Is anyone else as excited about the Harry Potter book release as I am? I've forgotten everything that's happened so far, so I've been trying to catch up before tomorrow night.
It looks like PurpleD and Priest came back while I was gone. Nice to see you guys again.

Heh, I've also been doing that. I'm totally hyped, and preordered my copy ages ago. Whenever I see any news about Harry Potter on the net, I refuse to read it. This is something I've been waiting for so long, I won't let no damn spoiler ruin it for me.
@Pokemon - Oh, there are competitive Pokemon events? Like, using the GB/DS Pokemon games?
No, that was my girlfriend for a long time ... Kinda had problems with that one. One day she just up and disappeared. I don't know what happened to her, and i really don't like to think of what -might- have happened. Seriously, she was in a relationship with an abusive guy, that wouldn't leave her alone, even when she said she was taken.
Hmm... I wouldn't mind hearing some of the what actually happened between you two. I was kind of there for the beginning, so I'm curious as to what happened. PM me if you want, or if you'd rather not tell, that's cool too.
Post those two lines in Introduce Yourself, and you'll soon have a small army to follow you around Salvation.
Haha, true enough. The longest introduce yourself thread is 179 posts which is for marski (she's actually very cool). Haha, those things get so out of hand. Heck, you don't even need panty shots. All you need is a pic of you holding a magic card and you'll have 15+ proposals!
Actually, there was a time in which a common waffle iron could sway the masses under threat of pain and suffering. Sadly, the powers of malice and wicked intent just don't buy you the same respect they once did...
*shudders* Eek! not the waffle iron. I still have scars from waffle iron-induced beatings. Geez, between your physical abuse and Blue's sexual harassment, it's a wonder why I still come to this site

Good to see you again, Joyd!
And yes, i'm totally stoked for the book release. I don't know what's so appealing about the series though. It's the most cliche mainstream series I've ever read, but it's hopelessly addicting.
It's magic
IN other news, I just finised watching a wicked anime film about 2 kids from Japan in WWII. It's called "Grave of the fireflies" from studio ghibli. It's a bit slow, but it's an incredibly story. Has anyone else seen it (mr. Stuff in particluar)?

Ahhh, the tearjearker. *sniffle* This film is infamous for being able to make anyone cry on the spot. It is Studio Ghibli, and it happens to be one of the ones I have, yes. There's a live-action version of it as well. It's a truly memorable war film, and I think it won some award or another.
Photon, I am quite honored to be considered a bigger geek than yourself. I'd tip my hat to you sir, if I was wearing one. Not that this is really a contest - all of us are geeky in different and equally awesome ways.
Edit: Taking a look at all of Studio Ghibli's films just for fun:
I've been out for a while because I was doing other things and things, but it's summer now so I've got a lot of free time. I've more or less lost interest in Magic entirely (though I still read wizards.com every day), so the pull to the MTGS boards kinda got weak for a while. We're still on the same thread as we were when I left, so not -too- much happened. (As much as things 'happen' in a message board thread.)
Well, I'm guessing that competitively, there are better pokemon, even though Lapras is pretty cool and stuff (I like him anyhow).
I generally use pokémon because I like them and not because they're tournament winners. To me, a pokémon being endearing means a lot more than it having the perfect moveset =)
@Pokemon - Oh, there are competitive Pokemon events? Like, using the GB/DS Pokemon games?
There are, yeah. I guess there always have been since the good ol' days of Blue and Red; people would meet up at game shops and the like, link up, and battle together. With Diamond and Pearl being out, it's much easier to find someone to battle with, though, so the scene is growing pretty quickly.
Speaking of which, I'm getting royally pissed at the hackers on the GTS lately. I needs me some legends, and I don't like that every time I search for one I get "level 9 and under Mew" a million times >_<;;

Oh I love this, I haven't thought about pokemon since I was eight...
Oh man... when I was eight, I watched stuff like Jaspion, Changeman and Kamen Rider Black. In other words, the Pokemon boom was still far in the future.

Seems cool. After I started playing Magic competitively, I started looking at every new game I played with that perspective... like, trying to figure out the optimal strategies for tournament play. Can't say I ever thought like that about the Pokemon VG's though. In fact, I rarely really care about most pokemon stats. I usually just play the ones I think are cool and badass enough.
Since I've been out of the scene for a loooong while, I don't know what the current status of competitive Pokemon is, but it used to be a reasonably big deal in some places. It's a rather different experience than the single-player game. In the single-player game, a team of six 'sweepers' - high attack or SpAtk pokemon that know three or four powerful moves of different types - will be most successful, while in matches against other players at a high level, a more nuanced team make-up can have an edge. (Particularly, moves that disable the other guy's Pokemon go up in stock quite a lot, to the extent that some tournaments would flat-out disallow you from having more than one sleep-inducing move on your team. That was back in the days of red and blue.) However, as I've been out of the scene for a very long time, I have no idea what things look like today. (Though I wouldn't be surprised if the wifi capability of D/P has rekindled interest in competitive matches.)

The Wi-Fi alone is how many leagues conduct their business, IIRC. From some quick browsing that I've done when the causal league of the Joshes started I noticed that status effects only seemed to have gotten worse. I've noticed more than one league that outright bans any Sleep-inducing moves (that is, moves that induce sleep on an opponent - Rest is still allowed) and a couple have gone so far as to ban the Quick Claw hold item and only allow one move that induces Sleep, Paralysis, or Freeze for an entire team. Needless to say, it doesn't seem like there's too much room for diversity with those rules.
@Ether: I really wish the GTS would let you steal the clone glitcher's pokemon... seriously... That or fix the glitch and only let you request pokemon that can actually exist. That would be much much better.
I really wish that overly compettive Pokémon players (read: IV hackers) wouldn't overuse sleep and paralysis, things like that. Maybe then there'd be room for them in league play.
The GTS is really starting to piss me off, yanno? I used it extensively when I started playing and it got me some great pokémon, but now with all the hackers and cloners it's literally unusable, and I hate that. Nintendo's trying to rope it in, but it doesn't seem to be working all that well. Yet another reason why people who hack too much ruin the game ~_~;;
Keep talking sugar like that and you will be the next Alababes
Arguas: Apparently there is some truth involved in it.
Truth involved in what, exactly......? O.O
And howdy folks... great to see you back here Joyd and LittleDragon! Just got back from the dentist... Turns out there's some things I need to take care of with that.... Its not going to be fun, but needs to be done.....
And about the webcam comments.... just.. *sigh* -_- you people and your dirty minds...
Anyway, i'll be around, at home, workin' on my thesis and online. See ya soon!
Hey everyone! Well it has been quite a busy week for me. Last thusday my gf and I celebrated our one month anniversary, which is a big accomplishment for me because for some reason my relationships never last longer than a month or so. Saturday I participated in game day and picked up some money cards like BoP and a 3-0-1 record and finishing 3rd overall. Then Sunday I went to Starland Ballroom to see Reel Big Fish along with Streetlight Manifesto, Less Than Jake, and Suburban Legends. And let me say, it was perhaps one of the best days of my life so far. I had an amazing time and the whole thing was like a dream. And the past few days I have just been busy with work and whatnot. How has everyone else been here in the Coffeehouse?
Life has been good here... We've been celebrating the appearance of some new regulars/casual customers, and the famous Arguas has finally decided to pop around again... I'm slaving away at my senior thesis, Sakura got an award at her job, Mr. Stuff is leaving soon for an interview in New York City.. Let see..... Alacar and Sakura are still flirting like crazy, using the Dimir blankets for "interviewing"...
In any case, I'm happy for you about you and your girlfriend... Indeed the 1-month mark is quite a milestone for a couple... I remember Ryan's and mine... what did we do now...OH yes, we were actually apart technically, but he gave me a card the day before, as I needed to go to the airport that night... he was teaching me Magic, talking about DDR, and my old roommates showed up and we were talking to them about Magic...This was back in the day when I didn't particularly know much/love the game that much... That obviously changed! But I remember very clearly... It was when we were apart for Christmas break, December 15.. I left Dec 14 and I still have the card he gave me that day
I don't know why, but I'm kind of reminiscing a lot about the early days of our relationship..... when he gave me his bracelet from a religious retreat (much like I gave him the bracelet from RIT, our college before he left) when we returned from Thanksgiving break for one thing... Reading emails we exchanged that week... I miss exchanging emails with him... we talk online now, which is great of course... but emails were always fun to read
Anyway, sorry to ramble... I'll catch you folks around.. IM me if you want to talk
I am also out $470 for the flight/hotel and $150 for an overnighted-Saturday-Airmail pair of dress shoes. That's in addition to what was already spent on clothes and my dress jacket. Well, there went a significant chunk of my reserve money.
I am leaving around 2:00pm Monday on a non-stop to La Guardia in New York from Columbus. My hotel is a Howard Johnson's just across the bridge from Manhattan Island, where the interview is. I also reserved three-day parking at the airport in Columbus and a shuttle to take me from La Guardia to my hotel. I'll arrive around 4:30pm Monday, the interview will be at 2:00pm Tuesday, and again somewhere from 2:00-5:00pm on Wednesday. My flight home is at 7:45pm on Wednesday.
If they hire me, I am SOOO calling in to work on Thursday with "Yeah... I don't think I'll be coming in today... or, I don't know, ever". Hehehe. Well, I'd like to think that, anyway, but I don't know if the position will be for right away, or later in the fall. I guess I'll see when I get there.
While I was booking everything, about seven new episodes of things downloaded, so... I'll be busy for a few hours. I still need to get AotW up sometime.
The first is simply working at a fairly high-standard supermarket - Waitrose. Not exactly fulfilling, but they need people exactly my age come August (new smoking legislation). The money is generally better than other leading supermarkets.
...meh. I've worked at supermarkets before... and yeah, it's boring and unfun, but it's money, so one can't fully complain I guess. <_<
Quote from Shadowfox »
The second is far more interesting, rewarding and is beneficial for my future career (teaching). I'd be an assistant working about 4-5 hours a day being ferried across Portsmouth in a minibus with children with special needs. The idea being, I look after them whilst the driver drives. I'd love to get this job, but my age might count against me. Despite that, I'm fairly optimistic, because of my unusual amount of experience considering my age - 3 years volunteer work at a local Cub pack (so have dealt with many behavioral disorders before), occasional work in Paulsgrove schools (area with bad reputation and many children with special needs), a recognised qualification to teach young children (with and without special needs) P.E., my work experience at a local Primary school, and finally my temporary work for a company called Family Learning over the last 2 years (working with parents and their children together - activity based).
Wow, sounds fun, esp since you seem to be really into that sort of thing, making it way more fulfilling for you (from the sounds of it). Best of luck on getting that job.
Oh, and since I missed this, what are you going to New York for again, Mr. Stuff? A job I figure, but what is it exactly? In any case, good luck on your interview (since I gather that's why you're going in person).
Well, just to go over some background on me again:
Ever since the end of my second year of college, I've wanted to go to Japan. My dream has gradually evolved from just a general desire to go over there to the inclination to live, work, and raise a family over there. It's sort of what I want to do with the rest of my life. I got my degree in English with a focus on Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), took the Praxis TESOL test and got certification, and a few other things. My time at WSU (my university) also involved a quarter where I worked as an assistant teacher to a class of EFL students and actually made lesson plans and implemented them and such, which was very cool. There's nothing like having a student call you on your own time and spending an hour just helping them with the problems they're having with a text. It's a great feeling being able to help someone like that.
Long story short, it's now a year after my graduation, and I'm ready to move on from being at home. At least, I hope I am. The company I've applied to, AEON, hires native speakers in the US to go and teach English in their language schools in Japan. If I'm hired, I'll get signed up for a one year contract, and I'll get to go live and work teaching English in Japan for a year, after which time my contract can be renewed. In short, I'll be living my dream. *teary eyed*
It's sort of a big moment for me. I hope everything goes as planned. Even if this doesn't work out, I've got another opportunity lined up with a company called NOVA that I can fall back on. I just hope I get hired this time so I'm not out the money for the trip to NY. This is my gateway to the rest of my life, so like I said, it's a big thing for me. I've been planning this for a long time.
As for my free time during the trip... I honestly have no idea. I won't get there until 4:30pm on Monday, but then the interview isn't until 2:00pm the next day, and is over by 5:00pm. That leaves quite some time for me to do things. What, I don't really know, since I'm trying to conserve money.
Exciting!
Is anyone else as excited about the Harry Potter book release as I am? I've forgotten everything that's happened so far, so I've been trying to catch up before tomorrow night.

Hey, Joyd! Good to see you again. Seems like everyone picked the same time to visit.
And again - welcome back from your short hiatus, LD. Glad to see you didn't stay away forever.

Edit: Taking a look at all of Studio Ghibli's films just for fun:
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984, pre-Ghibli)
Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) <---- Film in Question
My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Only Yesterday (1991) *
Porco Rosso (1992)
I Can Hear the Sea (1993) *
Pom Poko (1994) *
On Your Mark (1995, shown alongside "Whisper of the Heart") *
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
Princess Mononoke (1997)
My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999) *
Spirited Away (2001)
Ghiblies Episode 2 (2002, shown alongside "The Cat Returns")
The Cat Returns (2002)
Innocence: Ghost in the Shell (2004, co-production with Production I.G.)
Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
Tales from Earthsea (2006) *
Note that those aren't all done by Miyazaki, nor even all of his films. He also did the following before founding Studio Ghibli with Isao Takahata:
Future Boy Conan, 1978
The Castle of Cagliostro (Lupin III), 1979
Sherlock Hound, 1982 *
I put a star beside all of the stuff I don't have and haven't seen. I plan to have them all someday.
I generally use pokémon because I like them and not because they're tournament winners. To me, a pokémon being endearing means a lot more than it having the perfect moveset =)

Haha, I should've known that you've seen it. Truly a great movie.
Anyways, here's the ones I haven't seen...

I absolutely loved Nausicaa. It's my favourite, followed by Princess Mononoke then Howl's.
