*yawn* Seems like I get less and less sleep these days. I'm naturally predisposed to sleep in the afternoons and stay up late into the night, and it's playing havoc with my work schedule. I want to take a nap after work most days, but I have things to do that prevent such. That means I just end up being sleepy in the afternoon, really awake at night, and really dog-tired in the mornings.
A big welcome goes out to SorryGuy. I'm digging the influx of new long-time posters recently. I'd suggest perhaps we could do with a round of introducing ourselves, since we haven't done that in some time, but then again, we do have the past RotWs still available for people new to the house.
I was wondering what was up with you lately. I can safely say that the years between high school graduation and the age of 30 can be really arduous for most people. It's that time in life when you're waiting fot the big, important things to happen and they don't seem to come along when they should. I'm really sorry about the Japan thing; when I heard about it I was livid because I know how important it is to you.
Also, HAHA Project A-ko! I watched that all the time when I was younger. That was when I thought shouting the name of your special attacks as you use them was the most awesome thing in the world.
Thanks for the concern. And really, you watched A-ko when you were younger? Haha, that must have been something else. If Japan has shown me one thing, it's that shouting attack names still hasn't gotten old, even after all this time. Gainax has been really amazing as far as that is concerned, with shows like Gunbuster/Diebuster and Gurren-Lagann bringing attack-shouting to a whole new level. Inazuma Double KICK!!!!
Angelina Jolie as Grendel's mother really jars me, I'm going to say it, and I probably won't see the movie for that reason. Grendel and his mother both are supposed to be monstrous and semihuman in most of the versions I'm familiar with, so the casting mystifies me.
In this most recent version of Beowulf, Grendel's mother is presented as a succubus type of demon. She gets her kicks by luring men into her den with promises of sex, treasure, and kingship, and then gets herself a son by them. That's about as much as I can say without spoiling the new version of the plot, but having Jolie as that character makes sense, given that she's supposed to be physically attractive. As for Grendel - well, he's just about one of the UGLIEST movie monsters I've seen for a good while. He's just squeam-inducing to look at.
@Mr. Stuff: Good luck with the job application. I don't know the specifics on the Japan thing to really say much about it, but it's really too bad to hear that you've been having trouble with real life. Stupid real life.
Stupid real life indeed. To make things short, I had secured a teaching job in Japan for a while (which is, of course, my dream job) and was preparing to move, but it was cancelled at the last minute due to shenanigans on their part. I've been kinda down about it, but the best I can do is pick myself up and get back in the race, so to speak.
Perfect place to find inspiration. I actually get a great deal from that avenue. Sounds like a promising show, and that is kind of how it works out, right?
A boost of confidence does wonders, so let me know if we or I can give you one, too. Your future has a lot of potential to be confident in.
Yeah. Thanks again, Mams. Shugo Chara, which translates rougly as "Guardian Character", is about finding one's would-be self, as the show terms it. In the case of the show, one's "would-be self" is a miniature chibi version of you that grants you silly magical transforming powers (and the main character has three of them), but regardless, the plot is about the main character helping people who are going through hard times or are depressed and not acting like their "true" selves. There was a similar situation to my own in one episode in particular that made me question myself, and realize a few things. I know I have the potential to do a lot of good things in life, but it's up to me to realize that potential.
Gawd, I had better stop before I start sounding like one of those sappy inspirational posters you see in offices.
So, a few things that have been keeping me amused lately: I discovered the idol group AKB48 on youtube, which a singing/idol group composed of 48 members. Songs in particular I have enjoyed include Aitakatta, Yuuhi o Mite Iruka, and Skirt Hirari. I have to admit that they are probably more fun to watch than to listen to, but Aitakatta, at least, is quite the catchy tune. I also had the opportunity to see the prelude for the anime Strike Witches during one of my sojourns to WSU. I have to say, it's really one of the most absurd anime I've ever seen, one that can only be described as the result of an extreme case of pandering to the so-called "fanboys". It involves a flying strike-force of magical girls with cat ears and tails, mecha propeller feet, and over-large rifles and machine guns. You can join in the absurdity by watching this - and don't say I didn't warn you.
It was well done for an eighties' cartoon. The voice acting was better than I expected it to be upon revisiting, and the animation was decent quality with all things considered.
If I had known what cosplaying was as a kid, I would have dressed up as She-Ra all the freakin' time. Heck, I probably would now if I thought I wouldn't look ridiculous.
yeah she-ra and he-man was definetly some of the cartoon series i actually watched like everyday when i could but I gotta admit though i dont think any modern television cartoon show measures up to the old classics IMO that are not japanese big time anime anyway.
nice! I like it. You make really good banners of my decks zaphod im pretty impressed!
Well its time for another legacy of the week!
This week I am covering threshold sligh i like to call it but the people on the source call it goyfsligh for an obvious reason but anyway the deck just about a month ago made the deck to beat(proven decks) section on the source of legacy. I however came up with a deck probably about 5 months ago thats very simliar to the one on the source. My threshold sligh list is on my Cecilia lynne adlehyde blog.
I am going to give Alacar some credit though for coming up with the deck name of Threshold Sligh because originally it was called RG threshold which isn't as nearly as classic in my opinion.
Fast Direct Damage Spells: These spells are used as potentially a triple role either filling up the grave for threshold, act as removal, or as a clock catalyst towards opponents.
Pyroclasm: Sweeps goblins, and with crypt you can remove nimble mongooses, werebears out of the way and also can be useful against meddling mage as well.
Kird Ape: Potentailly a 2cc creature for 2/3 is not bad at all but at worst case it can be used as a chump blocker.
Fledgling Dragon: Actually gives this deck a better long term game and can finish games as well if its resolved or not removed.
Werebear: Has great evasion and pretty much like a fledging dragon except less lethal in the late game.
Tarmogoyf: Its name says it all.
Engineered Explosives: great against empty the warren combo decks as well as gives you a much better game versus threshold and also fish as well.
Sword of fire and ice: gives this deck some card draw utility and making your creatures bigger also is a good thing.
Umezawa's jitte: Can potentially win you games versus any other aggro deck in the format.
Sideboard Choices:
Pyrostatic Pillar: Good against storm combo decks(e.g. iggy pop, TES, solidarity and Spanish inquisition.) and really good in conjunction with fast direct damage and cheap beats.
Krosan Grip: Cancels pithing needles, worships, tops, counterbalance, confinement and lots of others.
Pyro/red elemental blasts: Mainly for any blue based control deck.
Tormod's Crypt: Mainly for to stop or at least slow down cephalid breakfast, ichrorid bridge, and loam based decks.
Pithing needle: stops sensei's divining tops, aether vials, wastelands, belcher, and survival of the fittest.
Now here is the deck list that they posted as a proven deck in legacy on the source that made top 8 at a 50+ player tournament. Where you can win like 2 playsets of any original dual land you choose or something to that extent.
Essentially this deck has more burn then my deck but however my deck is more aggro-control orientated with really useful utility cards against blue based threshold and other aggro decks in the format that are jittes and sword of fire and ice as well as engineered explosives. I must say that quirion dryad will probably be a great addition though with all of the burn the deck has but probably less effective in my own build.
Overall though my deck and the source deck list are about the same.
The sideboards for both decks look surprisingly almost identical though and to tell you the truth I didn't even look at what they had in the side board since they didnt post the SB in the initial post but oh well.
Well thats all for this weeks legacy of the week hopefully ill get up a couple of more legacy of the weeks before december or when december roams around I am going to try anyway. Enjoy everyone!
@Zaphod: The blending on that banner is really nice. I love what you did with the coloration and the runes from the Brainstorm. The only real issue I have with it (which I must say is an issue with most of your banners) is the lack of a border. Borders generally make banners look nicer because they look less like a random piece of art and more like something that's enclosed and separated from the rest of the thread. Sometimes you can use complicated, fancy borders, but even a simple 1 pixel black border can often be enough.
For example, look at my current banner. If I just let the Teferi and the blue background run to the edge it would look very odd and not self-contained at all. However, the simple 1 pixel black border with a 1 pixel white border inside really sets it off from everything else.

good point there krashbot of course I myself don't even make banners but mr. stuff, sakura, and alacar all made some really fantastic banners of Cecilia Adlehyde for me which i still love.
Anyway i might join the new magic coffeehouse league tonight and maybe i can get some gaming in with the other fellow coffehousers which i think are fun members to play against. The players i played against like Alacar, mamelon, ungenni kemo, sakura, IS, and lilly are all competent players from the precon league. But I occasionally play alacar and shadowfox in casual and they are good at what they do in magic.
Krashbot, ethersphere: That's the reaction I expected. However, it is faulty. The Gutter is not some private organization, there are some three-hundred members I believe. And there is nothing secret about it, anyone can request entrance. Because of these numbers, it really isn't fair to lump everyone into the same group. Einsteinmonkey, for instance, posts there often but also is a very productive member in every other part of the site.
At any rate, thank you all for the welcome. It seems very warm.
SorryGuy: I'm sure you know we're reasonable people, and it's easy to generalize. But there are certain eccentric personalities that have made themselves known from the Gutter that overshadow the other, more innocent people from there, that's all.

As a result of this, the gutter generally gets the image of the members who, in the eyes of those outside the gutter, are simply around to troll and cause drama.
On a completely unrelated note:
@Yukora: I didn't mention this in my last post, but glad to know it was all just some sick, twisted kind of joke.
I hope everything works out for you and good luck.
I have good news though there is a solid chance that I will be able to go back to school sometime next year to become an pharmacy tech then work from there to become a licensed pharmacist which is a stable and good paying career.
Anyway I just wanted to say goodnight to everyone im probably going to head to bed in like an hour or something since i have work tommorrow at around 9am its a good thing that its a short shift. I also have thanksgiving off and I thought i will be working that day but I guess not which is pretty cool. Anyhow have a goodnight and sweetdreams everyone!
Cecilia's Magic Crest Edit: By the way Strongbad says hi.
Here's a topic that hasn't been on the Coffeehouse in a while: Transgenderism. I saw the CSI episode where a MtF trans-woman was murdered for having male genitals, and the investigators dove into the trans community, and it just made me feel familiar pangs of points Sakura, Mamelon, and Lilly have made in the past. It still makes me wince when I remember that approximately half of all transgendered people don't make it over the age of 30, and an unnatural death (suicide, homicide) is the leading cause of death for transpeople.
Then of course, I went downstairs and caught Meet Joe Black. Oh Brad Pitt.. when will you learn.
SorryGuy, you don't have to prove anything to me regarding the Gutter, really. I mean, it's a place I never intend on going so in the end my opinion doesn't hold much weight, if any.
I love Meet Joe Black. I never thought I'd like the movie but I watched it out of curiosity one day and it really grabbed my heart strings. Also it doesn't hurt that Brad Pitt is walking around in a suit the whole time >_>;;

@alacar: yeah thats a pretty freaky statistic alacar but we will always pray and wish lilly, mamelon, and sakura the best.
Anyway its 7:37am where I am probably going to get ready for work in a little while its a good thing i have thanksgiving off and today isnt going to be a an 8 hour shift which is good. I do work about 38 hours this week though which is blah but oh well. I am going to take off for now see you all and have a good one everyone.
So.. it seems that Morningtide promises to have Classes to go along with the Races of Lorwyn--Wizard, Warrior, Rogue, Soldier, and Shaman. Intriguing. They should have brought back Cleric..
blue man group is epic...I wish I was able to see them when they were in town...oh well.
Alacar: I'm having a hard time finding a skin color for Jhoira. I want her to look caucaisian, and the picture isn't helping in that regard. the color either makes her look too white, or else it makes her look like teferi's sister. as soon as I can find a balance, I'll finish it and get it to you.

Charm_Master: She's white, maybe with a little bit of a tint, but if you look at cards like Tinker and Slow Motion, you can see she's white. It's Teferi who's the black guy
HOLY.... FFXII:RW is out!!!!im DLing it right now!!!(yes i will buy a legal copy once its released here), I feel so happy (now if only FFTA2 was also out i would be the happiest FF fanboy ever) Hoorray for not sleeping!!!!

Eh. I'm more excited for Archaic Sealed Heat right now, myself. It seems to play very closely to a little Japan-only gem from back when Square didn't suck called Bahamut Lagoon. Maybe Sakaguchi doesn't suck hard after all =)
Although FFTactics A2 looks like it's going to be fun to play. Not sure when it comes out, though.
Ah yes ASH i keep hearing good things... but since i dont know if an english version will be released i am not thinking about it (no point setting myself up for dissapointment).
Oh ether i forgot to mention, Squeenix:p hasnt given a date yet for DQ9 i keep reading the hype and i really want to try this game but seeing its not sure when in '08 itll come out (IF its in 08, some rumors hint at 09!!!) im trying to put that in the back of my mind (just though i should mention this bit of news to a fellow RPG gamer even if it is sad news:D)
Edit: Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is scheduled for release in the american market somewhere in january 2008 (i think its on the 27th)
Yeah, DQ9 is going to take a while. Keep in mind it'll be the biggest and possibly most epic game on the DS, encompassing at least two game cards, so I figured it'd be a bit of a wait. Thankfully Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors comes out very soon for the Wii, so DQ lovers will have something to tide them over.
It's uneven - closer to the left side than to the right.
I'm not sure what program you're using, but if you just do a "select all", then "shrink" the selection by a few pixels and use "stroke selection", you should be able to get it perfect every time. Groovy banner, btw.
So, any fellow Americans have Turkey Day plans? I have tomorrow and Thursday off, and I know at least on Thursday we're going up to visit my stepdad's parents. Good food abounds, but I've never been much one for socializing with people who share few of my interests. Luckily for me I'll have my laptop to take with me so I can keep myself entertained.
@Zaphod: I think the border on that banner is a little plain. It's a certain style of plain that definitely looks better than no border at all, but if you're going to put that line around the inside with part of the image outside of it, I would make the outer part of the image different in some way. Maybe blur it a little or make the colors a little more or less vivid or something. Also, if you're going to do that, you should bring the line in one or two more pixels (at least). Alternatively, you could just have a border that goes all the way to the edge.
That said, what you have does look pretty good, although as Mr. Stuff pointed out, it is a little closer to the left side than the right. I think the way to fix that is to make sure you have the banner at it's final size (in this case 450x150) and not at a higher resolution before you add the border. That way you don't run the risk of having it move or blur when you resize the banner.
@Mr. Stuff: I don't think I'm doing anything for thanksgiving which means I'll likely be sitting around in front of my computer for a while. At least I'll be online to talk to people around here.
@Alacar: I know that, I'm trying to get the color right. I think you misunderstood me...the color either makes her look too white or makes her look like she's Teferi's sister.
in other news, I had to chase down my little sister this afternoon to keep her from running away.
Did I mention she's trying out for the high school track team? as a sprinter?
I'd rather not go into any more detail about it...

Well, the thing is, I always work with a 450x150 file from start to end, so I didn't resize the final at all:p
Huh, interesting. Try zooming in really far (I usually go 600-800%) and selecting the 448x148 rectangle in the center (so everything but one pixel all the way around the outside). Then deselect the 446x146 rectangle in the middle of that (so you have just that 1 pixel wide rectangle selected). Do all of that with the rectangle marquee tool to make sure everything is straight and does what you want. Then just fill in that area (preferably on a new layer on top of everything else) with whatever color you want the line to be.
That should insure that it's one pixel wide and one pixel from the edge all the way around.

@Yukora: I didn't mention this in my last post, but glad to know it was all just some sick, twisted kind of joke.
I hope everything works out for you and good luck.

I don't care if I was framed for murder if I only got a warning I would let it go.

I love Meet Joe Black. I never thought I'd like the movie but I watched it out of curiosity one day and it really grabbed my heart strings. Also it doesn't hurt that Brad Pitt is walking around in a suit the whole time >_>;;

Not that many here care, but the newest Final Fantasy XI expansion releases today. Hooray!
And yeah, Freerice.com is awesome. I've been on it off and on for the past two or three weeks. You have to devote some serious time, though.
Blue Man Group on the 24th. Hooray!
My helpdesk should you need me.
Alacar: I'm having a hard time finding a skin color for Jhoira. I want her to look caucaisian, and the picture isn't helping in that regard. the color either makes her look too white, or else it makes her look like teferi's sister. as soon as I can find a balance, I'll finish it and get it to you.

At least I'll be online to talk to people around here.

in other news, I had to chase down my little sister this afternoon to keep her from running away.
Did I mention she's trying out for the high school track team? as a sprinter?
I'd rather not go into any more detail about it...
