Be they classics such as D&D, White Wolf, Vampire the Masquerade, or anime-inspired games such as Big Eyes, Small Mouth- this is the place to talk about them and enjoy them with your clan members. But that's not all! We're also into other types of RPGs as well- great console RPGs such as Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, or Final Fantasy, and even MMORPGs like Guildwars, World of Warcraft, or Dungeon and Dragons Online.
At Natural 20, we are very enthusiastic about the gaming industry and gaming subculture of geekdom in general. Members may feel free to post reviews of new systems, supplemental books, or console RPGs. You can also use the clan as a place to discuss things from your own campaigns, or just bounce new ideas off of the rest of us.
WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN [NATURAL 20]
One day, at Photon Eater's Glorious Haunted Castle, he and his henchmen friends sat down to a fun-filled game of D&D.
However, that night... Debbie went to check up on Marcie, and found out that tragedy had paid a visit prior to her arrival!!
Let that be a lesson to you. Don't be like Marcie. Join Natural 20... and save a life! Perhaps your own!

So...what all have I been missing?
Im currently playing FF 3, 5, 6 (still have to start 6) for GBA and DS... The first two (so far) are pretty good games. I think I may be nearing the end of 5 though... Hmmm...
Or, though it pains me to go in this direction, FF6? It's just been rereleased, most people in here are playing/have played it, and it's a game that has enough depth of system and story to actually inspire some conversation.

I'm playing through FF6Advance right now, and god...I must have been braindead when I was a kid, because this game is EASY AS HELL. Doesn't make it any less enjoyable, mind you, but still.
I really wish the SNES Dragon Quests qould be remade or ported for the GBA or something. What I wouldn't give to play DQ6 on an actual console with a real translation. *Wistful*
I'm not playing FF6, unfortunately. But Freaking Elves is hilarious. Who's turn is it? Or should I just post?
*Uses Inspire Courage on Photon with his Kazoo*
Well, originally I was hoping to have all my NPCs ready to go today, but a lot of stuff came up, so I didn't get it done. So I suppose people can go ahead and go and I'll catch up when I can.
Also, just so everyone knows, as per usual, I will not be available until Thursday, starting tonight.
Nice, like the new thread. Now I'm off to add the url for this site into my sig, also note the friend codes for DS games. I don't have Metroid with me now, but friend me up and send me yours.
Well, I don't know about FF VI, but in FF III, I got my party of 4 and am just leveling them up a lot and I have a black mage, white mage, thief and warrior, though I think I'll turn my thief into a red mage. MAGES PWN!

At this point in the game you don't have Geomancer.
Oh, and I just realised I left FF6 at my G-ma's house...
So...I'll have to play 3 and 5 for now...
Oh, and Shadow of the Collosus...great game!
Oh my god shoes...there's no way I could adequately describe the awesomeness of Geomancers in FF3DS. I completely ignored Black Mages all the way through the game, and when I got ahold of a Geomancer (Luneth was mine), I wondered why I'd ever thought of using clunky old MP-dependant mages ever =)
I just got my Geomancer as well... Mp was never more useless.
Unless of course you play with 4 knights (like my brother does)
And I don't like Red Mages...They just...suck... I have one at a High Job level and he is ALWAYS the first one to die...Im getting sick of finding those healing fountains...
(he's my Geomancer now)
Red mages are useful for about three minutes of the game. I usually skip them altogether because they're expensive to outfit and don't give half the output they should.
A class that really begins to shine once you get a little into the game is Thief. Their damage is huge, especially against the right enemies, and they're incredibly fast and resilient. Thing is that they're given to you at the first crystal, when there's no equipment made for them at all. I understand why Square made the decision to switch around some of the jobs and when you get them, but they should've included more equipment for those jobs earlier (or later) on. I LOVE the Black Belt, but there's no late-game equipment for them. Boo.
Yeah, I haven't gotten far enough to get a geomancer yet, but I probably will switch to it. My party is about equal in terms of when they die, just depends.
Never played FF3, so I'm in the dark on that account. It's been years since I played FF6, I can barely remember any of the characters' names. I one thing I never got was why they dump the magictech armor they get in the camp after your done (going through the camp). Plus, how do you get the ninja guy? Don't you have to save him on the floating thing when the world ends?
If Photon Eater's gone til Thursday, maybe I still have a chance to finish Dirtsong in time for the bar fight. (or maybe not)
I know its RTS, not RPG, but has anyone ever played Battle Realms?
Guys, I'm having an awful day. I've been slammed with Crushing Despair from an 18th level caster.
So like, cheer me up and crap.
Someone who is playing FF6, tell me what you are doing with your characters.
I always liked to come up with interesting sets of names for the characters. There was this one time that I played through the game with a friend and we gave each of the characters breakfast food inspired names. Terra was muffin, setzer was milk, etc. I don't remember what each of them were, but I have a database somewhere on my home computer that I can look up. I do remember naming Edgar P-kok (Peacock) - he seems like a peacock, even if that was pushing the boundaries of the breakfast food theme.
Every time I play through, I insist on making an entirely new set of names for the characters that fits some theme or mood. I spend most of the game time looking at the naming screens for each of the characters. Nothing is more annoying that realizing you made a mistake in naming and spending your precious exlixirs at the Colosseum to trade up to rename cards.

There really aren't that many RPGs that are difficult, per se. Most are jsut enjoyable and easy enough if you are sufficiently leveled up.
Eh, I'm willing to disagree with you, wamyc. I think there are challenging games out there that force you to do more creative things than simply level up. Anything made by Tri-Ace, for example =)
What I mean by easy, anyway, is that I'm coasting through the game without any effort. Never have I stopped to level up or had to actually earn money for my equipment or items. It's all just...there.
This is kind of a spoiler, but FF6 is over a decade old by now so I don't rightly care. I would always, always name Shadow "Clyde" when the opportunity arose, back when I was a kid. I'd always do that with characters who didn't go by their real names. For example, Marley and Frog in Chrono Trigger were always Nadia and Glenn when I played. I would've changed Robo's name to Prometheus, but there wasn't enough room =(
True. There's never enough room in RPGS for naming characters properly. Even newer games (that I've seen) tend to constrain the character limit for the names. Seems like scripting is still trumping our freedom of expression there.
And I made sure to put in a caveat when I said RPGs aren't difficult. It was more of a statement of most mainstream RPGs with an implicit question for one of the members of Natural20 to step up and tell me about a game that did have innovative ways to make it difficult.
So, while leaving that question still on the table (which RPGs have found ways to make them challenging), I pose another question: Would you enjoy an RPG that removed the elements of scaling power that seems pervasive? I'm sure there's some game out there that doesn't do this, but most games have you start out fighting cats and lizards and by the end of the game you are strong enough to level a small country and can withstand full-on solar flares.
If you take paper RPGs as admissable, the only games I can think of off hand that don't do this would be Polaris, Call of Cthulu, the Wuthering Heights Role Playing Game*. Of course those games all end with you much weaker or dead. I'm really looking for something with a more 'realistic' arc of growth: merely plausible increases in strength or firing skill or persuasive talents.
*You may NOT make fun of me or think less of me because I have a copy of this game printed out and in its own binder. And yes, it really does exist.
