High mages are veteran Izzet members who've been here a long time and are well respected for their posting habits.
Acolytes are next down the chain. They've been around for a while and serve as a bridge between apprenticeship and High Magery.
Apprentices are newer members who've generally yet to prove themselves.
Each High Mage has at most one Acolyte and one Apprentice. When all current High Mages have an Acolyte and an Apprentice and a new member wishes to join, one Acolyte will be promoted to the position of High Mage, making the Apprentice under them an Acolyte and another Apprentice their Acolyte as well.

EDIT: Change your sigs, underlings and fellow HMs!!!
When I did play the UB version, I didn't find Wonder terribly useful. The only time it ever won me a game was versus Enduring Ideal when they had Form of the Dragon in play. But Akroma might have done the trick regardless. Much better to play another discard outlet or dredger, IMO.
I was planning on playing in PTQ Des Moines this weekend. Someone at work got fired and now I'm stuck working, despite that I requested the day off. I've worked there since October. I haven't requested any time off except for 4 PTQs this spring. I've worked every weekend since I've started, except the 2 PTQs I've already played in. And I haven't called in sick once. So, I was thinking I would call in this weekend. Problem is there aren't many people that work there and I'm sure people won't be too happy with me. But, I feel like I need to stick up for myself. Anyone have any advice?
Risk vs. Reward, friend.
You are right in your thinking, but that doesn't make a difference if this leads to you getting fired. If there is some way to appeal it and possibly get your job back, then you may consider it more deeply.
Essentially it boils down to whether you think the possibility of losing your job is worth going to the PTQ.

Are you management or something? If this is not a career, screw them. Go. You requested the time off, you've put in your dues working the weekend, and have been reliable. You didn't fire the person that got fired, you didn't cause this situation, you aren't a shareholder and you aren't responsible for their tight spot. And what benefit is it to you to cover? None, except perhaps that they will expect they can call on you again.
Go to the PTQ as long as you can stand the looks people give you or whatever. But you deserve to go - managment can deal with management's problem. They will not fire you since you are reliable and they are now short. Do not let some crap job guilt you into working every weekend. But tell them now, ahead of time, and stand your ground. Just tell them you have plans, and that they cannot be cancelled, and that you are just sorry that you can't work this weekend. Just stand your ground and be polite.
The operative question here is not "am I going to get fired," because you're not going to be. The question is "do I want to incur whatever scowls and groans I will get from management?" I think you'll find when you look at it that way, it's a lot easier to stick to your guns and not let them cut into your designated approved leave. Remember, they approved your leave this weekend, implicitly or explicity, and they would be breaking a promise. And if you do get fired? Well, you'll just get another job that thinks it owns you just because it pays you some nominal hourly wage. The day will come when you can't afford to take days off of work. Do not hasten its arrival with random fear of your passive-agressive boss.
Thanks guys! I feel much better now. As Wamyc wisely guessed, they are short on staff and can't afford to fire me. But, I wanted to make sure my actions were morally appropriate.
Another reason I wanted to play in the PTQs this year is because it's the last season before Extended rotates. I will miss the sets that are leaving, especially Odyssey block. It will be the last season to play with old-bordered cards in an Extended PTQ, ever. Unless you count Timeshifting.
bardu how much dredge did you see at your PTQs. Im thinking about running it but dont want to be hated on when everyone builds that deck
I didn't see that much, although I played the mirror once in the 8 rounds I've played. Problem is, people are prepared for Dredge. Look at the sideboards of Top 8s and you'll see almost every deck packing graveyard hate. The good news is Dredge can usually beat 4 slots of hate especially if you can guess what your opponent is bringing in. Sometimes decks SB 8 slots, which gets to be much harder, but is still beatable.
Forum Glitch or User Error. Every now and again the non-colored text ends up black. That's fine for people in the normal skin, but in the dark skin, black text is unreadable, whereas the normal text, uncolored, shows up as black for normal users and white for dark skin users.
This can happen randomly or because the color got changed and someone tried to change it back to normal, making it black instead. Maybe it never happens randonmly, but it's frequent enough that I think it maybe does.
EDIT: Is it this year that extended rotates? That's really sad! I don't play in tournaments so much but something is really wrong with the idea in my mind that Odyssey block will not be in Extended and will only be in Legacy/Vintage. Will extended really begin with Onslaught? Or is it Mirrodin? Still, that's just wierd.
Also, can somebody define "member purging"? I'm sure its scary, but what would that mean? (getting rid of members I know, but why is it up there?)
Well, there are some people we haven't heard from in a while. And this means we hunt them down and kill them.
No, it means we try to contact them and see if they are alive and still interested in being part of the most awesome Clan ever. And if they say no, then we kill them.

Apocalypse, Odyssey, and Onslaught blocks are rotating out of Extended. Now only blocks from Mirrodin on will be legal. I'm not sure if 8th will remain in Extended, but I don't think it will.

Izzet aren't really capitolists. Scientists do not have time to care about rights, or money. Individual rights is more of a G thing. R just does whatever it wants, and U demands that it be complicated, interesting, and have a good chance of collapsing space and time.
I can't really recommend a deck for a metagame I'm not familiar with. I'd say dredge is a pretty good deck overall and you're going to run into hate no matter where you go. Just hope that people are unprepared.

Dredge is definately the most powerful deck in the environment. Considering the metagame, despite the hate, its still one of the top decks you'd want to play. I'd feel confidant in your ability to win.

If the Izzet were socialists, then we would have to share our weirds with the government, and then they wouldn't be good for anything. Our lab-goblins would be as important as us, and then they wouldn't be good for anything. And we would have to share every crazy pyromaniac device we created with the government and we couldn't burn anything with it. Therefore we must be capitalists because otherwise we would be worthless.
My Mishra Deck arrived... and it smells really good. Therefore, I know it is in mint condition.

I wasn't saying the Izzet are socialists. I think the Izzet are largely above politics and just want to do their crazy science. This means that of course the nega-ray belongs to you, you did invent it after all. But then again, if another scientist wants to use it to implode light, it's assumed that you would lend it to him for the good of science.
The Orhzov are the capitalists, who try to own everything and get rich, and their main item for sale is religion. Selesnya are socialists, who believe in equal growth and sharing everything. The Rakdos are anarchists, but with a sadistic streak that wants to be in the political realm bringing it down from the inside. The Dimir are the conspiratorial fascists who are plotting secretly to overthrow the world and obtain ultimate power. The Boros are the soldiers and police who enforce the law and order loyally but are as much interested in the strength of vengeful justice as they are in the law itself. The Azorius are the makers of the law who believe the state should have ultimate power and complete control to make for an ideal society. The Golgari are very practical and will use any means to obtain the desired end of ensuring they and their allies stay in power.
The color of law is W and the color of power/domination is B, and three guilds have no relation to those colors and no relation to the law or power over others. The Gruul are outside of politics entirely, as they are effectively the social outcasts. This leaves the Simic and the Izzet, who are scientists and are not concerned with politics.
Also, did you know that the guy who posted in our last thread asking how to start a clan?
His ass got banned for spam. Nice

As for Dredge, I still prefer Tireless Tribe to Tolarian Winds because of the mana cost. From the games I've played Breakthrough and Cephalid Coliseum have been enough to dredge out the requisite cards.
