I just wanted to announce that I am in fact still alive. I'm anxiously awaiting the releases of Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, and Chrono Trigger for DS. Once those are in hand, I should have plenty of anecdotes to spill.
I played the original Tales of Symphonia for like an hour at a friend's house summer before last, and immediately had such a severe fanboy reaction that I was compelled to drive to a mall in another state the following day just to buy my own copy. So the release of a sequel is kind of a big deal for me, even if it isn't a main entry in the Tales series.
I've never so much as touched Chrono Trigger, but from what I hear it seems to be more popular than Jesus. Probably worth picking it up, in light of that.
Haha, you haven't played Crono Trigger? Pick that batch up now. You won't regret it.
What's the speaker like on the DS? I have been leaning towards getting one and the titles being released, like the classic sqeenix linup are really tempting, but if the speaker sucks I will just wait. (soundtrack is a big draw for that title) Also, would you guys recommend waiting for the newest version of the DS that's coming out soon?
The speakers on the DS? Well when they're turned all the way up they're pretty good quality. Even better if you use headphones Danica, back me up on this.
its lasted me more than a full day of heavy playing, indeed the battery life is insane, though i need a new headset, mine are gnashed and almost useless damn mouse.

That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange eons even death may die.
My gut instincts say wait for the DS version, for better graphics and stuff. However, I've never played the DS, know nothing about the new version, and then you lose that classic 8-bit (16-bit?) feel from the original. So basically I'm no help at all.
Never did get around to saving that robot's girlfriend.
Instead of buying new stuff, I should start checking out all the old stuff I've never played (or need to finish playing). I still wanna play Paper Mario for the 64. Maybe I should look into alternate routes for playing some of those older games.
actually from what i know the DS version isnt retouched, its more like a port with added features, which means we are still talking about SNES graphics, at least thats what I heard, the graphics are SNES but the system has been retouched a little, that said im still getting it

from what I've heard, the DS version of Chrono Trigger looks like the original SNES version, with the cutscenes from the PS1 version included (although no or shorter load times than the PS1 version). There is some additional content, such as touch screen functionality and probably a new dungeon or something, but for the most part it's a faithful port. I too am looking forward to it.
The DS speakers are fantastic considering their handheld status. When you have headphones it's even better. While playing Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow on my DS with the headphones, I confess to going to the sound test and just listening to the music.

DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
If they ever made a DS version of Earthbound I'd love Nintendo forever. It was my first RPG and though I didn't beat it it gave a love of RPGs that spurred me to pick up FF7(the first RPG I beat) and pretty much every other RPG I've ever played.
I don't worship FF7 but it was a great game. Especially the submarine minigame. My favorite FF was FF8. It had a superior storyline to any of the FF games I've played(7 through 10 if you want to know) and is just plain fun. Plus it gave us the man with the machine gun .

Good. I really wouldn't want them to screw with it too much. SNES graphics are probably best given 2D graphics have a certain unreplicatable charm that a 3D update often muddles up.
The speakers on the DS are impressive quality for a handheld, as anyone who's played a DS game with awesome music like Phoenix Wright can attest.
Paper Mario is definitely, definitely worth playing. And TTYD as well. I haven't played Super Paper Mario, myself.
Super Paper Mario is the only one I have played and from what I have head TTYD is the best of the series. Still, I really liked Super Paper Mario, thought it had great music and a very compelling storyline.

Save that love for a mother 3 port on the DS. I would buy a DS today if they announced that.

One of these days I will play the post snes FF games. From what I have heard the franchise is kind of going down the drain now, or has been since they did that sequel that was, X-2? I dunno. But I did play a little of 9 and liked it a lot. And you're the first person to really rave about 8, most have said it was kind of a flop, though that may be because it was such an artistic departure into a hyperrealism.
X-2...yeah... I never played X but I heard X-2's magic/caste system or whatever was based on the clothes the chic's are wearing. O.o
I still need to play through VIII, I actually have it. The magic system drives my inner perfectionist crazy though. MUST HAVE 100 OF EVERY SPELL! No seriously, I farmed 100 of each spell to equip to my stats. That's why I never got very far.
Actually X-2's system was just a girly version of FFV's job-class system, which proved to be a lot of fun. X-2 combined it with X's perfect (perfect) sphere-grid system.
That doesn't sound so bad. I enjoyed FFV quite a bit. I really liked the class system it used. (of course, it was the first Final Fantasy I ever played, so I might be biased) FFV, FFIII/VI and Chrono Trigger were my introductions to that kind of game.
I liked the sphere grid, but it got a little out of hand at higher gameplay levels. I liked FFXII's system almost more. The license grid was simple, fun, and the battle system was refreshing.

Well I must say that compared to all of you, I feel kind of like a console n00b, heh.
Two of my flatmates (well, 3, but one of them never lets us play them) have playstation 2's. Thats...all.
I've never played anything from a PS3, Wii, X360, or DS.
I've always been a computer lover, and recently, well, let's just say that I suddenly realized that a lot of my best friends like boardgames a LOT.
For example.
My utterly starcraft-obsessed friend thomas recently bought the Official Starcraft Tabletop Boardgame, for NZ $160 (probably $US 100). Six of us got together last night to have a go at it.
Two of these six had work the next day starting at 0830. We started playing the game at 2030 the night before. The back of the game said that average games take 3-4 hours. Well, by 0030, four hours later, we had just gotten the orders system and combat system down. At that point, we all made a decision to stay till the end, because the game was getting very, VERY entertaining.
So, yeah, I got pwned by an opportunistic protoss player, and I Ultralisk'd a terran player. I was Zerg, so yeah. It's an awesome game, just would go a lot quicker if someone, anyone, knew the rules before playing.
From what I gather, Tywin, (Game of thrones FTW, btw :D) there are very, very few prerequisites to joining our illustrious clan. All you need to do is not hate all RPG games. And those that you do hate, well, be lenient toward those in here that disagree.
I remember playing Phantasy Star IV on genesis, heh. It really is an awesome series eh. It was one of the few computer RPGs that I completed and wanted to play through again with.
Don't worry about console noobness. I had an NES (not SNES, just NES) for most of my life. We had Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Bros 3, Duck Hunting, Home Alone 2 and nothing else. About 3 years ago we got an N64, major upgrade. 2 years ago, we got a playstation. Just this summer, we got an Xbox (although the only game for it we have is the Simpson's Taxi thing). Last year at college, none of my 5 roommates had a console. In the entire dorm, one person had a gamecube. They'd play it out in the lobby, and everyone else would gather to watch in awe.
So yeah, that's the long, sad story of my consoleless life.
And you're the first person to really rave about 8, most have said it was kind of a flop, though that may be because it was such an artistic departure into a hyperrealism.
FF8's storyline turned alot of people off, especially once you start time traveling. It put me off the first time I played through the game and I didn't really get it until my second play through. I really love FF8's music...alot. There aren't any dull scores and that made me realize the importance of the instrumental element in games. Personally, I prefer FF9's score to any of the other PSX FF games. *sigh* Try listening to the orchestral version and the Black Mages version of each song. Hunter's Chance is sublime. Also...the chocobo theme. Who doesn't love those adorable giant chickens?

FF7... a dead horse that's still getting beaten around.
First RPG I ever beat on my own? Pool of Radiance, for the PC.
