This movie shares alot in common with my first entry, Soylent Green. It is a view of the future which is a very believable possibility and it is also based off of a novel. Whereas Soylent Green shows us a Dystopia Future, Run starts off showing us what appears to be a Utopian future. People live peacefully and care free in luxory. There is a price tag for this Utopia however; people only live 30 years.
To escape the savges of over-population, polution and war; mankind moved into regulated domed cities. Food seems plentiful, very few people seem to work (likely for most, work is a choice), sexual gratification is at the press of a button. There are even a few hints dropped that homosexuality is completely accepted in this time (three times this stands out; One when Logan is selecting a sexual partner and a male appears for him as an option, again when he asks his selected female partner if she prefers women, and again in a scene where they are running through a sex club and in the background you can make out some apparent girl/girl and boy/boy couplings. Logan is groped by both sexes in this scene)
At the age of 30, people are put through a ritual known as Carousel in the hopes off having their Lifeclock (a crystal in their hand) "Renewed". Those who are not renewed are destroyed. We learn quickly that nobody is ever renewed.
Logan has the job of being a "Sandman", a special police officer who hunts people who run from the Carousel ceremony or try to escape the city and then he kills them. He does not view what he does as killing, and actually states he has never killed anyone. The people he hunts were meant to pass on anyways and he just completes the cycle, and he feels bad that these people have no chance at Renewel if they run.
Logan is brought before the city's computer, which seems to be in charge of everything. He is giving one of his regular reports and presenting evidence to the computer when the computer asks him if he recognizes the Ankh that he found on his last runner. He does not, and the computer informs him that it is a symbol of a place known as "Sanctuary" where runners head to. He is told to become a runner himself and infiltrate and destroy it. To allow him to do this, the computer artificially ages his Life Clock so that he is forced to run.
The next section of this review will be in spoiler.
Logan remembers the girl he had called up for casual sex was wearing an Ankh around her neck and calls her up for information. He asks for her help to run, and she reports to her friends who ask for her help in having him killed (they do not believe he is legit, and resent him for being a Sandman). Jessica (the girl) changes her mind about Logan when he lets a runner go in front of her, however Logan's partner and friend also sees him do this.
Together Logan and Jessica run, and after alot of action make it out of the city. We discover the Ankh is actually a key to a door out of the main section of the city to unused older areas. They wind up in an underground cave which is kept super cold and run by a cyborg named Box who was in charge of keeping fish and algae and other food frozen for storage. Box has gone mad due to being left alone so long, and his orders are aomewhat messed up. We find he has been freezing and storing all runners who have been making it this far. There appears to be no Sanctuary in actuallity.
They escape Box (Aside: as awesome as this movie is, Box is the worst Movie robot I have ever seen hands down) and wind up in a wasteland. After some travel they come accross the ruins of Washington, D.C. and marvel at the statue of Abe Lincoln (since they have never seen an old person before). They eventually find a lone old man and his cats and they learn a great deal about the world which they have found themselves. They discover that since they are far away from the computer that their Life Clocks have reset themselves. The truth sets in; there is no Renewel, no Sanctuary, life in the dome is a lie. People do not need the dome's protection anymore, the world is a lush and beautiful place.
Logan's former partner has tracked him down here, and at this point we get a final battle do the death. This fight is really a metaphor for Logan's fight with himself and what he has been raised to believe and what is the obvious truth. In the end as he kills his old friend, he is really acknowledging that he accepts the truth and it is his old self that is killed. When faced with the truth, his friend refused to accept it.
Logan then comes to the conclusion that he cannot let the people he has sworn to protect as a Sandman continue to live and die to this lie. He returns with Jessica and the old man to the city and they sneak in. Logan is captured and interrogated by the computer (who does so by pulling the knowledge from his mind) and when faced with the truth and unable to accept it on its own the computer explodes.
The movie ends with the young greeting and accepting the old man. The youth accept that they one day will grow old and the false life of extravagence is over.
This movie is another which was drawn heavily from for the game Paranoia, moreso than Soylent Green. In Paranoia the characters answer to The Computer and live in a domed city. There is no normal reproduction, instead everyone has numbered clones (Logan 5). The Computer has its own personal policemen called Troubleshooters (Sandmen).
References can be found throughout pop culture. One of the funniest appears in the Simpsons where an MTV VJay has her clock start beeping and is dragged away and replaced with a younger new VJay.
Good rule of saftery to avoid crossing up with me, avoid sci-fi from 1980 or earlier. While I may do 1980-1990 in some cases, the majority of my classics will come from 1978 and earlier.
I've always wanted to see Logan's Run, but I've never had the opportunity, sadly. One of these days I will.
Which reminds me. My interest in the old david Lynch movie Eraserhead has been piqued, and now I want it on DVD. I'm not a fan of Lynch's by any stretch of the imagination, but this movie seems like it would be different.
In a laptop update...Josh has about three hundred dollars in his bank account now, and the other laptop that was supposed to arrive today simply hasn't. Hopefully that'll be the end of everything. Josh is still on edge, but I'm incredibly relieved for now, y'know?
That sounds like a good deal, but since the finances have been shaky even without this mixup, having that money in reserve could go a long way towards peace of mind for the three of you.
Actually, I'm not sure we're even getting the second computer now, and Joshua's bank account reads that he wasn't even charged for it, so they might have cancelled it. In which case, we don't have the problem we think we had.
Which one? ...I'm pretty sure I know the one you mean. Meh, it's pretty much the same old, same old. Although I did have the most pleasant, productive, and respectful discussion with extremestan I've ever had, so that was definitely a plus.
That's actually the extremestan that I used to talk to all the time. Well, debate with, but you know.
Anyway, I've been starting to hang out in Debate again, and I'm kind of regretting it, due to feeling sort of beat up in there.
Oh, wait.... that thread. Well, you're welcome. I wanted to tread carefully around the use of the word "pathological" since it has a great deal of technical validity but also a lot of semantic baggage. In any case, you sure as heck rocked that thread without my help.
That's the one I meant. I hope I did make a difference; I'm not looking forward to a bunch of eggheads or political zealots coming in there and trying to tell me that their intellectualism disdains my experience and that they find the concept of transsexualism "offensive." Like that's a freakin' issue, or something. (Not that I'm singling anyone in particular out as being this way)

Fair enough. I think that's quite often the way things go - when you've got something in your head for one reason or another, you notice it much more than you did before.
Plus, I like the little personal reason at the end :-).
Good.

Ether, that's a good question.. I was thinking of shortening it to every Saturday and every Tuesday, 2-3 packs, which could be 4-6 packs every week or so. That would shape our decks up much better and enhance trading a little more. I know it's neat to 'work with what you roll' but I would rather see our players happy with their decks--then maybe after two or three months we'll all 'refresh' with new decks. How about that?
As it stands, we're slated to get our packs Saturday, but I could easily give them out now if everyone wanted them.
I was really hoping to get them tonight or tomorrow, actually, since I've already played my requisite two matches this week and I'm eager to see what I can get from good ol' Planar Chaos. Whenever you want to do it is fine with me, though.
I was really hoping to get them tonight or tomorrow, actually, since I've already played my requisite two matches this week and I'm eager to see what I can get from good ol' Planar Chaos. Whenever you want to do it is fine with me, though.
Okay.. if you want your 2-3 packs twice a week, let me know.
Chances are I'll pull rank on this thing and do it anyway who wants to argue against more cards?
I'll send out all the packs when I get home. Including yours, Umgenni! Since you just joined you'll get 6 packs--1 from each set in the block (Ons-Leg-Scg) and Coldsnap, and 2 packs from a set of your choice (Invasion-Planar Chaos). Core Sets are allowed.
Allin: That card.. 3 cards for 3 mana? Solid uncommon, I'd say.
Up until recently I've had a big problem with snacking, mostly because I grew up with an italian grandmother who LOVED to cook. Every time my brother and I would come to visit she'd start us off with a bowl of spinach in vinegar and then...it was on. Tortellini, gnocci, garlic bread, pizzelle (amazing snack that), it just didn't stop.
I've always loved food, both preparing and eating it, so I guess I was destined to be at least a little chubby. This is fine with me, though, because frankly I think the chubby boys are the cutest and most attractive boys in the whole world. I like being lumped in with them =)
I think we'll be giving walmart.com a call, yeah. Just to make sure everything's on the up and up and nothing unexpectedly disastrous is going to happen.
Do I have something on my face? Uh oh, I got guacamole on the tip of my nose again, didn't I?
@Allin: Maybe that card should be a sorcery? It's incredibly versatile, strictly better than Counsel of the Soratami except for having double blue in the cost.

Dang, NP. I'm only 5'5 and I weigh a little more than that. You must be really thin.
On dieting - I'm fortunate that I naturally enjoy foods that aren't so bad for me, so I've never had to diet, though I'm not in spectacular shape even though I'm not overweight becasue I excercise probably less than most people. (I'm not stationary, but I don't have a fitness regimen or anything.)
How do you intend to "sacrifice" anger?
When someone slights us, there's a sort of sense of entitlement to get angry at them that I think most people feel. Trying to take a breath and forgive the slight can be a challenge. Also, brooding in anger can consume a lot of mental energy, and giving up a grudge can make it easier to turn one's heart and mind to other things.

I'd actually rather go slower. While there are still tons of cards I want for my deck, I'd rather play more than four or five matches between significant evolutions of the deck, and there's only so much time in a week. I know that getting new packs is exciting, but I think a smaller number at a time makes evolving the deck more satisfying.

It's gonna take some getting used to, knowing that while I'm on the couch watching the custom card games thread, Mamelon is at the PC typing away in debate. I'm loving it.
