Casual Chaos Rules!
For our first thread, post the name you want us to call you by, any AIM or MSN screen names you can be contacted by and what your official clan title is.
I AM THE METAL QUEEN. No, seriously, I am. I am the only female in this clan... so far... This is also my "first" post. I am formerly known as Teferi'sKitten, but I thought a change was in order.
First of all, getting things out of the way... y'all can call me Bonnie... because that is what mostly everyone calls me. My AIM name is duskelvendragon, though you'll rarely find me on it. My official clan title will probably be, The Official Gamer Geek Girl of Reign of Blood. I could go with Queen of the Universe, but that seems a bit pretentious...
This is a metal clan, so now is the time for serious metal discussions and the most \m/ members on mtgsalvation!
I guess I'll kick off the discussion with some thoughts on Dream Theater's new album "Systematic Chaos". Set Abominae posted something about it in Metal Streaming Through Our Veins... but I decided to start the discussion right here!
I think it is pretty good, what I have heard of it, though I'm not a huge fan of their vocalist. Of course, the music is awesome, much like the other members (minus the vocalist and bassist) on Liquid Tension Experiment. I haven't heard all of the songs, but there is one where the vocalist sounds *way* too much like the lead singer of Metallica, James Hetfield... or however you spell it. Their song "Prophets of War" is an awesome song though, pretty anti-war and just beautiful. The vocals on it are pretty good to... sort of haunting. I bought this CD for Set Abominae for his birthday.
I heard "Orchid" by Opeth for the first time recently. It is very very good. I can see the hype about Opeth is not untrue... :D. I have heard other stuff by them, but not much. I truly enjoyed that though. I don't have much to say on them though, because I still haven't hear enough... but I think what I have heard is beautiful.
And on a side note, Blind Guardian is really really good too.
And if I'm not too late... FIRST POST IN THE CLAN, WOO!

And I, since words are not that can reveal
Half the heart-shaking wonder that I feel,
Give you no answer, asking love of me,
But eyes unveiled, lips that move silently.

The wordless moment of the spirit's kiss. -Since Words Are Not, Carolyn Crosby Wilson
All right, boys and girl(s), the playground of nastiness is open!
Real name is Marko, but ZM on all on-line activities. I like everything young people like - alcohol, horror, heavy metal and violence. Joking.
The new Dream theater album is noting I would bother listening, so I'll pipe in some tidbits for the fans of the heavier vibes. The latest Unleashed record, named "Midvinterblot" is amazing. A treat for every death metal fan out there, comparable even to the legendary "Shadows in the deep". Also, great news for all the worshipers of the old Samael sound, their new studio album "Solar soul" has finally moved away from the wimpy stuff and more in tune with the electro-death way of "passage". Check it out. The latest Gorefest release has left me with mixed feelings, I'll get back on that in a couple of days.
(Those of you who never heard of these bands, use Myspace now).
Also, I do my best to watch at least 1 horror movie every day, so I'll let that rip here too. "Hannibal rising" while not being a real horror, is an ok movie and will please most of those who enjoyed "The silence of the lambs" and "Hannibal". It is not, however, as good as many claim it to be.
"Grindhouse" is on everyone's lips right now, so I'll skip it and just say that it didn't impress me, I expected more out of those two directors.
Now on to the good stuff. If you're a horror junkie, don't miss out on these two titles - "Behind the mask: the rise of Leslie Vernon" and "Session 9" (the later starring that pompous David Caruso of C.S.i. Miami). I won't spoil the fun - see these two titles.
You may also want to check "Wicked little things". Mostly isolation/curse cliche, but you don't see zombie children miners eating people every day, now do you?
Good night folks. See you tomorrow, bed time.

These first two posts remind me that we should probably share what types of metal we like to listen to and favorite bands as well as some background about ourselves including what type of Magic we play if we still play.
My name is Patrick and I encourage everybody to call me that. My AIM is memnoch1919 and I never use any other IMing programs. I'm 24 and I really like beer. Besides metal and Magic I like a variety of geek stuff like D&D and fantasy literature. I also really enjoy partying and concerts.
I like traditional (heavy) metal, power metal, prog metal, death metal, melodic death metal, speed metal, black metal, doom metal, NWOBHM, avant-metal, neo-classical metal, thrash metal, groove metal, folk metal and viking metal. If there's something I've left out I probably like that too. Right now my favorite bands are, in no order, Opeth, Blind Guardian, Akercocke, Dark Tranquillity and Agalloch. I've also been greatly enjoying Blue Oyster Cult and Porcupine Tree for non-metal acts but I generally love prog music.
I play mostly casual Magic but in a manner that definitely indicates that I used to play in a lot of tournaments. I plan on making my triumphant return to competetive T2 once Lorwyn rotates in. I will probably get into extended after the next rotation as well.
My title is going to be Official Blood-Drenched Store Coupon of Reign of Blood.
BOC is aways good. If it isn't to late I would like to join your clan. I like to listen to alot of the early thrash metal like slayer, voivod, testament and exodus. Also I like alot of the melodic death metal bands. Right now I have been listing to Early Man_Closing In, High on Fire_Blessed Black Wings, and 3 inches of bloods new cd which is Halford Approved.
Well, I don't think there is any reason why you would not be able to join the clan. I certainly have no objections to it.
I guess I shall continue my introduction, since Patrick went and raised the bar for everyone else... :D.
Like I said, my name is Bonnie and I'm 21. I like to play Magic and RPG's (both the video game and online message board variety). I'm trying to get in to D&D, but I haven't made a huge effort as of yet, though I did start reading the dungeon masters handbook. I like to create my own worlds and I'm working on two right now. I like to do graphic design and web design, and I consider myself pretty good at both of them. I am engaged.
As for metal genres, I really like Epic Metal and Symphonic Metal. I love Rhapsody of Fire, Blind Guardian, Epica, Therion, a little bit of Nightwish... stuff like that. I also enjoy (oh my god, I can't believe I'm going to say this...) Manowar(the original metal kings...), Iced Earth, Opeth, Dream Theater, Agalloch, Riverside, Symphony X, Dragonforce, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquility, Ackercocke, and others that I can't think of right now.
As for non-metal music, I sort of like a lot of stuff... so, I do listen to non-metal bands like Blue Oyster Cult (check the sig... :D), Porcupine Tree, and a bunch of alt rock bands that no one here would probably care about. I also really enjoy Enigma, and I'm not sure what to classify them as though.
I only play casual, though I want to play in tournaments. I do not play tournament worthy decks however, and instead amuse myself by making decks filled with cute fuzzy critters and/or slivers. I abhor combo decks, and think it is akin to playing with yourself. I do not like blue control since it is not fun for me to play against.
I've mainly played Magic with Patrick, though I played with other people too. Patrick got me back in to playing Magic and I'm grateful for that, now we spend all of our extra cash on Magic cards... though we are getting some awesome deals on the recent orders we put in.
Um, what else to say... I like to read a lot... mainly science fiction and fantasy, though I enjoy a good crime novel now and then. I love Dean Koontz's horror. I also love Michael Crichton, though he is not a credible source on the subject of global warming despite what some people may think. I really love the CSI: novels written by Max Allan Collins and Donn Cortez... the CSI: NY guy is good too but I can't remember his name at the moment. I love the show CSI: NY and CSI:, but CSI: Miami is too much of an overdramatized crime drama/soap opera.
I think I've rambled on long enough of things not metal, so I will leave with one final comment...
And I, since words are not that can reveal
Half the heart-shaking wonder that I feel,
Give you no answer, asking love of me,
But eyes unveiled, lips that move silently.
All youth, all love, all life were made for this,
The wordless moment of the spirit's kiss. -Since Words Are Not, Carolyn Crosby Wilson
@ADD'eM: Go ahead and post man. List your info and I'll add you. It's good to have you onboard.
The DeScent: Train of Thought is really good. Sorry about spelling your name wrong I don't know what happened there.
Now I'm about to do something that I hope catches on. I used to do this just for the hell of it my old clans on News. I think it would be cool to list a song you are listening to if you are listening to music while play. It's a good way to advertise a band if you don't want to do a write up about them and it's just kind of fun to see what other members of the clan are listening to.
On metal - I've been a metal fan for 17 years now and go to every live show I manage in my free time. Live gigs are pretty much the pinnacle of our music, never understood folks who pride themselves being metalheads while sitting at home listening to cds. I listen a wide variety of bands, ranging from heavy metal (Iron maiden, Blind guardian, Iced earth, Judas priest...), speed-thrash (Anthrax, Slayer, Sodom, Kreator, Annihilator...) to doom-death (Morbid angel, My dying bride, Carcass, At the gates, Vader, Cemetary, Amorphis (old stuff), Anathema (very old stuff), Nocturnus, Death, Dark tranquillity, Crematory, Moonspell, Tiamat (ancient stuff), Samael, The crown, Paradise lost...)
Proud hater of all things Opeth related. The most boring live act I've seen so far if we exclude no-name support acts.
Have any of you heard of a band called Ashes you leave? If you have, my brother will be happy. (He's the bass player, Luka) http://www.myspace.com/ashesyouleaveband
On MTG. I still play almost every week. Tournaments only, my casual days have long gone like any other geeky fantasy stuff I used to enjoy. I play extended (The rock, MBC, Noir and soon Tooth and nail), T2 (Korlash control, Monoblack rack, Sligh) and even enjoy Legacy (Burn, MBA, Red death) although we have no legacy tournaments in my area.
If I can choose a clan rank, I want "High priest".

Hi,
since I'm already member in Clan Mono-Black, I'd like to become a friend of this clan. I like death metal, melodic death metal, trash metal, viking metal and dark metal. My favorite band is a german band called "Eisregen", perhaps some of you know it. I also like Arch Enemy, Six Feet Under and Amon Amarth (and Rammstein, but I don't know if you can call that a metal band).
I'm 17 and in this thread, you can call me BD, or simply Black Dawn.
I play only mono-black decks and I am a mostly casual player.

21 years of age and a College DropOut atm (Considering going back when I gots teh moneyz), Play DnD whenever possible though havn't played any in like 3-4 months:mad: I absolutly LOVE Football (Real football, not Soccer) Redskins FTW.
Got into metal in about 8th grade so... 9 years ago? My tastes vary widely though I absolutly HATE doom/doom-death. Too slow for me.
Top bands at the moment are: Haste the Day, Unearth, Trivium, unepeXt, In Flames, All that Remains, Demons & Wizards, ect.
As for non-Metal Tastes I have a few odd ones like Kelly Clarkson:love:, Motzart, Mindless Self Indulgence, and I have a real taste for theme songs to good TV Shows lately
For Magic, I play mostly Casual but I go to every tournement I can. Love Blue Control, been my favorite archtype since I started (Oddly I'm a very non-Controlling person IRL). For Tournements I'll play any format availible though I suck at Type 1. Decent in Standard though I usually refuse to play netdecks.
Favorite Deck of all time is my dreaded Stasis Deck so much fun for me
Clan Title could be like Official Trade Wizard of Reign of Blood, as I'm quite active in the Trade forums got 40 iTrader Refs the other day

Set Fire To Flames, Tool, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Riverside, Porcupine Tree, U2 (first five albums only), Pink Floyd, Yes, Nightwish, Opeth, Pain Of Salvation, Godspeed You! Black Emporer, Agalloch, Ayreon, Dark Tranquility, Dream Theater, Camel, Caravan.
.
@Zombiemachine: What is is you don't like about Opeth - I'm assuming it's something like the soft interludes or the long drawn out prog parts?
Awesome list there Danny. Take out the U2 and that's a list I can fully get behind (besides Set Fire To Flames, who I've never even heard of.) The combination of prog and metal is perfect imo. That makes Opeth the perfect band for those not paying attention. I do see a band missing that I would expect to see up there - King Crimson. If you haven't heard these guys go buy In the Court of the Crimson King right now... and pick up some Jethro Tull while you're at it.
As far as Opeth goes... it's really a misplacement. They get labeled melodic death metal and people expect that from them. They would be better labeled as Prog metal or Symphonic Prog/melodic death fusion. They're fully a prog band hearkening back to their major influences King Crimson and Camel and they just so happen to include some melodic death metal in their music. That's how I see them. Having seen them in concert 3 times I have to say that they are awesome to watch live. I don't so much mosh as watch in rapt attention of their beautiful musicianship. I've never really seen a non-metal band in concert (well, that wasn't a supporting act that stretched the boundaries of metal in to metalcore bull*****) but I've seen a few Porcupine Tree concerts on video and the atmosphere of Opeth is much closer to that.
On a personal note, I'm going to be out of town for a few days and I have to leave soon so I'm going to try to update the first post from Bonnie's parents' house but that won't be for a few hours so if you don't see your info update don't panic, it will be soon.

@Zombiemachine: What is is you don't like about Opeth - I'm assuming it's something like the soft interludes or the long drawn out prog parts?
What I don't like about Opeth is...Opeth.
That band does nothing to me. Feels like some random band that plays anything other than metal and then mixes a few metal parts in there to please their old fans. Much like Nightwish. When I go to a metal concert, I want aggression, bodies flying around, noise....You know - fun. Not standing there for 10 minutes/song like in a bloody theater.
I know that right now Opeth is the "thing" among metal fans and I might catch a lot of flak over this, but I don't care, that's what opinions are for.
I respect their musical innovation, and my brother is an avid fan of theirs, but to each his own, just not my cup of tea.
I prefer old Katatonia, Edge of sanity and Bloodbath over Opeth any day. (The Opeth singer appeared in all of those bands, although he was surpassed by miles by Peter Tagtgren on Bloodbath's "Nightmares made flesh" when he left).
To add to this, I feel the same way about Lacuna coil. Pathetic band. I watched them perform as support to Moonspell in 1997 in Italy (I was on the security staff for that gig, imagine) when they first signed for Century media. They actually wanted to cancel the gig because their keyboard player had problems with his leg. The Moonspell guys went mad over this and threatened to contact their publisher if they don't quit with the crap. Finally they did appear on stage and sucked hard. Today, people adore the band, much like Nightwish and Evanescence. To me, they'll always remain spoiled brats unworthy of attention.
Don't take my rants as affronts to your tastes, that's just my opinions.

a little bit about me: metal fan for ~20 years now... i'm a big fan of various forms of metal; some of my favorite (metal) bands are slayer, voivod, coroner, meshuggah (hence the SN), anacrusis, morbid angel, pestilence, godflesh, sepultura, darkthrone, dimmu borgir... this list could get long, so i'll stop here. i listen to some other types of music as well; it has to either be very noisy (einsturzende neubauten, aphex twin, skinny puppy, sonic youth), have really twisty time-signatures (yes, king crimson, stereolab), or be one of the few rap artists i listen to (mostly redman and the guys from wu-tang). bands with kick-ass bass players also draw my attention.
oh, and feel free to IM me on AIM (exploit the weak) and say hey...
on the whole opeth/etc. thing: i like opeth, but i wouldn't say i'm a huge fan. evanescence are a bunch of lame-ass posers. sorry, but they're really freaking lame. at least lacuna coil has a little bit of balls to their sound.
i have one moonspell album - wolfheart. @ ZM: what other album of theirs would you recommend?
i have one moonspell album - wolfheart. @ ZM: what other album of theirs would you recommend?
Greetings mate, glad you dropped here.
First off, their debut (if you ignore demo material such as "Anno Satanae"), "Under the moonspell" was great. A bit too much black metal for my tastes but very good.
They followed it with "Wolfheart" which is simply amazing. "Irreligious" was their next album and while the music shift was evident, it is still one of the best goth/death albums to this day, imo. "Second skin" is pretty much alike. So far, everything is very good.
Next was their weird period. It begun with "Sin/Peccado" which is much wimpier and more dark/gothic. "Butterfly effect" followed and it was completely weird and unexpected. These two albums I didn't like at all. "Darkness and hope" was next and again it was much too weak and dark and had next to no aggression. This i like to call "The Century media effect". Century media has the tendency to turn all their signed artists into wimps - happened to Samael, Tiamat, Moonspell, Sundown and to a lesser extent to Dark tranquillity, to name a few. As a side note, Samael, Tiamat and Moonspell left the label after fulfilling the contract. Good for them.
"Antidote" was next, and while having great songs and finally moving in the right direction, I feel it suffers from much of the "darkness and hope" problems. It is still leagues better than the last three. Their last album is called "Memorial" and is quite something. Leaving CM is usually a good thing. I've seen them live again a few months ago and they kicked ***!
Hope this helps.
(check out their video "See you in my dreams" on Youtube, my favorite)
P.S.
My brother shared the stage with them last year and said they were amazing (I wasn't able to make the trip).
Well, I was a doom fan (and still am for the most part), not so much drone.
From the old stuff like St. Vitus, Count raven and Solitude aeturnus to the british bands like Cathedral and Paradise lost.
My dying bride still remains my favorite band, I guess, even if the last album "The line of deathless kings" wasn't exactly to my taste. I love the early Anathema and Cemetary (some of the best doom tunes ever) albums as well as some of the obscure bands such as Novembre's doom, God forsaken, Funeral and Dystrophy. Even Thergothon, probably the slowest band ever, found a place in my cd collection.
If I had to choose the single best doom album (and not a MDB one) than I'd say it would be Pyogenesis - "Pyogenesis" (also known as "Still burn in fire").

About Agalloch... I was wondering what exactly you disliked about the vocals of Agalloch? I am really not a huge fan of the growl lyrics either, but they are still one of my favorite bands. I think that John Haughm is an awesome vocalist and the way he layers normal vocals and growl vocals is very very good. Especially in their songs "In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion" and "You Were But a Ghost In My Arms". I'm not expert though, but if you haven't listened to those songs, I think you should check those out.
I have never personally heard drone metal, but it doesn't sound like it would be that interesting to listen to... from the description on wikipedia, though if someone can give a better description of it, it might be something to check out if someone can make it sound interesting...
On Nightwish, I've listened to Once, Oceanborn, and some of Century Child. I like a few songs on Once and barely any on Oceanborn. I liked them a lot when I first got in to metal, but now their a bit of a past phase. For symphonic metal, I definitely prefer Rhapsody, Epica, and Therion.
We've (Patrick and I) have been listening to Dream Theater's "Systematic Chaos", Opeth's "Orchid", and Blue Oyster Cult's greatest hits. But their just our most recent CD's. I think The Mantle is still on the top of my favorite metal albums though.

Yes, "Into the depths of sorrow" truly is awesome. It was followed by another great album called "Beyond the crimson horizon", get your hands on that one too. The following 2 albums were also pretty good, but they started to drift off as a band, never achieving the hights of their first two albums.
A decent career? I don't know about that, they had some problems, even had to cancel their European tours for lack of attendance (thus I never saw them live). A pity, they were great once. Their lead singer has replaced Messiah on the new Candlemass album. Sounds nice.
On the MDB thing, "The angel.." is their best known album frankly because it was soft enough to attract a large following of goth creatures. I prefer stuff like "As the flower withers", "Turn loose the swans", "The light at the end of the world" and "The dreadful hours". Check them out if you get the chance. Just to add, while being my favorite band in theory, they're quite disappointing live, and after seeing them 3 times I'm fed up with their sub-par live performances.

The only metal I've really listened to thoroughly is Dark Tranquility.
And SOAD, if it's considered metal.
Sup metal-ish dudes? :B
@LadyValkyrie: I've actually heard good things about Dream Theater; apparently they're kind of like Coheed and Cambria. I might check them out.
And regarding Nightwish... I see them as like a more popular Evanescence.
But I've heard good things about "Ghost Love Score", so I might listen to it...
...Once I can drag myself away from the few songs off the new Rocket Summer album that have been previewed so far (JULY 17 IS THE BEST DAY THIS YEAR). TRS is the most amazing band I have ever heard.
@Danny: Opeth, haha. My brother has one of their CDs. I might borrow it.
Nightwish are a good band, but i don't like the genre... They're too lyrical for my tastes. I'd rather listen to Lacuna Coil, even if aren't so much heavy metal like nightwish, but they still rocks. They're italian, after all.
Brrr, hate Lacuna coil. But still, Italy gave some decent metal bands over the years. I'm not talking about Luca Turilli and the ever present Rhapsody (of fire)/Labyrinth/Pegasus wave of Hammerfall look-alike stuff (although they're quite good), but old school bands such as Sadist, Desmodus, Necromass and Novembre. Also the very good death acts Cenotaph and later Necrosphere (where an acquaintance of mine, Andrea, played drums. Now he's in a Croatian band called Gorthaur's wrath). I'm glad the Italian scene is picking up. You also have quite a nice array of concerts and concert halls. So far I've been in Trieste, Babylonia hall near Biella, the stadium of Monza for the mighty Gods of metal open air and the famed Transylvania in Milano.

I don't really care for Nightwish. Liv Kristine, from Leaves' Eyes, has a better Voice and a better backing band (Atrocity). As for Lacuna Coil, Comalies was a good Cd but their other stuff is crap.
For Female lead Goth bands Leaves' Eyes is my fav. though I don't listen to it very much.

thanks for the solitude update seriously, their singer is singing for candlemass??? OMG candlemass was a favorite of mine growing up. i used to have their first three albums on vinyl; now i only have tapes of "epicus doomicus metallicus" and "ancient dreams", and i got the "new" album ("candlemass") off of iTunes. man, candlemass are freaking amazing. solitude's singer is one of the few (i think) that can pull off candlemass. now i really must pay attention to what's coming up with them!

@The descent
True as that may be, they're still a band that arose as followers to acts such as Stratovarius and Hammerfall. Like I said, Rhapsody is not bad, especially the guitar work, but nothing revolutionary as far as I'm concerned.
Perhaps we'll meet each other at Gods of metal the next year.
EDIT:
For the horror fans I will suggest other 2 titles I watched recently. Both are ghost-based. The first is called "Dark remains" and while not being overly original, it has some chilly, anxious moments and a decent plot. The second is a gem called "The abandoned". Now this is a real horror movie. It happens really rarely, after a hundreds and hundreds of flicks I've seen, that a movie gets to me, but this one did. Great story, good acting, fast paced, a LOT of chilling moments and bizarre ideas. Go see it.
@ZM: I think you should know that your Avatar creeps me out. I'm not creeped out easily either. Yes i know he's from a movie but still just looks wierd.
On Metal Topic: Do you guys consider "Nu-Metal" Metal?
I don't, It was basically a little louder and harder Radio Rock and now most of the Nu-Metal acts are gone (I for one am glad), cept the likes of Slipknot, Korn, Deftones, SOAD, ect.
Also whats everyone's take on the new fad, MetalCore?
I like some of the bands, some others are just blah, been there done that.
Lovers of metal all, we have joined forces to liberate our brothers and bring glory to the truth and freedom that is metal. Fists and devil horns in the air, brothers. THIS MOMENT IS OURS!!!

Casual Chaos Rules!
For our first thread, post the name you want us to call you by, any AIM or MSN screen names you can be contacted by and what your official clan title is.
Half the heart-shaking wonder that I feel,

(He's the bass player, Luka)
http://www.myspace.com/ashesyouleaveband
If I can choose a clan rank, I want "High priest".

since I'm already member in Clan Mono-Black, I'd like to become a friend of this clan.
Wise words:
Real name is Jeff but I awnser to Jeff, Lugh and Steve (Inside Joke IRL)
Favorite Deck of all time is my dreaded Stasis Deck so much fun for me
Clan Title could be like Official Trade Wizard of Reign of Blood, as I'm quite active in the Trade forums got 40 iTrader Refs the other day
Everyone should go play the "Song Title Word Association Game" In the Quick Reply Forums Fun stuff

Seriously, listening to non-metal bands is wasting precious time you could spend listening to stuff that really matters. Just my opinion.

(NL2)(In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion)(Agalloch)

And if I've offended you, I'm sorry, but maybe you need to be offended. But here's my apology and one more thing...

And if I've offended you, I'm sorry, but maybe you need to be offended. But here's my apology and one more thing...

For Female lead Goth bands Leaves' Eyes is my fav. though I don't listen to it very much.
see, this is exactly what i needed to hear. that softness was probably what turned me off to them. i'll look into the other cd's. thanks ZM

@The descent
Go see it.

I don't, It was basically a little louder and harder Radio Rock and now most of the Nu-Metal acts are gone (I for one am glad), cept the likes of Slipknot, Korn, Deftones, SOAD, ect.
