I really like flavorful legends, but the fun of playing a card should also be a priority. Any specific character is likely to be far too complex to be summed up on a card. If you watch CCM, many times people attempt to convert characters from fiction into cards; almost invariably these cards wind up disjointed and convoluted as they attempt to cram too many aspects of what a character can do onto a card, resulting in a card that clearly depicts the character well, but isn't very playable. Cards that do too much can be less exciting; legends frequently have unique abilities, and the legend can sometimes be made less exciting by watering down the card and pushing up the mana cost with secondary abilities.
hehe i wonder if ill ever get on kraj's favorite person list i dont think so though becuase i dont think im as nearly as cool as the other people listed on his list. Its okay though.
@future sight: I havent really looked at the spoiler but ive been hearing from some people that future sight seems to be pretty innovative like combing two card mechanic abilities together. Im not sure if the lifelink ability is really the best possible name for that innovative ability but in theory and all purposes its probably fine.
Good morning everyone! I just got up from bed and going to get ready for work in like 10 minutes. Two more days straight of work then i have the whole weekend off which will be really nice. Have a great day everyone and take care and best wishes to you all! *hugs and blows kisses*
Completely off topic, but I must ask. Just as an observation....are you a FE7 fan? That banner is particularly nostalgic of the days I used to play it.
Why, yes, I am. I'm a pretty big fan of the Fire Emblem series. I might actually go back and play the first 6 sometime.
Yeah, I just woke up. A little later than what I wanted to, but I should be able to get everything done and squeeze a little game time in. All I have to do is get through today and tomorrow and I have off the next 2 days at least. Thursday, I'll be by myself after 2:30 until 9, but since the Bakery area is pretty much self-serve, I shouldn't have too many troubles. I'm going to finish checking everything, and I'll post again before I leave.
I want a localization of Fire Emblem 4. It's the only one I can actually say I'd play through more than once ;__;
I've noticed a lot of bitterness and cynicism toward Future Sight. Truth be told, it's old already. You'll be playing these cards in a couple of months no matter what you're saying about them now. People will build pacts decks, use tribal artifacts and enchantments, and find some way to break enchantment creatures. It'll be fun, seriously. I just wish everyone would lighten up.
Good morning everyone. I having an "Arg" start to my day. Forgot to set my alarm and woke up 40 minutes after I normally start work. Lucky it is dead today and they were willing to give me 2 hrs pre shift time off rather than mark me late.
A tidbit for my set, a teaser as such.
A race in which the last surviving member was assumed slain in Kamigawa, but in which many of them were actually banished to Cryptworld.
That is hint number one. People can start guessing as they read.
They have brought the Arcane spell type with them to Cryptworld.
That is two.
They are themselves arcane. Cards that can be Spliced onto them trigger when they come into play, and in some cases some have the ability to trigger spliced effects in certain situations
next
Expect to see the following "Arcane Creature - Bird Spirit"
I agree, Ether. They do this with every single set. They complain about the cards they wind up playing, and embrace the cards they will eventually reject.
It's funny, because you can't measure a card's value without testing it's power. there are things you can't anticipate, things you can't measure without actually playing the cards

As for the FS hate.. why?? I expect to see a lot of one-ofs for a lot of the futureshifted cards. Tribal stuff? Bah, not this set. Too small to abuse a whole new type. Creature enchantments? Sure, but one or two maybe.
What I expect to see a lot of in Future Sight, besides the numerous 'one-ofs' with the pretty frame: Time counters. Oodles of suspend/time counter goodies, with more variation on the previous two sets, twists, and cycles.
My problem with Teysa specifically is that she is an advokist, aka a lawier, and also a master of acting. She should definitely have had taxing/rules setting abilities, or something that had to do with deceiving. The creature killing ability could fit, but it's the spirit thing that makes absolutely no sense. It's not like she's even a master of etomancy or anything like that.
On Future Sight, I'm with Tanthalas. There are quite a few cards I like already (for example, they did some very clever stuff with the Scry/Fateseal duo). It's just the overall idea that I find too chaotic for my tastes. I like tighter designs, like Ravnica block.
Yes, the Tengu are living on Cryptworld. Expect them, in all colors. All Tengu are as a base "Arcane Creature - Bird Spirit" and some have ways to reuse the spells spliced onto them...kind of like imprint but without losing the original spell. Expect some to have Flash as well obviously.
I will preview some other block parts later today. I have a slew of ideas.
I just noticed that FS is getting the usual "I'M QUITTING MTG THIS IS BULL****!!!1eight" attitude from a lot of people. They lived through Kamigawa and Ravnica, they'll live through this.
I'm personally not really jazzed about FS, but I think it might be good. At least it looks like they're gonna be good to black, unlike in TS and PC. Gods...I never thought I'd feel inclined to say that I don't like my own color until I saw Planar Chaos black ~_~;;
@Sakura: Whoa. I said again and again during Kamigawa block "this is mythical Japan, so where the hell are the Tengu?!"
I have taken what was previously a keyword and underused and made it a subtype (which it should have been). I also added some special interaction.

Tengu were considered for red's small creature race, despite the fact that they would have had flying. When the Akki were created, they were considered a better fit. Tanuki were originally in green, but some aspects of the Tanuki mythology didn't fit in well with the general flavor of Magic.
@ The "This sucks, I'm quitting Magic" attitude - Kamigawa got me back into Magic after a few years away, and Ravnica got me extremely fired up like nothing else. After two sets of Time Spiral, I don't really consider myself to even really be a Magic player anymore. I never intentionally "quit Magic", but I only have time and cash to do so many things, and if a set or block is not engaging, I just have other things to do.
One extra for this set. This needs some tweaking though.

I believe I read the article about the Tengu vs. the Akki. The Tengu are bird-people, thus would have had flying.
The reasoning behind the Tanuki not being included could be quite logical, considering some of the anatomical aspects of the creatures. More than likely, however, their status as tricksters and shapeshifters would have made them unfitting.
What bothers me most about Kamigawa is that, of all the new creatures, the Kitsune appeared to be the weakest of the new races overall, at least card-wise...if I'm wrong, let me know, but that's what I saw.

You are right, I can think of none of the Kitsune which had any recognizable impact on the game. Eight and a Half tails is the closest and sees some casual play, and sometimes Sensei Golden-tail. Compared to the constructed impact of the Moonfolk (Meloku as a prime example), Snakes (Tribe Elder, the whole snake deck which was in standard), Akki (Kiki as a prime example), and the Nezumi (Many see constructed play still, Graverobber and Inkeyes show up in Extended); the Kitsune are worthless.
That bothered me. I mean, casual players see some value in most cards. I myself play casual, and I often play with cards that nobody would normally touch, simply by the virtue of my small collection.
But I do not like most of the Kitsune. I think, in their attempt at pushing the samurai (who were pretty good from a casual standpoint) they didn't make the Kitsune worthwhile. In fact, other than 8.5 Tails, the only acceptable kitsune were samurai.
It's pretty bad when you can show a complete noob a card, and he guesses correctly that it completely sucks. That's a pretty good indication that the card is beneath playability, even in noob-casual
I myself would've given blue the Kappa (not the Akki but real kappa) and green the Tengu. Yeah, I know they had flying, but still. Tengu are really more green than anything, so they'd have been strange in any other color.
Although I'm fine with the Akki, actually. They gave me my most favorite Magic card of all time, Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker.
I liked the Akki, myself. the Nezumi had some cool cards in there, the Soratami had some interesting cards, and the Orochi had some decent stuff. Only the Kitsune utterly sucked.
It's like the Nezumi Cutthroat not horrible. It can't block, but it has evasion. It's not great, but to someone like me, it's acceptable. it does the job. The only common Kitsune I generally like is Kitsune Blademaster Again, not great, but acceptabe if you desperately need a body to throw in the fray.
When I, someone who plays magic on a purely casual basis, is a budget player and is a thorough Johnny, won't play most of a large group of cards. Something is definitely wrong.

Aside from creatures like Kataki and 81/2 Tails, the kitsune had very little.

Well, Kataki saw SOME play, but not a whole lot. Orochi were definitely the strongest for their format. I'd say Nezumi were a close second, then Akki, Moonfolk, and Kitsune. Overall, not so great a set anyways.
On an outside note: HOW CAN RHAPSODY BE SUCH A GOOD BAND?!? I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THEM!! IT'S LIKE CRACK FOR MY EARS!!!! [/excitement]
Spells with Spellshape work similar to Ninjutsu. When a Sorcery or Instant you control on the stack resolves, you may pay the Spellshape cost of a card in your hand and return the resolving spell to your hand before any of its resolution effects happen. The card you are Spellshaping is revealed and put into the graveyard, this spell resolves immediately.
I've won game after game solely thanks to Nezumi Cutthroat, so there's no way that could be a bad card. Sure, to some tournament snob it could be considered "okay," but I don't play tournaments.
I was really disappointed with the kitsune, though. Most of them were just...uninspired. Eight-and-a-Half Tails was an awesome card, but to be honest one awesome card doesn't make up for a whole race of suck. I'm a Kamigawa lover - it's the block that really got me into the game big-time - but I just can't think of how every other race had such power and the kitsune...didn't.
I don't like Spellshape--there is no break between a spell resolving and it going to the graveyard. The keyword basically makes the spellshaped card Split Second; I can't respond to it, since I can just, say, play Angel's Grace, then play any spellshape card without worry or response. Eek.
Also, I assume Epic spells work just like the keyword?
Think of the implications. I'm assuming that this is a replacement affect, so that the spell resolves instantly.
It's like "I'll play Healing Salve", then drop your Assassins Mark and watch your opponent's face fall, realizing that the Salve was a feint
Thanks. That is the point of the ability to a tee. It is about bluffing. Wizard's have tried making many bluff mechanics but always comes short somewhere.

That is the point of the Keyword Ala-babes. Note the Spellshape costs are higher, it is pretty mana intensive. It really is not that abuseable. Yes it works off split-second spells really well, in a format where Splitsecond excists with it that is.
Yes Epic works just like the Keyword, I just felt it made more sense as a Supertype. Epic is Legendary for non-perms...so why is it a Keyword. Also means it works well with Splice and such.
