I love NHK for its unique talent of combining cheerful, optimistic moments and "Zetsuboushta!" pessimistic ones. And yes, it gives a pretty much clear picture of each and every Japanese social flaw. Gotta know it in case you're going there...
Speaking of NHK... Well, I guess it's time to share the awesomeness of ChaoS;HEAd with you all, as October is coming closer and closer. So, we have Nishijo Takumi, a wild breed between Satou and Miyazaki. He lives in a cargo box on the rooftop of skyscraper in Shibuya, is not interested in anything 3D (well, maybe except figs), considers random maho shoujo Seira Orgel his waifu and studies at school only to pass the exams. That is, until he meets a person called Shogun in a chat, who leaves tons of gory photos and "その目だれの目?". Guess what, next day, Taku becomes the eyewitness of this murder...
The plot sounds like nothing special, but trust me, I read the original, and it is one of the most original plots ever. It is said that by the end of the series, your brain will turn into a small paranoidal pile of delusions. Sound fine by me.
In other news, I watch Macross Frontier, Soul Eater still leaves me wanting more each time, Holic is over (it's so small this time *sniff*), and Kyouran Kazoku is still the comedy of the year. Literally.
@Memnarch - honestly, the seyuu list is one of the last things I read about the series. I can go "Oh, cool, she also voiced Enma Ai", but only after I saw the anime itself.
Now, for a different question: How often do the seiyuu (voice actors) of an anime series sway you to watch? Granted, I'm pretty sure a lot of people have their own favorite seiyuu(s) [hell, I can't just stick to one], but does that often make itself a deciding point in watching an anime? Obviously, there are exceptions, but in general, you get the idea...</discussionhijacker>
I don't. I chose this title for a reason; I love storylines, plots and stuff like that. I could care less about the voice actor, unless the guy/gall is really, really bad.

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
Sadly I haven't been able to watch anime lately because my computer's gotten fussy about playing video, and all the dubs, even if I were interested in watching them, I've already seen either from back in the days when I watched dubs or in fansub form long before the dubs came out. So naturally, I've started reading all sorts of manga, and so far I'm up to reading 31 series. Anyway, just found this after years of being an otaku on the MTGS forums, so I thought I'd drop in and say hi ;D
I would have preferred whole series of it instead of just OVA.
MOST of the time, an OVA feels more complete to me, since I like compact things. I HATE filler with a hot, scalding, fiery, burning passion, and a series can often lose me completely if it gets out of hand. It doesn't necessarily mean I need action 24/7, but I need the story to be progressing. In some form. Which is why I tend to hate "Let's take a look at this person's childhood and life up till now...", or "Omg, what a weird, funny episode!". The only exception to this rule are anime basically built upon randomness, in which case, it's still never boring. (usually the opposite)

If you join, you get a rank and title!
How often do the seiyuu (voice actors) of an anime series sway you to watch?
Like most of the others, it's usually only when it's bad. If I watch a series, and I think someone did an exceptional job, I'll try and remember the name just for kudos sake, but I've never gotten to the point where I've seen an actor's name, and been like "I wasn't going to watch this, but I think I will now", or something similar.
@Mr. Stuff: Another cool avvy, but what's next for us to watch?
You know, I think I sorta remember one series which I kinda began to watch because of seyuu... Code Geass and Emperor Wakamoto. Seriously, he's awesome. Though Charles is not Oda Nobunaga, his "RURUUUSHU" is one of the best phrases in the world.
Also, please refrain from mentioning titles if you know what something is. I may discontinue the practice of hiding the title in the future, but I just want to try it out and see if it works at all first, and if so, if people like it that way. You are free to say things like "cool, I really like choice number five, I watched it a while back *wink wink nudge nudge*", etc.
You have two votes, and voting will close in a week. Hop to it!
Just for the sake of discussion, here are the choices for this round.
Choice 1 - The story of a man, God, a whale, and what life is all about. Strange. Thought provoking. So good that, while it contains some semi-nudity and depictions of sex, the Japanese ratings board gave it a lower content rating because they wanted as many people as possible to see it. Studio 4*C.
Choice 2 - There is a town... old, decrepit, run-down, wonderfully full of flavor and life and color. It's "ruled" by two kids - and they must defend it from devolopment, and the introduction of a new theme park by a money-grubbing developer. The first real anime directed (from Japan) by an American director. Studio 4*C.
Choice 3 - Ethereal. Creepy. Just plain friggin' weird. A small girl collects water in jars, protects an egg, and hides from the shadows of fish and fish-hunters in an eerie, possibly post-apocalyptic world. Directed by Mamoru Oshii.
Choice 4 - A dream of falling from the sky...and then birth. A girl is born from a large cocoon, greeted by a group of females with small wings on their backs and shining halos above their heads. Soon her own wings grow, a halo is placed on her head and she is told that she must work in a nearby town.
Choice 5 - After being deserted by her parents, an 11-year old girl becomes disillusioned with any form of human relationship. She was entrusted in the care of her grandmother, who lives near a forest. However, she soon encounters unbelievable things and gradually realizes that the forest is more than what it seems. You haven't seen this many awesome Youkai and spirits since Mononoke-hime.
well I think i explained my choices in the poll... though I admit i may have chosen differently had i known the genre... while i may watch something based upon description the genre and style in which the anime is carried may make not watch it

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange eons even death may die.
Genre - Hrmmmm. I thought I might be forgetting something.
Well... I don't know. Many of the choices this time actually defy genre. They're all unique and not something which you're likely seen a whole hell of a lot of before (well, the last one perhaps, but the youkai are like the bestest ever in that one ^__^). I may add genre in the future, or at least the keywords from ANIDB, but for now I'll leave it like it is.
My personal choice is number one. Showcases why Studio 4*C is my favorite studio. Sorry Gainax, but it is.
I got the word that this clan is around (which is surprising, as I like Haruhi and I didn't put 2 and 2 together on the clan name...) and might as well stop by
I'm currently hanging around Kansai Gaidai University in Hirakata (between Osaka and Kyoto) for the semester, but I'm normally a Wisconsin guy.
My anime preferences are pretty varied; at the last time I thought hard, I put my favorite series as FLCL, [Choice 4], and Elfen Lied. Somewhat paradoxically, I'm not watching many series while in Japan; just keeping up on Code Geass, mostly. Most of what I'm planning on watching once I return home are series in the similar genre to [Choice 4], since it was really the first series in that style which I've seen.
We wouldn't have known it was a choice if you hadn't said anything, memnarch.
I don't want to seem *too* overbearing on the choice thing. I'm sure if anybody did any kind of research, they could find out what most of them are. Mamoru Oshii didn't direct an entirely vast number of things, for example. Rather, I just wanted the gut reaction to be from the description, not the name. I wanted to avoid the "oh, I've heard of that vaguely and it sounded dumb" kind of thing and also the "OMG like 60 bajillion people have seen that except me *click*" kind of thing. Even if you've only heard of something once, you're still more likely to pick something you've heard mentioned by name before than something you haven't, and that is the *main* thing I wanted to avoid. I like the idea of ending up picking some of the waaay out there titles that the "general" public doesn't know are that good.
I'd just pick them myself (and sometimes might - as has been done in the past with our anime club IRL), but that should only be done in instances where it's something that everyone *needs* to see and will universally like. The Hellsing OVAs, for instance.
Also, welcome to the thread, BradleyJX! It's good to see a fellow Japan resident stop by. I'm a few hours south of Osaka, myself. I'm an English teacher at a small language school over here. I'd have come over during my university days, but I got started on the program late, and had to play catchup. I managed to graduate on time, sure, but I didn't end up having time for overseas studies after switching majors completely during the end of my sophomore year.

Nice tastes, I'm a definite FLCL fan myself...
Also, @Sepiriel: Glad to see a fellow fan of the T&A!
The poll was great as it is Mr. Stuff. Even though after voting, and read them again, I recognized two of them (maybe a third... hmm), but when I voted, it was nice to not have the titles, art, or anything else clogging my judgement, and just taking it for what it was.
Guys, anyone interested in First Squad?
Stoked. Production values look amazing (it IS 4c), and I think that if they can keep the pace up throughout, it will be awesome. Also, @Rodyle, it's based more in fiction than fact. So if anything, it's similar to the million other "alternate timeline" titles that japan is so fond of.
A quick bump of the voting thread so nobody misses it: Go and Vote Here.
I'm really liking the way that the poll has turned out so far. It looks like either one or five. Both are good. I have my opinion about which one we "should" watch, but... We'll see. Very interesting. I'm glad you guys like the vote system, too. I will reveal the names of everything once the poll is over, but I may bring some of those back on future polls. I'll try to keep the polls as fresh as possible.
I checked out the website for First Squad, and it looks pretty dang sweet. I'll definitely check that one out once it is released. The production values seem very high, and while I don't like pure history, I'm all for sci-fi-based adaptions of history.
I honestly can't remember whether I liked FLCL or not. I don't remember disliking it. I think I chose to watch it because Wikipedia stated it as part of the inspiration for Avatar: The Last Airbender (The Adventures of Aang).
Mr. Stuff, you always have an awesome avatar. Which reminds me, where can I find more information about the FMA 2nd season?
Finally, the last Parallel Works is here... though it isn't actually parallel. It is the true story of Lorgenome's battle with Anti-Spiral (note that the music used is actually Lorgenome's theme), one of the pages of Gurren-Lagann history I always wanted to see. And damn, isn't it awesome! The best Parallel Works to me. Definetely worth the 1.5 months wait and crappy Libera Me video.
Gods, I really hope the new season starts soon. I can't get myself to watch CG any more (though I probably will eventually), and Allison to Lillia, while being a lovely series, is being subbed way too slow. The only series I'm actively watching is Macross Frontier (and one or two older series).
EDIT:
Just finished "series 4', and I don't think this would've been the one to watch for or biweekly stuff. You can't just watch 3/4 episodes and base your opinion on that. You'd have to watch the entire series (though that's probably the entire idea behind this stuff, isn't it).
I've been watching D.Gray-Man almost obsessively recently. Why do the anime gods hate female leads with long hair? Can't you let them have their hair?! Both D.Gray-Man and Xam'd went the way of Eureka Seven on the hair. (note to self: don't get too hung up on hair fetish)
Sooo, it looked like choice 5 was in the lead last I checked. When are you going to tell the people too lazy to look it up (err, me) what it is and when we're discussing it?

Cool beans.
Alright, since nobody else is voting and we have pretty clear winners, I'll go ahead and do this.
*fanfare*
We will be watching the top two out of this week's batch. That's how it's gonna work. We'll do this every two weeks, but have the poll once a month, and watch two things from it. One by two weeks, one by four weeks. Sound groovy? Too much? Let me know if you feel we need to do this every three weeks or every month instead.
Two weeks from now, we will have watched and discuss Mind Game. Four weeks from now, we will have watched and discuss Miyori's Forest. I chose Miyori's Forest to watch second because it's harder to find a copy of.
Enjoy, people. More exact details when I get back home from work. I'm on break right now.
Awesome. (dang, I need to come up with some new adjectives/adverbs..ummm) Cool beans! I'll add 'em to the eventually watch list. I'm almost positive I recognize Haibane Renmei being mentioned by a Quarkie at some point.
Okay, I'm probably going to get even less active the coming weeks. I just bought a faded Gibson SG, and I plan to play it. A lot.
I'm still going to watch Mind Game and that other film though.
EDIT: I think I got myself a copy of Mind Game. However, it seems to be 143 minutes, so I don't know if I have a 'good' version, or it has been f'ed with in some way.
