@onma: about the confrontation, the best way to approach the situation(in my opinion) would be to bring up the aspects of gameplay that stimulate the mind. For instance, if you are playing a lot of games that use puzzles, such as Legend of Zelda, you could simply remind her that these aspects of the game were designed to test the problem-solving parts of the brain and promote problem solving in those who play. If this tactic doesn't work, then wamyc's idea is the next(and only really) logical course of action( Good luck ).
@Ether&Little Dragon: I also like the Castlevania series and agree that the N64 Castlevanias had some control and camera issues, but then again, in retrospect most of the N64 games suffered the same problem . Although I must say that I found Ultra-Dracula to be a menacing end boss for the second N64 Castlevania game(I can't recall the name of that one, it's been a while).

I've never personally played any Fire Emblem games, but Ryan's been playing the American version of Fire Emblem, which he has been told is Fire Emblem 7.. he was thinking it was the same as I believe Buzz's banner awhile back with , was it Priscilla and Heath ? he hasn't seen it come up yet though so he doesn't really know for sure...
About DQ8, I've only just now left Farebury.... Goin' to the cave for the crystal ball..... that pompous King decides to stay outside... Anyway, the Mischievous Moles are annoying, as are the Lips and Candy Cats.... I suppose I should do some levelling up before I go into the cave?? I died my second or third battle, with the Mischievous Moles in there.. and what's the story behind the skills and tactics and Psyching up??? I'm a little confused about what those do...... Can anyone clue me in??
I'm excited. We're going to be playing in our evil, time hopping game this weekend. One of our friends had the idea to run this bizzare game where we are tasked with various jobs that run the course of the Forgotten Realms timeline, going far far into the future at times. Very fun stuff.
I'm playing this wicked little assassin named Nox.
He is basically a stealthy fighter, with specialization in the daggers and two weapon fighting, and also he's a ninth level arcane caster and a master of poison.
Imagine this little androgynous waif of a man with a very nordic look. Platinum blonde and skin so fair that his cheeks are constantly flushed.
Okay Danica, I'll try to use my Dragon Quest masterskills for good just this once, for you =)
It's a good idea to level up outside Farebury until you're at least level 3 before going to the waterfall cave. Put some points into the hero's Sword skills so he gets +5 attack power with a sword; in the beginning of the game he won't have access to any of his other weapon types and you get a free Copper Sword in the cave, so it really helps. Also, plunk a few points into Courage whenever you can. It'll be invaluable later. Generally what I do with the hero is spend every other level on his chosen weapon and Courage, alternately. It really works out well.
As for Yangus, you can really do anything with him, but AVOID SCYTHES. They end up sucking big time by the middle/end of the game. He's really best with axes, if only for Head Splitter.
Once you can handle the enemies inside the waterfall cave, you should probably get to level 6 or 7 before going up against the boss. Make sure you pick up that Copper Sword, by the way. You'll probably have enough money from levelling to upgrade Yangus and the hero's armor a little; this is an incredibly good idea. The boss hits hard and often. Also, if you want Yangus to specialize in axes, pick up the iron axe in Farebury's weapon shop. It's a must for Head Splitter.
Psyching up is basically storing power for a later attack. When you choose to Psyche someone up, their base attack and defense grow exponentially, but so do the chances that they'll be unable to psyche up further. You can't get psyched up all the way yet at this point in the game, but it is a good idea for Yangus to use the command during the boss fight. He can store power while the hero heals with Miniheal or medicinal herbs and then whack the boss for a large amount of damage.
That's all you really need to know. Hope it wasn't an info-dump >_>;;
I've got a question about DQ8. I'm at the casino right now, and I'm wondering if it's really a good idea to try to get my credits up really high there so that I can get some of the nicer items. It's a real hastle so far, always saving and restarting the game because of bad luck.
One other question, more general this time. Does offensive magic ever become really great in the game? I'm pretty far and it seems that I might as well just use normal attacks instead of spells as the damage ratio isn't that different. I start to wonder, what is the point of magic in the game outside of healing and buff spells.
The casino is mostly just gravy. If you can manage to get those items, that's awesome, but they aren't absolutely necessary. I will say, though, that if you really want Jessica to be an amazing whip fighter, come back later to get the Gringham Whip. It's...geez. The casino in Dragon Quest really lost its importance with the advent of alchemy, I think. That's a good thing, though, considering how many tens of hours I spent in DQ4's casino in Endor O_O;;
Offensive magic gets crazy later on, to be sure. One thing about magic-users is that you have to be pretty concentrated with their skill points. Jessica is a whirlwind with a staff equipped and a lot of points put into the Staves skill. Putting points into Staves gets those characters new spells and bonus MP, which is a big help. Generally, offensive magic comes into its own pretty late in the game, whereas the status-affecting stuff and defensive spells are invaluable ALL the way through. If you want Jess to be a great mage, just be patient. She'll be the absolute best soon enough =)

geez! I have the same type of character! But in a different game called World Of Darkness. I like stealthy dagger types too!^_^
Been at my mothers house for the last week, so I was unable to get on, and after today, the next 2 weeks are low-chance...I got Pokemon Diamond and will post the friend code when i can (haven't played much, only lvl 28-30's :()
@Photon: Hey, can I still try to run a campaign in the P&P Inn? I hope it's not too late, I'm finally back after a long two weeks of training and can probably get going on making my campaign immediately(I might need a little help getting everyone started and starting the threads, assuming I can still make it).

No, not at all. Just apply to the DM usergroup and start posting- just make sure you don't neglect your other campaigns you are in.
Hey N20 Pokemon Players- A few of us are starting our own casual league. It's not a competitive league like the Gym Challenge, just a place for laidback dueling and variant rules play. The link is in my sig- it's the Magikarp Bar and Grill.

@daftmouse: They got rid of the innuendo skill in 3.5 because there wasn't anything that you could do with innuendo that you couldn't do with a more usefull skill, such as bluff or diplomacy.
@photon: thanks, I'll start working on my campaign right away. It's gonna be an Ebberon campaign. I wanna try out some of the new stuff without having to scrap the campaign I planned on running casually at home. Oh, and don't worry, I won't let this campaign stand between my participation in Broken Mandala or in posting in here in N20.

I would love to play in an Eberron game. My first P&P inn character was this warforged monk that I loved. He had a really cool and deep background story, but the game fell apart, so I never was able to enjoy him.
i don't post a lot b/c i'm usually on the net via my wii, like now. so sorry for my lack of posting.
i heard that the later gba castlevania games were really, really good. they got all kinds of rave reviews
i never get to role play, but i am in the process of making 5-7 custom DND3.5 classes with the intention of running a campaign. but having never run dnd before, i have a question. how much do you find you can improvise when GMing? i really rely a lot on improv & characterization. it makes me think that i may not be suited to GM D&D.
Hehe i didnt really spend that much time in the casinos in any of the dragon quest games. I prefer to just find small medals and fight to earn large amount of gold to get really impressive armor and weapons sure that takes a long time but i always find it fun to just battle random monsters alot at least for me anyway. Well have a good night everyone.
Love,
Cecilia

Congrats to Shazzy on the 100th post, I imagine Photon or Ether will give you some special prize
Any advice for the Ruined Abbey part of DragonQuest 8? Tips are definitely welcome, and would definitely help... I mean, Canniboxes?! Basically my beef is that its a bit confusing (even though I have a map now) and the enemies are difficult...
Speaking of ebberon, im so noob at being level 4 human fighter right now..geez. Well my friends all started a new game just for me to join them. its fun, and I love having friends like them.
Sorry ive never been around lately..Well about that topic I'll just post it the cofeehouse.
I posted some stuff in the 'house if you want to take a look, Danica. The Abbey isn't too bad once you get the hang of things.
@wamyc: I find that improvising is very easy when you DM. If you know the books and rules well enough, you can do anything on the spot and pull it off successfully. For example, I had my d20 Modern party right a group of androids named after four of the Hindu "power gods," each with abilities corresponding to that god. They went over very well and the party had a good time fighting them, and I made them up on the spot
One of the finer points to Dragon Quest games is finding the right place to level for you, LD. It can be frustrating until you find that "sweet spot;" the area where enemies are easy enough to handle and give you enough experience to level up quickly. I always went for metal slimes and liquid metal slimes, myself; in DQ8 getting the Thunder Thrust for the hero (spears) and Executioner for Yangus (axes) makes fighting metal enemies SO much easier since they have high critical rates and those enemies aren't immune to critical damage. One-hit kill for 30,000 experience? Why yes!
I haven't really played a lot of Odin Sphere for a while, but I did get one of the "true" endings. It seems there are three or four, revolving around pairings (or the absence of those pairings) among the characters. I got an ending favoring Gewndolyn and Oswald, and I really enjoyed it =)
Xenosaga episode 3 is an AMAZINGLY good game! It addresses all the gameplay problems of the second game and gives you a really solid play experience that's shockingly similar to Xenosaga, in a good way. Actually, that was what really got me when I started playing it at first - it feels like Xenogears in so many ways. The ending is beautiful and poignant and a fitting closure to the trilogy in every way; it ties things together with Xenogears and leaves things open for another game, should Monolith and Nintendo make that decision. I adore Xenosage 3.
Hey, N20. I thought I'd officially announce my new campaign, Blood of Gods. It's an Ebberon campaign(just like I promised) and I should be ready to start soon. Hope to get a good crowd going for it!

i'm just concerned about the vast amount of stats in the game and how interdependant they are. it's just that there's so many more stats to have to be able to ballpark. it would be easier if i had a chance to play more.

To be honest...I don't pay as much attention to stats as I think I should. Generally, when it comes to a session going well or badly, I'll tip the scales in whatever favor I feel like in battle. If the party's doing too well against a blue dragon, that blue dragon gets an ungodly Will save until I say otherwise. There are a lot of stats in D&D, but once you become familiar with them it gets to be very easy to make them up out of nowhere =)
