Hello, Sephiroth! Good to seeya again! Glad to know you're back into Magic, even if your record isn't so hot. As for me, yeah, I had a killer speeding ticket last week, and it raped my wallet. I should be okay for now, though.
My dad is home from Iraq, and he's the reason I'm on campus so early. I'm just stopping by before I go take a nap for 2 hours before classes.
This time I am going to cover my UG Dreadstill list just for kicks. But mostly becuase I actually have time to do one of my internet hobbies which is writing up a legacy of the week for the coffeehouse.
The Dreadstill archetype is a very popular legacy choice right now. Dreadstill has been pulling top 8s in many varied metagame environments. Dreadstill even won the source anniversary legacy tournament with over 125 players. This tournament took place a few days ago and the metagame was packed with just about any deck you could think of as well as with some of the best legacy players in the world.
How does this deck work?
You can basically power out phyxerian Dreadnought and cancel it's drawback trigger ability by either stifling it or trickbinding it. Dreadstill also incorporates an aggro control shell with countertop and low casting cost card draw. Standstill has been proven as a powerful draw engine over the years and it actually fits in the deck. Especially since the deck is supplemented with mishra's factory and other cheap threats making standstill quite consistent in the archetype. This deck also can benefit quite alot from card shuffling considering this deck has a powerful draw engine in standstill, has a two turn clock, and runs counterbalance w/ top. This deck also does a good job at card filtering with brainstorm, trinket mage, and sensei's divining top making the deck consistent. Which in essence, makes card shuffling all the merrier.
Matchup Analysis
Dreadstill Mirror: This matchup is actually similiar to counterbalance threshold mirrors in a way where establishing counterbalancetop early can basically dictate the rest of the match. Also another key in this matchup is also trinket mage considering you can fetch for engineered explosives which hits both counterbalance and dreadnought. Postboard you have Krosan grip and threads of disloyalty. Threads of disloyalty enables you to steal opposing Dreadnoughts to end mirrors quickly. Krosan grip has split second so destroying opposing dreadnoughts in a blink of an eye is also a winning strategy.
Thrash(Threshold w/ wastelands and stifles):
This matchup should be favored for you. Counterbalance with top comes in handy here since most of Threshold spells hit under the 1 or 2 casting cost mark. Also fetching engineered explosives with trinket mage can also do wonders here just watchout for stifles. Postboard gets better considering threads of disloyalty and engineered explosives takes care of opposing Tarmogoyfs.
Threshold(W/ Counterbalance and Sensei's Divining Top):
Once again countertop becomes a big factor in this matchup. You also have the option of dismantling their manabases with stifles and wastelands as well. However if they drop lands while supplementing their lands with cantrips they can potentially make your land disruption less productive. Against postboard gets better with EE, krosan grip, and threads of disloyalty.
Ichorid:
I haven't had the chance to test this matchup all that much but basically trinket mage fetching for well timed tormod's crypts is a winning ticket. Paired with a two turn clock your chances against Ichorid become winnable.
White Splashed Landstill:
This matchup can actually be a hard matchup for you if you start out slow on the aggressive end. Establishing an early countertop can do wonders here. Standstills become less adequate here especially since the landstill player can utilize standstills in a relevant manner with humility/other creature hate and decree of justice. Postboard is a bit better with pithing needle on decree. I wouldn't expect to win this matchup unless you have a fast start with both disruption and clock.
Aggro Loam:
This matchup can also get ugly especially considering they actually have a better mid/late game compared to you with countryside crusher, tarmogoyfs, and sometimes terravore. Wastelands and if the aggro loam player is running black for thoughtseize and dark confidant the matchup gets more tedious. Paired with an draw engine via cycling lands and life from the loam. Devastating Dreams can also wreck you big time as well. Postboards actually more manageable because blue blasts, engineered explosives, and tormod's crypt all help in this matchup. Threads of disloyalty can also be effective in this matchup as well. Still I wouldn't call this a favorable matchup though.
Goblins:
Another bad matchup for UG dreadstill generally. Your only chance of surviving this matchup preboard is establishing a fast clock with dreadnoughts and tarmogoyfs early on. Stifle and trickbind wrecking goblin ringleader will also help immensely as well. Postboard can actually get relevantly better with hydroblasts. Another engineered explosives for an early goblin lackey or aether vial becomes handy as well.
AD Nausem Tendrils Combo:
I have seen some noticable Tendrils combo run AD Nausem which can be a powerful amplifier in the archetype. Dreadstill in general actually has a favorable matchup against Nausem Tendrils. Counterbalance w/ top become your faithful tools in this matchup. Hydroblast can be effective postboard if you happen to play against TES(The Epic Storm) which is a tendrils combo deck that runs burning wish for those of you that don't know. Pairing countertop with a fast and huge clock also helps to win against combo as well.
Overall though I am probably going to add more countermagic like spell snares and dazes so I can actually make counterbalance more relevant.
Anyway that's all of this legacy of the week stay tuned until next time hopefully.
Ooh, looks neato, Kevin. Dreadnaught is a card that's rarely used, but when it is--hoo boy. Reminds me of a T2 Elemental deck that involves using Incandescent Soulstoke to power out a Nova Chaser you nabbed with Flamekin Harbinger. Champion the Harbinger, swing with an 11/3 trampler, then use Soul's Fire to deal an additional 11 damage to the opponent.
Okay, it's not exactly the same kinda deck but they both power our fatties super fast.
Hey! I'm back. I had a fun two days at my friend's house in Denver, rocking it out on various games, and then traveled back down to the Springs to participate in a DDR tournament. Day 1 was Singles Heavy. I got knocked out second round, but did better than I ever have! It was awesome, truly. There is also video of the awesome that will be going up on the internet eventually. People might actually see -me-, which is incredible. Day 2 was Doubles Heavy. I made it to round 3, but that's mostly because I had to face the worst person in the tournament. I feel for her, but there wasn't much to be done. There's video of that, too.
Oh, and 4 gigs of photos, roughly. Yes, you heard me right. 800 photos.
So now I'm home, and I'm getting things set up again.
It's nice to see Trickbind get played more in legacy, it is definitely something to play around. Also, *huggles 'noughts* My heroes from Mask days. (I had to give up my hopes of owning a Mask forever after moving up to Canada, because now I'm in school and not working, and therefore broke)
Hi guys, haven' t been on recently because of exams, but just dropping in to say hi and snag a peanut butter cookie. *crunch*
Mmmm... Peanut butter cookies. It's been sooooo long since I've had one of those... *jealous*
Dreadstill looks pretty wicked. I've always been a fan of the colossus - I opened one in a Mirage tournament pack way back in the day, him and Grinning Totem, which was a $25 dollar card at the time. Ah, those were the days... However, right now I'm trying to cook something up for the next MTGS standard tournament. All I know so far is that it'll probably have blue - a given, considering that I'm building it - and I somehow want to include Sarkhan Vol for his Threaten ability. We'll see what happens.

Yeah it's essentially the same idea as what you mentioned alacar. Another deck that can actually powerout a big beater pretty fast is cephalid breakfast. But that deck would probably die in today's legacy meta. I mean playing against both relic of progentus and tormod's crypt isn't actually fun.
Not to mention I pulled a relic of progentus out of a booster pack yesterday its like the best common ever since the day when lightning bolt was extremely popular.

Are you referring to Illusionary Mask starr? If so that's pretty awesome. Yeah those things aren't as cheap as candy these days heh heh. Nice to see your finally in school though.
Also Yeah I agree trickbind is pretty awesome. Every now and then I mess around and play Solidarity against my friend matt with his RBU landstill. He of course smashes into oblivion considering he has counterbalance, red elemental blast, and trickbind. I tell him to sideboard out more lands so you can have like 20 lands instead of 25 lands in the maindeck. Which makes counterbalance much more effective that way. I actually regret telling him that though.
I never thought about Dreadnaught when Trickbind was printed. That deck tickles my funny bone somethin' good.
To be honest I'd probably say the samething if I didn't know anything about legacy.
@Mr. stuff: Yeah dreadstill can be fun to play. It seems underpowered on paper but it's consistent and has the ability to steal games because of the powerful cards it runs.
@Sephiroth: Pardon me that I didn't welcome you back earlier. Its good to see you back and its good to play your favorite computer games as well after a extensive break.
I am probably going to make a UGB dreadstill list later on though since it seems pretty powerful with thoughtseize and dark confidant. Thoughtseize is also an adequate way to beat AD nauseam storm combo but AD Nauseam is just so broken with LED.
Anyway I am off for now. Later everyone and take cares.
Gosh, I haven't posted at all in the last 2 months. I've been keeping up on what's been going on though, so I'm not totally in the dark. I haven't posted lately mainly because there isn't much going on with me. I don't really life an exciting life, I guess.
Alacar, if you worry about fur on the couches, oughtn't we have put fences around 'em a long time ago, for Nai and the other miscellaneous furry folk we've had pass through here?
EDIT : and pardon me, its great to see you in here, Buzz! We missed you!!
Don't worry. I won't be donning one of those... ever. I just like the artwork.
Another long day for me. Gosh, but I'm tired in the evenings when I get off work. I keep meaning to do chores and things when I get home, but I always manage to fall asleep first. I really need to get laundry done tonight... *grumble*
Also, I started drinking coffee. Seriously, bought myself a coffee for the first time ever yesterday. It came out of a vending machine, and... it was decent? What the hell, I thought I hated coffee? Then yesterday afternoon, I tried a different brand of Black coffee with lunch and... ugh. Yeah, I knew I hated coffee for some reason. Whew. Had to hold my nose to get that one down.
So, I'm drinking Georgia coffee right now. It's not half bad. It's not half good, either, but what they hey - it's got caffeine, and it's not cola, which I REALLY want to quit drinking, so it suffices.
you know stuff theres such a thing as caffeine pills a friend of mine was popping those back in the day you could try those if you are in need of quick energy without coffee taste :p, energy drinks are also a disgusting option

It's actually a good thing to not drink any of that stuff, Mr. Stuff--Coke can stain and degrade your teeth, and coffee can stain your teeth as well, and caffeine in general has negative effects. Best thing to drink is milk or orange juice. Fruit juice is a good energy-booster too, if you drink it consistently. Balanced diet, blah blah blah.
And here I enter as the resident coffee drinker... Coffee can be tasty, provided you put the right stuff in it... I'm a fan of a good creamer.. if you put that in your coffee, it tastes a LOT better.

I love certain creamer's in my coffee and hazelnut isnt one of them and I dont know why, it just doesnt taste right to me in coffee. French Vanilla on the other hand........:D.

Same here......I dont care for sweets anymore as apposed to when I was younger. Speaking of which I turn 20 in 4 days :).
And well, I just got a haircut and shaved , I've already been told I look like an entirely different person(Last haircut I got was a year and a half ago XD). I might post pics if I get around to it :).
I don't drink coffee OR tea. The most I have is the occasional Ovaltine, which has nutrients in it with the chocolate. I rarely eat candy unless it's super delicious. Makes my teeth hurt.
Psi: Heh, I get my haircut once every 2-3 months. It's a wild bunch, it is. I should get a photo taken. The problem is, I'm an awful awful blinker.
I cut my hair whenever it starts looking unruly, although, that's not really accurate, since it's hard to get my hair looking 'ruly' altogether, lol. I rarely shave, also, my hair is so light that my facial hair is only visible when it starts getting thicker, lol.
I'm currently downloading the patch for Diablo II that'll grant synergy bonuses between skills, it's going to take forever, lol,
