Well I am going to head off playing some video games but ill be back sometime later. See you all soon!
I agree with Glurman actually. A truly selfless person would feel no need to do anything. Even a feeling of good from helping someone is still personal gain...it is just a less tangeable and more honorable form of gain.
It may be a cynical view, but it is very accurate.

While it might be true for some people, putting everyone into that category is simply wrong. I've seen a lot of sacrifices that parents and loved ones have made for our family, and there's nothing but love and care behind them.
Mankind is capable of making sacrifices for the benefit of another, and that is called love. I believe hen someone gains that capacity, they are truly an adult.

You are failing to see the gain from these actions.
People feel pride in the children and feel a sense of responsibility.
Doing something for someone out of love is still selfish. People do bad in the name of love as much as good. We get something personal out of the action. We make ourselves feel worthy of the feeling, we feel good for showing the loved one we care, we feel important for having a part of making their life better. If we got nothing personal, or truly felt within we would get nothing personal from the action; we would not act. In fact, were there truly nothing in it for us, we would not love at all.
I don't think there's any specific point at which someone becomes an adult - it's certainly not a gestalt event, where at one moment you're a child, and the next, you're irrevocably an adult. Rather, I think life slowly moulds us into being an adult.
Yeah, pretty much what he said.
I'm not sure about this. Children, even quite young children, are perfectly capable of considering other's needs before their own. They simply do not act upon that consideration, viewing their own needs as more important.
Also, this definition of adulthood would exclude severely autistic individuals from ever being considered as adults, which is something I'm not at all comfortable with.
Then a selfless person would never be able to exist within a society.
Also, that theory requires the personal gain to be the major, or even sole, motivating factor behind every single action that an individual takes. Holding a door open for someone who's carrying a heavy object? Done solely so you can hear the thank you. Helping a mother lift her child's buggy onto the train before the doors slam shut? Again, only done to make you feel good.
Assuming that people only act selfishly isn't cynical - it's nihilistic to a level which Nietzsche would have despaired at.
And we gain from these actions. Just because the gain seems small or is intangeable does not make it non-existant. It is still a gain.
The expression; "Do onto others as you would have done onto you"
Often the very ideology and root of why we need to help others and treat them well. Because we expect and hope to receive good in return.
It does not matter what your motivation is, if you have one then your act is selfish. If you have no motivation, then you cannot act.
Selfish =/= evil, or bad, or anything. It is the act itself, and the payout desired. That are where evil lays.
The maturity as a human being comes from realizing that the world around you is better because of good you do, and thus better for you. From realizing that the better you treat people, the better relations you have and stronger bonds. You still desire and still want, but you realize you are happier and more complete when your actions have made the world around you a little better.
Selfishness isn't acting with your own goal or satisfaction in mind. It's selfish when your own goal or satisfaction is weighted considerably more important than the the goals or satisfaction of other people, even when those other peoples' satisfaction is more closely related to the matter at hand.
It frequently makes sense to put yourself first. If a decision mostly affects myself, then it's right for me to consider my own needs first. But a selfish person puts themself first even when it makes more sense not to, such as if a decision more strongly affects someone else.
A selfless person isn't someone who always puts others first, or who has no personal goals at all. Rather, a selfless person is someone who balances their own needs and wants with the needs and wants of the people around them in a way that is fair and harmonious.
It's my feeling that many classical criticisms like the deconstruction of altruism ("people only help others because it makes themselves feel good, and thus is selfish") come from the use of a superficial or dysfunctional definition of selfishness. Helping others because it makes you feel good isn't selfish, especially since feeling good usually isn't the only motive.

There is partial truth in that statement Mams. You are much more equiped to discuss this.
Under that much more narrow definition of the word "selfish", it is better to state then that a person cannot be selfless than that a person always acts selfishly.
Actually Sakura you are missing Mamelon's point. What Mama's is saying is that applying the word "selfish" in the cases you are talking about is invalid. In other words, you're mis-defining the word.
I'll also point out that defining a word so that it loses all meaning should be a logical warning sign that the definition is false.

Good afternoon/morning coffeedrinkers and tea-tasters. Monday sucks. I woke up an hour late and looked at the clock, so knew I was an hour late, and went back to sleep anyway. I don't even have to stay up insanely late on Saturday night to wreck my sleep habits for the weekend anymore.
@sakura, I've saved your avvy, because pr0ns are delicious.
This is a truly fabulous little shop, I must SAY. Can I just tell you, I was pleased as pop to find that there is a place like this on the internet. Fabulous food, fabulous coffee, and not a single calorie between them! Oh, I just may have to have my doctor remove my jaw wires, it all looks so good! Might I get a delicious scone, and make sure you slather it in ALL SORTS of butter!
My name is Blaine, but you can call me Blaine. I enjoy fashioning couture our of my mother's linens, pretending to be European, and falling down the stairs for attention! And can I just tell you, I'm QUITE good at it. I'm a fashionable gay man trapped in the body of a Greek God, but I identify as female because society tells us women are better looking. I'm just barely 22 years of age, but if your profile pic is suspicious, I'm actually 72 and missing a leg!
So, what do you all do around here? I see you are a fan of Magic the Gathering. I too enjoy playing magical card games, but by "magical card games", I mean trying to pay off one credit card with another without destroying my credit rating!

I don't want to drag this on if everyone is done with it, but I feel as if the biggest leap in the all-actions-are-selfishly-motivated argument is the step from 'when we do nice things we feel good/reap social benefits/fit into society better' to 'these benefits are the sole motivator for doing nice things.' I have trouble with the jump required to conclude that every action that has positive ramifications for the actor (or possible positive ramifications, such as playing the lottery) is entirely selfishly motivated, especially in cases where the choice was made over one with more obvious benefit to the actor.
Of course, it's rather difficult to prove much of anything about this sort of thing or even to produce experimental evidence due to the difficulty of quantifying things like 'good feelings'.

[16:23] Alacar Leoricar: maybe if you do it'll make the porn more meaningful
When presented with what is seeming to be viewed as a common interpretation of the word "Selfish" I presented my view within those bounds. While it can be said that a person can be non-selfish, it cannot be said that a person can truly be selfless. At heart, we have our own intrest.
We may perceive us putting others ahead of ourselves, but in action we really cannot. It is that what we as an individual gain is beyond our measurement. It is intangeable. We do not understand or see it as a gain. But it is.
99% of what we gain is such an integrated part of our being and life in general we just take it for granted.
I care less whether you all agree with me at this point. This discussion is creating a rather odd rift it shouldn't. People are afraid to admit that when they hold a door for someone that they do it because they gain. Sorry.
Of course!!! no wonder it seemed so familiar (i just saw the cirque di solei special not so long ago)
Well, you see, Alacar...

This is preposterous. Sorry, NO. No one is denying the VERY EVIDENT fact that altruistic behavior can have a positive emotional or social benefit for the person exhibiting it. We are stating that your completely unfalsifiable, blanket statement that ALL action born of altruistic intent is deeply rooted in trying to satisfy one's own self is an incredibly flimsy statement. So don't sit around and imply that everyone else is just in deep denial about some universal truth when you yourself are just taking a completely cursory glance at what YOU perceive to be reality and making a judgment that everyone is supposed to accept as an unquestionable given.

If there were even an iota of sincerity behind this statement, you would have not felt the need to step in and make a parting comment that could basically be boiled down to "You are all just afraid to admit I am right about this."

If your argument is inherently unable to be proven, then perhaps you should refrain from initially describing them using words such as "accurate".

Actually my parting comment was primarilly to maintain a friendship I enjoy. I may not talk directly to you alot sweety, but I still value you and your ideas.
I feel my idea is accurate, as accurate as anything can be. We live in a world where daily things which are believed truths are proven otherwise. They are accurate to within my views of the world. Your beliefs are accurate within your views of the world.
My stance cannot be proven no more than your own. So I say end the discussion before it causes more bad than good, because that is all it can do. I will believe what I believe, and you will believe what you believe. It is just one of those things one cannot simply change their minds over.
I can say however; when I realized this "truth" that I believe in, it made my life alot easier. It made decision making alot easier. It was like an epiphany in my life, and created a major turning point.
Oh, it's funny you should mention that. Boyfriend and I have been talking about having children, because my kidneys have had just about all they can TAKE. However, it looks like my gynocologist put in the wrong plumbing the last time I let him take a tinker down there... so I can't have any of my own, but do have both HOT and COLD running water.
Long story short, I have been considering it. I sort of see myself as being a real pillar of beauty and grace, just like Angina Jolie. However, I'm faced with some really hard decisions about adopting- primarily when it comes to deciding on a color. I'm an autumn, and that really limits my options. What sort of palette do you Maltans run in these days? Do you have any swatches? And perhaps more importantly, would you be willing to live in a pet carrier until I can move out of my grandmother's studio apartment?
Our palette is similar to that of people in the south of italy, No, I don't and I'm not really sure...does it have an A/C at least? And some nice perfumes?
OOOH, I just LOVE Italy. I tell you, if I could, I would ram my foot all the way in that big boot and wear it everywhere, I simply WOULD.
Well, when I say "pet carrier", what I mean is something more comparable to a box full of paycheck stubs and Wendy's receipts, but I'm sure we could poke some holes in it and maybe tie a paper fan to the wheels of Grandmother's wheelchair if that suits you.

I too enjoy playing magical card games, but by "magical card games", I mean trying to pay off one credit card with another without destroying my credit rating!

yes and i love the idea of my br goblins even more now...
well its good to know the privacy settings will be restored... i would really suck to lock everysingle entry into private mode just because of a few selected ones you wanted to keep with your friends alone (and vice versa)
i noticed and i have the disturbing feeling i recognize that face for some reason.... who is it????
now im normally not a nosy person but this kind of lines hook me better than a fish gets hooked on worms...still i know its disrespectful to ask for this kind of things... so ill await for both you and alacar to continue on it to see if it gets disclosed.
i finished luminous arc already... loved it so much.. it was just oozing that sense of humor i came to know and love and has been missing since thousand arms
"Kai-Ban-Sai!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" (cookie who tells me who says this line...double cookie if you also give me the self given title of said character :p)
Edit: Good morning Snoop (its 12:30am here:p)
Of course, it's rather difficult to prove much of anything about this sort of thing or even to produce experimental evidence due to the difficulty of quantifying things like 'good feelings'.
It seems to me, the new goblins will cause more than one complaint to be made by those who are tired of Goblins being the uber-tribe that they were in Onslaught.
They aren't up entirely yet, but I've managed to make a setting that is comfortable for me for the time being. I'm more accessible to the public than I have been in the past, but I can still keep some people from reading, which is good.
It is Yoko Onno.
Well, you see, Alacar...
Right, it's a leap that has to intentionally ignore a lot of variables that cannot be reasonably determined to work at all.
Hahahaha... oh Snoop... you silly. Alacar, not a virgin? Hahaha, do go on.
Sorry.
Cute gimmick Photon...It is absolutele fabulous.
well like i said i will not push the subject...if alacar deems it ok to reveal then it will be revealed if not then i really have no right to demand
Im still remarkably amazed that im begining to loose my fear whenever i see you post...:p and im also starting to understand the unspoken tones used when you write so it no longer seems like a "heavily loaded insult towards me for being such a poor poster" type of post but rather your own way of getting your points across...its actually quite nice since i realized your not as bad as i took you under first impressions
Didn't I tell you?
If this were an easy discussion, then philosophers would have answered it ages ago.
We disagree, simple.
I value your friendship to much to push this Photon, and I have better things to do (work).
I believe A, you believe B. A could be right, B could be right, C-Z could be right. It is one of those ideas which can neither be proven one way or the other.
Indeed you did but back when you did i still ad that unatural fear of you so i didnt believe it since then my will saves have increased and now i can survive if i decide to take 10:D
i will not comment on the nature of actions as i belief this is a topic bound to produce arguments and maybe even heated tempers to flare... and i do so hate confrontations like this... well its 1am... gotta sleep... Good night photon...sakura...coffehouse....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
*Sep logs out*
See ya all in 10 hours
If your argument is inherently unable to be proven, then perhaps you should refrain from initially describing them using words such as "accurate".
I'm not really sure why.

OOOH, I just LOVE Italy. I tell you, if I could, I would ram my foot all the way in that big boot and wear it everywhere, I simply WOULD.
Well, when I say "pet carrier", what I mean is something more comparable to a box full of paycheck stubs and Wendy's receipts, but I'm sure we could poke some holes in it and maybe tie a paper fan to the wheels of Grandmother's wheelchair if that suits you.
