For those who care, I've changed my MSN because I was getting too many rather annoying IMs from folks of foreign persuasion who seemed to be getting me randomly and had no idea what I was saying. If you use MSN and want me on the list, do IM my current account and I'll get you the new name.
Any forum or thread in which debating is intended is going to have problems with people fighting and quarrelling with each other and trying to show off their intellect/knoweldge/whatever rather than really debating. However, I don't think that MTGS' Debate forum is quite as bad about this as some of you claim it is.
There are some people there that only seem to want to come in, say their piece, and just be right. However, a good debater cares less about her own rightness and smartiness and more about understanding the issue, the positions of the other debaters (allies and opponents alike), and communicating clearly. We have quite a few very good debaters here, including most of the people up for Best Debater at one time. Some are those which post often in many different threads, and always offer solid data and arguments, such as extremestan, TheInfamousBearAssassin, Blinking Spirit, Furor (at one time), and so on. Then there are those who post less often, but when they do, exemplify not only reason but reasonable behavior, and bring a wealth of understanding and experience along, such as our own SnoopDoggAtog, Rowdowser, BenGreen, Sutherlands, etc.

As for the debate section, I know how it is. I go into the Philosophy section to see if people want to have a discussion over something, and what I get is people telling me that I'm wrong, they're right, and this is why nothing I say could actually come true.
Philosophy can be a bit prickly, but if you're interested, I suggest you just hang out there a bit more, and after a wee bit you may find it not quite so bad after all.
The problem with debating (anywhere) is that you need to understand the language. Each poster will have certain assumed ideas, styles of communication, and tacit agendas, and it's important to be able to interpret the intent of others.
@Sneaky: I heard about Sneaky going away. I wonder who'll be admin now?

Thanks! I actually made a good point, cool! Yeah, I just hate the feeling of being the only one of my friends not in a relationship and being left out of stuff because of it. And don't feel bad for me! I'm fine! :p.
Of course you made a good point! I've felt that way before, myself. I think I've even been the one doing it before, as well.

All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.
But the rainbow is an image of hope for many reasons, as it is a brilliant sight coming out of oftimes dismal weather.
Yes, I do. That's my prefered messenger. Teqoli is the screen name. One day I might be able to snag Nai, but I doubt it highly.
And I didn't mean just the Philosophy forum, but the debate forum in general. I've noticed that people don't seem to take the validity of other arguments into account and tend to get nasty when things don't go their way. Perhaps I just look at the heated arguments. I understand Philosophy is a hard subject, but I'd like it if, instead of constantly being told that "That argument is illogical, therefore wrong no matter what you say," which happened many times in the "What can god do?" debate, I'd love to have someone actually talk about what I'm saying rather than just being continually contrary and not admitting that, since we're talking about the universe and life at large where science can't touch, there really is no data to use in those conversations.
Logic/illogic is largely concerned with organization of ideas and communication, and little else. I agree with you, wholeheartedly, that logic and rationalism is not the end-all be-all of life and truth.
For those issues about which you were met with contrary talk, the best thing would probably be to approach the topic from a totally different way, in a way that was more suited to your natural way of sharing ideas and feelings.
Anyway, when I first came here, I remember thinking, "Ugh, I'll never go in that Debate forum." I think we all see how that turned out. Seriously, though, those of a less scientific bent and more emotionally delicate nature are probably right in assuming that's not the place for them, and yet I fall into that category and I found a place there. It can surprise you, depending on with whom you speak. Some people who frequent there? It's like beating frozen meat on a wooden block (not naming names). With others, it's like sipping wine under a frosty sky. Quite varied.
I should say, though, I'm not really trying to convice you to start frequenting there. I'm just rambling.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the light that you see. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel. All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.

TheInfamousbearAssassin claims he is king of legacy though but many people from san diego including my friends from there that play legacy says hes full of it but anyway that is probably besides the point. Yeah IBA seems like hes pretty good at debating though. At least i didn't come up with the Yoda of Legacy title but my friends did since they say I am a really good player and always give great insight on making their decks better in the format.
Well goodnight everyone and see you all tommorrow on here! Take care of yourself everyone and best wishes to everyone too! *hugs and blows kisses to everyone*
@Kevin: Oh, you know Assassin, too? I bet he's not as amazing as you at Legacy.
@Kraj: It's always nice to see you in Debate. It's hard to find someone who I feel is often on "my side," because I don't really have much of a side. I don't know many people who are simultaneously approving of homosexuality/gay-marriage, disapproving of traditional gender idealisms, humanistically oriented, and yet still fairly socially conservative, not anti-Christianity, and very much concerned with moral treatment of ideology, economy, and legislation.
So it's nice to have someone around who seems to agree on a lot of different issues.

Quite a nice picture of yourself Dreia Since you posted your senior pic, I figured I'd do the same... its around 4 years old now, but I figure, why the hell not, eh???

Ditto. Although when you write it out like that, it kinda seems like a silly hodgepodge of contradictory ideas.
About the debate forum, personally I've always felt its biggest flaw was the moderation (no offense intended here, I'm just making an observation). Yes, people will always clash and there will always be some folks more interested in acting superior than engaging in a lively discussion, but...that's what the moderators are supposed to discourage. Yes, I can see wanting to avoid being draconian in rules enforcement, and I can see how swiftly crushing any posts that are inappropriate to debate can be discouraging to people who are less well-versed in debate but still wish to participate. Nevertheless far, faaaaaar too much flaming, trolling, topic hijacking, etc., is allowed to occur unabated. In fact, I've regularly seen at least one moderator (I won't name names, but it isn't sneaky) engage in such behavior.
Honestly, it's only recently that I've seen an impressive crackdown on bad behavior in the debate forums and it's been rather reaffirming.

The Golden Rule of forums: If you're going to be rude, be right. If you might be wrong, be polite.
Cute picture Omna. That smile suits you, as does your clothing. You also look quite like your avatar.
I, like you, am holding off on some college work. Mine is another 20 pages of Philosophy reading, which I really don't want to read right now. It's not that it isn't interesting, but it's a bit tedious. It took me around two hours just to read the first part of this chapter. The next section will probably take as long. Ugh.
There's another entry in my blog, this one revolving around the Divine Command Theory. Interesting stuff.
And I've noticed the issue with the moderation there too, I just didn't want to comment on it, thinking I might just be biased.
Nai, I definitely feel your dread of reading so much philosophy. It's a fine subject, but sometimes I can't bring myself to read that much. If it had flow and was more like literature, I'd be better. I have to read two units of philosophy a week, one by Tuesday, the other by Friday, and I absolutely hate it. The class is called Philosophy of American Life and Business. The "textbook" is titled When We Are Free. It basically consists of a bunch of editorials about how the government interferes more than it helps. I don't mind philosophy much, but I really dislike the book. However, it's a required course. I took it with the worst professor on campus for that course as well.
Omna.....that picture is very cute. You look really shy!
Also, thanks for the warm comments everyone. I'm always nervous about my looks and how others will perceive them. It's something Crimson has been working with me on adjusting. (It's one of those deep psychological issues with me, but there's no need to go into that right now.) I'm not sure I know too many people that absolutely love every picture or sight of themselves anyway.
That picture was taken four years ago, as I mentioned... THIS one however was taken end of fall quarter (October, November, thereabouts? so approximately 2-3 months ago...best pic i've got recently, that isn't santa-hatted :p)
@Kraj: It's always nice to see you in Debate. It's hard to find someone who I feel is often on "my side," because I don't really have much of a side. I hear that. I don't know that I share every view you have or prioritize every issue in the same way, but I feel you on the bit about feeling alone in your opinions. It's discouraging that the idea that someone has a mix of "liberal" and "conservative" views seems so dissonant to some people (possibly because it messes with the 'with us or against us' model, but I'm no psychologist.)
(Disclaimer: While I'm willing to discuss opinions and how they form, I'd rather not discuss any of my specific beliefs here; I'm glad to talk about any of them in another format, though.)
I don't mind sharing that I generally have 'liberal' views, but I am anti-abortion, and growing up on a military base has shaped some of my perceptions about the role of the military. I'm also not shy about the fact that I'm a practicing Christian, something that for who knows what reason is considered a conservative trait. (Most of the things that the Bible advocates are things that anyone could get behind; a few are more conservative ideals, and a few are more liberal ideals. I dislike that
my faith (or at least my religion) which I believe to be more or less apolitical has, at least in the United States, be 'hijacked' to a large degree by one of our political parties.)
(I'm dang tired; I hope the above doesn't sound too incoherant.)
Yay for posting pictures of ourselves!!! But I think I'll pass for now. I don't really feel comfortable revealing that on the internet, at least not now. I'm not ashamed of how I look or anything, I just don't want to right now. Plus, I don't know if I have any good pics of myself on this computer. But everyone else looks good. It's cool that everyone is comfortable doing that.
@Debate: I really like Debate, especially Philosophy, but the few times I have gotten into a debate, I get completely beat by people who are better speakers and can express themselves better. I feel like I have good thoughts and opinions, but I just am not experienced enough to be up to the same level as everyone else.
Well, good night everyone. I'm going to get up early tomorrow morning to finish studying for chemistry, so I'll see y'all tomorrow. Have a good night's sleep, Coffeehouse!!

I understand that. I am not photogenic at all, so I know how it is to hate your own image. Anyway, that really is a very nice picture. I guess it's more of a confidence issue than anything, showing it to people.

You'e probably spot on. Maybe a partisan sentiment is just easier; either way, I've never felt comfortable identifying myself with only one and not being somehow moderate (a theme with me, maybe?)

Yeah, I understand that. Ideally, a Christian-esque ethos should be socially pervasive and not "conservative" per se.

Hmm as for me, I'm going to be heading off again to do some more work..... Been bumming around here for long 'nuff
EDIT: Thanks Mamelon Lookin' at that old pic, before I had it highlighted, it does actually look pretty good.... the highlights are startin' to grow out tho... my hair's gettin' longer and longer heh
I can never resist putting up pics of myself Ahh.. you know what... One more. This is Arguas and I, last May.
@Pictures: Thanks for sharing, guys. I already have a pretty good picture of myself on my user-card. I do want to share a picture of maybe my family or my house sometime though... I just need to get one (a picture).
Seems nobody mentioned this at all, so I just thought I'd repost it in case it got lost in the flood of responses. Anime of the Week: Karin.
My brother hijacked the internet, or I'd have had your avatar up earlier, Alacar. It'll be attached to this post shortly. I've been asleep since 8pm.
@Danica: I think that's one of the first good pictures I've seen of you and (I'm assuming) Ryan together. Cute.
Here's a less purple avatar for you, Al. Although, I think maybe I got it too white... Let me know.
Edit: The second one is on the right. I think it looks better.
Dude, FLCL is one of the greatest animes of all time. I don't care if I missed the entire conversation on it, I could talk for ages about it. I remember the first time i saw it, it was in 6th grade.

I understand.
Yeah, I understand that. Ideally, a Christian-esque ethos should be socially pervasive and not "conservative" per se.
Awww. It can be that way sometimes. But when you and I debated in the last thread about homosexuality, you were very well spoken and clear.
I try to speak in as much of an accessible way as possible. I hope it works.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to be the peace that you feel.
All that I yearn for, for richer or poorer, is to fill your heart on my own.

I think it looks better.
ya know. ballin! :xd:
@ AotW: That sounds interesting. Ill have to recommend it to the Anime Club at my school.

Microeconomics, work(taxes), and selling lollipops tomorrow.
Anime-I don't watch much because I simply don't make the time. It's something I don't feel fair commenting on until I get to enjoy it!
I'm sort of enjoying this picture sharing thing. It's interesting to see how people change. I also like putting a face to the personality. Merely my opinion.
I also changed my avvy. That's my kitten, Squeeks, chasing the fish just after I bought and set up the new tank.
*big hugs*
