I LOVE the idea, since I'm not the most "watched" person in any way, and having the opportunity to not only get suggestions every month, but discuss them with smart people who actually share the passion (not many of my friends enjoy anime, or the culture in general, and my gf can't stand it... :(), BUT:
Are these all going to be available to buy/netflix/order? I'm not a big fan of torrents, or youtube... I'm not trying to be a saint here, but as an artist myself, I'm for supporting production companies, and the artists that get paid by them. <_< Seeing Gainax go belly up was a big deal for me, but it's probably a personal thing. (and this discussion is for another day!)
First: I think you meant Geneon, not Gainax. Gainax is still very much alive and kicking, especially after TTGL.
Second: To answer your question, yes. I think we can try to keep it to things available via netflix (because their library is huge). That may not always work out, but we can give it a shot, certainly. Regardless, I think we're just going to say "watch it", and leave the "how" part up to your personal discretion. Most of the stuff I'd like to see done is very "underappreciated" and/or "forgotten" by the new crowd, so there's a good chance you'll be able to netflix what we end up with.
Our first title, gentlemen, just to get this ball rolling: Strait Jacket. What day is good for everyone? Saturday? Friday? I think we should pick a day every two weeks, and then start general discussion of that anime on the chosen day. Personally, I nominate Friday.
I'd love to start this, but I'm on a vacation this weekend and scrambling to find textbooks next week. If I have enough free time, I'll definitely search for it on my local networks (Veoh, etc.) Doesn't help that I'm sick amidst all this. I'll give it a shot, if I can.
I don't think I'm available this Friday, but I can always join late.
Strait Jacket is good so far. Not far enough to really hit much storyline (aside from setting things up). I like the whole premise of possibly turning into what you hunt (like Claymore or Supernatural).
Watching NHK. Wasn't sure when it started going into the "galge", but then it got really deep. Will definitely finish.
I don't think I'm available this Friday, but I can always join late.
My idea is sort of to have everyone "get" the thing within two weeks, and on the friday of the second week, we all watch it (again or for the first time, whatever) and then discuss. It'd be difficult to organize our time zones all together, so I think we can probably say just watch it some time on or around the second weekend and then post about it here. Sound good?
I don't know how much time I'm going to have the following week, with school starting again and all that stuff. I will certainly do my best to watch it though (and if I can find the episodes, I've got really bad searching skills).

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
@Singer
Ooh, cool. You'll like it, I'm sure, at the very least for the not-so-subtle implications about American elections and/or portrayal of stereotypes. I'm not sure if I like "the count" as a character in this one, but I do like the individual stories, especially the one with the bunnies. (Check AMV Hell 4, "Rabbit Slayer").
I'm a big, big fan of obscure-yet-surprisingly-good short titles like this. I've got a big collection of them I'd like to see us do for the "anime club" thing. Things like Angel's Egg, Glassy Ocean, Iblard Jikan, and Mind Game just give me the tingles.

Ah, yes, sorry- I was very tired when I wrote that.... -_-
Also, sounds awesome. You are my hero. I'll go line em up on my netflix now.
Bokurano - Just started this one. It tells about group of kids that apparently have to sacrfice themselves one by one to save the earth. Each episode seems to tell about one of those kids before he dies. Reminds me of Battle Royale.
Cool premise, but I'm not usually fond of "This was my life" episodes in normal series, since I like to follow the character AS they go through things... Not watch flashbacks. :\

Bokurano is my favorite series of 2007 aside from absurdness that is TTGL. It's just an awesome, awesome concept. Especially when you find out the things that you find out in the later episodes... oh man. Just so much "epic" there. Episode 13 takes the epic-ness and just kicks it up about 14 notches. FTW. It's easily the best serious giant robot show I've ever seen. Because piloting this robot is decidedly *not* awesome.

No, you don't understand. This is a very under-appreciated show, and deserves to be watched. Basically, the premise is this: a group of kids get signed up by a (seemingly) all-powerful entity to take part in a sadistic "game". The game is this: they pilot a giant robot to save the earth from some creature that is attacking it. Whoever is the pilot is also the battery - in other words, piloting it uses up your life force. You win - then you die. You don't want to pilot it? Awww... Then the earth and everyone on it dies. You are screwed. After one pilot dies, a new pilot is chosen from the group at random.

Interesting premise, no? It's good, trust me.
Hmm.. I'll have to give it a shot (though I agree, that I don't see anything replacing TTGL as the top anime in.. well, a while). After all, I'm one of those Eva fans.
Of course, that's AFTER I watch Straight Jacket.... ^^
Looks to me like the first 4 volumes of Haruhi. In russian I presume? They probably take longer to release there (just like it takes longer for the english ones to come here).
Finished Welcome to the NHK. That was really good, although I thought the ending was slightly weird (guess my problems aren't quite that bad).
Currently watching Ergo Proxy. Its fascinating, will continue.
I haven't watched anything new for a while, maybe all the subbers are students? Anyone else who hasn't seen a new sub in a couple weeks?
I still don't know if I should get it. The songs are awesomely done, but on the other hand, the dub is mostly ugh. At least the subs are still there...
What do you mean, "not going to get collector's edition?" I simply preordered both... Btw, I think the dub is... not great, perhaps, but still very good.

C.C., Marianya, and Suzaku are at the Geass door, talking, albeit briefly. Anya reveals that she currently is in the form of Marianne, Lelouch and Nunnally's mom.
***OP***
The Black Knights are deployed to find and kill Zero, given that he has "reappeared" somewhere on Kaminejima. Karen wants to believe Lelouch, but her voice won't be heard by her comrades. Meanwhile, within the Sword of Akasha, Lelouch starts asking his father questions: "Who killed mom? Why didn't you protect her?" Charles merely replies that he has no reason to respond, given the fact that Lelouch (and the world, one speculates) is built upon lies. Lelouch indeed confirms his lying self to his father. He asks a spew of things, calling his father also a masked man amidst society, even if he is the Emperor. The Emperor calls this wrong, and the setting shifts to a library. Charles pulls a book off the shelf. They have a brief discourse before Charles explains that the purpose of Ragnarok is to make the world anew.
Cut outside, where C.C. explains to Suzaku about her world, where the Emperor and Lelouch are currently trapped. The door is revealed to be half obliterated, but Anya is working on the door, somehow. (Oh well, she is Marianne with Geass, after all.) She intends to go in and take C.C. with her; Charles and her son are waiting. After a brief moment of silence, Marianne pouts and goes ahead. She activates the remnants of the door and Marianne's spirit heads on in. Anya is knocked out. C.C. briefly talks to Suzaku before the scene shifts again.
Bismarck rips through a rebel's Knightmare before he notes the Black Knights and Schneizel in tandem heading towards Kaminejima. Karen, specifically, still needs to hear something from Lelouch (her question in ep 19, and the response, presumably.)
Back inside C.'s world, Lelouch is stunned to see his mother. He, at first, believes it's simply a trick by Charles, but she's real. Meanwhile, Charles becomes a bit willing to reveal something: his own family, as a child, were all murdered in various ways. (Insert picture of him and V.V.) There's notice of a flashback where Marianne is talking to V.V. about her own pact with C.C. Cut then to eight years ago (the "murder" that traumatized her children.) V.V. accuses Marianne of distracting Charles from fulfilling their contract, and as such, he intends to terminate her in a very Al Pacino-manner. She's shelled down in gunfire, but notices a young girl, Anya, to the side, hiding and watching. V.V. calls it a terrorist attack, and cues the gunfire to come from all sides to make it seem realistic enough. Before the fire comes, Marianne Geasses Anya to have her hold her own and Marianne's existence together. After the incident, V.V. notes the "incident" with Charles, calling it regrettable. Charles is significantly angered by this. End the flashback, and we have Charles calling the world a bunch of liars, and calling the need to remake, etc.
Milly is scanning the explosion site, finds Nina all depressed. Back on the flagship, Bismarck is interested to know what Schneizel's doing here, with the cooperation of the Black Knights.
Back at the door, Suzaku is talking to C.C. about her existence as "an eternal witch," never to really die. It is revealed within Akasha that not just Anya, but Nunnally too, was Geassed. Nunnally needed to survive, and avoid further Geass (I think, they mention her eyes). This leads to Lelouch asking what his role is in the grand scheme of things. (Not sure here...) I belive that he is supposed to be the piece that activates the Ragnarok and begins to remake the world anew. Struggling with all of this, Lelouch turns around to welcome the arrival of C.C. and Suzaku into the Akasha.
It is shortly thereafter revealed perhaps Suzaku has a role in the grand scheme of things. He asks something which I can't understand, but the Emperor confirms it, and asks C.C. to begin the plan. Afterwards, Charles will grant her death wish. He holds up his Geass hand and activates the process.
All around the world, the Geass sites begin to rumble and create strange Aurora-esque colors in the sky. Schneizel demands to know what this is, and Bismarck replies that it's all part of the Emperor's plan. The drawback? Schneizel may not be around/be where he wants to be when it's all over.
***CM***
Inside the Sword of Akasha, things get tricked out as plans get underway. Suzaku asks Lelouch why he's bothering to stick around (you know, you've lost everything). Lelouch merely replies that it's been his destiny to protect Nunnally, even if she is no longer with him (something to that extent, I trust). Lelouch then turns to find out the true intentions of his mother, which, to his dismay, match Charles' wish to remake the world of liars. Charles says that, eventually, the time when the world will understand why he needs to do it will come. Lelouch replies that it'll never come. He calls out his parents on the fact that he and his sister were abandoned by their parents, and the war between Britannia and Japan never had any meaning. The parents reply that it's all for Nunnally's wish for a peaceful world, but Lelouch retorts that they're building their own peaceful world. Charles sneers and replies "Ragnarok has begun, what can you do?" "I am Zero, the man of miracles!" *insert overly-elegant-removing-contact-to-reveal-Geass-eye*
Charles believes that it's merely a bluff; there's nothing more Lelouch can do. However, given that it's C.'s world, Lelouch intends to use Geass as a buffer of the power of kings. Invoking that power, he calls out the god above. Marianne tries to stop him, but Suzaku pulls out the sword and warns her to stop. Something about Euphemia, which incites Suzaku. Charles does not believe his son will succeed in shutting down Ragnarok, but Lelouch wants his tomorrow, and at that point, he gains the power of Geass in his right eye. Ragnarok begins to fall apart; the gods have sided with Zero, the maker of miracles. C.C. lolls around, telling Charles to give up, but he won't stop here. He thrusts out his Geass hand, only to see he's disappearing bottom up.
Lelouch walks forth to witness his parents (both) disappear. Marianne wants to know why C.C. isn't disappearing, but she won't say. Lelouch is still visibly distressed: his parents don't give a crap about his sister, as they don't understand the meaning of Nunnally's smile, or something. There's a lot of conflict that I couldn't fully piece together, but Charles lunges forth with what remains of him to implore Lelouch to rethink remaking the world. Outside, Schneizel indeed intends to carry out his plans of ruling his world. If that's the case, Lelouch will just have to make it his own. He then orders the Emperor to disappear with his Geass, banishing his parents. Back on the flagship, Bismarck realizes that the Emperor is now gone.
With the plans stopped, C.C. asks what those two intend to do. Suzaku wishes to get his revenge for Euphemia on Lelouch, but Lelouch doesn't really care about that right now. Time jump, one month later.
Inauguration of the new Emperor of Britannia. To everyone's surprise in-show and everyone's expectations outside, Lelouch vi Britannia is now the Emperor. As Odysseyus tries to soften him up and find out about Charles, Lelouch reveals that he killed his father. Immediately, they demand his arrest, but a figure shoots out from above to defend him from the soldiers. Thus, it is revealed that Suzaku is now the Knight of Zero. As Odysseyus shouts protest, Lelouch simply pulls out his double Geass and orders the entire convention to follow his orders. And so, they do.
Schneizel and his men are still with the Black Knights, presumably exiled or not welcome back. They intend to deal with Lelouch, but the Geass is perhaps the biggest problem to confront...
I will admit, I expected Lelouch and Suzaku, but not in the way the episode ended. Yet again, they like to set the stage...I hope it will not disappoint.
I still don't know if I should get it. The songs are awesomely done, but on the other hand, the dub is mostly ugh. At least the subs are still there...
Ah, I thought you were referring to the english dubs, which I thought were well above the average dub. (same for TTGL) But were you referring to the Russian dubs?
Also, started Straight Jacket, but it's getting harder to find the episodes as they go on...
Ok, Mr. Stuff! Strait Jacket is watched and now I want to ask when the discussion will start? GMT, if possible, as you're in Japan (I presume), I'm in Russia and the server is, AFAIK, in America, so we have to agree on a timetable it seems...
edit: Masamune: yeah, we were talking about Russian dub. And, mind you, never did I say it's bad - and neither did Singer. Actually, I liked the dub quite much. As for English dub, I only heard english version of God Knows, and it seems to be good - though I still like Aya Hirano's singing better than either russian or english versions.
Finally watched CGR2 Ep. 21. Not sure why it took me so long to get around to it. I think watching the entire Ergo Proxy series over the weekend drained me. Anyhow, good stuff.
Yeah, the Evangelion parallels are there. I think Lelouch is much better qualified than Shinji for deciding the fate of the world. I was thinking at the beginning, a big difference between Lelouch and Yagame Light is that, in the end, Lelouch is willing to give everything up (except Nunnally, but he didn't really have much of a choice) while Light was never willing to harm himself.
I loved the whole Knight of Zero pun. With the (old) Emperor dead, what happens now?
How many episodes of Strait Jacket do we need to see before we join the conversation?
