Oh, I know! No need to worry. I was mostly referencing a lot of gaming sites and publications I visit/read on a daily basis that basically use the term as a slur. I use it for distinction's sake too, because sometimes it's just necessary. It just seems that lately people in the gaming or game journalism industry are all EEW JRPGS moreso than they should be. Without Japanese console games the American market would be dead as doornails by now.
American RPGs often take 2 extremes: Immaturity, or serious deep commitment. Mass Effect's romance (and subsequent 1-second ass-shot of sex) is a deep, developing process of attachment to a character. Even KOTOR had a lesbian Jedi, and Neverwinter Nights had a touching opportunity to rescue Aribeth from the brink of evil.
And the possibility of a lesbian romance in Mass Effect generated more hype than the quality of the game itself. Which I must add was superb on 90% of the stuff it does. (Daddy) Shepard does come off as very flat sadly....
Sorry guys, but the clueless Danica is here... What is the diff between a JRPG and an RPG? I figure Japanese made from what you guys are talking bout but can you give me some more details or something? I'm not too sure what y'all mean and stuff.
Hmm reading this stuff makes me kinda wanna start playing games again...
Poll time!
What should I pick up again:
Kingdom Hearts 1 (yes, and i will have to start ALL over again guh)
DQVIII (also will need to start ALL over again)
Indiana Jones and Emperor's Tomb (ok i'm not sure if that's an RPG or..)
Wild Arms 3 (also gotta start all over again but as i was only in the second character intro, its not that huge of a loss)
Dark Cloud (just got this... Thoughts?)
Radiata Stories (The combat system was kind of boring to me the first time I played.. also am gonna have to start that one all over again too)
Chronotrigger (for once a game I DON'T have to start all over again.. am in the part where i have to go in the future/past and find the pieces of the Masamune i think.... I can't remember its been so long)
Well.. the only thing I can tell you is that it was the RPG my long ago ex-girlfriend was playing when I last saw her. Other than that it looks pretty stylish and has standard RPG fare.
The main difference I have noted in Western RPGs and JRPGs is that the former tend to allow a great deal of flexibility and customization of your main character (and the game tends to center entirely on the personage you've created.) Consequently, the stories tend to be much looser and more sprawling, because it's pretty well impossible to guess ahead of time what decisions a player-created character would realistically make. See: Mass Effect, Fable, KOTOR, etc.
Japanese RPGs, on the other hand, tend to play out with a more defined set of characters and storyline. Usually any customization will be purely mechanical; the personality and appearance of the main character(s) is created by the people who made the game, not by the player. See: Final Fantasy, Namco's Tales Series, etc.
The Western line of thinking about characters and story tends to be that players should have as much control as possible - they create the character, they make all the decisions. It's as if the players are themselves the protagonists of the game. This can be nice if you value creative control, but it also tends to make storylines shallower because they have to branch out for all possible contingencies. Interactions between the main character and those around him are also often shallower, because the main character has no predefined attributes (or even, in many cases, gender.)
You give up a lot of that control in JRPGs, because most don't give you a single choice about characters. The characters simply are who they are. The player and the protagonist character are clearly separated entities - the player may nominally control their actions, but they're not thinking for them. This means players have less chance to customize, but it also means that the story can be explored much more deeply since the developers only have to write one story, for one set of characters.
Hello everyone, the RP(Actual D&D) stats for the monsters from DDM Dungeons of Dread are now out in pdf form in the wizards site.... im reading them over and now i have so many ideas for my 4E campaign.... maybe i should try making one in the P&PI after it becomes more popular?

I would love it if you became a DM on the Inn, Sepiriel, especially for 4E--it might draw a ton of attention, so I hope you're prepared.
oh i will dont you worry though i might be a little picky on who i let play :p... nah ill just be stern on people who drop and dont let them join anymore :D... anyways right know im developing a gauntllet style crawl using the Pregen Characters as well as the new RP stats from the Dungeons of Dread Critters.. its mostly a test to see how many characters are needed per level and type of monsters (im even designing a level wheres theres a beholder )

About the house rules - I have a lot more in play in the form of "m20," my True20 mod.
If anyone wants to see some stuff about it, you can look here for a system I've been using for character's special abilities. It's still under heavy construction.

But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.

well it seems Yukora or Nai decided to reply to my request immideately (lucky me!!!) so i'll gather up some information and then make an introductory gauntlet in the P&PI

Sep, sorry, but count me out. I am officially anti-4e.
That said, we restarted Savage Tide last night. Three players, the party consisting of me (Psychic Warrior 3), my husband (Fighter 1/Wizard 2), and our roommate (Bard 3).
My fellow party members griped me out for killing stuff too fast They were both grappled by this large overgrown spider with spiked feet, why complain?

Can all of you give me a list of some weapon and armor abilities that you find to be particularly good? List the supplements I can find them in, if possible. I'm working on an alteration of Josh's asura system, and I need to compile a fairly large list of these attributes- but I only really want the ones that are major player favorites. Some of the lesser known or more conditional attributes such as slick or proficient are less exciting for players to have, and are less important for me to translate into the system.
Also, if you want, can you name a ring or wondrous item you find to be particularly fantastic and helpful?

Ah, yes, Belt of Healing is a great item to translate. It'll probably have to be broken into three tiers, once for each usage, but it is still pretty damn good.
Another belt I think is particularly nice is the Belt of Battle, because it's just so damn useful.

Some consider the Belt of Battle to be overly good, but I think it gives warriors more room to compete with the casters. Boots of the Battle Charger are also pretty darned good, especially if you have a Dex boost incorporated into them.

I don't think the Belt of Battle is too good by any means. It isn't nearly as degenerate as the crap that can be achieved by even a moderately leveled caster with enough know-how.
