Interestingly, there's a number of gay men who think the same way.
What strikes me about this sort of thought is that it's actually quite archaic and heteronormative. Being penetrated as a gay male isn't emasculating (or "rape") because gay sexuality has a completely different dynamic than the gender roles that have been established in heterosexual intercourse. I see no reason to draw such a distinct comparison between sexual roles when the only commonality is the mechanical aspect of penetration
And God Forbid that a woman goes on top or chooses initiate heterosexual sex! She must be some kind of abomination! [/SARCASM]

Good deal. I lived in Cali for several years, and while I don't miss it, I do wish Missouri would adopt some of their attitudes, namely on religion, intimacy, and hygiene.
If consensual sex is rape, then I'm looking at a lot of jail time. I've never quite understood this stance, though I've heard it off and on for years. It seems like a great way to lose progress. Various people and groups have been working on a clear definition of rape for ages, and we basically have one now, and now someone wants to go and mess it up. For what?
"If I do not enjoy X and find it displeasing, then anyone else who doesn't also feel the same way must be sick in the head."
That is the basic mentality. And is the same metality which has left Homosexuals taboo and repressed for so long.
This is why it makes me so mad. They're supposed to be on the side of tolerance.

Yay for California! Though, this November it looks like there will be something voted on by the people of the state that would forbid gay marriage via the state constitution... and since the people of the state banned it once... I bet they'll do it again. So get married asap if you live in California!
And regarding women's studies/gender studies/feminist professors, there are some you may want to take with a bucket of salt. I actually had one who is probably a lot like the one mentioned (in Introduction to Women's Studies, no less). She has her classes read a lot of Catherine MacKinnon, who argues that heterosexuality is rape because our entire society is predicated upon the subordination of women (a previous poster mentioned that gender is a distraction from class struggle; MacKinnon thinks the opposite). Because to her society is sexist oppression of women, women are (theoretically) coerced even when they consciously believe they are giving consent. So... yeah. I disagree with much of what MacKinnon writes. But it wasn't a horrible experience for me to read it, consider her points, and come to my own conclusions.
So of course she had a few devotees amongst the women's studies students (what professor doesn't?), but the majority in that discipline, and in others that gave a damn about feminism (English, psychology, theater) thought of her more as an eccentricity on campus than the be all, end all of what feminism is. It's not that I think this sort of feminism is wonderful and great, but I get pissed off when this sort of image becomes someone's impression of feminism as a whole, rather than the tiny minority that it actually is.
Hmm... I'm going to end it here. I've been finding this conversation really interesting.

Unfortunately, that's the problem with any set of beliefs, the most extreme factions get the most attention. The angry feminists are the ones men, especially straight men, tend to remember and so that is what gets identified with feminism. Unfortunately, that makes feminism itself, which I think is a noble idea, seem like a joke. The righteous indignation of the more extreme feminists makes it virtually impossible to have a rational conversation with them on the subject, which has the eefect of dragging their movement even further to the margins. A friend of mine has a speech he always goes into whenever he meets women's studies major. It's this long diatribe about how women belong in the kitchen and so on. He doesn't believe it, it's just something to say to provoke a frothing at the mouth response. Sad part is it usually works.

Yeah, I think those of us who haven't been here long enough to know who this is are owed some explanation.
