So usually when the conversation gets too serious I'll sweep in with a Hot Guy of the (ahem) Week, but we've already lightened things up and ruined it all. So instead you get a chick. (You're welcome, Bitsy) Presenting the second-ever...
Chick I'd Totally Do
This CITD is the super-*******-hot Gabrielle Union
She's sexy, she's spunky, she looks good dressed up or girl-next-door. She's got it all.
Gabrielle has been acting and modeling since her early 20s. Her first roles were small bit parts on television shows and in teenager movies, appearing in Moesha, 7th Heaven, E.R., Friends, "10 Things I Hate About You", and "She's All That". Oh, and...
Star Trek: Deep Space 9
No, really. Her character name was N'Garen.
Her breakout role was in the surprisingly fun cheerleader movie, Bring It On, as the tough leader of the South Compton squad.
Then she didn't do anything useful for years, so here's more pictures.
And then she was on Ugly Betty for a couple episodes this year. The end.
There's not much in the way of fun facts to list for Ms. Union, but a serious fact of note is that at the age of 20 Union was attacked, beaten and raped at her part-time job at a shoestore. Her attacker later turned himself in and was sentenced to 33 years in prison. She has since become an advocate for victims of sexual assault.

Also, I am a Bring it On fan...aside from the last one...it sucked so bad it almost ruined the awesomeness of #3. Luckily not much can ruin the awesomeness of Claire in a Cheer leader costume.
There is a strain of feminist thought that interprets heterosexual social convention as one based in domination to begin with. There isa reasoning behind it - rape includes cases when one of the sexual partners is subordinate to the other in such a way that it colors the context of the sexual contact. An adult sleeping with a child is wrong for a number of reasons, and one of them is that adults are typically in charge of children. Similarly, prison wardens sleeping with inmates, teachers sleeping with students, and bosses sleeping with secretaries all present different levels of ethical problem. The person "under" the other is disadvantaged because of the nature of their relationship. In most such cases depending on the difference of power, consent can't be fairly given.
The argument is that in patriarchal society, men have a form of socially established power over women, and because of this women are always disadvantaged when sleeping with men, and thus are unable to truly consent to the act.
The point to focus on with that are whether or not the imbalance of privilege is so pervasive as to really make women subordinate to men, subordinate enough to make it a problem. Also, whether or not such an imabalance persists today. Surely there are different levels of privilege, but in a number of cases it doesn't afford actual power over a less privileged person.

She believes any form of penetrative sexual contact is rape, and that gay men are the worst because they dominate and rape each other.
I can see that if one views penetration as being inherently violent or dangerous, or as an invasion of the body of the person being penetrated. This is a very, very arguable position, though.
As for the gay men thing, that brings me to one of my biggest issues with the family of feminist thought. There needs to be a system of unifying principles, general ethics that apply to the specifics of feminist goals. Too often feminist movements lack such principles and seem to have an erratic pattern of morals being used.
Here, we're seeing what is practically the essence of sexism, which is gender essentialism. "Has anal sex" is not a defining property of some archetypal gay man. A feminist should know better than to be so greedily reductionistic about gender. If penetration really is something wrong, then the problem isn't with groups of people who often have pentrative sex, but with the discrete act.
Quote from Tuatha »
See, my Women's & Gender Studies experience was totally different. I took it this year, and my teacher was lovely, and not misandrist (if misandry is even possible in a society as patriarchally-dominated as ours, but that's another thing entirely...) in the slightest.
There can be misandry in a patriarchy; there's no incompatibility. It likely won't be pervasive or treated as normal, and probably won't be institutionalized. Well, really I think there is institutionalized misandry, but it's "man-approved" misandry. Many norms are misogynistic and misandrist, subtly or grossly, even though the people they affect may agree with those norms. Plenty of men endorse ideas about males that are basically misandrist, just as plenty of women endorse ideas about females that are basically misogynist.
Quote from Ain »
What strikes me about this sort of thought is that it's actually quite archaic and heteronormative. Being penetrated as a gay male isn't emasculating (or "rape") because gay sexuality has a completely different dynamic than the gender roles that have been established in heterosexual intercourse. I see no reason to draw such a distinct comparison between sexual roles when the only commonality is the mechanical aspect of penetration.
Very insightful. Philosophy like this about sex is often referred to as sex negative, or sex negativism. A sex negative system establishes as fundamentally true about sex the wrongful things that sexist conditioning tells us about sex. We want to change attitudes about sex, not arrest them.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.

Level 3 Magic Judge
Do you know any judges who always impress you with their work ethic, knowledge, or attitude? Nominate them to be the next Judge of the Week!
What I hate talking about feminism and feminist debate is that it always dredges up my old issues with feminism, ones which I try to resolve but rarely have an avenue. Most people on this forum and in my everyday life don't want to talk about what kind of effect feminism has had on transgender people or things related to that.
What I really want to see is feminist discourse having decisively defined and explained principles that are closely followed. There need to be moral ground rules and an understanding of the goal. We respect each other, our bodies and our minds. We recognize that others suffer and we care about that. We don't do the same things to others that we don't like being done to us. We don't invalidate others' physical, emotional, and social lives. We don't act like suffering is a form of entitlement.
This seems obviously what feminism is about but it's shocking how untrue that is of plenty of feminists. Some of the people who are the most disrespectful and malicious towards transsexuals have been feminists and LGB people, not to mention other T people. And when this sort of thing happens, pointing it out needs to stop being interpreted as antifeminist.
Feminism today makes a lot of strides, and the sort that is rational in the mainstream I think can surely be described as fair and honest. But feminism is a big thing, not unlike religion or liberalism or something like that. The feminist movement has had negative effects on women of color and other minorities, and it's not something novel to see that it's happened with transgender women and men.
It's so easy to take one's relative normalcy for granted and that's something we all need to be aware of for once.
Please excuse the rant. I'm basically thinking aloud at this point.

The problem with the "Men are automatically in a position of power, thus women cannot truly consent" logic is that many times it is the women who are the agressors. It is definately true in many cases, but not enough to rule all hetero sex as rape.
I know alot of men who are never in control in their relationships. One at work in particular stands out at the moment. Sweet boy, smart, kinda cute if a tad geeky. His gf spends all his money, and if she doesn't get her way he sleeps on the floor. At least thats his story, he comes to work with some nasty "carpet burn" on his forhead.
He has no power in this relationship, and the power she has is used in an abusive manner. If a sexual relationship with one person in a position of power over another is defined as rape, then she is raping him.
Even in the most optimumly equal relationship, one person will have some degree of power over the other. Maybe not 100%, but generally one partner leads in one area, and the other may lead elsewhere. Even non-penetrative sex by this definition is rape. Even two women.
I obviously have most of the power in my relationship. I am older than Jenny, I am much smarter and more knowledgeable and experienced. Biologically I am male. i have a job and make more money than her. She also naturally seems to differ to me. But the sex we have is hardly rape. She admitted to masterbating while thinking about me lond before we got together. She seeks out and asks to try new things. She is deciding for herself what she wants for herslf. I have manipulated her in a few subtle ways, but only to give her more confidance. I wouldn't have been with her in the first place if she didn't become more confidant and assertive and in control of her life. I take less care of her and make her take more care of herself than her sister. If anything, she is more capable of making that decision now than when she met me. My goal for her is to make her confidant and assertie enough that we can be closer to being equals. Both for our future together, and failing that so life on her own is more in her control.
The mark of a good relationship is when being in it makes both parties stronger. There is no rape there.
I can see the argument when refering to many relationships, and definately many casual sex encounters. But again, rape doesn't need a *****.
Mamelon pointed out that one problem with modern feminism is that it has no unifying doctrine, no set of ideas that everyone know that they are talking about when discussing the issue. A simple case where I take a very pro feminist stance would the issue of women in combat. America is involved in an interminable conflict in Iraq, yet the U.S. is still staunchly devoted to keeping women out of comabt. Why? It's an obvious case of outdated ideologies hurting people. I've never been in the military, but if I was in a fight, then I'd want as many able bodied and like minded people on my side as possible, regardless of gender, orientation, or whatever. To paraphrase a popular movie "Numbers alone don't win a battle, but they sure do help." O ther issues, like the idea of all penetrative sex being rape, are so bizarre and frankly offensive that it makes it hard to take anything other than a dim view of feminism.
She is cute, but then, every girl is cute in a cheerleader outfit.
"Feminism" is really an outmoded catchall for many diseprate idoligies, hence the term needs to be retired.
I don't mind the taste of semen except for the texture, wich I find rather discusting.

While you'd think the natural reaction of people in a persecuted minority would be to united with other likewise disenfranchised groups to form a stronger resistance, too often the human response is, unfortunately, to try and push the other persecuted group under the bus and prove to the persecutors that you're "not like them". Even Ghandi did the same thing with Africans in South Africa, trying to prove to the British how Indians were intelligent and hardworking, not like those shiftless natives (to be fair, I should mention this was a much younger Ghandi than we think of as the great pacifist independence leader). It's the pattern of Poles and Jews after the Holocaust, or Blacks and Latinos, or, sadly, the LG attitude towards the BT part of the alliance too often. I've lost track of the number of times I've encountered the attitude from supposedly open minded people, even those that support gay marriage rights, that bisexuals, absurdly enough, simply don't exist; it's just a college phase, a gimmick, a stunt, or a self-delusion. No one, at least, pretends that homosexuals are actually mistaken in what type of people they're attracted to, but it's like you have to present photographic and DNA evidence of having been in a threesome while sober on at least five occasions distanced over half a dozen years to be taken as legitimately interested in both men and women. Strange.
(And of course, even after you prove it, all that means is that you're a shameless ****; I actually once glanced through a very well-researched, well-writen and thoughtful book about the gay lifestyle that mentioned, oh by the way, here's some ancedotal evidence that suggests that bi guys are actually the ones responsible for spreading aids.)

Totally joking. I've been reading the whole discussion, but don't really feel qualified to comment on the whole "feminism" thing. Personally, I think acusations of sexism are thown about a bit to freely, and it always seems to be one-sided (it seems only males can be sexist; I strongly disagree). That's not to say there aren't valid cases for it, but all these fraudulent claims just make the legitiment ones look bad (think "Boy Who Cried Wolf" effect). Similar to racism, but don't want to open that can of worms...
