Well...I have to say that I mst have gone off the deep end yesterday. It was one of those days....you know, a Monday that really isn't.
Now that I got that off my chest....I love the flavor text! It would fit well with our past on this site.
Brian...I have to say, even your winters are beautiful down there.
So yeah....apparently I wasn't reading as well as I should have. Brian threw the "F" bomb at me in the batcave.....
I must say that I like the ritual idea.....it's simple and effective, and it totally works with the rare we have and still benefits the common.

Let's go over the round's criteria; because there are some important sentances I think are being overlooked.
Quote from The powers that be.. »
Using the two cards you just received, design a non-permanent spell this round. The spell needs to be an uncommon instant or sorcery that would support the two creatures if they were all in the same deck. It must be a different color and it must be monocolor. The power level should be appropriate for a decent but not "must have" uncommon. The spell should assist the strategy of a deck that is trying to win with the two creatureswith an effect(s) that feels very on-color for the color the spell is.
Shauku's Familiar - BB
Creature - Snake (R)
Provoke BB, Pay 2 life: Return Shauku's Familiar from your graveyard to play. It gains haste. Sacrifice it at end of turn.
2/1
Shauku's Grunt - 3BB
Creature - Zombie Minion (C) 3BB, Pay 3 life: Return Shauku’s Grunt from your graveyard to play. It gains first strike. Sacrifice it at end of turn.
3/2
Now what that says to me, is we need a card rendering these two as game winners.
I agree with most everthing Daron said. And while I do like Ria's cards, I don't think they are going to make a deck running the allowed cards a winner. I am still on the mind set of granting a bonus to cards coming into play from the graveyard. I think that is our best bet in our limited choices.
Here are some of my proposals:
Transmogrify - RR
Instant (U)
Creatures put into play from a graveyard get +3/+3 and haste until end of turn.
Reverberate - 2R
Sorcery (U)
Until end of turn, when a card is returned to play from your graveyard, Reverberate deals damage equal to it's converted mana cost to target creature or player.
These cards would work nicely. They would work well with persist to!

A lot of talk about the clan contest. Not sure how much input I should give since I'm not too involved in the discussion and I've not visited the bat cave. Not sure what has been said.
@Dux, double colors wouldn't work very well for this deck as black already had double black. Otherwise its a decent card. I like reverbarate, mainly cause I was thinking of something similar.
I was thinking about having something that triggers off of sacraficing.
noname
whenever a creatures is sacraficed this turn it deals damage equal to its power to target creature or player.
I do like the idea of having a cantrip too. Cantrips are great.
Memorial day weekend has been historically our busiest weekend and this year was no different. We had record number of people coming over, mainly to go surf fishing. Though there may have been some to see the historic portsmouth village. I stay away from the village, again because of the mosquitoes.
I'm glad I don't need to talk to people as part of my job. I'll still stop and chew the fat with an occasional fisherman, usually a few times a day, but its whenever I want. We have an interpretive ranger who has to meet every person that comes to the island. Most folk are great, but some like to complain like crazy.
You see just north of us is a national seashore called hatteras. They were recently sued by some environmental group trying to force the seashore to make an official policy on beach access. Something they should have done anyway and neglected doing. The issue is extremely polarized up there to the point that your either a treehugger or a fisherman. Sections of beach are closed for wildlife and the fisherman raise all hell. They'd go into enclosures as retaliation, dig up turtle nests and crush bird eggs. Not all of course, but enough that the enclosures need to be several sizes larger than nessisary. Environmentalists have their own extremists who vandalize stuff to encourage stricter closures. Reportedly anyway, but I'd believe it.
The end result is that the park service is public enemy number one. They have to enforce the court rules and are hated for it. Even heard that several were boo'ed out of a restaurant up there. Its an all around bad situation, one that likes to trickle into my neck of the woods once in a while. Since there are beach closures up there some of the fishermen come done here complete with thier attitude. Locals are a bit defensive too, since they are worried that whats happening up there will happen down here. Some even get uppity since I've closed down some sections. Recently closed down two miles from driving for baby chicks.
The reasons for the closures are mainly two birds. The piping plover is the main one because it is endangered. There are about 100 birds in all of North Carolina, 75% of which nest on the core banks.
Oystercatchers are threatened and are also protected. I showed you pictures earlier, but I've got chicks now. Kind of neat actually. I didn't realize how possesive I'd get over little chicks, but after watching the eggs for so long, seeing several nests lost, its kind of neat seeing chicks.
And then there are other colonial shore birds that I'm keeping an eye on. They nest in large colonies, one we have has more than 400 nesting pairs, and they get real pissy when I visit. They dive at my head, squak at me angrily, and poop on me. Those are least terns, common terns, sandwich terns, and royal terns. Don't got a picture of them yet, but I am working on it. Black skimmers tend to nest with the colonial birds. Those are neat birds that skip the water surface with their beak until they hit a fish, then the beak snaps up.
So these are the culprits that cause beach closures and detours. Many fishermen have some attitude to dam them all as long as they can fish. And like I said, some extreme folks up north are causing loads of problems. I've not had any serious arguments with anyone yet, but the interpretive guy has and he's not too apreciative. Course he's a die hard preservationist and I'm more of a conservationist, so we do differ a little.
Overall I have been able to dodge most the drama and issues going on around here. Just got to know who to interact with and understand that in places park service folk are second class citizens and will be treated as such by others. Odd eh.
Cheers,
Daggertooth

eds for berating DUX - you didn't include this bit, which wamyc added later;
The whole point of this round is to look at the creatures and say "what card fills in the gaps and roughs out the edges for a deck that is running 4x of each? Furthermore, can I get some useful synergy going with what these cards have going on?"
Then make that card.
EDIT: Do not make a card that is matchy-matchy and has no other use besides with the two creatures. The uncommon should be useful by itself but fit even better in the hypothetical deck with the two other cards.
If our creatures are attacking, good. Or if we are playing them from the graveyard, is also good. Your cards just add to those conditions - win more - rather than enable them.
What the underlines section above means to me is that we need something that helps us use our cards. Both the ritual + the lifegain cards do that. The lifegain card can even just cycle for 2:symw:, so it is never a dead card.

Because next to black, red is all about sacrifice. Sure theres not a whole lot out there, but then theres only a handful of black creatures that can come out of your graveyard by themselves. Cards like Gargadon feed off sacrificing, its only natural for red to deal damage as an added bonus.

Thanks. Lots of folk round here don't realize that with the development of those "choice" places they destroy everything from the spawning habitat for commercial fish to the very beach their trying to enjoy. New Jersey is a good example of this with its concrete barriers which have created a beach you can only visit at low tide. Then theres the fact that these barrier islands take the brunt of hurricanes. So when (not if) the next hurricane hits it does billions of dollars worth of damage to these multi-million dollar houses. Damage our tax dollars tend to pay for.
I've got decent dunes on my island. Not the largest though. Most aren't taller than 8 ft if that. There are two or three dunes I know of that are over 20ft tall. Those are big ones. I also got some maritime forests that I intend to photograph. But thats deep in mosquito territory and I'm hesitant to go there. Green heads, noseeums, and biting black flies are also out in numbers. I'm losing that battle. :-p

You know Daggs....you can go up the road about an hour to Nags Heads/Kitty Hawk and see where the Wright Brothers first flight was. Kills Devil Hills are some of the largest Dunes on the East Coast, rising upwards of 300 feet. The place is really cool and you can see that the first flight wasn't really all that far!
You should go there one day for a day trip north of Hatteras.

Commence pissing on DUX - how does the word "sojourn" match this card's ablie flavour at all? "Stay or dwell in a place for a short period of time." C'mon dude, you're only getting all hopped up because you're trying to recycle an old card of yours. You jus' lucky the art kind of matches the "2 mana/draw a card" . . .
Yes, it is potential speed, unless you're just playing the creatures from your hand. Then it's a dead card until you need to bring them back. Dead cards aren't terribly fast, are they?
The card enables the cards we were given as much as the one does, just in a different way - taking the edge off the life payment. The idea is to enable the cards we were given, not make an uncommon that wins the game.
I'll quote this one more time, + then let you stew.
