I had a huge post written up detailing this situation, but the site ate it so I don't feel like getting into it.
I'll just say that right now, Josh has -325 dollars in his bank account, has received one laptop in the mail today on which I am typing, and is slated to receive another any day now. This unfortunately means no rent money, no utilitiy money, two hunded dollars in overdraft fees, and an overwhelming sense of dread I haven't experienced since my mother and I were living in a foreclosed house with nothing to eat but pancake mix.
So yeah. GREAT day.
Hully crap, welcome to Atog land! :(((
I really wish I could tide you over until you can take the compputer guys to court for this mistake. Unfortunately, I haven't worked for six weeks, so I can't But it really sucks, and you have my heartfelt righteous wrath, and my hopes.
FWIW, last time i got in a similar situation I had to sell off a boatload of Magic cards, my computer, a stereo, my futon, a bike, and a wicker loveseat in a big hurry, but I made rent and whined at the utils until I could get back on my feet.
It helped that I had been meticulous about always paying rent on or before the due date, and always had my bills paid up, and knew where I could unload a lotta crap in a hurry for decent cash. It also helped that it was not the middle of winter, so ppl were actually still moving and needed furnishings and crap like bikes and wicker furniture.
Lemme tell ya, Ebay woulda been too slow by several days. Even selling my car woulda been too slow. (I also really seriously expected to have to be living in the damn thing in a week, so figured I'd hang on to it. )
You just might have time to unload stuff in a 3-day auction tho. Means payment would be in yr Paypal in a week, and give another day to transfer that to yr checking acct and y're set. (I don't actually know how to do that sort of reverse transfer.)
The first thing I'm going to do is contact our landlord and see if we can't work something out with postponing the rent or somesuch. He's a nice guy and fairly lenient, and we've never been late with our rent once in three years, so I'm hoping that makes a difference.
I checked Josh's order status for the other laptop and it's just shipped. Paying for one-day shipping might actually save us here, since if the thing gets here faster it'll get back to them faster as well. Hell, we could both be overreacting and the money could be replaced as soon as walmart.com gets word of the laptop being shipped back. That'd be ideal...but I don't know.
The whole thing just makes me sick to my stomach, really.
@ether : I am kind of lost here at what is going on. Sounds like somehow you got charged for and shipped two computers? O_o
We messed ourselves up for rent and bus passes at the beginning of February...(we both forgot we needed to get bus passes and she forgot a paypal payment she had put through.)
Also a close friend of mine had her income slashed in half unexpectidly last month...just before rent was due.
Fow our issue we got a payday loan. It is a possibility.
What happened, basically, was this. Josh ordered a laptop from walmart.com and it was taking forever to confirm/ship/what have you, so he called the 1-800 number and they told him it was out of stock. He changed his order to another model and cancelled the old order, and we thought everything was peachy, but then when we didn't get a confirmation for THAT one, Josh called again and was told his second choice was out of stock. He cancelled that order and made a third, but today, only a few days after we'd already cancelled the second order, it comes via UPS. So now we've got one computer and another is being shipped as of this morning. All together that's nearly a thousand dollars down the drain, and a big heap o'trouble for us.
Yeah...the current disadvantage is what has me freaked, really. I mean, if I knew we'd be alright for rent and such this month, and that Josh's whole paycheck wouldn't disappear next week, I'd be fine. Truth is, though, I don't know what's going to happen. Uncertainty is the enemy of peace.
@Ether
Wow, that sucks. If you guys get into anything serious (like dire), you can contact me via pm. I'd be more than happy to provide a loan.
Also, I actually don't have time to play Precon League games today like I thought I would. Possibly not tomorrow, either. They took the TV out of the commuter lounge in the Student Union where we used to hang out, so now we're all over on the big TV in the Honors Dorm game room. Unfortunately, it's a place without an *easily* accessible computer lounge.
The good news is my friend offered me a place to stay, so no sleeping in my car again. Now, I'm off to watch anime all night at 1080i on a big screen TV.
Omna: That is really scary, I agree, and I'm sorry you had to deal with something like that. Hopefully Campus Security will handle it. Luckily, you're with Ryan, and I highly doubt anything will get past him to you. So just relax. You have plenty of people on your side nearby to help you out.
On the lighter side of things, it was probably a Mardi Gras prank.
Ether: I hope this gets finished quick. You two don't deserve this kind of crap. I can't really see how THEM sending two laptops means YOU get charged for two laptops. But, as you have been on top of your rent for three years, your landlord should be forgiving... The big question is about the utilities. I'm hoping you guys can pull this through. If I had any money, I'd send it to you guys, but I have nothing I can send.
Mardi Gras: On a lighter note, Mardi Gras is, as far as I'm aware, basically just Carnival. There's a lot of partying, parades through New Orleans streets, and the debauchary the festival is known for in America. Essentially, it's a week long party. All schools in the city have this week off (at the expense of spring break, which is why it's REALLY hard to get down there in time). All bars are flooded, etc. The festival actually recieves a lot of flack it doesn't deserve. The bit about women showing their fiddly bits is true, yes, but it usually only happens after 10 pm, when all the kids are asleep. For the rest of the roughly 10 hour day, a street route is blocked, and 'floats' (large platforms with cool scenery on top of, or pulled behind, trucks) parade through town, built by businesses and private groups throughout the city. On top of these floats are men and women in costume. The floats can be anything from a giant turkey to advertise a local butcher to, more likely, gods and goddesses like Orpheus. One of the big claims to fame is that these folks on the floats are constantly throwing candy, beaded necklaces, and other goodies off the floats into the crowd on the edge of the street. Then it's always a mad scrable to grab them, as they're pretty darn collectable.
The problem is, Mardi Gras (usually) attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists into New Orleans. This puts a huge strain on the New Orleans Police (which is already corrupt as-is) and makes crime easy to pull off. It's not as big as a deal as the media makes it out to be (coming from a 'Nawlins native), but it IS an issue on occasion. There's beatings sometimes, a murder every year, and numerous thefts. However, it's not that different from, say, New Year in New York. At least, as far as I'm aware.
The other claim to fame for Mardi Gras is the 'King Cake". It's basically a large donut with an irregular, but vaguely ovoid, shape. It's made of a light and fluffy material. On the top is a large layer of icing, then colored (the Mardi Gras colors are Purple, Green and Gold) sugar on the top. Baked inside is a plastic baby. The tradition goes that whoever gets the baby buys the King Cake for the next day/year.
Unfortunately, no other city really can do Mardi Gras justice. Trust me, I check up on these things. Colorado Springs/Denver does a really half-assed attempt which is no more festive than a group of people in costume strolling down the streets. I mean, hell, if we can pull of St. Patrick's day parades all right, you'd assume Mardi Gras... But no, people don't like the festival up here, because it's too wild in 'Nawlins. King Cakes are generally well done, but they're done with cream-cheese icing rather than the good stuff. Ah well, ce la vie.
Omna - GIDEON is an online Medical Diagnosis database tool that can be used to rapidly determine infomation about local disease outbreaks and things. The program is also used to synthesize information about disease outbreaks around the world. It was mentioned in my databases course. Anyway, the "GIDEON Code" would be the computer code itself that the database system is running. Not that that makes any sense in your context, but that's what I thought of when I read your post. That is really spooky.
Ether - Wow, man, that sucks. I really don't know what to say. I hope everything works out all right quickly.
Well, it seems like everything is going to be alright. I always say that things are never as bad as they seem, and it always ends up being right. The three of us figured things out to an extent, and it seems like no matter what we're going to be broke, but not homeless.
Meanwhile, Mamelon and I are online at the same time OMG
@ether: wow that sucks so much I hope you guys can do something to get out of the jam your in
okay I have some good thing and bad things
good thing: I found a pretty good website http://allabout-sp.net its a site that has every southpark episode, its nice to watch when bored. I wish they did a scrubs one I've been getting into that recently.
Bad things:
I got no homework accomplished as of yet because I've had alot of things on my mind mainly my fathers surgery. I've talked about it before, its different then my family friends
My dad is a recovering(well recovered, hes been sober for a long time, and has a masters in drug and alchohol counseling) drug addict and alchoholic. As well as a Vietnam Veteran. He was also smoking since he was 13. He is going in for a left shoulder replacement. Three years ago he went through major heart surgery including open heart and a double and a triple bipass. They also found he had lung cancer and beat it via kimo. I wish I knew more about it but I was young when he had the surgery, Im in the 9th grade now so it happened around when I was 12 The doctors were first unsure about the anesthesthia but they must of figured something out and my dad just forgot to inform me. I have been thinking about it very hard today and managed to do no school work, which I have to do soon. Can someone IM me or something because I need someone to talk to and none of my friends are online, even if they were they wouldn't know what I was going through, all of my friends dads are in amazing shaper except one who died in a plane crash 5 years ago. I am really scared for my dad, because he is nervous, and I have witnessed him cry in the past 2 months, the only other time I saw that happen was when he had to put our dog down, and anyone that was around that dog felt sorry when they found out, it was like a genius. Im going to be in the hospital all day, and ill be finishing up the odyssey and most likely bring some other hw with me. I think this could be my longest post ever in the history of me.
Hey everyone. Sounds like a lot of not-so-good things happened today. I just want to send out my best wishes to everyone involved. I will be praying for Omna, Photon, and ethersphere that everything will get better and you can get over whatever has happened. Just know that we are all here to support you, and I'm sure if anyone got in a lot of trouble, everyone here would be willing to help out in every way possible.
@Cecilia: WHAT?!?!?! Why are you leaving for a month? That makes me really sad. But what makes me even more sad is that no one even acknowledged it. Maybe people skipped over Shin's post. Here: Attention: Kevin/Cecilia is leaving the site for a month!! There, now people should know :). Anyway, I hope whatever caused you to leave will be over with soon, because I know everyone loves having you here.
I hope everyone had a good day today. My track practice was tough, but I'm sure it is starting to help a lot. Um, what else to say? The FCC round ends today. I've got to make a couple more changes on my card and then I'll be done.
@SB: I'm doing rather well, how are you? I know how you feel about track practice. We start baseball practices in a few weeks. I'm gonna be a starter this year and I'm so happy.
Now that I get into this, the laptop thing isn't so bad. I despise the touch-pad and would much rather have a mouse, but I'm so happy that multiple people in our household can be online at once now. It'll make Den chats so much easier and more fun =)
It also means that I'm going to be available for Wasted City and precon league games more often, so yay. Which reminds me; Crimson, I'm sorry I couldn't meet you for a game tonight but by the time I got your PM I was in such a harried emotional state that I felt like moving would make me throw up. I hope we can play soon, though =)
He's lookin' good, Evan, but his stats do look a little low for a 32-point buy. You could revise them if you want; with a 32-point buy you have room for three 18s, so I say go for it =)
I do like the flavor a lot, I'll say. I love his name, in particular. any thoughts on a theme song yet?
I hate the point buy's. I know thats how you did it, but I think that rolling is more in the spirit of d20 games. As far as theme songs go. Can I pick any song ever made?
Ooooh okay. I'm going to have fun with this one. I know my song already. And I love magic items. I'd love to start with some +2 piercing bullets for my gun
Hey.. I've been playing WoW most of this evening..
Now to type up the Regular of the Week..
Thanks AL! There was an article in my local newspaper today about a boy in my school, I didn't know him, who commited suicide last night after his character was killed in WoW. Don't be THAT GUY!
