Sorry to hear about the job JJ. You'll land on your feet though; you'll be fine.
We had our Fall picnic at school today. Won a 4-legged race (tied to two good-looking women and couldn't do anything about it:no:), ate some interesting food (who knew shrimp tasted good cold?), and played football until I puked. All-in-all, it was a good time had by all.
Unfortunately, I have advertising out the ass this weekend.:p I need to come up with two newspaper ads, a billboard, and two radio ads; a 30-second and a 60-second spot for a gym.
I really like JJ's ideas for the contest. Chris' too. I think the idea of using real-world equivalents of cards in the story would be pretty cool. (Like the furnace/Krark-Clan Ironworks that was mentioned.)
Thanks for the kind words brothas! It was a shock to me and my family but I think we'll be ok. They offered me a severence package, which I will take, but since I didn't work there very long it wasn't that large. It should get me through to November. My family said they would help me with whatever I need help with when that time comes around. I hope I don't have to tap them for anything.
I'm going to my pre-release today and I think it's going to be fun. I pre-regeistered because they only have 24 foils right now. I think they will end up running 2 flights and have to prize out to more than 24 folks. Dr. Tom is our judge so I think he'll get everything straight. He's a good guy in person.
I'm on the job warpath starting Monday. I've already filed for unemployment and I did it before the Friday deadline so I should be good for this upcoming week. I don't know how that works, so I'll have to talk to my stepdad about what he did. This is very wierd...I've never been forced into unemployment, but I think it is going to be very benificial. I'm going to have to hold off on buying cards from any of you though.......DARON!....I hope you understand that!
Talk to you guys after my pre-release.

Madness, a jj doesn't can has p00psmithery! Shock + horror!
Went to Deep Creek, wildflowers in bloom, little mans had a blast - he was so excited he couldn't sit down, amazing how fast he's growing up
Played some 2-Headed Giant at the Sunday PR today, + got in 2 raging swordfights; the first when a guy was holding a Cancel + didn't let me know he was holding priority, so when I started resolving end step stuff, he flipped out + we had a bit of a shout-a-thon; how hard is it to say "Hold, I may wish to respond."? Next round I got into a rules thing + the judge on our floor was the other head of Mr. Cancel - conflict of interest? Also, he didn't understand how Caldera Hellion interacted with Sprouting Thrinax (I was trying to wipe the board + Devour so I ended up with a big Hellion + a bunch of Saprolings, many people did not want this to be possible). We won that one, anyway. Only opened 1 legend, BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL MYTHIC
Anyway. The format isn't as slow as I thought it would be, + it looks like it could be a fun challenge to draft, even if the power level is weird.
I've been thinking, if BD doesn't check in to say he's busting his chops on the contest in like, a day 'cos we've only 2 weeks left, I can bang up a forum version via posts + links to posts (so it's totally forum based, in spoilers or links to view single posts). If you guys can keep hashing out the storyline/location, doing it that way means no limitation on size other than actually getting it finished. I am happy to put my creative bent to details if we can just get a solid outline together I will find time to do it. Suck to submit subpars or nothings.
Anyone check out the new Damon Albarn project, the Good the Bad and the Queen? Or his Chinese rock opera Monkey: Journey to the West? Cool stuff
I didn't make the PR but I got to draft some. I lost, but boy-oh-boy what a refeshing change!! I can't wait to buy some boxes!! Dude at our store pulled a foil rare equipment, Sigil of Distinction, that is sick!
have a good time at the cabin....I'm jealous everytime you go up there! It must be so nice to have a place you can go to, essentially for free, to get away from everything and relax and get back to nature! Catch a pike for me there don'tcha know....eh?;)
Had a blast! Gavin impressed me a lot, with his critical thinking and with his simularity to me, physically and mentally. It's pretty crazy, and I love it. He asked why campfires make the stuff behind them look "wiggly". I asked, do you want the short version or the long version? He said "I want whichever is right." I couldn't help but hug him and beam as I set forth with the long explanation. Being six, he didn't really get it, but he seemed to appreciate being told the truth. It bodes well, imo. Everett stayed home.
No fish Jonski, sorry. We tried, but only for an hour because the boys couldn't handle more. Had fun though. Nice fall mountain weather. The pines are green (and brown :(), the poplars are yellow, the sun is less intense but very enjoyable. Saw a snake, many deer, a beaver, and 2 loons. Heard coyotes (or wolves?) one night also, just in the next valley howling their heads off.
Me. Be more involved or it won't be just a joke next time We likes you, and wants to knows you more!
DUX, Shards doesn't have a lot for my decks. Some nice elves, well maybe one or two, and some tritap lands that I can use, but meh. Many of the rares are really unplayable garbage that look like they found in New Card Creation, added :2mana:, and scrambled the wording until it does something so annoying only the most casual of casual decks would consider it. Only a few actually playable rares. You would THINK that with the mythic rare fiasco they'd have done what they said they were going to do - make rares that are staple utility cards and powerful creatures, so that mythics could be used for obscure cards and legends. But they didn't even wait one set before going back on their word. Useless turdburglars.
But the art is decent! /last bastion before the void
It's a limited set. 2-headed Giant was rad, + I expect draft + sealed to be coolfun as well. Perhaps they're saving the constructed stuff for the next 2 small sets?

Bloody Appleworks ate a chapter of my Great American Novel @*(%&(Y@
Apparently it's a known bug - if you leave a multi-page document open too long, you may not actually be saving when you hit save. . . naturally, I left my brainstorm creative tone work open + lost it.
Switching word processing programs beginning. . . now
Thing that burns me the most is the hour I've spent being too pissed to get into the right place to try to recover/re-write what I'd lost, plus time looking at file recovery things + Appleworks bugs to see if it's hopeless (yes). Faaaaaaawk etc.
Also, regarding the contest: I just don't have time to throw together that alternate forum-based version of our choose-your-own adventure; I do have a mummified rat corpse that I found under some mulch in the yard, though, + if we have nothing else when the deadline hits, I will be taking a photo of said rat + entering it.
I swear I posted here a few days ago, obviously not.
Sorry to hear about your job jj. I'm sure you'll find another easily.
B, finally got my White Album vinyl It's from the second pressing in 1973. I was stoked.
I have been sleeping/watching Fresh Prince/swooning over David Bowie/playing post-rock on my bass. Fun. Just trying to relax before school goes back. I might look for a job in the next few days too, since I need to pay for concert tickets (Big Day Out, Soundwave) and my vinyl obsession.
Speaking of vinyl, got any Teenage Jesus and the Jerks LPs, B?
eds: Having problems with my Polaroid camera. I bought some film a few weeks ago and probably... 5? out of the 10 actually worked. And I mean not just bad looking photos, the ones that didn't work literally didn't work; it's just black. It's very frustrating to only have five turn out and I have no idea what is wrong with it... maybe it's the rollers? I was hoping you guys might be able to help.
Sorry about your job JJ. I bet you can find something quick though. One of your experience and expertiese is always in high demand.
The NorEaster that came through here was followed by high storm surges from kyle. End result was several feet of island eroded away with the entire north end pretty much gone. Places I used to drive daily are missing and in many places the ocean washes up against the dune. Just another day in an environment that constantly changes.
Aparently the economy kind of collapsed the other day. I've not been keeping up with the news too much but its hard to miss whats constantly being played. I worry about my credit card. If nothing happens then I'm cook and I can deal but if it decides to increase that variable APR ten fold then I'm screwed. Course if they're smart they wont tempt me into not paying off my debt. Credit score is useless when the average american has bad credit and those few who have fantastic credit can't even get a loan.
I watched the debate between Obama and McCain when it was on. Not bad, though a bit short. I agreed with alot of what McCain says. I know the majority of you disagree with me, but I do think McCain is very realistic about this war and I think he would do well. I also like his idea about nuclear power. Nuclear technology has come a long long way since three mile island and the traditional fears involved with it are no longer applicable. I also think McCain will be fiscally responsible, afterall that was an area where McCain was highly critical of Bush.
Two things McCain said really disturbed me. First was the idea with a complete financial freeze of everything except the war. Though it may be needed I have to disagree with that. Theres got to be another way. Second was his mentioning genetic testing of bears in Montana as wasteful spending. Now I don't know why they would test the genetics of bears in Montana and I bet McCain doesn't either, thing is theres probably something behind it. Maybe their looking at the genetic health of a protected species, maybe they're working on phylogeny...whatever. Thing is the National Science Foundation has already been cut significantly by bush and has been hurt by evangelacles being placed on its board. Scientists are using the term, "change over time" instead of "evolution" in their grant proposals or fear not getting accepted on those grounds. Rediculous. Maybe the research merits removal, I don't know but the idea that McCain would cut that funding really disturbs me.
Plus I don't like Palin. I like Obama because he's idealistic and represents change and a political inexperience that I find strangely refreshing. Palin is inexperienced and sheltered. I can't see her working out as a vice president. I'll be watching the vp debate closely to see what she has to say.
So the Contest:
..... Daron stumbled down the dirt road, finally coming to the edge of a courtyard of a dilapidated building. "Who knew a mile was so long to walk." he mumbled, cursing his dress shoes and swatting at some passing mosquitoes. He frowned, wiping sweat from his brow, he had intended to meet this individual dressed in his finest and ready to haggle, after all the add showed an impeccably perfect alpha black lotus and he was determined to get it. Showing up exhausted, bug bitten, and sweaty was not part of the plan.
He smoothed out his shirt and ran his fingers through his hair one last time before entering the courtyard. The yard was overgrown, hedges and shrubs that were once carefully trimmed now sprouted with the disarray of natural growth. The trees themselves looked shabby and the grass was long and seeded with buzzing insects noisily buzzing over them. This all complimented the building quite well. It was a shack, albeit a rather large shack, all wooden with planks so weather beaten that they had been worn smooth. Despite it’s austere appearance the building was well made without a crooked board or shingle misplaced.
“Odd,” Daron thought as he went to knock on the door. Then stopped short, staring at what should have been a door knob. In its place was an ornately designed metal box that stood in stark contrast with the building and courtyard. Inside the box lay 8 smaller boxes all inlayed in loops and squiggles of silver and gold. They seemed haphazardly places with no rhyme or reason. Daron slowly raised his hand to touch the box.
“Whatcha Doin!” hollered a voice, causing Daron to hastily draw back his hand.
“What?” Daron asked, alarmed as he spun to see a man standing where he could have sworn there was no one moments before. The man was old, real old, with wrinkly leather skin, disheveled grey hair, and a three foot beard filled with bits of grass and sticks. He was hunched over a cane and slowly made his way to stand in front of Daron.
“Whosit there!” he asked, spittle splattering as he talked.
“Um, my name is Daron. Who are you.” Daron said, backing away slightly.
“There are some who call me…’Tim’…” He replied, “But you can call me Great Uncle Tim. Not Grandpa mind you. I’m not yer Grandpa! Not that I would mind being your grandpa I suppose, I think it would be nice but it wasn’t meant to be. You see back three fourths a January ago I had a grandkid and he was the nicest grandkid, hasn’t visited in a fortnight though. Best visit your grandpa when you get them, but not me cause I’m not your grandpa. You can call me Great Uncle Tim.”
“Um..Okay.” Said Daron, who had been nodding his head the entire time. “Great Uncle Tim, I’m here about an add for a Black Lotus. I was…”
“Yes yes, I remember the black lotus. Useless thing. Only produces mana. Creatures you want. That’s the way.”
“I agree.” Daron tried to hide his excitement. If this old man was the one with the black lotus and he was saying it was useless then maybe he could get a really great price. “now if we could…”
“Lightning, now that the way to go.” Great uncle Tim said, as if Daron hadn’t began talking. “Just blow past your opponents creatures on turn three. That’s the ticket!”
“Yes very good.” Daron said, without trying to sound annoyed. “Now could we…”
“Course if your fighting larger bands then you might not have a chance. Not that way anyway. But there are other ways to win cause there are loads of options. Not like now. Back in my day things were simple and strait forward. Hell just look at the way your dressed. Kids these days.”
“Sir, please, I’m in a hurry, I really…”
“Bah, such haste! What’s with haste and kids these days! Back in my day you were lucky to get out of bed without sickness but nooo, you kids want everything and you want it now! No respect for the old either! Running around the way you do! THERES NO NEED FOR HASTE!” Tim hollered, spraying spittle everywhere.
Daron wiped some of the spittle off his face, “Sir, really,” He said as patiently as he could muster. “I Just…”
“Eh? Did I ping you? Sorry about that. Sometimes I lose control of myself I suppose.” He said, calming down. “Comes from being old, you see back in my day kids…”
“Sir,” Daron said stopping what was bound to be another long speech from the old man, “would you quit interrupting me. I’m here for the Black Lotus!.”
“Bah, like you even know what an interrupt is.” He mumbled, glaring at Daron Crossly, then louder he said, “Just mess with that fancy handle.” And with that he turned around and walked away.
........
Wow, that took me alot longer than I wanted. Plus I don't even know if we're going this rout. I figured if all else fails we can pick a section like getting to the building (like I wrote here), or entering the first room or second room and getting confronted with whatever obsticals as JJ mentioned. Names can be changed, I figured Daron would be a good guinnie pig but it could be anyone or anything.
Thats my piece so if I'm out of contact for an extended period of time, more than usual, then at least my contribution was attempted.
Cheers,
Daggertooth

To expand on Dagg's thought process...if we have to do it within the confines of MTGSally, then we can make the reader have to decide a course of action with spoiler tags as the options. They have to follow the spoilers....one per choice....and continue down the road to see if they reach the coveted goal or are swallowed by a Darksteel Colossus. Kinda like the novels from way back where if you choose a certain path you skip to page whatever and go from there. Every ending is different.
worth a thought.
thanks for the well wishes fellas. I think everything is gonna be cool. I have seriously updating my resume and at 4 pages I think it's done and ready to handed out in force. I already have meetings scheduled for Thursday with a few people that have some serious connections.
If anyone wants to read it I'll throw it up in the batcave.

JJ - That is THE COOLEST idea!! It'll be like a "choose your own adventure" book!! *Looks at the clan* ..Do it ...do it. :serious mafia face:
I picked up Iorn Man tonight! But even better I picked up a new set of headphones for my LG Voyager. I got a set of Motorola S9's! They are the bomb yo! I've only charged them, connected the wireless bluetooth to my phone and tested them out. But they sound awesome. They are sleek, sexy and have the sound quality to boot! I am uber stoaked.
Random thought - WTF does "estranged" mean ...I mean, I know what it means - BWTF, what kinda word is that for "on the outs with a loved one"?

I like the text based choose your own adventure theme. The digital thing I didn't really understand and the one instigating it seems to have gone awal.
Estranged isn't aberrant nor convoluted. Infact most consider it fairly axiomatic. Often results when the veracity of one is questioned and his/her perfidy and chicanery is exposed. Typically in these situations theres still a way to assuage the emotional drama and lead them to exculpate you.
In a completely unrelated note, I'm studying for the GRE. Yeah, I mentioned it before already. Thing is I just took a practice test and bombed the hell out of it. Whew, my head is still spinning. Bit of a blow to my confidence considering all my job and professor options seem to have fizzled out. Just means I've got to study harder, get my vocab up, and remember my basic math.
Cheers,
Daggertooth
Super Edit: Just occured to me, Dux, you're mention of "estranged" isn't due to any recent occurance is it?

I'll have free time this weekend to write, if no one else wants to/can do it. Just let me know what all references to Magic/the clan you want included, and I'll see what I can do. Either post suggestions here or the cave.
Ugg....brain dead. Not to mention I was kind of waiting for anyone to post so I could take a break from contacting professors and job hunting. Though I didn't do any job hunting today...yet.
I'm starting to feel a little overwhelmed. So much to do and so little time. GRE study, S130/190 study, professor hunt/contact/reply, and job hunting. Doesn't help that our glorious leaders couldn't pass a budget for this new fiscal year....again. Continuous Resolution which just makes my life that much harder. Last year they didn't pass a budget until late March.
I am starting to hate Hotmail. Its been laggy at times and sometimes it says a message is undeliverable. I hit send, wait a minute as the thing laggs and trys to do what I told it too, then it tells me its undeliverable so I try again and again untill it works. Thing is in my "sent" section it says that it went through. Which means that for one professor at Washington university I sent 14 emails! And he's not the only one! I don't know if thats actually what happened or what but its disturbing.
Worse is the idea that I may not be getting some important e-mails. If not every email I send is actually sent then it stands to reason that not every email thats sent to me is actually recieved. There's over 50 professors I'm currently waiting for replies from...some where my contact with them has evolved to the point of actually applying for a college.
Sure I'm frusterated and in a ranty mood. But really I've just downed a liter of Mountain Dew, am all hyper, and bored of this internet search. So the more chatty I am the more I can stall searching for professors. Ohio State University is next on my list then Duke. If anyone knows a university with a strong ecology kick I'd be interested to hear about it.
Cheers,
Daggertooth

Johnny Cash was actually a good singer, so I didn't think he was country. I guess his songs do have the country vibe to them, though. I should have known.
Johnny Cash is what country is supposed to be. The country of today is crap! Pop mixed with stupidity and love is not what constitutes country music. Johnny Cash just made country a mainstream hit. It had the heart of Nashville with the charisma of rock.
Go for it as much as you Chris. Write up eveything we've discussed in this thread and put it all together with a little twist. You don't have to have a happy ending either. The story can go where you want it to. I'll try to post over the weekend to give you some insight on which cards would work well.
First meeting tomorrow with someone that has a TON of contacts for me. Wish me luck.

I agree 100% with you about Johnny Cash. Basically, almost all of the older singers can be compared to modern artists in the same manner though. I can't think of very many people, if any, who have even half the talent as the older ones did.
Daggs, if you're not particular, we can prolly set you up with a @ninjakitty.org addy.
Also, if SP is writing it up, I can post the thing in a fatty thread with links to View Single Post, so it's a little more divided than just spoilers. I gots time for that, no problem.

Cheers,
Daggertooth

worth a thought.
thanks for the well wishes fellas. I think everything is gonna be cool. I have seriously updating my resume and at 4 pages I think it's done and ready to handed out in force. I already have meetings scheduled for Thursday with a few people that have some serious connections.
If anyone wants to read it I'll throw it up in the batcave.

I picked up Iorn Man tonight!
Random thought - WTF does "estranged" mean ...I mean, I know what it means - BWTF, what kinda word is that for "on the outs with a loved one"?

Are you a pilot or a creator??
ITT: DUX explains that he hasn't been paying attention to the work on the contest.
I also am Iron Man'd today, + estranged is a cool word, + also a cool G'n'fn'R song
Happy October, kids!

Johnny Cash is country? I never realized that.

huh, did you think he was rap?
Cheers,
Daggertooth

And I love Chris's sense of humor.

No Daggs, no estrangement here. I just heard the word on Six Feet Under and thought about how I always thought it was a stupid word.
*Dux grabs the GJ*
..So, yeah ...I am pretty awesome.

EDS - Wait - WTF, the last post I saw (the one I thought I was responding too) was Daggs' vocab post...

Daggs, if you're not particular, we can prolly set you up with a @ninjakitty.org addy.
Also, if SP is writing it up, I can post the thing in a fatty thread with links to View Single Post, so it's a little more divided than just spoilers. I gots time for that, no problem.
