTG will not diminish, but posting here will become difficult.
Also, contributing to actual conversation, I think they made Sun titan too powerful compare to the others, but I personally haven't taken too many peeks at the new set. I like being surprised. I like Hellkite, though.

Combust is a great answer to Baneslayer Angel, and I don't expect Kor Firewalker to be all that popular after M11 unless RDW becomes Tier One.

Fauna Shaman just seems too good to be true. It's a bear that makes Vengevine completely unstoppable. Oh, and it has an uber-relevant creature type to boot. Absurd!

But in that line of thinking, you should take a look at 6th edition. The 2nd level tutors, Flash, etc.
