I dread 9/11 each year now but not because of what happened on this day in history (I definitely know what it was like that day as I was at college then with a bunch of native NYC'ers and couldn't stop freaking out...) but more because of what this day has come to represent - an excuse. An excuse for every bit of legislation that comes to strip any rights congress/the president feels necessary. Not to mention for the last 5 years prior a complete and utter media bomb. When the day came around it was an obsession to make every story related to the events. I feel this is a disgrace and dishonor to the people that lost their lives that day... and frankly it makes me angry.
It is nice to see, however, that I've seen VERY little in regards to the day - the only thing I've seen referencing the day was C-SPAN's short coverage of the House which I stumbled upon by channel surfing. And that was maybe 15 minutes long.

the patriot act;bad? YES. a step towards totalitarianism. most definitely not.
I agree to a point. I think - eventually anyway - people will get sick of not having rights and things will happen to change the government. It's tough to say for sure but I put odds on democracy here.
People kept comparing the Patriot Act to 1984 when it came out, and while it indeed is very, very flawed, the intentions started good. Or at least that's what it looked like on the surface. There have been some minor good things to come out of the government leaking into citizens' rights, but not enough to justify all the crap that comes with it.
Agreed with ItSo on the crap that flies on 9/11. Part of me wishes it was just another regular day; if that attack hadn't happened, my dad would be retired by now.
Gah, I'm about to punch my computer. I spent about an hour and a half typing up the AotW, adding all kinds of nice extras with descriptions, and a much longer write-up than usual, and now the copy of IE that I had it open in is locked up. I was just about to save it by copying/pasting to a text file, too... T___T. If worst comes to worst, I will write it up again, but... I am not happy.
Edit:
Yep, it's officially gone. T___T
Now I need somebody to post so I can try writing it again. Sigh.
Changing your diet and activity level is crucial to any physical change you may wish to make in life. A properly balanced diet and metabolism enables your body to actually make changes more efficiently and noticeably.
Also, it just makes sense that if you need to increase onbe hormone in your body, you also need to remove unneeded amounts of its opposite. Eating food full of Testosterone will definately hinder any feminine growth you desire. My aim is to mostly remove meat from my diet (I likely will still have the odd seafood, or treat myself to something once in a while.) My daily diet will be Testosterone free as I can make it. All meat will have testosterone in it, regardless of whether it is added or not. This cannot be helped since it is a naturally occuring biological component. That said, all Meat also has Estrogen as well. I plan to do some research into where that balance lies.
Whether a meat is predominately harvested from malee or female members of the species matters as well. Chicken always comes from Hens for instance, so if you can get some Green produced chicken it should be good for transitioning since it will have more Estrogen in it than testosterone and have no additives.
While you probably know more about it than I do, it's best to be careful before relying too much on hormones in food for anything. Many hormones that are physically ingested in food are simply broken down; they aren't absorbed into the body to operate just as human hormones. Some function entirely different and can have opposite the intended effect; for example, many plant estrogens, such as those in soybeans, are many orders of magnitude weaker than human estrogen. Rather than acting as a boost in estrogen to the body, they simply block the receptors for estrogen on the membranes of cells, effectively -reducing- estrogen effects on the body. Some animal hormones mimic the effects of testosterone and estrogen in some ways, but may not have exactly the desired effect in large quantities, since those two hormones are responsible for many things beyond the appearance of desirable or undesirable secondary sex characteristics.
That said, cutting meat from your diet is a fine idea for many health and environmental reasons.
Pay special attention to this one, because it's a little different...
ANIME DORAMA OF THE WEEK
Series: Train Man Genre: Romance, Drama, Comedy Episodes: 11 + Movie
This is the story of a hopeless nerd, the girl he loves... and a forum.
No, it's not the coffeehouse. It's called Densha Otoko (Train Man), and it's one of the most inspiring and heartfelt new romances to come out of Japan in recent memory.
Densha, as he comes to be called, is a self-described "average anime otaku". He lives at a relative's home with his collectables and a room to himself. He works an average job, and gets yelled at at work by his boss. He dreams of one day meeting a girl, but his shyness preempts any attempt at conversation before it's even started. He gets trampled on, kicked when he's down, and nobody even remembers to get him a cake on his birthday. Living such a lonely life, he even entertains thoughts of suicide, although never seriously.
One day, Densha (Yamada Tsuyoshi) finds himself on a train, sitting across from a girl he would love to meet, if only he were able to speak to her. His reverent thoughts are interrupted by a middle-aged drunken passenger, who begins making lewd comments and harrassing the women. Yamada somehow finds the courage to stand up to the assailant, although it nets him nothing but a bloody nose and a trip to the floor. The girl is impressed, though, and after the drunk is taken away by security, she asks Yamada for his address. He gives it to her, but is too shy to say anything else, and he leaves without so much as her name.
Returning home depressed once again, Yamada logs into a forum on the net to relate his story. There is little interest at the time. Some forum members even doubt his story. Later, though, after he recieves a package from the girl, along with a delivery slip containing her cell number - things begin to change. What should Yamada do? Call her? But how - she'd probably hate him anyway. He logs back in to ask for advice, and this time the response picks up. Forum members from around Japan come together to witness Yamada's story, and aid in giving him advice on everything from where to go on a first date to how to not look like an otaku. So begins one man's story of finding redemption.
To get right to the point - this is a must-watch series if romances interest you at all. It is cute, endearing, heartwarming, and funny, and it taps into our inherent love of rooting for the underdog in a big way. The characters are vivacious and brilliant, and special mention should go to the more than 35 different actors cast as forum members who follow Yamada's story. From the crazed Tigers fan to the victim of domestic abuse who is inspired by Yamada's courage, they represent the spirit of the story, carrying many of the comedic and dramatic moments.
On a more personal note: The first time I saw what this story was about, I smiled. This is, basically, us, and what the coffeehouse is about, and what we do. We come here to hear each other's stories, and find inspiration, just like Yamada. I'm sure if you watch this for very long you'll find yourself cheering for Yamada just like any other member of the coffeehouse.
Trivia:
The animated opening for Densha Otoko was created by studio GONZO as a tribute to the Daicon IV Opening Animation originally done by studio GAINAX. It contains the same music, along with a similar bunny girl sporting rocket-powered carrots. Both studios are listed in the credits. The bunny girl, part of a fictional anime that Yamada is a fan of in Densha Otoko, was later made into a real anime by studio GONZO - Getsumen to Heiki Miina.
Extras:
Daicon IV Opening Animation - If you've never seen Darth Vader fighting a bunny girl with lightsabers, you're in for a real treat. Created by studio GAINAX for the anime convention Daicon IV, it provides the inspiration for the Densha Otoko opening.
Densha Otoko Animated Opening - Created by studio GONZO as an homage to the Daicon IV animation. It features the same song, and the bunny girl later went on to star in her own anime, Getsumen to Heiki Miina.
Anybody on dialup is excused, but the rest of you really should watch Train Man - I know you'll love it. It's a brilliant show. I wouldn't have made a special exception for it if it wasn't worth it. Every time you don't watch Train Man, a puppy cries. Please, think of them. o_o;
I will give that show a go, Mr. Stuff. The GAINAX animation made me smile bright, definitely. It looks great.
Psssst... Samurai Soldier.. that last post.. was a little.. icky-poo.
So.. I was nice and I finished a monoblack Korlash/Coffers deck for Sakura.. and I realize she's been playing MTGO more than I have.
Still, she's gonna pay me back, it's all good.
I've been watching Scrubs (again), and the show gets a bit of a rattle for killing its patients left and right.. and I've made an effort to count how many people die in the show: 7 so far, and I'm on episode 18. Pretty consistent.
Hey, crap.. that was totally a blog post.
We need more.. debate.. in the house. More discussion, rather than 'hey folks, here's what's up with me.'

You know, anyone who faces you in round six of an elimination event is likely a decent player and has a decent well thought out deck. The deck is designed for the nmeta well, that is why it wins. "ZOMG mise Tarmy didn't make this n00b skoop, now wat dos I do?!?!"
@Stuffy : I've heard of that show. Keep forgetting to watch it. Been wanting to for ages.
@Alacar : not my fault I play more. You can play whenever you want.
The Korlash deck we finished is nutso. When you you manage to Reap and Sow entwined, Then still Consume Spirit for 25 (with a massive Korlash in play) all on turn 6, people cwy
@Al
Yeah, the Gainax video has just about as many pop culture references as they could cram into a 5 minute video. You've got Darth Vader/Star Wars in there, Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, all kinds of old kaiju monsters from Japanese films, sentai wariors, Space Battleship Yamato, a valkyrie from Robotech, and the list goes on. There's another one for Daicon III which features the Starship Enterprise and Godzilla, among others, being destroyed by a little girl.
I just got off the phone with the Time-Life people in Japan... things are looking good! I'm beside myself with excitement. There was talk of mailing me a contract to sign (which I then mail back) in order to get a working visa established. I'll know more over the next few days, and I have a lot of questions for them, but I got the general impression that there weren't that many other applicants for the job and that they liked me. The guy even started talking to me, since he knew I liked anime, about how the local area is where the long-running anime Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro is based on. Ha! To think, they're trying to sell me on having an otaku-friendly town. This is good stuff.
@Sakura
It's a wonderful show. The main character reminds me of, well, me. Loves anime, spends too much time on forums, too shy to talk to women, crappy job (although that may be changing). I can see a lot of my own life in his story - but then, I think a lot of us can, because he's one of those "everyman" characters that lots of people can relate to. That's part of what makes it so fun to watch - you can really get behind the characters, and cheer for their successes and pity their failures.
You would be amazed how consistant this deck is. Takes alot of thinking and math to play well. Almost every game I get out 3x Coffers and an Urborg into play rather fast. Lots of fun to play. Actually very hard to stop as well with the Mind Sludge and the Pact. Pretty much everything you play past turn 4 says "Counter/Handle me or die!!!"
Edit : Knew I was forgetting something. Adding in the Reap and Sow
Blah... I spent way too much time making an entry for the new site banner. Combined with not getting enough sleep last night... I'm about to pass out, or something. *yawn*
I was gonna ask about the one Phage in that deck, Sakura, but I guess if you love it that much... I do like the one pact of negation in there, though. Keeps them on their toes.
Hey everyone. And a Happy New Year to all of the Hebrew types here.
I'm gonna try to post a lot for the next two days. On Friday I'll be heading down to DC to visit some colleges. So I'll be trying to make up for my 2-3 day absence.
@Stuff: Red and black isnt really the MTGS color scheme. Try putting it in blue.
EDIT: Maybe something like this?
EDIT2: The Editering: How do you all feel about the teaching of the Bible as literature in high schools. We started it today and a girl in my class, albeit she is known for being really uppity in class, but she said that the school is hating on her Jewish faith. Any thoughts?
The Bible in high school: This is a spiky subject, and perfect for discussion! Thanks Kaylei. Personally, I think that if it were done right, the bible and its stories could be excellent content for English/Lit teachers to analyze and discuss with their students, so long as they don't preach the message of the book, but allow the students to draw their own conclusions. Secondly, students shouldn't be trying to convince others of the message either.
So.. here's my picket slogan: 'THE BIBLE: TEACHING NOT PREACHING'
How do you all feel about the teaching of the Bible as literature in high schools. We started it today and a girl in my class, albeit she is known for being really uppity in class, but she said that the school is hating on her Jewish faith. Any thoughts?
If you ask me, religion and education don't mix for the most part. This is definitely one of those things. It's too hard at this point in time to seperate the morals part of the book with the literature contained within.
@Mr Stuff: I agree with ep. on the banner. Blue is definitely the better route to go but even that might not work. You gotta keep in mind the majority of the users use the Light or normal skins on the site. Very few use the dark skin and having a black banner mix with a light/white design doesn't work very well IMO.

The Bible is obviously of enough historical significance that it seems wrong to ignore it entirely in a high school, but that's history (or anthropology, or sociology, or religion class), not literature. However, the Bible is an important piece of literature as well; it contains some of the oldest and best-preserved poetry that still survives, as well as many other unique things, and has been of tremendous cultural significance for hundreds and hundreds of years, and is so now on a truly global scale. It's been analyzed on every conceivable level by experts from every conceivable perspective. It doesn't seem at all wrong to discuss or study portions of it in a literature class, given its significance. While its almost certain that not everyone in the class will agree with every concept advanced in the book, that's hardly true of any book you're likely to read, particularly non-fiction. (To avoid the inevitable jab, the Bible (like every other holy book) is classified as non-fiction regardless of whether you believe its contents to actually be true or not.)
That all said, the Bible is not just any other book. If it's going to be studied in an academic context, the teacher and the students need to take special care to respect everyone's viewpoints, both from those who consider it the holy book of their faith and the word of their God to those who openly feel antagonized by or antagonistic towards its message. I feel as if this can be really hard to do in a high school classroom setting, and if pulled off badly can cause people a lot of hurt, so I wouldn't blame a teacher for avoiding it despite its relevance.
