It wasn't as much that the servers crashed, I think, as that they're overloaded. Too many people trying to access at the same time, creating incredible lag, and disconnections.
At 1 am (mountain time), there were 240,000 people on Call of Duty 4 at once. This was at anti-peak time. At peak times... I'm guessing somewhere around 600,000 people. Halo 3 is said to have 700,000 as well. Gears is older, and probably gets a small fraction of that. Still, with over a million people accessing at the same time...
Yay! New thread! As usual, I didnt make it first page..*sigh*
Its sad to see im only now at the casual customer list..I just hate my timezone and my busy thesis schedule..Maybe after that Danica will let my name be on the regulars list again..:(
I just hope everyone's fine and somehow miss me..:) Well I think Ill find time to jump in so that I ownt miss anythin again..sob.
The pictures I have up (finally) were posted within the last three posts on the old thread. I'm guessing not that many people saw them, although I know at least a few did. Since I went through the effort to even name them all (albeit mainly for the benefit of my folks), I might as well re-share the post here.
Ugh. My internet has been down. Clearly, it's working now, thank god. I was having internet withdrawls. How is everyone?
My internet has been... only when I'm not otherwise extraordinarily busy and 2 blocks away from my house in the cold outside a train station. Phooey on that, I say. I've talked to Jeremy-san about getting Yahoo! Japan broadband, and may be able to do something in the way of that soon. It will still probably be a week at least before I have it at my house, though.
Surprise! I'm here. Not only am I here, I have the most wonderful, uplifting, smile-inducing, can't-get-my-head-out-of-the-clouds-from-this-adrenaline-rush news to report. I taught today. I taught an hour and twenty minute conversation lesson as my first official lesson ever. After that, I oversaw twenty minutes of the end of a lesson for two elementary school children, taught a two hour (!!) conversation lesson for adults with the help of Jeremy, and then taught a 20 minute wrap-up conversation piece for 4 high school kids. All on my first day. Talk about being thrown in headfirst. I was stressing, re-stressing, worrying - any other synonyms you can think of for nervousness, I was probably doing those too - this morning like you wouldn't believe. I checked and double-checked everything, brought as many good luck charms with me as I could think of, and if I wasn't an atheist I probably would have prayed to someone or something or other. At the end of the day, I have to say it went FANTASTIC. I had a blast. I really couldn't have hoped that it would go any better. And - would you believe - I talked to the high-schoolers at the end of the day about Haruhi? And Lucky Star? And One Piece? It was, in the words of Jeremy, "absolutely brilliant" (you'll have to imagine that one in a strong British accent, by the way, given that he's from London).
I'm fully aware that some of my most difficult lessons are yet ahead of me. Most prominently, this Friday I will be teaching a series of three lessons at the local highschool here in Yonago, and those will of course be very different from the conversation classes that I've taught so far, much more rigid and formal. Nonetheless, I'm very pleased to say that I have not only survived my first day as a teacher, I have very much enjoyed it and am exited about it. I've discovered that I've chosen an incredibly rewarding profession, one that as of the first day has made me smile at the thought of getting up and doing this again tomorrow.
I still have some other minor troubles to work out. My washing machine continues to refuse to work properly, and so I'll have to use the coin laundry here for some time. I still don't have internet, a bank account, health insurance papers, or my alien registration card. When I arrived here, alas, everyone was on holiday, and I can't get almost any of the aforementioned things without an alien registration card and a wooden stamp of my name in katakana used for signing documents. I got the latter a few days ago, along with a stamp case, and the former I will be going with Shiratsuchi-sensei to the town hall to procure tomorrow.
So yes, things are very much looking up for this gaijin, and I'm very excited about my new life here. I can't say when I'll be able to blog next, as it may be some time, but I do try to get on when I can, obviously using Skype to contact home and my family first. However, before I go, I do want to leave you all with a very long overdue present:
If anyone has any problems at all viewing either of these two galleries of pictures, please either post here or send me a PM and I will see what I can do to correct the problem. Here they are.

So, how has everyone been? I'm sorry to hear more bad news has come your way Buzz. Condolences, certainly. To Danica, I say good luck with your move. Tell us how things are going when you get the chance, and I wish you success with the new job.
In regards to my writing a book, which a couple of people had mentioned either in the last thread or in my blog - You may be surprised, or perhaps, knowing myself, unsurprised to know that I have always wanted to write one. I changed originally to an English major in college with the intention of going into the field of creative writing. Had I not discovered the university anime club, I might be penning some fantasy novel or other even now. I'm very interested in doing some kind of alternate-world write-up - something along the lines of the Platonian elements and/or Captain Planet theme, only with five mystical staves of power as the centerpieces, and perhaps one evil stave to counterbalance the rest. It's been done before, sure, but it has also in many cases worked before, and I have plenty of ideas about how to make it different enough from the rest of the genre to stand out.
Classes were very interesting today. My performance was much more mundane, probably due to not getting much of the sleep that I should have last night. I also had a class of children (ages 10-11) for the first time today, which was very nerve-wracking. I managed to pull through it swimmingly, despite myself. Contrarily, the next class I had refused to talk to me at all - and by the powers I was glad it was only twenty minutes. By the final class of the day, I was too tired to give a proper presentation, and found myself talking 90% of the time while the students sat there and asked questions, which is not how things are supposed to go. As with life, and I'm sure every job, teaching has its ups and downs. I'm incredibly, incredibly thankful that I have another teacher (Mr. Jeremy Mogil from London) who is infinitely more experienced to help me with things.
Well, that's all for now, kiddos. I'll have more to report by the weekend for certain, if not sooner. I have to work the rest of the week, and especially long on Friday, but I get both weekend days off. If I don't have internet at the apartment by then, I might be a just a bit miffed. I'm trying to purchase service as soon as possible, perhaps as soon as tomorrow.
No, no, you silly. You must be mistaken. It's quite clearly (according to my computer clock) 11:08pm.
Well. It would be if you were in Japan, anyway. Timezones.... eh.
Cartoon Network. I rather miss that. In fact, I rather miss American TV in general. Who'da thunk. Now that I'm surrounded by Japanese TV 24/7, it's no longer outside the norm. If it were all anime, now that'd be a different story, but sadly, such is not the case. Gods, I need convenient access to the internet back, and enough free time back to use it.

Random topic: Has anyone watched Heroes? I watched the first episode online a few weeks ago, and I got completely hooked. I've seriously been watching the episodes nonstop since around Christmas time, and I'm almost caught up. Although that means that I have to wait awhile before the next season. Still, I find the show intriguing, and completely addicting. There are so many different characters that you get attached to, and you just have to know what happens to each one. The writers did a great job of forcing the viewers to keep watching once you've started. Or maybe I'm just obsessive like that :p.
I watched Heroes off and on through the first season and little bits of it during the second. I thought the first season, while incredibly weird, was actually really well done and quite interesting (to the point where I would intent to watch TV for 15-20 minutes, get caught at the beginning of an episode, and watch the entire thing).
The second season was quite a bit worse, IMO. The story got much more convoluted, and more and more characters kept showing up which made it really hard to keep track of everything. Though it was still better than a lot of the crap they put on American television these days.

That's just scary and disturbing. Even for an epic campaign.
@Alacar: Sometimes I wonder why you're RPing the way you are in AoK's campaign. Isn't your character married already?
Also, I love the way that 5 pp will turn a nice, but flustered innkeeper into your best friend instantly. It's definitely worth the cash when you have as much cash as a lvl 25 char does.
@Alacar: Sometimes I wonder why you're RPing the way you are in AoK's campaign. Isn't your character married already?
Alacar is indeed married--but he's married to an elf. Believe me, I've talked to Avatar of Kokusho a lot about this--elves have a more open view on marriages and relationships, since they live for such long times (2000 years is the average lifespan of a non-PC D&D elf), and his wife was around 230 when she met Alacar when he was a boy. Since Alacar was raised by elves, he's got the same point of view. As for Shalin, well, Tanthalas got it half right--he's a romantic, and she likes him, so he's going to enjoy himself--besides, chances are, Shalin's too chaotic to want a stable relationship with him.
By the way.. I need to get back to Half-Life so I can pummel you some more.
Heh, SB, I got Heroes Season 1 on Christmas, and I finished it by December 27th. I could NOT stop watching it.
Lol, yeah, the same thing happened with me, except I have parents, and they don't really like when their kids spend more than 3 hours straight staring at a screen :p. I do agree that the first season was way better than the second (which I'm almost done with) but I still can't stop watching them. Although I do that with most tv shows; I get very obsessed to things that I like :D.
I think the main reason season 2 is not nearly as good is twofold: One, it got cut in half nearly due to the writers' strike; Two, it was a different tone. Whereas one had a big climax and a great action-packed buildup to it, two was more exploratory and episodic. That's not really what we wanted >.O

Fair enough. And I must say, it creates interesting subplots to the story that can be very fun to watch (from a completely OOC perspective of course, that would be a little too sketchy if my character got in there somehow :sneaky:).
By the way.. I need to get back to Half-Life so I can pummel you some more.
Wait, you're not going to wait for Omna to get back to keep beating the living crap out of me? As much as I like the campaign, it seems a little impolite to keep running it while Omna has no internet access.
Physics test didn't go that well.. I didn't entirely ruin it, it just didn't go that well...
Sorry to hear that. I've always been pretty good at things like physics, but I know people who can have real issues understanding the stuff (or, almost worse, just constantly make stupid calculation mistakes).
Think on the bright side, it could be worse.
I will keep running as long as Omna is out, but not nearly as actively--as soon as you're patched up, I'ma post a little slower--I just wanted to make sure the fight was over.
As for the subplot.. I sure hope it goes somewhere.
Making sure that my first post in the new thread lives up to my title - everyone, stop panicking about whether you're on the regular or casual customers list. The important thing is that you post.

page 4? are you on 15ppp or something? not that it's a bad thing, just an observation (almost everyone who's played in the mafia forum uses 40ppp as a default, helps you see more in a single pass)
and apparently ethersphere is having some serious computer issues and won't be back online until his parents can scrape together enough money to buy a new computer. so the PPI quest is on indefinite hold, making me sad. I'll still probably find something else, either with the school's RP club or something else in the Inn...

He must be on 15ppp. If it were any more the 49th post wouldn't be on the 5th page, and I don't know why anyone would ever go for 10ppp.
It's actually kind of amusing. I tried playing mafia on MTGS a while back and for most of the time I was on 15ppp. It worked fine, but there was a lot of page turning, so to speak. Then, at some point shortly before I decided to stop playing mafia,* I decided to try out 40ppp, and I ended up quite liking it as it felt like the threads were more condensed and easier to read. So, despite the fact that I've never really played mafia while using 40ppp, I now use that setting and mafia is mainly to blame.
* - I stopped playing for two reasons really. First, my short-term periods when I have enough time to play never last long enough to finish a game. Second, I couldn't really keep up the necessary analysis without getting swayed too heavily by other people's arguments. On top of that, other people were just faster most of the time, so it often looked like I was either barning or lurking even if I was trying really hard to do none of the above.
Needless to say, it didn't work out very well when the game was full of experienced players.
i have the service pack 2 windows xp home edition on my comp.

and apparently ethersphere is having some serious computer issues and won't be back online until his parents can scrape together enough money to buy a new computer. so the PPI quest is on indefinite hold, making me sad.

I don't care if I was framed for murder if I only got a warning I would let it go.

I still say my title idea was better
"Where the only Starbucks allowed are Katie and Dirk"
Alacar is hilarious. I just hope they get cleaned up by the time Thorel finds them. He doesn't need to see them all sweaty.
Well, all, it's official. Kristen and I are now a couple. w00t. I am beyond happy right now, and I just wanted to let everyone know.
I recommend 40 ppp to everyone, really. It's not too many, and it really cuts on thread pages--We're only on page 2 with 40.
