It's still not colorless, and has no color. That's a paradox. So either you're a Zen master or an idiot, I'll assume the Zen master for sake of argument. This card will have no paradoxes because it has a clear paradox. Deep stuff man.
Have you read the news? Two Blocks?! Well, I can only hope that the Jelly Block will be nice and dark, ala Torment! Don't forget, The Imp on the precon may not be a good representation of what a boggart is. It could just be an imp.

Oh well, althought the black cards sucks in general, i have to say that black cards against black border make it look tech. And unholy strength looks way better than holy strength.
What is the worst rare you guys ever pulled from xth? I opened Sleeper Agent in my first pack...
hm... a Chucky block would be nice, but I'll stick to downright scary Torrment-like blocks any day. I hope we get competitive Zombies in the next few sets... Kamigawa block was sad for me in that aspect, even if I'm a fan of all things Japanese.
As for Two blocks next year... it doesn't really shock me. Quite frankly, I'm glad we won't be seeing more "We need to pull something out of our ass to get to four sets every year"-sets anymore (I hope). At least now they'll make *some* sense.
If Lor. is taking magic back to a more "traditional style of fantasy," what races should we expect to make a comeback?
"All these people having fun are playing for a gigantic 40000$ award, while I'm here sweating, players asking me stupid layer questions we all hate, and I'm thirsty.
Blue: Merrow. Merrow (from Gaelic murúch) or Murrough (Galloway) are the Scottish and Irish Gaelic equivalent of the mermaid and mermen. They have a gentle, modest, affectionate and benevolent disposition.
Black and/or red: Boggarts. Boggarts can be described as brownies that have turned evil. In British folklore, a boggart (or bogart, bogan, bogle or boggle) is a household spirit, sometimes mischievous, sometimes helpful. In Northern England, at least, there was the belief that the boggart should never be named, as when the boggart was given a name, it would not be reasoned with or persuaded and become uncontrollable and destructive.
Green: Elves
All colors: Elementals

I know about the new races from the LOR Complied info threads... it's the other races I'm curious about (I said comeback). I mean, we can't expect white to only have Kithkin as a creature type or blue to have nothing but Merrow.
I'm sure we'll see some beasts in green (as usual), but I'd love to see Dragons and/or Vampires show up with some powerful cards (After all, they're both elements of "traditional fantasy.").
I'm not too sure as to whether this is real or not, but... if it is, I'm liking the mechanic. Lots of abuse potential in the mechanic, if not in the card. (creatures can be sacrificed to other effects, Pandemonium will still trigger, Raise Dead makes it reusable...) Otherwise, it's a tougher and more evasive Nekraatal. So far, I'm pleased with Lorwyn, even if its Swamp art SUCKS.

I love this card. It's a bomb in limited and will do really well even outside of the limited pool.
As you said, this card is so easy to combo.... Like evoke cards and Grave Pact.

We have laboured long to build a heaven, only to find it populated with horrors.
Yes, a nice card indeed. But can anybody explain why this is an elemental?
I hope they won't do the same with elementals as they did in kamigawa with ghosts (I mean making every random creature an elemental).

Kamigawa had a heavy spirit theme, it was a war between the mortal world and spirit world, so they had to make alot of spirits. The thing I hated about kamigawa was how they decided to make the mechanics so linear and imposible to move block to block, bushido for samurais is fun, bushido for goblin warriors doesn't make sense in the way soemthing like flanking does. Same can be said with soulshift (and I HATE soul shift, main reason so much of the block cost so much was arcane and soulshift).
As I said before, elementals are one of my favorite creature types, I think this block is them kinda trying to give the type more of a face and purpose rather than being a random creature type put in now and then, it also sets up nicly with them removeing lord as a type so if it is a tribal heavy block elemental tribal might be something they try to promote as a cross color tribe.

Each color gets one type of tribe that only it can have in addition to the humans, beasts and animals, and elements like every set. That's how it always is, even in non-tribal blocks like mirrodin where black got nim, white got cats and elephants, blue got vedalken, red got gobs and ogres, and green got trolls and elves.
Black is getting boggrats, meaning we get humans, maybe some zombies, horros, demons, elementals, and most likely imps and some spirits (which in my mind are the two most likely creature types for boggarts).
Also, evoke is awsome and while the creature is over costed I love haveing repetition of effects, gogo 8 Terror.dec.

Just going to post the pic of Shriekmaw so that everyone knows what we are talking about, the art looks freakin' amazing IMHO:
I don't know. Something doesn't feel right about the card. Probably the creature type. How does the pic fit with the creature type? I ain't seeing no elements, so that is awkward.
BTW: I'd say that Uriel should become a full member of CMB, since he is sticking around here for a while already.

I'd second that.
As for the card, I tried looking up black elements and learned that in all of magic, wizards has only printed 2, bog elemental and desecration elemental, that is all of blacks elementals unless you get in to multicolor. So I can't say "this is what wizards thinks a black elemental looks like" cause we only have 2, and both look radically different.

Thanks guys. I'd love to be part of the clan (even if I'm relatively new to the site), and I'll try to keep coming back (though not as frequently) once school starts again.
Elementals are supposed to be living represantations of "something." This card strays considerably from that aproach. We've had WotC give elementals to pretty much everything (Wood, Fire, Earth, Air, and others.). However, Shriekmaw isn't really a representation of... anything. It's not a natural phenomenom or several phenomena (or however you say it) brought to life by magic. I'm curious to see what the other elementals will look like...
I'm not too sure about how Evoke works, though... does the clause "If you do, it's sacrficed when it comes into play" allow you to respond to sacrficing it? (Is it a triggered ability?) If it works the same way Amplify does, then it lowers its power level considerably...
"All these people having fun are playing for a gigantic 40000$ award, while I'm here sweating, players asking me stupid layer questions we all hate, and I'm thirsty.
With these reccomendations, I officially welcome Uriel Colridge to Clan Mono-Black! Congrats! You may now legally add your clan to your sig and the first post has been updated to reflect your full membership.

It doesn't seem to complex, when you evoke it, you play it for the evoke cost (in this case 1B), it comes in to play and state based effects are checked, it sees it was played for it's evoke cost and is then sacrificed before you have priority to do anything with it. It's either a Nekrataal, or it's Terror. That's just what I gather from the reminder text. Amplify works as it resolves and is about to come in to play before stats are checked, this works as it hits the field but before you can do anything.
And welcome to the clan.
Anyways on to the matters at hand, which, I don't think there is any. Any one have any topics of discussion?

Thanks a lot! I'm glad to be part of the clan. I would like to be the official Necromancer of the clan, if that's ok... you seem to be lacking one.
As for discussion topics... what cards do you think we can salvage from Xth edition? Sure, we all agree that Xth slaughtered black (and to some extent, blue as well), but which cards do you think are good enough to see tournament play?

Yeah, but wouldn't something abstract like desecration fit better on an avatar creature? Bog Elemental I get, but I can't understand why desecration is called an element.
Just seems like the usual random creature type mess up wizards likes to do in black.

Doomed Necromancer is good. Maybe I'll get myself a playset.

An elemental is a liveing embodyment of something, but that doesn't mean it has to look like it, Bog Elemental looks like part of the bog, Desecration Elemental is a walking desecration. Shriekmaw is an elemental of something we don't know yet, but it's name implies terror (although I might be reading to much in to the shriek part of it's name), so it has a Terror effect on a body to show that.
Really though it can be a pixie for all I care just let this be a sign that black is getting to kill things cheaply again.
Not that this a big issue, but I found something about elementals on wikipedia:
Quote from wikipedia »
elemental
(fantasy) A creature (usually a spirit) that is attuned with, or composed of, one of the classical elements: air, earth, fire and water. They sometimes have unique proper names and sometimes are referred to as Air, Earth, Fire, or Water.
And this is how avatars are described:
Quote from wikipedia »
avatar
The physical embodiment of an idea or concept; a personification.
Therefore I believe that desecration would have fit better with the avatar creature type.
Anyway, I'm hoping for some good discard in Lorwyn!
Hopefully boggarts will get some annoying discard effects.

Actually by that description it would fit incarnation better, like filth.
And odds are with persecute out they will "try" something in lorwyn, if it's good it's all we get, if it's bad we'll get alot more of it. That seems to be how wizards handles discard.

Ah crap, that is what I meant.
I keep confusing those two creature types, since they are so similar flavorwise.
BTW: I bought a playset of Zombie Masters recently for 4 €. What do you think? A fair price? I'm also thinking about buying a playset of Cabal Coffers for 11 € (though japanese).

I made it clear in the last thread I think Zombie Master is far superior to Lord of the Undead. In my eyes an excellent buy.
And for a black mage coffers are a must have, I got my play set for around 12$ in english, a japanese playset around that price I'd go for.

A guy in my playgroup bought a playset of said card for 32 €!! That's insane, imo. He also bought a Visara for 16 € (not a playset, only one freakin' card).
Some people really seem to have too much money...

I'm not to interested in the new unholy strength, my buddy gave me a play set of old school pentagram ones, which are just to awsome not to use.
